Chapter two: the cold

The people who were dumped onto the island began suffering from cold and hunger, they had to quickly preserve all of the food they had collected from animals and plants, trying their best to ration their pork, as it was the least common type of meat on the island.

Rhys had found that the Sweetberry bushes grew their berries very quickly, as in daily, which meant that these bushes were the perfect food source.

However, the cold was prevalent everywhere, and hunger was an increasing issue.

Three main tribes were created on the island: the Bushies, made of people who tried religion and connecting with nature to make problems go away. The Islanders, who made fishing and farming their only ways of collecting food. And the Mountaners, who set up on the tallest peak of the mountain.

There were small groups that eventually merged with each other or the big three, with Rhys taking a position of power in the Islander tribe on accident, but he used his knowledge of forestcraft to assist the people, building shelter and getting warm clothing on everybody's backs.

Eventually he left the Islanders for a short time to find his sister, who helped create a tribe that was made up of pacifists, when he found her, they went into the woods to talk, as it had been a few weeks since they were dropped off.

"Rhys! I thought you died! Why didn't you contact me?" Lisa asked him, exclaiming her frustration.

"I'm sorry, I was busy helping organize a civilization, I couldn't talk, I was too busy being told I was the leader of a tribe when I didn't want to," Rhys said, patting his sister on the back and kissing her on the forehead, "you didn't have to come with me, you should have stayed home with our parents, not come here with me to this hellhole."

Lisa knew she should've listened to her family and stayed behind, but she didn't want to see her brother for the last time like that, shoved into a police car.
She had no idea that she would instead have a worse fate.

"Go back to your group, alright? I gotta go," Rhys said, running back to the Islanders.

When he returned, many of his new citizens were bloodstained and wounded, however, he was immediately approached by a scout who told him everything.

"So... something broke into the town, we don't know how, but we managed to come out alive, mostly, we haven't touched the corpse at all, and I think it looks a little familiar," the scout, who everybody called Relay, said.

When they reached the corpse, Rhys used a stick to turn it over, his eyes widened, and he stepped back.
He knew this person, it was Snake, the mute he'd first met with Markus.
But where was Markus? The pair were Islanders, but only one returned.

Another group of scouts returned soon after his revelation and revealed that Markus had been eaten, possibly by animals, the only identifying feature of the bones was the clothing and the items: three sweetberries and a bone whistle.

Rhys convened with the first scout, Relay.
They couldn't let anyone know that they could resort to cannibalism, it was too dangerous.

The Bushies then sent a delegate, telling everyone of a feast.
Rhys told the Islanders not to go, choosing a group of himself, Relay, and one more person to go, all three able to run quickly and all light on their feet, in peak condition for hunting.

Rhys and his team of Relay and the extra all arrived, the Bushies had turned to cannibalism, the trio knew it, so Rhys told the extra to tell the rest of the Islanders while he and Relay left to the feast, entering to find a group of Mountainers, and a few other people from lesser tribes.

Rhys went around, telling the leaders of each group to not eat the meat provided, as it was likely all tainted, and the leaders spread it to their people.

When the feast arrived, the Bushie group ravenously ate, and Rhys and Relay backed away from the table, being confronted by the Bushie guards.

Rhys and Relay said they had important things to do, and the guards fell for it, with Rhys running to warn Lisa and Relay running to warn the other tribes.
The screams at the table were heard for an incredible distance, echoing off of the ravine it was set in and into the air, for all to hear the slaughter that night, with the two survivors being hunted into the morning, the Bushies stopped, and the leader of the Bushie tribe apologizing to the Islanders.

Rhys eventually reached his sister's tribe, hungry and cold, he found that the place was in horrible shape, with many of the pacifists dead or dying.
The Bushies had slaughtered here as well, and Lisa lay, impaled with a stone spear, dying as her brother fell mere feet away from her, dragging himself up to her, kneeling, he gazed upon the horrible wounds upon her body inflicted by stone weapons, he felt incredible hunter and cold surround him, eating him from the inside and outside.

He gazed at her body... fresh meat... but he couldn't, he looked at his hands, the blood on them tempting him, a string of saliva running down his chin.

An hour later and he was weeping at what he had done, damming himself for the horrible crime he had committed.
He'd eaten his own kin.
