39. One Thousand Forgive-Me Kisses
Dean and Cas sat at the table in the library, Cas unable to make eye contact as Dean stared him down.
"Cas? You know we've gotta talk about this." Dean began gently.
"I know. I'm just ashamed of myself."
"I'm sure you are. But there's nothing to be ashamed of. He tricked you. That happens. Metatron's a tricky son of a bitch."
"There were so many angels, Dean. He tricked me into banishing thousands upon thousands of angels. And because of it, I'm human. Where... do I even start... to look for... forgiveness?"
Dean folded his hands on the table and looked at his embarrassed little angel. His angel. No one else's. If only he could speak his mind and claim him as his own. Although, he suddenly knew right where to begin.
"I'll take a thousand kisses." He blurted.
Cas looked him in the eye incredulously. He didn't fully understand, nor did he believe he heard him correctly. "Pardon?"
"You heard me," Dean replied quickly. "One thousand kisses. Then I'll forgive you."
"I've never heard of such an offer."
"Well now you have. What do you say? Deal?"
Cas reluctantly nodded his head and held out his hand for Dean to shake it. Dean simply smirked and said, "Now, you know that's not how it goes."
"This isn't a crossroads deal, Dean."
"I know that. I just wanna make sure you mean it," He placed the tip of his finger on his left cheek. "Come on, right here."
Cas sighed and hesitantly gave Dean a light peck on the cheek. Dean tried to hide his smile. "Now was that so hard?"
"One down, nine hundred and ninety nine to go."
"I think we'll have to make a schedule of some sort, because trust me, a thousand kisses is gonna take a while."
Dean decided to use a pocket calendar to keep track of all the kisses. If they went for six kisses a day, two in the morning, two in the afternoon, and two at dusk, they'd be done by April give or take. And until then, Dean was gonna have fun with this.
._.__.~Day One~.__._.
It was early in the morning when Dean received his first kiss on the cheek. Unless the deal making kiss was technically the first. Whatever.
"Good morning, Dean."
"Morning, Cas. Let me mark that in the calendar." He left a tally mark on the date of October 24th.
"How long will this continue?" Cas wondered.
"Just until April."
"I hate April."
Dean laughed. "Not that kind of April. I've rounded it up to about a hundred and seventy days until we've reached a thousand, as long as we keep up our schedule."
Cas sighed. "Okay. I'll see you later then." He bent down and gave Dean another peck on the cheek and left.
Dean smiled happily and closed his eyes. He loved Cas, and he knew this was a good way of getting Cas to love him back. He took the red pen and marked another tally in the calendar.
A few hours later, around noon, Dean, Sam, and Cas were in the library doing research for a hunt. Dean checked his watch and looked at Cas.
"Cas, it's time."
Sam gave Dean a weird look. "Time for what?" He asked, taking a sip of his beer.
Cas knew what he was referring to. He got up and gave Dean a kiss on the cheek, causing Sam to nearly choke on his drink.
"I'm going to find more books for research." Cas stated monotonously. He walked away, Sam quickly looking at him, then at Dean, then back at Cas a few times over.
"Uh, Dean, what the hell?" He stared him down as Dean added another tally mark to his calendar.
"Trust me, Sammy, it's hard to explain. Let's just say I kinda tricked him into believing that it'll take a thousand kisses for me to forgive him for the angels falling." He looked up at him and smiled sarcastically.
"Yeah, of course. Obviously you can't just tell him about your feelings for him, that'd be dumb."
"It's a lot more difficult then you'd think, Sam. I've always worried that he won't take it well."
"Dean, he's giving you kisses as repayment for something that wasn't his fault. He loves you, man."
"I just don't wanna risk it. I can't lose him. Losing him because he dies is one thing. Losing him because I ruined our friendship is another. You know how gullible he is, I know he isn't taking this whole 'thousand kisses' thing too seriously."
"Yeah. He probably thinks it's a reference he doesn't understand." Sam chuckled.
Cas returned with more books and gave Dean another kiss. One more tally mark.
Later that same day, the boys returned from the hunt they were researching. They got tossed around a bit, but it was no big deal.
Cas, however, thought differently.
"Dean! Sam! Are you okay?" He asked, attempting to hide the deep concern in his voice.
"We're fine, Cas. Those vamps just gave us hell, that's all."
"Are you sure? Because I feel very worried since I'm human and I can't help myself when I see you hurt."
"Just a few cuts and bruises, man. Really, we're fine. Just dead tired."
"Please don't say 'dead' tired." Cas muttered, a slight catch in his throat. He gave Dean a small kiss on the cheek, right on schedule, causing Dean to smile.
They all went to their own bedrooms, Dean limping just a slight. He tried to cover it up, he didn't want to worry Cas. Even though it was adorable when he got worked up like that.
He bandaged the cut on his leg, added an extra tally mark for Cas's kiss from earlier, and was about to fall asleep when he heard a knock on his door.
"It's open." He called. Cas walked in.
"Dean. It was only five. I owe you one more for today."
Dean smiled and sat up in his bed. "Alright, make it a good one."
Rather than giving him a kiss on the cheek, per the norm, Cas kissed him right on his soft lips.
This caught Dean off guard, but he wouldn't complain. That's the last thing he'd do.
Their lips separated, and Cas looked down at his feet in embarrassment. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. Just the cheek, I know."
"It's fine," Dean blurted out more hastily than intended. "No problem, man. They're your kisses. Use 'em however you want."
Cas bit his lip shyly. "Okay. Good night, Dean." And he walked out.
"Night, Cas." Dean called after him, unsure if he heard him.
He looked at his calendar and added another tally mark before going to sleep.
._.__.~Day Seven~.__._.
The pattern continued for a week as though it were normal. Every night before Dean went to bed, Cas came into his room for the final goodnight kiss. It was always on the mouth.
Neither of them liked this schedule. They just wanted to kiss each other a thousand times all at once. But they kept this to themselves.
Only Sam knew of Dean's feelings toward Cas. But Cas never shared his feelings with anyone. They both liked each other, but the other person didn't know. Although, the "on-the-lips" kisses were a big hint.
On the night of the seventh day, Dean waited in his room for Cas. He waited and waited and waited. But when Cas didn't show up for fifteen minutes, he knew something was up.
He went out of his room to find him. He eventually tracked him down in the library with Sam's laptop. He had fallen asleep at the table doing research.
Dean smiled at the adorable sight. He carefully slid the laptop out from under him and caught a glimpse of the screen. "How To Properly Kiss Someone".
Cas was researching how to kiss him.
"Aw, Cas. I didn't think you'd go to so much trouble for me."
Cas just snored softly in response, causing Dean to smile. He gave him a light peck on the lips, and reminded himself that once he got Cas to his room, their room in his eyes, he'd need to add a tally mark.
._.__.~Day Thirty~.__._.
A month had passed, and Cas had given Dean about a hundred and eighty kisses. Dean cherished each and every one of them, because he knew they'd reach that thousandth kiss eventually. And it would be over.
Dean just prayed that the kisses would never end. Just the deal. Not the kisses.
Dean woke up that morning with Cas asleep by his side. They'd been sharing a room since day three. He gave him a light kiss on the cheek. He'd call that one a freebie.
Cas stirred, his eyes fluttering open. He saw Dean and smiled sleepily. "Good morning, Dean."
Dean smiled back. "Morning, sunshine."
Cas gave him a light peck on the cheek, Dean adding a tally mark to the calendar.
"You know what today is?" Dean whispered.
"No. What is today?"
"Today is Thanksgiving. Are you familiar with Thanksgiving?"
"Yes, I believe so. Thanksgiving is a holiday tradition. If I recall correctly, on Thanksgiving, one is to thank god for putting us on this earth and eat a lot of food."
"I prefer the latter, but yeah, basically." He chuckled.
"And, is it correct to assume that there is a special dinner designed for this day?"
"Yep. Thanksgiving dinner."
"Shall we prepare it today?"
"Well, not right now, but yeah."
"Why not now?"
"Because, by the time we get done, it'll be more like Thanksgiving lunch."
Cas smiled and gave him another kiss on the cheek. He rested his head on Dean's chest as the hunter added one more tally mark.
All of this should've been a big indication of their mutual feelings for one another. But they both put it off as some illusion, that it wasn't what they both knew it was.
They didn't want to risk a broken heart.
Later that day, Sam returned from the store with dinner preparations. Stuffing, mashed potatoes, turkey of course.
Dean looked at his watch. He smiled at Cas who kissed his cheek. Dean added a tally mark.
They got everything cooked by 5:15, a bit earlier then they anticipated. They all ate, including Kevin. He decided not to question the kiss Cas gave Dean, he always saw it coming.
They returned to their room and talked for hours. All they wanted was each other's company.
Cas gave Dean a light peck on the cheek, who added a tally mark.
"I believe we've reached kiss number one hundred and eighty five."
"I believe we have." Dean smiled.
"Almost two hundred, then we'll have eight hundred left."
"That's right." Dean realized this and tried to hide the disappointment in his voice. Eight hundred may sound like a lot, but it wasn't. Not really.
Dean looked at his watch and sighed lightly. "It's 11:30. We should get some sleep. Night, Cas."
Cas gave him another kiss, right on the mouth. "Good night, Dean." He rolled over and went to sleep.
Dean added one last tally mark for the day and merely attempted to sleep. The realization that the deal was reaching its end really shook him.
Maybe Cas loved him, maybe he didn't. He didn't know if he was willing to take chances.
He knew it was obvious, but he also knew that Cas wasn't exactly up-to-date on human culture. He could be misinterpreting all of this like he does with everything.
He looked over at his sleeping angel and smiled. He'd tell him how he felt after this deal was over. For now, he'd just enjoy Cas's presence.
._.__.~Day Sixty~.__._.
Christmas. This was Cas's immediate thought as he awoke with a big smile on his face.
He turned over to look at Dean, who was still asleep, his back facing him. He shook his shoulder a little.
"Dean?" He whispered. Dean didn't even stir. He shook his shoulder a bit more. "Dean!" He was slightly louder.
Dean groaned and turned over, but he wasn't fully awake yet. Cas loved watching Dean sleep. He looked so at peace. But now was not the time for sight seeing.
He leaned in closer, his mouth right by his ear. "DEAN!" He shouted.
Dean jumped up and looked all around until he laid eyes on Cas. Cas smiled at him innocently.
"Good, you're awake!" He gave him a peck on the cheek and took it upon himself to add a tally mark.
"Cas, it's 6:30 in the morning. What the hell?" He asked groggily.
"It's Christmas morning, Dean! No time for sleeping in!"
"I didn't think you'd be so excited about Christmas."
"Well, it was the day I was born."
Dean gave him an intrigued look. "I thought it was Jesus's birthday."
Cas sighed. "Your bible gets more wrong than it does right. December 25th wasn't the day Jesus was born. It was the day God created the angels."
"Huh. You learn something new everyday."
"Come on, Dean. Teach me Christmas traditions!"
"You don't even know what you're supposed to do on your birthday?"
Cas looked down embarrassedly. "No." He mumbled.
"Well, then I guess I'll have no other choice then to teach you, huh?"
Cas looked back at him with bright eyes. "Really?"
"As long as you promise to never wake me up this early again."
"Of course! Now, what is the first thing we would do as a Christmas tradition?"
"Well... there are the presents."
Cas grinned from ear to ear. "I get presents?"
"Of course you do. Anything for you, Cas."
Cas attempted to curb his enthusiasm and kissed Dean's forehead. "Thank you, Dean!" And he added a tally mark.
They went downstairs to the library where the presents were. Cas bounded down the stairs excitedly.
Sitting on the table in the library were three poorly wrapped presents and a small plastic Christmas tree thing. Cas's smile got even bigger, if that was possible.
"Which one's mine?" He asked.
"The big one."
Cas quickly grabbed the present, tearing it open. Inside, there was a snow globe. There were white trees, one of which carried a cardinal. There was a dog sitting in the middle. It had a silver base which was engraved, "The Woods Would Be Silent If No Birds Sang -Van Dyke". Cas shook it a little, kicking up the fake snow flakes.
He looked back at Dean and smiled. "Thank you, Dean." A joyous tear ran down his face.
"Like I said, anything for you, Cas."
"I just wish I got you something."
"Don't worry about it. It's fine. You don't have any money anyway. All I want for Christmas is you."
Cas tilted his head a little. "That sounds like something one would say if they're in a relationship."
Dean blushed darkly. "Sorry, man, I didn't mean to--I, uh, never mind. Just don't worry about the presents. I don't really want anything." Except your love.
They went through the rest of the day carrying out holiday traditions, and of course, by the end of the day, they kissed underneath mistletoe. And Dean added a tally mark.
._.__.~Day Sixty-Five~.__._.
Five days later, it was New Year's Eve. They got through five of their kisses, and saved their last one for midnight.
They all watched the New Years countdown thing on ABC, and it was ten seconds till midnight. They all counted down, the champagne at the ready.
"Five! Four! Three! Two! One!" Pop! "HAPPY NEW YEAR!"
Dean and Cas kissed, more passionately than ever. Sam was pouring four glasses of champagne.
"So they've been kissing, but they're not actually a couple?" Kevin whispered to Sam.
"It's for this stupid deal. They're not really together."
Kevin scoffed. "Bullshit."
._.__.~Day 150~.__._.
They still hadn't told each other. Even after the Great Valentines Day Debacle. Something no one would ever speak of again. Especially Kevin. Poor guy.
It was less then a month until the last day of the deal, and Dean's only wish was that it would feel like a whole decade. He never wanted this to end.
He'd been fighting this feeling for five years now. He thought he was gonna burst like a bubble. And now that he and Cas made this little deal, he could finally dish out some of his love. He certainly did on Valentines Day.
He and Cas were watching a movie. Dean wasn't really sure what it was, but Cas insisted. Freezing? No, Frosty? He couldn't remember.
About half way in, after one of the characters sang this big musical number about letting something go, Dean looked down at his angel and realized he'd fallen asleep. He smiled, seeing this as his opportunity.
He leaned down and gently planted a kiss on his temple. Cas smiled briefly in his sleep. He twitched his nose as though he were a rabbit.
Dean chuckled. "Are all angels as adorable as you are when they sleep? I doubt it." He softly kissed the bridge of his nose. Cas let out loud, quick little snores, causing Dean to laugh a little.
He gave him one last kiss on the head before closing his eyes and falling asleep, with his sleepy little angel in his arms.
._.__.~Day 170~.__._.
The last day. Dean's worst nightmare. The day it would all come to an end. The deal, the kisses, all of it. It was officially over. And so was Dean's life.
He cherished those kisses more than ever. He stopped those moments with his mind and engraved them in his memory. They soon reached the fifth kiss.
One. More. Left.
Dean sat solemnly on his bed, the darkness setting the somber scene. He just had to tell him. But he was just so scared.
He knew that Cas felt the same way, but what if it was all just mixed signals? That's happened to him before. Well, not to him. He was always the one sending the mixed signals. Not receiving them.
He waited in his room for Cas's final goodnight kiss. He saw it as his final kiss. Their last kiss, forevermore. He just prayed that he was wrong.
Cas walked in, causing a wave of depression to wash over the disappointed hunter. He looked up at Cas with sad green eyes. He stood up to face him.
"Last kiss, huh?" He rasped, his voice cracked from fighting all those tears.
"I suppose so. Nine hundred and ninety nine down. One to go."
They got closer to one another. They leaned in slowly, until Dean stepped back. "Wait." He mumbled.
Cas furrowed his eyebrows at him. "What is it?"
"Can I make a little change to our deal?"
Cas paused, wondering what he was thinking. "I don't see why not."
"How about, instead of a thousand kisses over the course of a hundred and seventy days, we go for as many kisses as we can over the course of a hundred and seventy years?"
Cas took a deep breath. He smiled. "Anything for you, Dean."
Dean smiled. "Really?"
"Does this mean you love me?"
"More than anything. And you?"
"Love is too weak of a word to describe my feelings."
And they kissed passionately, which is all they ever did, right up until the day they died.
