Memories
Asher now finished changing into his casual clothes. His security uniform now laid on his bed. He now resided in his personal quarters. They weren't quite large, but it was just enough space for him to live in. It was here he considered a fairly decent home.
He now recorded his daily work log, which helped him understand what was seen that day. Most were just his personal thoughts said aloud, but a few had some actual work. This one from last week held the recording of when he found a small dog belonging to a boy in sector 5. That child was so happy to see his companion once more. That was just one of a few good days.
Other than those, he also sent a short summary of his activities to the Security HQ. This was just protocol, but most of those short reviews were never read up there. Despite that, he continued to pretend they cared and sent the response. Afterwards, he could do as he pleased, usually visiting friends or just resting, but today was different.
That thing that lit up the detail-less canvas that was the universe made his mind wander. He couldn't help, but to think. Of what was happening, and what had happened. Strangely, the thought of launch-day ran through his brain at the moment. How eventful it was.
People had been climbing aboard for days. People of all races, nations, professions, and carrying all types of cargo came into the ark. His family was just one of millions trying to get their spot of the ship. While he was still a young boy, barely old enough to drive, he could remember so much in detail. The bright blue sky, the white clouds, the soil beneath his shoes, all painted the moving image of launch-day. While people were now focused on the ark, he was looking at his old home one last time.
It wasn't long afterwards that it finally came time to cast off into the vast reaches of space. The entire vessel jerked as it slowly rose from the ground, starting the long 5 year voyage to the new star system. Asher had watched as they left the atmosphere; his home now slowly shrinking until it was nothing more than a dot. While he had forgot much about its surface, he still knew how it looked as they left it behind; it was hard to believe it burned only half a year after they departed.
Life was fairly normal from then on. Food was grown in special bio sections sections of the ship, water was molecularly produced from machines, and living space was built in surplus. It was a way life as good as any, but yet it was missing the old charms of earth. They had beautiful gardens in those bio sections, but it just missed the old world feeling.
He had finished his schooling on this ship, the second class to graduate. There were several new jobs on the ark, many just for the purpose of keeping it running. It seemed like a good profession at the time, yet now it seemed soul crushing. Maybe he should have took a more mechanical job.
He enjoyed his off hours. Every night he usually ate dinner with one of his friends. They would have so many stories of their experiences doing their new jobs, but when it came time for him to share, he had nothing. Most of the time, it was just him, loneing the empty halls for something to do. Even with the large amount of activities he could take part of, he found them a bit dreary.
As he thought of all these things, he started to think of his family. They visited every so often, only when they could. His dad, his mom, even his siblings came by to say hello. Seeing them brought a smile to Asher's face. Family was a thing that could cheer up any sorrower's soul.
On his desk was a picture from the last family get together. He stood besides his brother, Logan, and his sister, Amber. The family had decided on visiting a park and having a picnic. There was so much happiness while they chatted, sang, danced, played, and just been together as a family. Those where good times.
Nowadays, Amber worked as one of the ship's operators. She was always a clever girl. Logan, however, took a job as a diplomat. On the ark, many nations still existed, and they need people to represent them. He had made such a name for himself. A visit from either always had a few good stories.
Now that he thought of it, it was kind of nice having such high up siblings. They would occasionally send a little surprise for him, something like a pass for free food or maybe to go to some event. While this wasn't his thing, Asher enjoyed the thought of these gifts and took a few close pals to enjoy it with him.
Just as he was thinking of this, something dawned on him. He hadn't checked the mail in sometime. Maybe he had a letter or something from them. He now walked over to his door and check the mail box. Sure enough, there sat an unopened envelope. Asher quickly grabbed it and walked over to his kitchen to get a knife.
Carefully, he cut the package open, and retrieve a note from Logan. It read:
Dear Asher,
I've been terribly busy with work recently. I'm am afraid I may not be able to see you until we land on the new planet's surface. To make up for my absence, I'd like you to go to a little party a few of my colleagues are throwing in order to celebrate our arrival. I'd go, but I must prepare a speech for the masses for you know when.
With love
Logan Day
On the back of the note, there was a map and an address to this "so-called" party. Asher now walked over to his closet to find something suitable to wear. It wasn't his thing, but at least it was something...
