51. Just A Worried Mother
Cas got so screwed over.
Dean and Sam were working a case nearby which seemed demon-y. There was a baby found at one of the crime scenes, and they decided to "take care" of her. As in, they were going to make sure there wasn't anything fishy going on.
They found the demons' hiding place, and decided to take action. And Cas was left with babysitting duty.
They left him there in the motel room they had rented to take care of the kid. Dean decided to leave a teddy cam in case something happened. They just hoped nothing did.
._.__.~Several Hours Later~.__._.
Dean and Sam got in the Impala, Dean checking his phone. He heard it ring a few times in there as he fought off those demons.
He had three voicemails from Cas.
"Sam, Cas called me three times, you think he's okay?"
Sam shrugged. "I don't know. Did he leave a voicemail?"
"Yeah, let me check them."
He listened to the first voicemail. "Um, hello Dean. This is Castiel. I've been hearing some strange noises outside, there could be something out there. I just wanted to inform you, it's nothing serious. I'll call again in case it gets worse. Um... bye." And he hung up.
He listened to the second one. "Dean, it's me again. Castiel. The noises are getting worse, and it's scaring the baby. I'm not sure what it is, I've never heard anything like it. Listen," He heard a whistling noise and tapping and scratching in the walls. "I'm getting concerned. Please, Dean, call me back."
The third voicemail. "Dean, I'm getting very worried. If you don't call me back soon, I'm taking the baby to the bunker. I can't handle this on my own, not while I have her. Please, Dean, call me back, or get here as soon as you can. Oh, and this is Castiel."
He shoved his phone in his pocket. "We gotta go. Now."
"What happened?" Sam asked.
"Something's going on at the motel." And with that, he sped down the road to the motel.
Once they arrived, they quickly ran into the motel room to find Cas sleeping in the rocking chair, the baby asleep in his arms.
"I don't get it, I thought you said Cas was in trouble?" Sam looked to his brother, speaking quietly so not to wake up Cas.
"Well, he was kinda freaking out on the phone."
"Let's listen to the voicemails again."
Dean dug his phone out of his pocket. "Son of a bitch." He muttered.
"What?"
"Another voicemail left about a half hour ago."
"Why didn't you pick up?"
"I didn't hear it ring. I put it on vibrate while we were hunting those demons, must've forgot to turn the ringer back on."
"Well, listen to it."
Dean put his phone on speaker so that Sam could hear it. "Hello, Dean. I'm sorry I caused such a panic, as I'm sure I have. The whistling noise was just the wind. The tapping and scratching was just a tree blowing against the wall from outside. Embarrassingly so. I am truly sorry for this, and I hope I haven't caused too much distress. And this is Castiel. Goodbye, Dean." And he hung up.
"We should check and see what happened." Dean suggested.
"What do you mean by that?" Sam narrowed his eyes at him.
"I left a teddy cam over here, hopefully Cas didn't find it." He looked over to the small shelf on the wall where he left the teddy cam. It was still there.
He took the camera out of the bear and uploaded the footage onto Sam's laptop. And they watched everything that took place while they were gone.
._.__.~Several Hours Earlier~.__._.
Cas sat at the couch awkwardly as he watched TV. At least he had some experience with this, since he once babysat for a woman he thought was asking him on a date.
The baby suddenly started crying from her crib. Normally, Cas would've panicked, but he had confidence in himself, unlike last time.
He lifted the baby from her crib. "Sh, sh, don't cry. Cas is here for you." He soothed. He sat down in the rocking chair and started rocking her.
She kept crying as Cas rocked her. "How about a lullaby? I've done this once before."
He didn't know many songs, but he soon thought of one Dean spoke of fondly.
"Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
Hey Jude, don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better
And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Hey Jude, don't let me down
You have found her, now go and get her
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
So let it out and let it in, hey Jude, begin
You're waiting for someone to perform with
And don't you know that it's just you, hey Jude, you'll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah yeah
Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you'll begin to make it
Better better better better better better."
He hummed the rest of the tune until the baby fell asleep.
He began to hear noises outside and became concerned. He gently put the baby back in the crib and got his cell phone. He called Dean, and when he didn't answer, he left a voicemail.
He continued to watch TV on the couch. He was about to fall asleep when he heard the baby crying again. It's like she knew.
He looked over to the crib and sighed. It was just so much effort. He got up and lifted the baby from her crib.
"What's the matter? What's wrong? I'm sorry, I can't read your mind. Not anymore. I've found that's the best way to know what one truly desires. Trust me, I've done that with Dean on several occasions."
He looked down at her, trying to decipher what it was she wanted. What could a baby want? "Perhaps you're hungry. I've found that hunger is quite distressing. I don't like it either."
He got the baby formula (I think it's called formula, but I know next to nothing about that stuff so :\) out of the fridge and fed her. She seemed to appreciate it.
"I don't see why you enjoy this so much. It's just breast milk, it's not all that great. You humans continue to allude me." He yawned, tired from all of this "babysitter" work.
She continued to drink the formula as though her life depended on it. "I feel like there is something I'm supposed to do after this. Is it important? If it is, you'd think I'd remember it."
The noises coming from outside were starting to get louder, which concerned him a bit. He would've went outside to investigate, but he'd be risking something happening to the baby, and he couldn't allow that to happen.
He continued to feed her while getting his phone out of his pocket. He called Dean again and was forced to leave another voicemail. He was very annoyed by technology at that point.
The baby finished the formula and Cas set the bottle on the counter. He then remembered what he was supposed to do. He sighed a bit as the thought crossed his mind.
He held the baby to his shoulder and started patting her back. He felt ridiculous. One of the feelings he could've lived without.
He was an angel of The Lord, more accurately ex angel. He spent his existence fighting heavenly wars, and even stopped the long foretold apocalypse.
And now he was burping a baby.
After a few moments, he heard a small burp and laid the baby back down in her crib. He was thankful that he didn't have to do that very long. It was rather awkward.
He sat down at the couch and fell asleep almost instantly, until he heard a loud bang! from outside ten minutes later. He jumped awake, and the baby started crying again.
He got her out of the crib and started rocking her again. "Shh, sh, sh, it's okay. It's just a loud noise. It can't hurt you. I won't let anything happen to you, okay? You'll be safe with me. I promise."
He called Dean a third time and left another voicemail. Perhaps something happened. He dismissed the thought as soon as it crossed his mind.
He kept rocking her, and spoke to her a bit. "Where are Sam and Dean? They should be back by now. Then again, you can't really predict the Winchesters. Those boys are just full of surprises."
He half smiled down at her. She looked up at him and smiled a toothless grin back. She reached up and grabbed his nose with her tiny baby hand, causing his smile to grow.
"Yes, that is my nose. I need that to breathe." His voice was a bit nasally because she kept holding his nose.
He looked toward the small window where the noise was coming from. It was dark out, so it was difficult to see. He began to wonder....
He went to the window, baby in his arms, and looked outside. The wind was blowing violently, causing the tree next to the window to move, the branches scraping against the building. That's what the noises were all along.
He sighed with relief, thankful that there wasn't anything to worry about.
He sat at the rocking chair and got his phone, calling Dean for the fourth and final time. He left a voicemail and hung up.
He would've put the baby back in the crib, but he just couldn't bring himself to let her out of his sight. He didn't care that all was well, he wouldn't take chances.
The baby let out a long yawn, causing Cas to do the same. He closed his eyes and soon drifted off to sleep.
._.__.~Now~.__._.
Dean and Sam finished watching the footage, after fast forwarding some of it to save time, and turned off the laptop. They looked over at Cas, who was snoring just a slight.
"I don't know about you, but I think Cas has developed a bit of a soft spot for our dear little 'Skylar'." Dean broke the silence.
"Dean, how can we be sure that's her real name? That demon could've meant a lot of things when it said Skylar."
"If my memory serves me correctly, that demon said, and I quote, 'You can't protect Skylar for long. We will find her.' Who else could it have been talking about?"
Sam knew he wouldn't win this argument. "Fine. Whatever. And what are we going to do with 'Skylar' here?"
"I dunno. I do know that we can't let any damn demon get her. Who knows what they'd use her for?"
"We can't keep her either."
"Keep her? What is she, a lost puppy?"
Sam bitchfaced him half to death. "You know we can't adopt her, right?"
"Sam, her parents are now demon chow. I don't have the heart to send her to foster care. Demons are after her, Sammy. We can't let 'em find her."
"But we can't take care of her. We aren't exactly parent material."
"I dunno, Cas seems to know what he's doing."
They looked back at Cas, who was still sound asleep. Dean half smiled at him, unable to ignore the fact that he was kind of adorable. Especially with Skylar.
"I dunno, I'm too tired to discuss this with you right now." Sam walked into the second room and flopped down on the bed, asleep in an instant.
Dean kept watching Cas with a smile on his face. He didn't wanna keep this baby because he hated the idea of foster care. He just wanted a baby with Cas.
Although they weren't even in a relationship yet, he felt more than just a profound bond. He felt a special connection with that little fallen angel. The way he tilted his head to the side when he got confused, the way his blue eyes sparkled in the light, everything about him made Dean feel special.
He loved that trench coated angel.
He carefully lifted the baby from Cas's arms and lowered her into the crib. Cas groaned and curled up in the small chair. Dean smiled at him, suppressing a laugh. He was so friggin cute.
He picked him up in his arms bridal style and laid him down on the couch. He unfolded the blanket on the back of the couch and wrapped him up in it. He gave him a kiss on the forehead and turned off the light, going to bed so that he could sleep for about four hours.
._.__.~The Next Morning~.__._.
Dean woke up and walked out of the room to find Cas sitting on the couch with Skylar, tears falling down his face.
"Cas, what's wrong? You okay?" He was by his side in an instant.
He looked him in the eye. "Dean, Sam said we can't keep Skylar. He said it was dangerous for her to be with us since we're hunters. I tried to tell him that I would look after her, but he wouldn't listen. I don't want her to go, Dean."
"Don't worry. I'll have a talk with him, alright?"
Dean found Sam by the Impala packing all of Skylar's stuff in the trunk. He walked up to him and punched him square in the face.
"Ow! What the hell, Dean?" Sam tried to stop his nose from bleeding.
"What's your problem, Sam? Cas cares about Skylar, and you just up and tell him she can't stay? What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Dean, you know she can't stay!"
"It's your word against mine, and I say you can kiss my lily white ass. The kid is staying, Sam. I don't have it in me to send her to a foster home."
"That's bullshit and you know it."
"Excuse me?"
"This isn't about Skylar. It's about Cas. You love him, and you can't stand to see him upset. I understand that."
"He's not just upset, you ass. He's in there crying his eyes out, because you're a heartless son of a bitch."
Sam furrowed his eyebrows. "He's crying over her? I didn't think he'd take it so hard."
"Well, he is. He doesn't wanna see her go, and I don't wanna see my angel cry."
"You really think we can take care of a kid when we can barely take care of ourselves?"
"We can manage. Anything for Cas. Anything to keep him from crying."
Sam sighed defeatedly. "Fine. We can try. But if this doesn't work out--"
"Yeah, yeah, foster system, I know. Deal."
They went back inside and told Cas that Skylar didn't have to go. Cas smiled and thanked them endlessly.
Dean told Sam he wanted a private word with Cas. Nine words, to be exact.
He sat down on the sofa next to his angel, looked him in the eyes and said, "Cas, I love you. Do you love me back?"
Cas responded to this by closing the gap between them.
The kiss seemed to last for an eternity, all of time had stopped. And as soon as their lips parted, the clock started to tick again.
"Yes. I love you, Dean." He smiled.
"Good. 'Cause now we've got a kid together. We're daddies now."
"We shouldn't go on like this, Dean. The life of a hunter, it's not suitable for a child. Certainly not Skylar."
"What're you saying, Cas?"
"Dean, will you live a normal, apple pie life with me?"
Dean smiled at his terminology. "I will. And what kind of parents would we be if we're not even properly joined?"
Cas tilted his head. "What are you saying, Dean?"
"Cas, will you marry me?"
Cas's eyes widened at his proposal. He smiled brightly. "I will."
(A/N: THE NUMBER OF WISHES DEBBIE RYAN GOT ON THAT DISNEY MOVIE THOUSAAAAAND REEEAAADS!! You people make me cry in a good way. :*) Okay, soooooo, I know I'd normally talk for hours on end about stuff that is completely irrelevant to life itself and doesn't make a lick of sense, but I'm not gonna do that this time because while I love wasting everybody's time, I have stuff to do, books to work on, lives to ruin. Haha jk, I have no books to work on that I know what to work on, amiright? I have no clue what I just wrote. Okay, bye.
Peace Off, My Mini Marshminions!)
