Epilogue: The Awakening

     Rhys woke.
He was in a cave, on a stone slab with leather draped over it.
Relay stood over him.
He looked at his body, now covered in strange spirals, carved into him.
Relay was the same, much of his body covered in symbols.
Every Wendigo or Ghoul who wasn't eaten or torn apart when they passed was there, all decorated with similar patterns.

     "What..." Rhys trailed off.

"Well, some guy came to us, said that if we terrorized the new group of people coming to the island we could come back to life, so I marked us all as Wendigos," Relay said, "we only become Wendigos at night, and don't attack each other instinctively anymore, but we have the benefits of being Wendigos at daytime and nighttime!"

     Rhys was in shock.
He was alive.
And so was Relay.

"Yeah, also, we only starve at night, which means that we can't die of hunger anymore!" Relay said, helping Rhys off of the slab.

Rhys noticed that he had more intricate markings compared to everyone else, meaning that he was the leader.

"Why am I the leader?" He asked.

     Relay looked at him.

"You organized the islanders well, why not you?!" Relay said.

"True..." Rhys replied, "I need some time to think."

He was given all the time he needed, thinking about what had happened.
He left the cave, seeing a group of ships on the horizon.

Relay found Rhys watching two hundred people disembarking three ships, both watched, fearful of what may come to the island.

"We have to kill them if they reach too far into the forest for wood," Rhys said.

Relay nodded, knowing that they had to defend the island.

The pair looked into the distance and sighed.

The sun began to set and they felt themselves start their transformation, it was as painful as it was last time but they were more used to it now.
