13. Every Rose Has Its Thorn. But I'll Gladly Prick My Finger For You.
Cas laid in his bed with no intention to sleep. He kept listening to the consistent pinging of his cell phone. Dean, no doubt. But he was too upset to text him back, so he just kept listening.
Ping!
Ping!
Ping!
It drove Cas crazy. He eventually grabbed his phone and looked at the texts.
9:51
D: I'm sorry
9:52
D: you've gotta believe me I'm sorry
9:52
D: come on baby don't be like that
9:53
D: /she/ kissed /me/ I didn't want to!
9:53
D: you know I'd die for you baby I'd do anything to make this right
9:53
D: I'd catch a grenade for ya
9:54
D: I'd jump in front of a train for ya
9:54
D: that's all I remember from that song heh
9:54
D: something about taking a bullet straight through my brain
9:55
D: :''( this is me right now
9:55
D: I think so I'm not very good with emoticons
9:56
D: you know I'd die for you baby give me another chance
10:01
D: I just sent you an email which I put a lot of effort into
Cas looked at his laptop which sat on his little desk. He got onto it and checked his email.
One new email from Dean.
Reluctantly, he opened it. It was a video. Dean was sitting on his bed with his guitar.
"Castiel, I'm so sorry for what I did. I didn't mean for it to happen. She wouldn't listen to me no matter what I said." He sighed and started playing the guitar. Cas recognized the song immediately.
"We both lie silently still in the dead of the night
Although we both lie close together we feel miles apart inside
Was it something I said or something I did?
Did my words not come out right?
Though I tried not to hurt you
Though I tried
But I guess that's why they say
Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has its thorn
Yeah it does
I listen to our favorite song playing on the radio
Hear the DJ say love's a game of easy come and easy go
But I wonder does he know?
Has he ever felt like this?
And I know that you'd be here right now
If I could have let you know somehow
I guess
Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has its thorn
Though it's been a while now
I can still feel so much pain
Like a knife that cuts you the wound heals
But the scar, that scar remains
I know I could have saved a love that night if I'd known what to say
Instead of makin' love we both made our separate ways
And now I hear you found somebody new
And that I never meant that much to you
To hear that tears me up inside
And to see you cuts me like a knife
I guess
Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has its thorn."
"Every rose has it's thorn. But I would gladly prick my finger for you."
Cas was sobbing by the end. He wanted to believe that Dean really didn't try to kiss her, but his heart was too broken.
Ping!
Ping!
Ping!
The consistent pinging of new texts. With each ping, another little part of him died.
10:06
D: did you watch it?
10:06
D: I hope you did
10:07
D: because I meant every word I said
10:07
D: I love you so much
10:08
D: please just say something
10:09
D: let me spell it out for you
10:09
D: I
10:09
D: L
10:09
D: O
10:09
D: V
10:09
D: E
10:10
D: Y
10:10
D: O
10:10
D: U
10:11
D: I'm apologizing from the bottom of my heart here
10:12
D: I'll text you again in like half an hour or however long it takes to pick up the pieces of my broken heart
Cas just stared at the last text. How could he respond to that? He began working on his reply.
10:14
C: Dean, I want to believe you. I really do. But I walked in on you kissing her. You have no idea how much that hurt. I have always trusted you, and you betrayed that trust. I want to love you, and a part of me still does, but I don't want to get hurt again. You think /your/ heart is broken? You don't know the meaning of the phrase.
But he didn't send it. He just left it there, waiting to be sent. He just sobbed into his pillow for a while.
Ping!
He looked at his phone. It was Dean. But he wasn't sure he wanted to read it. What would it say? What could it say? He looked at it.
10:39
D: 53
Cas knew the meaning behind that number. It was the number of dates they went on. He remembered the first twelve were for twelve days straight.
Twelve dates of Christmas.
He just laid in his bed and cried his eyes out. He didn't realize he cried himself to sleep until he heard another ping that woke him.
11:09
D: remember the 12 dates of Christmas?
Cas couldn't help but smile. He would always remember. Dean always did sweet stuff like that.
11:09
D: I want to be sweet like that again
11:10
D: I want us to be the way we were
11:10
D: I want to know that my baby trusts me
11:11
D: I want my baby to love me
After a few hours of nonstop texts, Cas could tell Dean was getting tired judging by the texts. It's like his grammar just flew out the window.
2:18
D: I live you so munch baht
That was probably suppose to say "I love you so much baby".
2:18
D: In betting so tried Castile
"I'm getting so tired Castiel".
2:19
D: I boy ever sure I'm real awake
"I'm not even sure I'm really awake".
2:20
D: I'm bout t falll aslepp
"I'm about to fall asleep".
And Cas had to agree with him on that one. This was ridiculously exhausting.
2:21
D: world yip huts txt mm baxkl
This one took a minute to translate, but it was roughly: "would you just text me back". But Cas was too tired to text now. He still had that lengthy text ready to send, but it seemed like too much effort at this point.
2:22
D: I lkos tjouuuu
This one alluded him. What could that have possibly been? I... something. He was just too tired to think about this chicken scratch.
2:23
D: I lpxer tpiju
It made no sense, though he was clearly trying to stay awake long enough to spell it properly.
2:25
D: I luvvv tpuuu
Cas smiled when he realized what it was. "I love you". He kept himself awake for a while, expecting another disgrace to grammar nazis everywhere.
2:36
D: wake?
2:37
D: k
And that's the last text he got for an hour.
He busied himself in that timespan, knowing he'd get another text. He couldn't just text him back, he wasn't sure why.
Ping!
Cas lunged at his phone, scrambling to read the text.
3:28
D: just dreamed bout you baby
3:28
D: you forgived me
3:28
D: hope dreams reallly come to true
3:29
D: I dead tired now
3:29
D: you wake?
3:30
D: let me now when you falls asleep k
3:31
D: I can't lice without you babby
3:31
D: and I'm top tried to car bout me typed
"And I'm too tired to care about my typos".
3:32
D: fallen sleep gain
3:33
D: can't
3:34
D: wanna sty up wit you
3:35
D: imma calll yo no
Cas was well past asleep by now. He didn't hear the pinging anymore. But the ringing woke him up. He didn't move, he was too tired for that. And now his head hurt. He wanted to sleep now. He did but he didn't.
Dean left a voicemail, and Cas was trying to decide whether or not he wanted to listen to it. He lazily grabbed his phone and listened to it.
"Cas, I'm tired. Like... really tired. You probably are, too. I wanna... I wanna see you. I wanna...." And Cas could tell he fell asleep because he could hear his snoring until he woke up again and hung up.
It was 4:29 now. Cas refused to sleep. He wanted to text Dean so badly but he never did. He nodded off every now and then, but he immediately woke back up.
Ping!
But Cas wasn't as eager to read it this time. He was too tired to be eager. He looked at the text and realized that at some point during the night, he sent that text.
4:47
D: I'm not about to deny myself the simple pleasures of existence.
And Cas was out like a light.
He completely denied the fact that he woke himself up two and a half hours later with his own snoring.
It was the crack of dawn now. He got out of bed and looked out the window. Parked in front of his house by the curb was Dean's car.
He sleepily walked down the stairs and out the door. Dean was asleep in the driver's seat.
He opened the driver's side door and climbed onto Dean's lap. He rested his head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat until he fell asleep for another six hours.
