11. How Do We Get It Out?
Cas was acting really weird. Even for Cas. It had been going on for about a week, and Dean just got tired of it. He was eating all the food in the bunker, showing some major mood swings, and was getting on the boys' nerves.
Dean decided to confront him about it, he figured Cas would listen to him. They were in a relationship, or as Cas puts it, "a very profound bond".
Cas was in their room, watching a movie and eating popcorn. Dean couldn't help but notice he gained a few pounds. But he didn't say anything about it.
"Cas, what's up with you lately? You're constantly eating, you've got a serious attitude problem, and the only time you talk to me or Sam is when you're complaining about something! What the hell, Cas?" Cas looked at him.
"Dean, I'm pregnant."
And Dean blacked out.
He came to pretty quickly, the only thought in his mind being, Please let it be a dream, please let it be a dream.
"You... how... I... what?" Cas smiled.
"I know it seems odd, since I'm in a male vessel, but I am pregnant."
"Could you use a different word? Please? For the love of god?"
"Must you use that terminology?"
Dean groaned. "Just... don't say... 'pregnant'."
"Would you prefer 'with child'?" Dean nearly blacked out again.
"Cas? How are we supposed to... you know... get it out?"
"There's a fairly simple procedure."
"Uh huh. And how long until... the bun's ready to come out of the oven?"
Cas tilted his head in confusion. "I don't understand. What bun? Are you making one? I hope you are, I'm starving."
"Okay, first of all, you've got a bucket of popcorn right in front of you. Second, it's a figure of speech. How long until... you know, labor?" He felt weird saying that.
"Oh. It should be another month."
Dean nearly vomited. "A month? And you waited until now to tell me this?"
"Don't worry. A month gives us plenty of time to prepare."
"Right. Plenty. Totally. Cas, I don't even know how to take care of a goldfish."
Cas smiled. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll be a natural parent."
"I doubt it," Sudden realization hit. Dean was going to be a father. A real dad. It terrified him and excited him all at once. He thought maybe he should be happy. He smiled. "I'm gonna be a dad." Cas smiled too. He got up and hugged Dean tightly. Dean hugged him back.
"Yes you are."
~
Dean was in hell.
It had been a week since the big announcement, and this whole pregnancy thing was no picnic. He thought Cas was eating too much before. Now he's a vacuum. How much food can one angel eat? He wasn't even an angel anymore. He was human. This shouldn't have been physically possible. It's like he was bigger on the friggin inside.
But according to Cas, it was for the baby's health. There were certain things the fetus would need before birth. Certain vitamins and minerals and things like that.
Although Dean was pretty sure that was a croc.
He wasn't even sure how he kept it all down. Wasn't there that whole morning sickness thing? He'd probably prefer that.
"Dean!" Cas whined. "Where's the pie?"
"It's coming!" Dean called back. It was friggin exhausting. "Blueberry or apple?"
"Both!"
Dean sighed. At least he went ahead and baked both of them. Once the pies were done baking, he brought them to Cas, who was sitting on the couch. He sat down next to him.
"How long until this stage is over?" He asked breathlessly.
Cas was scarfing down the pies like a wild animal. "It shouldn't be too long now. This stage doesn't last too long. We're almost ready to move on to the next stage."
Dean looked like... well, how a normal person would look if they saw a ghost. "Next stage? What's the next stage?"
"Emotional instability."
"Emotional instability? What the hell does that mean?"
"The fetus will need to learn different emotions, so the child bearer will portray them and the child will... I suppose you could say absorb them."
"You're kidding right?"
"WHAT, ARE YOU CALLING ME A LIAR!?" Cas screamed.
"Oh, god. Can the baby go ahead and absorb happiness now?"
"Oh, god, I feel so bloated!" He sobbed.
"That's not happy." Dean was starting to feel really tired. He wasn't surprised, seeing how he spent the last week tending to all of Cas's needs. Cas rested his head on Dean's shoulder.
"Dean?" He was still crying a little.
"Yeah, Cas?"
"We haven't even thought of a name."
"How about Ben if it's a boy? And if it's a girl... Riley. I like the name Riley."
Cas smiled. "I like it. Riley. It's a girl, Dean. I know, it's a girl. Dean?" He looked up at him. He was asleep. Cas's smile grew brighter. He gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"Good night, Dean."
~
The baby was due in less than a week and Dean was terrified. The thought of being a father shouldn't scare him like it did, but he couldn't help it. Cas had gone over the process of labor, but Dean knew all the information would leave his head once this baby came.
"Dean, I think we're almost ready for the final stage." Cas said. They were in their room. Cas looked like a blimp. It scared Dean way too much.
"What's the final stage?" He asked, almost too scared to know the answer.
"My body will need to prepare itself for birth, so for the next week, I'll have to sleep." Dean was relieved. That didn't sound too bad.
"Are you sure you're ready for that stage yet?"
Cas grabbed Dean's hand and put it on the giant baby bump. He could feel the baby kicking in there. That was his baby. His little Riley. A tear ran down his cheek.
"I'm ready."
Dean looked at him. "I'm not. I've only been a dad once, and that was for about a week or so."
Cas smiled, even though he didn't understand the reference. "You'll be fine. You're gonna be the best daddy ever."
Dean smiled. He gave him a kiss. "And you're gonna be the world's best mommy." They both laughed.
"You should get some rest, Dean. Get yourself ready."
"No way. I don't think I'll be able to sleep until this baby comes."
Cas sighed. "This baby is due any day now. I want you to be prepared."
"I am prepared."
"Don't just say that to make me feel better. Are you sure you're up for this?"
"Of course I am." He basically lied. He wasn't sure how ready he was at all. It wasn't the fact that he was about to be a dad that scared him anymore.
It was the fact that he was a hunter.
He didn't want little Riley to spend her kindergarten years learning to use a shotgun. He didn't want her to live like he did as a kid. It didn't seem right.
He laid with Cas on the bed until the little angel fell asleep. He smiled down at his beautiful angel.
"I'm so glad I'm having this baby with you, my little baby in a trench coat."
~
Four days after the final stage started and Dean couldn't be more anxious. Sam couldn't help but notice.
"So, how's Cas?" He asked, Dean pacing a little in the library.
"He's fine. Still in that sleep stage thing."
Sam nodded. "Good. So, how are you?"
Dean finally stopped pacing and looked at his brother. "I'm fine. Just fine. Couldn't be better."
"I hope that's not true." Sam muttered.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Dean, you're not fine. You haven't been eating or sleeping. Does being a dad scare you that much?"
"It's not that. I've accepted that."
"Then what is it?"
Dean paused. "I don't want her to grow up the way we did. I want her to live a normal life. Is that so much to ask? I want her to live in a real home, not a string of crappy motel rooms with the weird smell and the mysterious stains in the carpet. That's just not fair. No child should have to live like that."
He looked like he was about to cry. He took a few deep breaths to calm himself, but it didn't seem to work.
"I know. I know it's not fair. I don't want her to live like that either. But no matter what happens, you will always be her father. And that's the best you can ask for. 'Cause, Dean, you'd make a pretty damn good dad." He smiled.
Dean looked at him with sad eyes. There were noticeable bags underneath them, because of the sleep deprivation. He wrapped his arms around his little brother, Sam copying the gesture.
"I'm scared, Sammy."
"I know. And you have every right to be. But think of it this way. Fear is like a superpower. All the adrenaline pumping through your body, it makes you think smarter, run faster. It's not a weakness. Fear is a superpower, Dean."
~
A day or two afterwards, Dean went to check on Cas. He was still asleep on the bed. The baby could come at any moment now, so he and Sam were always prepared for any surprises. This baby was not gonna sneak up on them.
Dean refused to sleep, although every fiber of his being told him to. He was exhausted, but it didn't bother him much. He got tired every now and then, so he made coffee to keep himself awake. He knew it wasn't healthy, but he refused to let something happen without him knowing about it.
He sat down on a small chair next to the bed, monitoring him closely. He had to concentrate, otherwise he'd probably fall asleep. He couldn't let that happen.
As he sat in that chair, his eyelids began to grow heavy. But he couldn't succumb to his drowsiness. He'd watched enough movies to know that once the father fell asleep, the baby would be ready to come out. He always thought the babies in those movies and TV shows kinda planned it all out.
It was mind over matter, and he soon lost. He couldn't fight it anymore, he was too tired. And about a half an hour after he fell asleep, Cas woke up.
"Dean? I think it's time," He looked at Dean, who was still asleep. "Dean! Oh, I knew you'd try and go without sleep. Sam!" He yelled. Sam came in an instant.
"Yeah, Cas?" Cas groaned, feeling Riley kick.
"I believe the bun is ready to come out of the oven!"
~
Dean woke up, still in the same chair. When he realized he fell asleep, he sprang to his feet.
"Cas, are you okay...?" He trailed off when he saw the baby in Cas's arms.
She was beautiful. Riley Jessica Winchester. Of course, Sam came up with her middle name.
Dean wasn't sure what to do. He felt his knees start to weaken. He let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. Sam and Cas smiled.
"Dean, meet your daughter, Riley." Cas said softly. Dean was still frozen in place.
"My daughter." He mumbled with a small smile.
"You alright, Dean?" Sam asked.
"I've never been better. I'm a... I'm a dad." He chuckled. Cas's smile widened.
"Do you want to hold her?" He asked. Dean nodded, rendered speechless. As he held his baby girl for the first time, he felt like he was on top of the world. His mind was clearer then it had been in years.
It was her eyes that mesmerized him the most. He was expecting green eyes like his, or blue like Cas's. Her eyes were special. One was blue, the other was green. There were light flecks of grey in them, making them look even more beautiful.
"Hey, Riley. I'm Dean. I'm your daddy," He smiled brightly. A joyful tear ran down his face. "Or one of your daddies at least. Me, your other daddy Cas, and your Uncle Sammy are gonna take care of you. You sweet little angel."
~
And they did take care of her. The little Winchester family. Two brothers, a fallen angel, and a baby. At six months old, they discovered she was starting to grow wings. They grew pretty quickly. In a month they were almost a foot long.
By the time she was a year old, she was running around the house flapping her little wings like she was trying to fly. Well, if little is three and a half feet long.
Dean and Cas decided to homeschool her, since that seemed like the logical option. A big pair of angel wings wasn't an ideal choice for show-and-tell at a public school.
Her wings were stunning. They were dark purple with flecks of black. She could've been the mascot for the Baltimore Ravens.
Despite Dean's doubt, he was in fact a natural parent. He was a big influence on her. Her first words were "ramble on". And instead of a lullaby, he would sing "Hey, Jude", because that's what his mother sang to him as a baby. It was one of Riley's favorite songs.
And Cas turned out to be a pretty good "papa". He would tell her stories of his adventures with the Winchesters, and make them sound like fairy tales. Her favorite was the one where an angel rescues a man from perdition and they fall in love.
She didn't know much about her family. She knew her papa was an angel and her dad was a human, but that was about it. She didn't know her family used to be monster hunters.
Riley was in love with photography. The things she could do with a camera. One year on Christmas Day, when she was 16, she put her talent to good use.
She woke her dads up at dawn, much to Dean's dismay. She dragged them to the library where her laptop was sitting on the table. Sam was already in there.
"What could be so important that you had to wake me up at this hour?" Dean grumbled.
Riley smiled her beautiful smile. There was a video waiting to be played on the laptop screen. She pressed the play button, and in big black words on a purple background, it said, "A Family Of Angels: The Winchesters".
A song began to play. Travelin' Riverside Blues. It made Dean smile.
There was a picture of them all in the bunker together.
A picture of Dean and Cas kissing. There was a caption which read: "Best Daddies Ever".
A selfie of Riley and Dean which was captioned: "My Daddy Named Dean".
A selfie of Riley and Cas with the caption: "My Papa Named Cas".
A selfie of Riley and Sam captioned: "And My Big Uncle Moose".
A picture of the bunker from the outside: "Home Sweet Home".
A picture of the Impala: "Chevy Sweet Chevy".
A picture of Sam and Gabriel kissing, who had recently returned: "The Moose And His Angel". She was disappointed that he couldn't be there.
A picture of Charlie: "A Friend From Out Of Town". She managed to come back from Oz so she could visit them.
A picture of Jody Mills: "The Sheriff In Town".
A new song started playing. Surfin' USA.
A picture taken at the beach. Dean and Cas were in side by side lounge chairs, holding hands: "Family Vacation".
A giant sand castle Riley and Sam built, Riley was eight at the time. She and Sam were standing next to it: "A Creation Fit For A King".
Cas, who was buried in the sand so only his face was visible, a big smile on his face: "Stuck In The Sandbox".
The drive back home. Dean in the front seat, Riley and Cas in the back, Sam was driving. Dean, Cas, and Riley were asleep and Sam took a picture of it, a goofy smile on his face: "A Long Day For Everyone".
Another song. Holiday by Vampire Weekend.
A few years later, Riley was ten. It was almost Christmas, and there was snow outside. Riley and Cas made a snowman: "Do You Wanna Build A Snowman?"
A ten second video of Riley, Dean, and Cas having a snowball fight, the song still playing: "Or Would You Rather Throw Snowballs At Each Other?"
Riley, Cas, and Dean were in the bunker library, sitting at the table drinking hot chocolate. There were hot chocolate mustaches on their faces: "Got Cocoa?"
Dean and Cas were kissing, Cas holding mistletoe over them: "Jingle All The Way!"
This Is Halloween from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
It was the same year, Riley was dressed as a Raven. From the football team, with a jersey and everything: "Team Spirit!"
Dean and Cas were dressed as each other: "Freaky Friday".
Sam just had a moose antler headband on, using his signature bitch face: "Putting The "Bull" In Rocky And Bullwinkle".
Riley's mountain of candy on the table in the bunker library: "Mount Eversweet".
Gabriel attempting to steal some of the candy from her stash: "Trickster No Swiping!"
The song fades away, and the sound effect of applause takes it's place.
A recent picture of 16 year old Riley, Cas, Dean, Sam, and Gabriel sitting in the library: "That's All Folks!"
Once the video montage ended, Sam, Dean, and Cas applauded. Dean and Cas were crying a little, but they were happy tears.
"Merry Christmas, guys!" Riley exclaimed.
"That was great, Riley!" Dean smiled.
"Yeah, you did a great job with it, sweetie!" Cas was still crying a bit.
"Come on, group hug!" Sam yelled. They all got in on the group hug, knowing without a doubt, that was the best Christmas ever.
