The Sight

The planet was now view-able from the ark.  It was so far away, yet in just three days they would finally arrive.  They say it is a perfect replacement of Earth.  Suitable soil, a breathable atmosphere, and a large water supply made it the best choice.  Finally after 5 long years of light-travel they would be able to be free of this ship.  At least, that is what Asher had come to believe.

Asher Day had been 15 when he and his family came on board the ark, mankind's chance for survival.  With the impending doom of the Sun's demise, the Earth was no longer a safe place to live.  All of the nation's of the world gathered together to help build a starship large enough to transport the Earth's inhabitants to the new planet.  It all seemed so long ago; even now he had faint memories of Earth.

Life on the ark wasn't all bad.  It had several bio-sections where one could enjoy the wildlife.  Every so often you could come across a window and look at the universe in all it's glory.  Even the city like sections were neat to explore.  With so much to do on board, something still made Asher depressed.

He was a security officer on the ark.  It was nice pay, but it was mainly just to do nothing.  Nothing was the only thing that happened during his shift.  Still, he was given a flashlight and a zap stick to help patrol the ship, not like he was every going to need them.   While he hated it, this was his job.  At least there was the planet.

Currently, Asher was doing his rounds in Sector 17 of the ship.  No one was up at this time, but yet they told him to check here for anything.  This sector wasn't the best either.  The floors were a bit filthy and the walls had a bit of rust on them.  Hard to believe anyone lived here.

The security officer now walked down the hall, checking to make sure each door was closed, for any cracks in the windows, and for any figures nearby.  Most of the doors were closed, a few were slightly cracked.  He proceeded to shut them and continued on his way.  As for the window, while it was a bit dirty, there were no cracks.  Looked like today was going to be another basic shift.

There was only one hour left of this bland and eventless job.  It was almost time to head back to the security office and call it a night.  This would be the case if he didn't spot it.  A small gleam in the window showing the outside now appeared.  It was odd, no satellites were reported to be in this area.  While it was strange, it also intrigued him.

This anomaly slowly moved across the endless void that was space.  One might have called it a comet, but it had a redish body with a green-like tail.  It was no comet, but all Asher could do was wonder and imagine what this thing was.  Why did it show itself to him?  Thoughts went through his mind as he continued on his way.

It made him think that this was a metaphor.  One describing his life, his dreams, and his mistakes.  This thing was weird, unknown, oddly colored, and a mystery, yet for some reason it surprised people.  Then, it seemed like nothing else was occurring, but that single  spot of the darkness.  Perhaps he too could be noticed like this spectacle.  Perhaps...
