Eyes (Destiel/Sabriel)
Here's a fun little soulmate fic!
Everyone can see colours. That's just the way the world is. You can see almost every colour in existence. Almost.
Everyone is born without the ability to see one specific colour. That colour is generally the colour of their soulmates eyes. The first time they touch their soulmate, they finally gain the ability to see that colour.
Touch, not meet. Some people meet their soulmate and don't know for years that it's them, not until they touch them. Others are lucky enough to physically run into their soulmate.
Dean Winchester has never been able to see the blue of the sky.
His younger brother Sam can't see a very specific shade of gold.
Castiel Novak can't see the green grass or leaves.
Gabriel can't see...well we all know Sam has a complicated eye colour.
~~
"Dean," Sam had asked one day when they were younger. "What is dad drinking?"
"It's whiskey," Dean said, looking at the glass John had placed on the table, the sun shining through it. "Why?"
"It's grey."
Dean looked at his younger brother and then back at the glass. "No it's...gold."
Sam shook his head. "I can't see it."
"Huh," Dean said. "Your soulmate must have golden eyes then Sammy." Sam tilted his head curiously at that.
"What colour can't you see Dean?" Sam asked.
"I don't know," Dean said. "It's hard to tell when you've grown up without it." Sam just nodded absentmindedly.
It was only about a year later that Sam noticed something odd about Dean.
"Dean," Sam said. "You uh...you're wearing a raincoat."
"It's cloudy," Dean said. "It might rain."
"Dean the sky is clear."
"What no, it's grey."
"Dean, can you not see blue?"
Dean paused at that, looking up at the sky above him that had always been grey. "I...guess not. Are you telling me all these days it's been sunny I've been overdressing?"
Sam just laughed at his older brother.
~~
"Cassie what's got you moping around?" Gabe asked.
"The world looks miserable," Cas muttered, looking out the window.
"Well that's one way to think of it," Gabe said. He looked out at where Cas was looking. "Why is it miserable?"
"It's a sunny day," Cas said. "Yet there's still so much darkness." Gabe blinked.
"What do you mean?"
"The grass, the trees, everything just looks...depressing."
"Cas you realize everything is this brilliant shade of green right?"
"What?"
Gabe chuckled. "You can't see green can you?"
Cas looked between Gabe and the window. "I guess not."
Gabriel however was not so easy to discover the colour of his soulmates eyes. He could see every colour that he knew of, he could see green and blue and brown. Nothing ever really seemed unusual to him.
"Cas do you think I've got a soulmate?" Gabe asked Cas when he was sixteen.
"Of course you do," Cas said.
"People have been known to not have them," Gabe said. "And I can see all the normal eye colours."
"Can you see hazel?" Cas asked.
"I think so, yeah," Gabe said.
Cas shrugged. "Hazel is a strange colour. It might be a difference shade of hazel that's uncommon."
"I hope so," Gabe said quietly.

Sam and Dean had just been moved to a new school after their dad wanted to move again. They were used to it by now, and it seemed that they would be staying a while in this new place if they liked it.
"Dean you're wearing too many layers of clothes again," Sam noted as they walked into the school.
"Well maybe if someone could tell me when the sky is clear," Dean said, rolling his eyes. "You know, I feel sorry for the guy who has you as a soulmate."
"Why?"
"Your eye colour is ridiculous."
Sam just rolled his eyes and followed Dean to the office. There they had two people waiting to show them around the school.
"Sam and Dean, this is Gabriel and Charlie," the office lady said. "They'll show you around and to your first class."
"First and most important question," Charlie, the girl with red hair said. "What fandoms are you in?"
"Any and all," Dean said. "Doctor Who and Marvel."
"Oh we are going to get along great," Charlie said, throwing an arm around Dean's shoulders and leading him off. "Hey Gabe, don't scare the new kid!"
That left Sam and the other kid, Gabriel. He was short, with...grey hair? And grey eyes? Sam didn't know. Must've been gold.
Gabriel was just staring at Sam. With wide eyes.
"Um...hi," Sam said. "I'm Sam."
"Gabriel," he said, snapping out of his trance. "Or Gabe. Come on, let's go."
They ended up walking mindlessly around the school, more wandering than Gabe showing Sam around. This may have had to do with the fact that they started talking fandoms.
Meanwhile Dean and Charlie had just skipped out on class. Because why not.
The day continued on, at no point did Sam and Gabe actually touch each other, and then they got to lunch.
"Alright," Gabe said, since Sam had been hanging with him all day. "My friends are all kinda weird but if your brother stuck with Charlie then he should be there too." Gabe led Sam over to a table with a lot of people at it.
"Sammy!" Dean said. "I have found our people!" Sam smiled as he sat down at the table, looking around at the people.
"So," Charlie said. "Let's talk soulmates."
"What?" Dean said, completely unprepared for the topic.
"She always asks the new people that," a boy with black hair and blue eyes that Dean only saw as grey. "I'm Castiel Novak."
"Nice to meet you Cas," Dean said, looking at the grey eyes. "You uh...have blue eyes?"
Cas tilted his head. "Yes I do. Why?"
Dean smiled. "Can't see them."
"Oh wow, not being able to see blue," Gabe said. "That must be horrible. You're almost as bad as Cassie."
"Shut up Gabriel," Cas said, glaring at Gabe.
"You thought grass was grey for how long?"
"You can't see green?" Dean asked quickly.
"Apparently not," Cas asked. "You must have green eyes then." Gabe looked between the two, sharing a glance with Sam.
"I wonder if they're..." Gabe said quietly to Sam.
"We need to test it," Sam said, nodding.
"What about you Sam?" Charlie asked. "What colour can't you see?"
"Well..." Sam said. "It's kind of unusual."
"Can't be as weird as Gabriel's," Charlie said.
"Shut up," Gabe muttered.
"I mean, he's been able to see almost every colour," Charlie said.
"Wait you mean..." Sam said, looking at Gabe who avoided eye contact.
"Actually," Gabe muttered. "There is something I saw as grey today. I don't think it was supposed to be grey."
"Ooo what was it?" Charlie asked.
"Doesn't matter," Gabe said.
"Fine but we're coming back to this later," Charlie said, narrowing her eyes.
~~
Gabe and Cas invited their new friends over to their house after school, after Dean had ended up spending the rest of the day hanging out with Cas and Sam was still following Gabe around.
Sam and Gabe were sitting on the couch watching Doctor Who, and Sam kept glancing over at Gabe.
"Alright Samantha, what is it?" Gabe said, after it finally started getting on his nerves. "Why do you keep looking at me?"
"It's just..." Sam said. "Is your hair the same colour as your eyes?"
"Yeah, gold. Why?"
"Your hair looks grey."
Gabe fell silent, looking into Sam's seemingly grey eyes. Sam couldn't help it, he moved to face Gabriel on the couch and brought a hand up to run it through Gabe's grey hair.
"Sam what are yo—" Gabe stopped at the same moment that Sam froze. Because Gabe's hair wasn't grey anymore.
Right before Sam's eyes, Gabe's hair had changed from grey into a beautiful shade of gold, his eyes mirroring the colour change. It was a beautiful colour, and Sam just sat there shocked as he looked at it.
Gabe had also just seen Sam's eyes change colour. They changed to this mix of hazel, green and blue, a mix of colours that Gabe had never seen before.
"Sam," Gabe said slowly. "Why the hell. Are your eyes. Such a strange mix of colours." Sam blinked before he burst out laughing. "All this time I thought I had no soulmate because I could see everything. Except what the hell are your eyes doing?" Sam was still just laughing. "Seriously, what in the world, they're like three different colours at once!"
"Oh my god," Sam said through the laughter. "I'm so sorry." By now Gabe was starting to laugh too. They ended up both laughing hysterically at the situation, and Dean and Cas chose that moment to walk in.
"What the hell?" Dean said, seeing the two of them.
"Cassie," Gabe said breathlessly. "What's green and blue and hazel at the same time?"
"I don't know," Cas said. "Nothing I can think of."
"Exactly," Gabe said, still laughing. "Oh my god why."
"You just described Sam's eyes colour," Dean said. "You know Cas, I think we're intruding on a moment." Cas just agreed and the two of them left the room.
Eventually their laughter died down, and Sam and Gabe just stopped to look into each others eyes.
"You have beautiful eyes," Sam said, looking at Gabe's gold eyes. "Like...sunshine through a glass of whiskey. That type of gold."
"And you couldn't just have hazel," Gabe said.
"Shut up jerk."
"Hey I'm not complaining," Gabe said, smirking. "I like it."
There was another moment of silence before Sam spoke. "We're soulmates."
"Yes we are," Gabe said, moving closer to Sam. He smirked slightly. "I'm quite happy with this outcome. You?"
"Oh I dunno," Sam said teasingly.
"Shut up," Gabe said, shoving Sam lightly. Sam smirked.
"Make me," he replied and Gabe just raised an eyebrow. Before leaning forwards to kiss Sam.
~~
The next day at school, Sam and Gabe were inseparable. Dean and Cas...still hadn't touched each other. So they didn't know yet.
"It would make sense," Gabe said at lunch as him and Sam watched their brothers talk.
"What if we just pushed Dean into Cas?" Sam suggested.
"I agree," Charlie said, appearing between the two. "You guys are adorable by the way." Then she vanished.
Gabe shrugged and then walked over to Cas and Dean. "Guys I have a theory to test," he said, placing a hand on Cas's shoulder.
"This can't be good," Cas muttered.
"You're right, it's not," Gabe said, and then proceeded to push Cas onto Dean. Cas yelped as Dean caught him and both of them lost balance and fell backwards.
"Gabriel what the hell?" Dean said from the ground.
"Wait for it," Gabe said, Sam also watching them expectantly. Dean just glared at them before realizing something out of the corner of his eye. Just a glimpse of colour through the window, a strange new colour Dean hadn't seen before.
"Dean," Cas said, looking at Dean's green eyes. "You uh..."
"What?" Dean asked, looking away from the window to look at Cas. And then he froze. Because Cas had bluer than blue eyes that Dean couldn't look away from. "Holy shit Cas your eyes..."
Sam high fived Gabe in the background.
"Can we go outside?" Cas asked suddenly. "I uh...wanna see the grass." Dean smiled and stood up, taking Cas's hand to pull him up too. The two of them walked away from the celebrating group of friends and outside. And for the first time, Cas saw the green of the grass and Dean saw the blue of the sky.
"Woah I've been missing out," Dean said, before looking back at Cas's eyes. He was still holding Cas's hand too. Cas was smiling, looking down at the grass.
"This is amazing," Cas said quietly. Dean just smiled before taking Cas's other hand.
"I could probably look at your eyes for the rest of eternity," Dean said.
"That was cheesy."
"Shut up and let me have my moment. You're my soulmate dammit."
Cas just smiled shyly before looking up at Dean. Blue eyes met green, and they knew this was the start of something new and something amazing.
