chapter nineteen
CHAPTER NINETEEN
Paul stepped out of the shower, towel drying his wet hair. He glanced around the room, noticing that Serena was not there. However, his worry quickly faded as he realized the sliding door to the balcony was open.
With a smile, he wrapped the towel around his waist and made his way towards the balcony, assuming she was probably enjoying the view.
Paul padded over to the balcony, where he found Serena leaning on the railing, gazing out at the picturesque view. He stepped up beside her, mirroring her position as he leaned against the railing as well.
"I never truly understood how much I missed the ocean until I moved to the city," she confessed, her eyes fixed on the orange sky, which was now painted with the setting sun.
Paul inquired casually, "Did you like living in the city?"
Serena exhaled thoughtfully, "It was a bit of a love-hate relationship, you know? There were times I enjoyed it, and times I didn't. But living in a place surrounded by nature is just unbeatable."
He then continued, genuinely curious, "Do you miss the city?"
In response, Serena turned to look up at him, a warm smile gracing her lips.
"I do, most of the time," she admitted, observing Paul's face as his expression seemed to reflect some inner conflict with her answer. "But home is where the heart is, and I've always known deep down that I'd return to La Push," Serena added, only to abruptly halt herself.
Curiosity piqued, Paul asked anxiously, "What were you going to say?"
Serena gazed directly into his eyes, the weight of her words hanging in the air between them. "Maybe I've always belonged there," she said softly, the significance of her meaning not lost on her.
Paul felt his heart race as he leaned forward, but he knew deep down that this wasn't the right moment. Instead, he gently pressed his lips against her forehead, murmuring, "I'll make sure that maybe turns into a certainty, Serena... just a little longer."
She leaned her head against his chest, her smile warm and comforting as he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into an embrace. Paul held her close, his chin resting on the top of her head. They stood there in a comfortable silence, both lost in their own thoughts.
The sun had almost completely set, casting the balcony in a soft, dusky glow. The cool evening air wrapped around them, as the sound of the waves crashing on the shore below provided a soothing background melody.
Serena was grateful for the pace at which Paul was taking things. This slow, deliberate approach was allowing her heart to heal in a way that felt right and meaningful.
They had both ran from each other in the past, without trying hard enough to save what they had. But now, here under the fading sunlight, everything seemed to be falling into place in a profoundly natural and beautiful way.
The time spent apart hadn't weakened their feelings for each other. Instead, it was the yearning for one another's company that had only intensified their emotions. This longing was born out of a genuine connection, one that preceded the phenomenon of imprinting.
As they held each other in the dim light of the setting sun, the depth of their love grew stronger with each passing moment.
Their souls were intertwined, bound together in a way that transcended time and distance. Even when apart, they stayed connected, united in their emotional bond.
This unbroken connection had paved the way for healing, allowing them to lay a strong foundation upon which they could move forward. All they needed now was to meet each other halfway to forge an unbreakable and lasting union.
The remainder of their vacation had been truly delightful, with both of them experiencing a sense of contentment during those carefree times. However, as the vacation came to an end, they were both unhappy to return, realizing that the joy they had experienced was only a brief respite from the reality of the looming danger their loved ones were soon to face.
The car ride home was shrouded in silence, neither of them willing to speak and ruin the precious remnants of the vacation. The vacation officially came to an end only upon their return to La Push, as they begrudgingly stepped out of the vehicle.
Paul had held Serena's hand throughout the entire car ride, providing a comforting presence that spoke volumes even without words. Although their relationship wasn't officially defined yet, the time they'd shared together on vacation had significantly strengthened the bond between them, laying a solid foundation for the love and connection they both longed for.
They walked towards the house, hands still entwined, the weight of the impending battle weighing heavily on their minds. They knew this brief moment of togetherness would soon be interrupted, bringing them back to reality.
Once they reached the front door, Paul sighed, pulling Serena closer. He wanted to say something, anything, but the words seemed to fail him.
With a sigh, Paul drew Serena closer to him, the weight of their unspoken thoughts hanging in the air. He wanted to say something, to express what he was feeling, but the right words seemed to elude him.
Standing on the front porch, they shared a moment of silence, their hands still holding each other tightly, as if trying to hold onto the sliver of peace they had left before they would be drawn back into the storm.
Serena's voice was barely above a whisper as she spoke, her words spoken with a mix of worry and determination. "Please come back safe, Paul. All of you, please make sure you all return unharmed."
Paul's grip on Serena's hand tightened slightly at her words, the gravity of the situation hanging heavily between them. He glanced down, meeting her gaze, and saw the mixture of worry and trust in her eyes.
With a soft smile, he gently squeezed her hand, replying softly, "We'll be careful, I promise. We'll come back unscathed, all of us."
His reassurance seemed to provide some comfort to her, her shoulders slightly relaxing as she took in his words. She knew the danger they would soon be facing, but she also trusted in Paul and the rest of the pack's abilities to come back.
She gave him a small smile in return, holding his gaze for a moment before she spoke again, "I'll be counting on it."
