City Trip (Sabriel)
Quick fun note: This is based off the school camp I just went on, hence it being in Aus. Yes these are all activities I did, and I tried to shorten a lot of it or this would've gone on for ages.
Sam Winchester was sitting in the corner of the common room of his year level. The Year 10's were about to go on camp, to the city not far from their school, Melbourne. It was Wednesday and they'd stay until Friday.
Sam was with his friends Charlie and Kevin who were having fandom debates as usual. They were waiting for everyone to get to school so they could take a bus.
The last person finally ran into the room, golden eyes not even a little worried at getting in trouble for being late. The teachers just brushed it off though, because really, what more could you expect from Gabriel Novak?
Gabriel and Sam weren't exactly friends. Gabriel had pranked Sam a few times, they occasionally talked in classes. Sam would probably like him quite a lot of he wasn't usually a jerk to him.
They finally got on the bus and went to their first activity, which was a trampoline centre called Bounce.
"How great, exercise," Charlie said, rolling her eyes.
"You say that now," Sam said. "It's only going to get worse."
"Yeah yeah whatever," Charlie said. "Now, let's avoid the show offs." She gestured over to where a group of people were on the trampolines, attempting to do flips. Gabriel included. Sam rolled his eyes.
"Idiots," he muttered.
They stayed there, then went the rest of the way to the city. Got their luggage out of the buses, took it into their hotel/cabin place. And were told they couldn't go to their cabins just yet.
Nothing really important happened for the next few hours. They did rotation activities which included seeing some things around Melbourne and riding a bike along the Murray River.
Then they went back to their cabins.
"God I hope we're in good cabins," Sam said as he sat in the common room of the building.
"Well unless someone has specifically changed them," Kevin said. "We at least should be in the same one."
"Hopefully," Sam said. The teachers were talking and then told everyone to go to the teachers to figure out their cabin. Sam walked over to one of them and found out his cabin was 324, and not the same as Kevin's.
"Weird," Kevin said as Sam told him this. "Someone must've asked to change it."
"Yeah but who?" Sam asked. "It's not like we have any other friends." Kevin just shrugged.
Sam dragged his suitcase up the stairs to where his room was, and quickly claimed the bed in the corner of the small room. It took a few more minutes before two more people came into the room, laughing childishly.
Gabriel and Balthazar. Of all the people to be stuck with. Balthazar was Gabriel's cousin. Sam just stared at them as Balthazar jumped onto a bed and Gabe shrugged before climbing on top of the bunk bed on the other side of the room.
"Oh hey Sammy," Gabe said, noticing Sam staring. "I see you found the room."
"What," Sam said blankly.
"Yeah," Gabe said, drawing out the word. "Uh, we had to mess around with the rooms a bit...for reasons...sorry?"
Sam just stared, narrowing his eyes slightly into a glare. Gabe gave him a sheepish smile before flopping down on the bed.
"Well this should be an interesting three days," Gabe said. Sam rolled his eyes before standing and walking to the door. "Where ya going Sammy?"
"To find Kevin," Sam said. "And it's Sam, not Sammy."
"Whatever you say Samsquatch," Gabe said with a smirk. Sam glared at him before walking out of the room.
He walked over to Kevin's cabin and knocked before walking in, sitting beside Kevin on his bed.
"I'm stuck with Gabriel," Sam said simply and Kevin gave him a look of sympathy.
For the next hour or so they hung out in Kevin's cabin with the other people there, until they were called for dinner. Sam still stayed with Kevin, but this time noticed Gabriel glancing at him from across the room. He was acting strange to say the least.
After dinner, there was two options for all the students. They could either go to a musical or an arcade. Sam being the nerd and all that wanted to go see the musical. Charlie and Kevin were going to. Only downside was it was at a really fancy place. Which meant they had to get dressed up.
The people going to the musical were let out of dinner early to get ready so they wouldn't be late. Sam went up to his cabin alone and got out the nice clothes he'd packed. Black skinny jeans, a grey button up shirt and a black tie.
As he was leaving the cabin, the rest of the students were coming back, Gabriel included. Sam tried not to notice the way Gabe partially froze when he saw Sam, his eyes glancing up and down.
"Gotta say Sam," Gabe said. "You look good." Sam just glared slightly again, and walked past Gabe. Gabe watched him go, his eyes still slightly wide.
So Sam, Kevin and Charlie went and saw the musical, and came back several hours later when everyone else had already returned from the arcade and were getting ready for bed. The three of them were laughing and messing around as they walked back, and Kevin ruffled Sam's hair as he walked into his own cabin.
Sam walked into his cabin still having the goofy smile and messed up hair, and was immediately met with Gabe staring at him. Sam ignored him, enjoying the good mood he was in. Balthazar was just lying on his bed watching things on his phone with headphones.
"How was it?" Gabe asked. He was sitting cross legged on his bunk bed.
"Awesome," Sam said, crouching beside his bag to get clothes he could sleep in out. He moved into the bathroom to get changed and sat down on the bed when he came back in sweatpants and a loose shirt. He checked his phone quickly before realizing Gabe was still looking at him. "What's up with you, why do you keep looking at me?"
"Can't a guy admire the view?" Gabe said with a smirk, but Sam noticed the lie. He sighed and Gabe's face fell. "Come on Sam, be a little fun. I'm only teasing."
"I know," Sam said. "You're teasing can make you seem like a jerk sometimes though." Gabe gave him a pained look.
"Idea," Balthazar said suddenly. "Shut up and turn the lights off, I wanna sleep." Sam stood to turn the lights off, but then walked over to Gabriel's bunk, and stood on the ladder so he was balanced between the bed and the wall. Gabe gave him a curious look.
"Not tired," Sam said with a shrug. Gabe chuckled lightly. "Are you going to close this damn curtain?"
Gabe looked at the curtain beside his bed that he had left open. "Nah."
"Oh come on. There are lights shining directly onto my bed."
"Your point?"
"See this is why you seem like a jerk."
"It's just friendly teasing Sam," Gabe said, looking slightly offended. Sam sighed and jumped down from the ladder, moving back to his own bed. Gabe watched him go with a pained expression. "Night Sam."
"Goodnight Gabriel," Sam said, lying down and trying to fall asleep. He was hyper aware of sounds in the small room, mainly every time Gabe moved. He didn't understand why he was noticing all these things, things he wouldn't normally notice with other people. It was only Gabriel.
~~
Sam woke up to the sound of Gabriel's alarm, which happened to be Heat of the Moment. He ignored it and rolled over to face the wall, pulling the sheets above his head.
He stayed like that until Gabe and Balthazar got up and were talking. Surprisingly they didn't disturb him like Sam thought they would.
"Sam," Gabe said eventually. "Breakfast is in ten minutes. Get your lazy ass up."
And there it was, the jerkiness. Sam threw the sheets off, glaring at the ceiling. Gabe chuckled at him.
They walked down to breakfast and Sam went to sit with Kevin again, Gabe watching him go with that weird expression he kept having.
"So how's having a cabin with Gabriel?" Kevin asked.
"Wait Gabriel?" Charlie said. "Really? God how are you alive?"
"He's actually not too bad," Sam said. "Maybe a bit too much teasing, but he's fine."
Charlie paused and looked at Sam. "You like him. I ship it."
"Wait what? No! All I did was say the guy wasn't that bad."
Charlie said no more.
Sam went back to his cabin after breakfast to get his bag and things for later. Todays activities consisted of what the school was calling the Amazing Race. Basically it was going around the city earning points and answering questions and things.
Gabe walked into the cabin and looked at Sam for a moment before walking over to get his own stuff.
"Hey Sam?" Gabe said slowly. "I uh...sorry if I seem like a jerk sometimes."
Sam looked over at Gabe, surprised for a second. "Uh...that's okay, I probably overreact sometimes."
Gabe nodded, avoiding looking over at Sam. Sam watched him curiously for a few seconds before grabbing his bag and leaving the room.
Everyone gathered in the common room, and they were told the teams for the Amazing Race challenge. Sam was with Gabriel, but after the cabins he wasn't really surprised by that.
He noticed when they went to sit in their groups that Gabe kind of stayed by his side instead of talking to the others. But he didn't notice it enough as usual, to figure anything out.
The teacher gave them all the questions and the map they needed. Basically there was five sections, each had a major puzzle that was necessary and smaller optional points they could pick up along the way.
Sam immediately looked at it and started planning the best way they could get the most points and not fall behind in time.
"I vote we put Sam in charge," Gabe said. The rest of the team agreed pretty quickly, since Sam was the genius in their year level, and Sam barely had a chance to protest.
And then the race began.
At the first section they split up and met back up at a cathedral. Sam smiled a little when he saw Gabe looking at the place with awe.
The second section they split up again and met up at Parliament. The necessary challenge for this section included memorising something from inside the building, and Gabe happily volunteered to do it.
Sam was surprised when Gabe came back in barely even a few minutes and recited the thing easily. He ignored that little proud feeling in his chest.
The third and fourth sections they all split up again. Sam had been going off on his own each time and these times were no different.
The fifth and last section, when they split up, Sam ended up going with Gabriel.
"Okay so the answer should be over here," Gabe said, walking confidently down the street, finding the answer to the question within moments. Sam gave him an impressed look, it would've taken him a few minutes to find that at least. Gabe saw him looking and smirked. "Not as dumb as I look, am I?"
"You don't look dumb," Sam said on instinct and regretted it almost immediately. But Gabe just chuckled.
They didn't talk much if it wasn't about the questions, but Sam couldn't help noticing the way Gabe would glance at him when he thought he wasn't looking.
Honestly, it had been something he'd noticed for a while, same with the small things he felt. But he always ignored it. Always.
"Hey Sammy," Gabe said with a smirk once they'd gotten their answers. "Race you to the State Library?" Without waiting for an answer he ran off.
"Gabe you jerk!" Sam yelled, sprinting after him, the nickname easily rolling off his tongue.
They were out of breath and laughing by the time they got to the library and found their team there.
After that they followed clues to find their finish line and set off on the journey over to there, which was the Myer Music Bowl. They were tired and exhausted and their feet hurt, it having being nine hours of walking by now.
"Well that was fun," Gabe said as him and Sam trailed towards the back of the group. Sam nodded in agreement. "Dibs first shower when we get back."
"What no," Sam whined. "Come on, I totally ran more than you."
"I'm shorter, therefore I have to take more steps, therefore I get first shower."
"I don't see logic there."
"Well it's there, you're just too dumb to see it."
"Oh like you can talk."
"I can talk, I'm talking right now."
Sam made an exasperated sound as Gabe smirked.
They made it back to the cabins later, and had to have dinner straight away. Sam and Gabe had continued with their light banter, so Sam moved to sit with Gabe this time so they could keep talking. Sam didn't notice Charlie and Kevin looking at him with knowing looks from across the room.
After dinner they went back to their cabin, Sam and Gabe still talking. Sam came to realize that Gabe wasn't really such a jerk, that was just his way of teasing, and Gabe was actually pretty nice. And short. He made a great armrest.
Sam had a shower after Gabe, and when he turned the water off he could hear voices trailing out from his cabin.
"—should say something."
"I can't just tell him." That was Gabriel's voice. The other must've been Balthazar's.
"Come on, are you ever going to have a better time? We set all this up too."
"Shut up okay? I'm trying."
Balthazar sighed. "You're okay right?"
Gabe muttered a response that Sam couldn't hear. Sam suddenly felt bad for eavesdropping, and quickly got dressed before walking back into the room. Gabe looked sad but his eyes lit up as Sam walked in.
"Hey Sammy wanna play Cards Against Humanity with us?" Gabe said, holding up the box.
"This can only end badly," Sam said, but sat down on his bed opposite them. Gabe smiled.
Let's just say there was a lot of bad and dirty jokes made with this highly inappropriate game. But the three of them found it funny none the less.
In fact it ended with Sam and Gabe going into uncontrollable laughter at Gabe's comment on one of the cards, enough that Sam fell off the bed which only made them start laughing more.
"You okay there Sam?" Gabe said, smirking down at Sam who was now just lying on the floor.
"Never better," Sam said, smiling widely. He sat up and moved back onto his bed, yet again ignoring that fluttery feeling he got when Gabe smirked at him.
Balthazar and Gabe started talking, and Sam yawned, getting tired. He grabbed his hoodie and put it on, hood included, before curling up on his pillow and closing his eyes.
Gabe and Balthazar eventually stopped talking, Balthazar standing up to leave the room. Gabe looked over at Sam.
"Okay, that's adorable," he said. Sam made a muffled noise in response. "Are you awake?"
"No," Sam said in response and Gabe chuckled.
"Want to sleep? It's almost lights out anyway."
"Yeah sure."
Gabe moved to turn the light off, and went back to his own bed.
It took Sam about five minutes to notice that Gabe wasn't sleeping. Or even trying to really. He seemed kind of edgy actually.
"Gabe, you okay?" Sam said, using the nickname easily again.
"Honestly? Not really."
Sam sat up, the light from the window allowing him to see the room pretty clearly. "Want to talk about it?"
Gabe made some sort of choked sound, before jumping off his bed and moving to sit cross legged facing Sam. Sam looked at him with a worried look.
"I...I don't do well on camps," Gabe said. "I can't stand being around people all day. At times I would normally be alone, I get kind of edgy and scared and kind of anxious."
"Oh..." Sam said. "Do you want to be alone now?"
"No," Gabe said immediately. "It doesn't help, I've tried. It's a weird situation really. It's uh..." He paused for a second. "Actually that's why you're here. Something that helps is getting someone I trust with me, someone I don't really feel anxious around. The comfort of having someone I can go to if need be helps."
"Wait why me?" Sam said. "We barely know each other."
Gabe shrugged lightly. "I like you Sammy, not gonna deny that. I like you a lot, have for a while. You really can't take a hint huh."
Sam blinked once, processing this information. Gabe winced slightly.
"I'll just go back to sleep now," Gabe said quietly. He started to move but Sam grabbed him and pulled him back.
"Wait Gabe..." Sam said before realizing he had no idea what to say. Because of course he liked Gabe back, he just usually ignored it and pretended he didn't and pretended he thought Gabe was a jerk. "I uh..."
Gabe waited, raising an eyebrow. Sam made this little annoyed at himself sound before pulling Gabe towards him and kissing him softly.
It was a quick kiss, only used to get Sam's point across. He pulled away to see that little curious happy look in Gabe's eyes again, a smile growing on his face.
"I tend to ignore feelings," Sam muttered quietly.
"Yeah I noticed," Gabe said, smiling widely.
"So...you changed the cabins specifically so I'd be with you?"
"Yeah, Balthy's idea actually...he didn't want me to have a freak out like last camp I was on."
Sam gave him a concerned look. "You're okay now though, right?"
"Never better Sammy," Gabe said, smiling at Sam.
After that they ended up talking until they fell asleep, lying side by side on Sam's bed. Balthazar returned to the cabin eventually and just smiled when he saw them.
They woke up the next morning pretty happy, and Charlie and Kevin were immediately suspicious but figured it out pretty quickly. Kevin was surprised, Charlie had been able to tell all along.
It was the last day of camp. Their first activity was ice skating, and yes the two of them stayed together and held hands as they tried to keep each other from falling on the ice.
The final activity was going to the movies, to see Civil War, and yes they sat with Sam's arm around Gabe's shoulders, Gabe leaning heavily against Sam.
They sat together on the bus ride home, and Gabe fell asleep leaning against Sam. Sam just smiled at him and put his arm around him, glad that the camp had turned out the way it did.
