Break up
Set in AU
Coincidence. It was a huge coincidence. Cas had literally calculated the odds of it once before, but Dean couldn't remember the exact numbers.
What were the odds that two brothers would end up dating another set of brothers?
Dean Winchester and Cas Novak had been dating for....
Well, now that Dean thought about it, he didn't really know when he and Cas had started dating. They had just gone from being friends to being boyfriends. It had happened so gradually that Dean didn't really think there was a specific time they had started dating.
Unlike Dean and Cas, Sam and Gabriel had a date.
Sam Winchester and Gabriel Novak had been dating for exactly two years, six months, and seventeen days.
Or, at least, that's how long they had been dating when the four boys decided to go to Charlie Bradbury's party, and everything came crashing down.
The party had started out fine, and everything was fun, until Sam lost track of Gabriel.
"Have you seen Gabe anywhere?" He asked Dean and Cas, slightly concerned. It wasn't like Gabriel to run off.
"No," Dean admitted and Cas shook his head.
"We'll help you look," Cas offered. They split up and searched through the party. Sam was starting to get worried, but then he spotted Gabe.
He found his boyfriend lip locked with some pretty girl Sam didn't know.
Sam didn't know what to do. He wasn't sure whether to scream or burst into tears. He thought Gabriel had cared about him. But if he really cared, then why was he kissing some girl?
Finally, Gabe had the audacity to look up, and he froze at the sight of Sam's shocked face. Sam turned and headed for the door. Gabe shoved the girl away and rushed after him.
"Sam-" He started.
"No." Sam retorted, shaking his head.
"Sammich, please-"
"I don't want to hear it, Gabe."
"Sammy,"
"Go away."
"Sam-"
"I said go away!" Sam snapped, whirling around to face him. They were standing on Charlie's front lawn now, and tears were brewing in Sam's eyes.
"I can explain," Gabriel declared.
"I don't care. I know what I saw."
"Sam, please."
"What's there to say, Gabe? Were you or were you not kissing that girl?" Sam demanded.
"....I was." Gabriel admitted.
"Then I don't need to hear anything else you have to say. I thought you cared about me!"
"I do!"
"The WHY would you kiss somebody else!?" Gabriel didn't have a response to let. He stared at Sam, looking miserable.
"Sam-"
"We're done." Sam snapped.
"But-"
"Done!" Sam was like that. If you weren't going to treat him right, then he didn't see why he should waste his time on you. He left Gabe standing shocked and heartbroken on the lawn, and ventured back into the house to find Dean.
"Hey," His brother grinned, at him, not knowing what had just gone down. "Did you find-" He stopped, taking in the wavering expression on his brother's face. "What's wrong?" Sam shook his head, tears filling his eyes. "Sammy, what's wrong?"
"I wanna go home." Sam offered.
"Okay," Dean looked worriedly at his brother, then scanned the crowd of people for Cas, but his boyfriend was nowhere in sight. He sighed. He'd text Cas later and explain. "Let's go home."
It wasn't until they were halfway home, alone in the Impala that Sam explained.
"I broke up with Gabriel," He sniffled, tears still fresh on his face.
"What?" Dean's eyes widened. "Why?"
"I caught him kissing some girl." Dean paused.
This was bad. Very bad.
Sam and Gabriel couldn't break up. That would put them on opposite sides, and make Cas and Dean choose between their little brothers or each other. Dean didn't want to have to choose between Sam and Cas. They both meant too much to him.
But at the same time, Gabriel was at fault. Cas had to see that. He kissed another girl. Dean kinda wanted to punch him.
No, he corrected himself as he glanced at his brother, who was quietly crying his eyes out. He wanted Gabriel to suffer. A LOT.
Nobody hurt Sammy and got away with it. Not even the brother of Dean's own boyfriend.
Sam went right to bed after they got home, and Dean called Cas.
"Dude, what the HELL happened?" Cas demanded. "Gabriel is a wreck, and he won't tell me why."
"He and Sam broke up." Dean offered. There was a pause.
"...I'm sorry, WHAT?"
"Sam broke up with Gabriel."
"But- but SABRIEL."
"I know."
"WHY?"
"Apparently, he caught your brother kissing some girl at the party."
"Gabe wouldn't do that. Especially not to Sam. He loves Sam."
"Well, apparently he did. And Sam broke up with him."
"Did he at least give him a chance to explain? Maybe there was a good reason!"
"What good reason could he have for kissing someone else?"
"I don't know, but Sam should've at least heard him out!"
"Hell no, Gabe got what he deserved!"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh dear god, no." Dean stopped himself. "It's already starting."
"What is?" Cas demanded.
"I was afraid that since Sam and Gabe broke up, it would hurt us too."
"Why would their breakup hurt us?"
"Because think about it, Cas. We're their brothers. I have to stick by Sam on this, just as you have to stick by Gabriel not matter who was right or wrong. It's our job as siblings. And I don't want to think Sam was right to break up with Gabe, and then fight with you because you think Sam was in the wrong!"
"...So then let's not fight about it." Cas suggested. "What if we try to fix things?"
"Fix things how? Sam's been crying his eyes out since the second we left the party."
"I found Gabriel curled up in a ball on Charlie's lawn, looking like someone just told him Skittles were banned in the country. He's in his room, bawling. Clearly, they're both unhappy, so maybe we can find an explanation and can get them back together."
"And we can figure out both sides of the story and see who was right."
"It's not always about being right, Dean."
"I know, because if it was, you'd always be right."
"I know."
".....You're supposed to say that you're not always right."
"When have I been wrong though?"
"That's not the point-"
"Hey, sometimes you're right too! But that's when we agree!"
"WOW. Okay, I'm gonna go check on Sam before you dig yourself any deeper in that hole."
"Probably a good idea. I'll go try to calm Gabe down."
******
Three days later, nothing had gotten better. Dean found his little brother lying on his bed, still dressed in the pajamas he had thrown on after the party, and staring at his phone.
"....What's up?" Dean asked gently.
"He hasn't called." Sam offered. "Not even a text." Dean didn't need to be told who he was.
"Well, you did break things off with him." Dean insisted. "Maybe he thinks you don't want to talk to him."
"That wouldn't matter." Sam declared. He smiled sadly. "I remember, the night before Midterms, I told him not to call me, and he did anyways, three times, to tell me that I was gonna do great on exams and ace them all."
"That's Gabe alright." Sam buried his face in his pillow.
"I just want him to call. I just want to talk to him."
"Then why don't you call him?" Dean suggested. Sam's head snapped towards his brother.
"Hell. NO." Sam proclaimed. "He's the one who messed up. I'm not going to call him and look desperate and pathetic when he's the one that should be apologizing!"
"Fair enough," Dean agreed. "....Wanna wallow, then?"
"What's wallow?"
"It's when you sit on the couch wrapped in fuzzy blankets, and eat a gallon on cookie dough ice cream while watching chick flicks."
"You hate chick flicks."
"Yeah, well you can't exactly watch action movies while you're wallowing over a break up, now can you?" Dean rolled his eyes. "I'm gonna go buy ice cream. Get a fuzzy blanket and pick out some movies. I'll meet you on the couch." Sam smiled.
"Thanks Dean."
"Anytime, buddy."
******
"Cassie?" Gabriel asked, staring at his phone. "How long after a breakup can you call without looking desperate?"
"....What?" Cas questioned. He'd never even been in a break up before. He'd just gone from single pringle to dating Dean.
"It's been three days, ten hours, twenty seven minutes and-" Gabriel glanced up at the clock. "Thirty seconds since Sam broke up with me, and I really want to call him."
"So then call him."
"But I don't want to look desperate!"
"You won't look desperate, you big baby. Call him!" Gabriel grabbed the phone and then hesitated.
"Why hasn't he called me?" He questioned.
"Why would he call you?" Cas retorted. "You're the one who kissed another girl."
"But wouldn't he want to hear my side of it after he's calmed down?" Cas shrugged.
"Potentially. I don't know. It depends on how Sam handles break ups, which is something I know nothing about."
"So he doesn't even care enough about my side of things to call." Gabriel concluded. Cas's eyes widened.
"Wait, no." He insisted. He wanted Sabriel to fix things, not break up even further! "He's probably just stubborn like Dean is, and won't call you because he's waiting for you to apologize."
"Well if I apologize, then Sam should too!" Cas blinked.
"What does Sam have to apologize for?"
"He refused to listen to me!"
"After you kissed another girl."
"Yeah!"
".....How you got a boyfriend in the first place," Cas began. He sighed. "Wow. Just call him, okay?"
"Okay." Gabriel clicked on the phone and then paused. ".....What do I even say to him?"
"You apologize!"
"What if that doesn't work?"
"Oh my Dad."
*****
It took Gabriel five hours to work up the courage to call Sam. And by that time, the younger Winchester boy was feeling much better. Chick Flicks and ice cream worked wonders, and suddenly he felt a little less destroyed by the breakup.
Until his phone rang, that is. Sam glanced at the caller ID and flipped out.
"Oh my god, it's him." He declared, throwing the phone like it was a live hand grenade. It smacked Dean in the chest, and he fumbled for the device.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Dean demanded. "Answer it!"
"I can't answer it!" Sam proclaimed.
"Why not?"
"Because it'll sound desperate!"
"No it won't!" Dean insisted. The phone kept ringing. "Answer it!"
"You answer it!"
"No!"
"Well don't let it go to voicemail- then he'll think I hate him!"
"I thought you did hate him!"
"What? No I don't!" Sam exclaimed.
"Then answer the phone!"
"NO!"
"WHY?!"
"BECAUSE I'M STILL PISSED AT HIM, DAMMIT."
"You know what-" Dean answered the call and threw the phone at Sam.
"DEAN!" Sam yelped, panicked.
***
"Oh my dad, he picked up." Gabriel insisted. "Fuck- what do I say again?" Cas facepalmed.
"Just shut up and talk to him!" Cas insisted.
"No!"
"GABE."
****
"You take it!" Sam tossed the phone back to Dean like it was a hot potato.
"No, you take it!" Dean tossed it back.
"No, you!"
"Why should I take it- it's your freaking boyfriend!"
"Ex-boyfriend!"
"Ex-schmex- take it!"
"No!"
"Samuel, he can hear this, now take the damn phone and talk to him!"
"No!!"
****
"Just say you're sorry!" Cas hissed.
"What if he thinks I'm being sarcastic? You know I sound sarcastic when I panic!" Gabriel hissed back.
"Gabe he's probably listening to this right now- just TALK TO HIM!
"No!"
"Oh for crying out loud, why did you call him?"
"You TOLD ME TO CALL HIM!"
"Because it sounded like a good idea at the time!"
"Screw this, I'm gonna hang up."
"Don't hang up!!"
****
"Just take it!" Dean tossed the phone back.
"I should just hang up." Sam proclaimed.
"Don't you dare hang up!" Dena shot back. Sam tossed the phone back to his brother and bolted from the room. "SAM! Dammit!!!!"
****
"I can't do this." Gabriel declared. "You take it, here."
"Gabe- what-" Gabriel fled from the room, leaving Cas alone with the phone.
****
".....Hello?" Dean said awkwardly.
"....Dean?" Cas questioned.
"Oh my god, were you the one on the phone the whole time?"
"What? No."
"Where's Gabriel?"
"Where's Sam?"
"Sam ran away."
"Gabriel has left the building, may I please take a message?"
"Tell him he has a hot brother."
"Will do, thank you kind sir."
"Cas, we gotta get them back together."
"How?"
"I don't know..... What's a movie cliche that never fails?"
"I don't know, you've seen more chick flicks then I have."
"Have not!"
"Ohhhhhhh, yes you have."
"Have n-"
"Bye Dean!" Cas hung up. Dean swore and tossed Sam's phone back on the couch. His own phone rang a minute later, a geeky picture of Charlie popping up on the caller ID.
"What's up loser?" He answered.
"Hey nerd," Charlie replied. "So for starters, I'm SO SORRY my party broke up Sabriel-"
"It's okay,"
"NO IT'S NOT. IT'S NOT OKAY."
"Whatever Watson. What's up?"
"Well, I was checking to see if you guys were still coming to Karaoke Night at the Roadhouse because you and Cas told Jo you were coming like weeks ago, and that you'd bring Sam and Gabriel, but now that Sam and Gabriel are broken up she wasn't sure, soooooo," Dean paused.
"Oh we're definitely coming." He confirmed. "In fact, you've just given me the perfect idea on how to get Sabriel back together."
"Well then YAY! See you on Friday!"
*****
"I don't wanna go," Sam complained, his voice wavering. "I wanna stay home and wallow some more."
"It'll be good for you to get out of the house," Dean countered. "We don't have to stay that long."
"Doesn't matter. Even a second in there is going to be awful."
"Yeah, well we promised Charlie and Jo that we'd be there so tough shit, we're going."
"Wow. How sensitive of you. If you broke up with Cas, I wouldn't make YOU go." Dean put a hand over his heart.
"Don't you DARE curse my angel and me like that." He warned. "Now let's go."
*****
"Why do I have to go to stupid karaoke night?" Gabriel complained.
"Because it's a social event and you enjoy those." Cas insisted.
"But you HATE them, so why are we BOTH going somewhere where we're both going to suuuuffffffeerrrr?"
"Because we promised Charlie and Jo."
"You mean YOU promised Charlie and Jo."
"And I said I'd bring you, so too bad!"
"Ugh." Gabriel stared at the floor. "Is Dean gonna be there?"
"Yeah, why?"
"He's probably gonna beat the shit out of me."
"And you probably deserve it. Let's go." Cas reached for the door.
"Is Sam gonna be there?" Gabe whispered.
"....I don't know," Cas admitted.
"I don't think I should go anywhere near him," Gabriel went on. "He hates me."
"We'll see about that."
*******
And as luck would have it, well, more like as Dean and Cas had planned it, they all showed up at the Roadhouse within a few minutes of each other.
Karaoke night was already in full swing at the Roadhouse, and the place was generally packed with people. Dean took in the scene and grinned, trying not to burst out laughing when he saw Charlie on the stage, belting out the Pokemon theme song like it was a Queen classic.
Jo was behind the bar, staring at Charlie and trying so hard not to die both of embarrassment and laughter.
Sam scanned the room for any sign of Cas or Gabriel, but the room was too crowded.
"C'mon," Dean urged him forward, leading him towards a booth near the stage.
Sam froze when he spotted the two people already sitting at the booth.
"Hey," Cas waved. Gabriel's eyes widened, and he instantly started to dive out of the booth, only for Cas to grab him by the neck and pull him back. "No running."
"Sit," Dean instructed. Sam shook his head.
"No." He declared.
"Sammy, you both are being childish about it and we all know it, so let's just settle this and move on so that it'll stop being awkward for me and Cas."
"Well at least we know what you REALLY care about now," Gabriel grumbled.
"Would you prefer if I was more focused on bashing your face in?" Gabriel shut up, and Sam and Dean sat down.
"Now I'm gonna go Dr. Phil on you two, and we're gonna talk this out." Cas explained. "Let's start at the beginning. Gabriel?"
"What?"
"Why the fuck would you kiss another person, let alone a girl, when you were at a party with your boyfriend?" Cas asked calmly. Gabriel shot him a death glare.
"I don't wanna listen to this," Sam started, trying to escape.
"Too bad," Dean shoved him back into his seat. "Answer the question, Gabe."
"She was an old friend from middle school," Gabriel explained. "And she broke up with her boyfriend like two days before the party. The same boyfriend, I might add, that she'd been dating since before I'd even met her. And she saw him with another girl at the party and got jealous and wanted to make him jealous, so she asked if I would act like her date so that he'd get mad. It was supposed to be favor, and it wasn't supposed to escalate to kissing- I TOLD her that I was dating you, Sam, and she understood that concern. But then her ex kissed his date right in front of her, so she got pissed and kissed me just as you walked in. I didn't see you, and I knew the whole act would've been for nothing if I shoved her away, so I played along for two seconds, and then I saw you. And I TRIED to explain that to you at the party, but you wouldn't listen to me!"
"Which brings us to part two," Cas went on. "Samuel. Why did you refuse to hear his reasonable explanation?
"You're not seriously buying that story, are you?" Sam countered.
"Sam, just shut up and answer the question," Dean insisted.
"I just saw my boyfriend, someone I care about and trusted with A LOT of things, kiss a total stranger, for no apparent reason. I was a little ticked off, and betrayed, so forgive me if I snapped and didn't feel like listening to your explanation at the time." Sam offered.
"Well there you have it," Cas said. "Logical and logical. Now can we please put all of this behind us and have you two make up and maybe get back together?" Gabriel glanced at Sam, daring to look hopeful.
".....Doubtful," Sam muttered. Cas and Dean groaned.
"Well, we tried!" Dean declared. "Now neither of you get to mope to us about it, and don't make us the middle man anymore, I'm done!"
"Dean-" Cas started.
"Stubborn ass little brother," Dean muttered.
"Why?" Gabriel asked.
"Why what?" Sam countered.
"WHY won't you forgive me?"
"Because I trusted you and you betrayed me!"
"I didn't betray you!"
"Yes you did,"
"Well I didn't mean too!"
"Doesn't matter,"
"Well..... What do I have to do to fix it?" Sam shrugged.
"That's for you to figure out, good luck. And until you do, I'd rather not be in the same room as you." He climbed out of the booth, Cas and Dean letting him go with a sigh.
"Sam-" Gabriel started. The moose kept walking, and Gabe scrambled out of the booth to run after him.
"Betcha a blowjob they'll kiss by the end of the night," Cas offered.
"Why would you bet-" Dean began.
"Do you have money?"
"No,"
"Exactly. I'm betting something I can give you if I lose."
"Sam's pissed, they'll never kiss tonight. Tomorrow maybe, but not tonight."
"Then it would be an easy wager to make."
"....Okay," They shook on it. Clapping echoed in the Roadhouse as someone's karaoke ended, and the stage freed up.
"Sam!" Gabriel called again, but he was already halfway to the door, set on leaving, even if it meant he would walk home. Gabriel wracked his brain. He'd have to make some sort of a grand gesture. Sam would never listen to him now, he was leaving, but if Gabe could get his attention....
Gabriel ran over and jumped on the karaoke stage in true spontaneous fashion, the microphone screeching as he grabbed it.
"I never meant to be so bad to you!" He half yelled, half sang desperately. Sam paused. "One thing I said that I would never do!"
"Is he-" Cas started, his eyes wide.
"OH MY GOD," Dean hissed.
"A look from you and I would fall from grace!" Gabe kept going, not caring that the entire roadhouse was watching, confused. The only person who's attention he wanted still had his back turned to him. "And that would wipe this smile right from my face,"
Dean frantically swatted at Cas, excited.
"He's singing Asia!" He hissed. Cas swatted at him back, both of them freaking out like overexcited fangirls.
Sam slowly turned around, his eyes meeting Gabriel's.
"Do you remember when we used to dance?" Gabriel went on, throwing his arms out. "And incident arose from circumstance! One thing lead to another, we were young, And we would scream together songs unsung...." He stopped, staring at Sam while everybody else stared at him. Sam sighed, a soft smile slowly growing on his face.
"It was the heat of the moment!" He replied, half the roadhouse whipping around to stare at him. "Telling me what your heart meant, The heat of the moment shone in your eyeeeees,"
"And now you find yourself in eighty two," They stared singing together as Sam walked towards the stage. Jo snuck over to the karaoke machine and started up the background music to the song as Sabriel kept singing. "The disco hot spots hold no charm for you,
"You can't concern yourself with bigger things
You catch the pearl and ride the dragon's wings
'Cause it's the heat of the moment
Heat of the moment, the heat of the moment
Shone in your eyes
And when your looks are gone and you're alone
How many nights you sit beside the phone
What were the things you wanted for yourself
Teenage ambitions you'll remember well
It was the heat of the moment
Telling me what your heart meant
The heat of the moment shone in your eyes
It was the heat of the moment
Heat of the moment, heat of the moment
Shone in your eyes
Heat of the moment, heat of the moment
Heat of the moment
Heat of the moment, heat of the moment!"
The crowd cheered, and Gabriel glanced at Sam.
"Am I forgive now?" He asked.
"Screw it, sure." Sam admitted. He grabbed Gabriel by the collar and kissed him.
"SUCCESS!!!" Cas yelled out, highfiving Dean.
"WE DID IT!!" Dean yelled back. Up on the stage, Sam and Gabriel kissed again. Cas spotted them and grinned wider.
"HA!" He pointed at Dean. "They kissed! You owe me a blowjob!"
