It was when I slung the silver scarf across my hips that I realized the dress hugging my body was too expensive for the event tonight. After Brenda decided to pair me up with an famous producer — Darren Ward, things had begun to grow great between the two of us. It was the longest relationship I had been in since I had arrived to Minneapolis, lasting over three weeks.
Darren was a sweet and kind man that mostly showed his affections through materials. At first it was enjoyable but the feeling faded once I realized what the relationship was turning into — Me just willingly accepting things and Darren willingly giving them to me as if needing to give me things in order for our relationship to remain secure.
To say the least, I revealed the way our relationship was heading to Darren and he understood completely and let me continue to be an independent woman. I was able to do things on my own and still manage to gain a boyfriend.
Tonight was a giant night for his label apparently, where various celebrities would be in attendance. Strangely, I had wondered if Prince would be present but pushed the thought away and continued to apply the blood red lipstick across my lips.
"Hey." Brenda called from the door, creamy body-con hugging her hips. "You ready?"
With a weak smile, I nodded. "Yeah, is Darren here?"
"He sent a limo." She said, wiggling her eyebrows with a grin. I stifled a laugh and lifted up a small part of the material on my dress and walked towards the door.
I passed her and walked down the stairs. "I told him to stop doing stuff like that."
"Denise, we're going to an event with tons of rich people and celebrities. Stop complainin ' that he sent a limo." I rolled my eyes and opened the door to come across said limo that was colored white.
I sighed, "I wonder who's going to be there." I wondered even though my mind immediately drifted towards a man who seemed to constantly be on my mind since I started preparing to go to the event. I knew it was a slim chance he would be there but a small part of me hoped he would be.
"Hopefully someone I can hook myself up with." Brenda winked before bumping shoulders with me and sliding in the limo. I smiled at her before shaking my head and entering soon after.
Once arriving to the event, the overwhelming amount of people in attendance shocked me and the fact that people with camera's surrounded the entrance made me grow anxious. Brenda seemed to ravish in it once we had gotten out of the limo, she smiled and waved while I nervously did the same before entering the building.
It was then that I was able to release a breath of relief. Various celebrities surrounded, some that I knew and some that I hadn't met. The only person I was on search for was Darren who seemed to unfortunately be no where in sight.
"I'm going to get a drink." Brenda said into my ear over the loud music. I just responded with a nod but she had already turned her back and darted towards the bar. I released a breath and roamed through the crowd but eventually gave up searching for Darren after a couple of hours passed.
With each tick of the clock and with each shade that the sky grew darker until it reached pitch black, numerous guest had poured in. It was overwhelming but I grew used to the number of celebrities in one area when some began to engage in conversation with me.
Never had I imagined that I would be associating myself with the likes of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Barry Gordy and others. It was all so strange and different but they all seemed to enjoy my company.
I felt a hand tap against my shoulder only for me to turn around and deliver a surprise smile at Chick's sudden presence.
"Hey." I said, excusing myself from the current group to talk. "What are you doing here?" I asked even though I was sure of the answer.
Chick shrugged, "To mingle. What about you?"
"It's my boyfriend's party — Darren Ward?" I said with a questioning tone in wonders if Chick knows of him.
He looked shocked, "You're dating Darren Ward?"
I nodded.
"Unfortunately I can't seem to find him. It's like he isn't even here." I laughed off to hide my disappointment. Gordon seemed to sense it and gave a weak smile.
"You'll find him. Hey, I have to ask — did you ever call him?" My throat tightened at what Chick was questioning me on and hesitantly responded with a shake to my head. "Didn't think so."
I tried not to seem too interested when I asked, "Why — did he .. say something?" I'm not sure why I was interested to know if Prince has been thinking about me since our last encounter three weeks ago, but I was not able to decipher my own emotions to figure it out.
"He was a little pissed but, I'm sure he's over it. Did you wanna' talk to him—"
"No!" I blurted urgently causing Chick to widen his eyes then furrow his brows. "I mean, I just don't want to talk to him. I'm sure he'll only try to convince me more to take on whatever he is planning."
Chick stared at me for a few seconds, "You should really take him up on his offer, he isn't that bad." I didn't have a chance to respond before Chick walked away and left me alone in a crowd of people. I sighed at the sight of his back and turned back around to see that the current group I was with seemed to have forgotten all about me.
In me I know I wanted to leave but then again I reminded myself that it has only been three hours and that these parties usually last until the morning. Instead of pursing my want of going home, I wandered off to find Brenda.
Darren's home is massive so I am not surprised when I find myself getting lost. I was so entranced by the architecture that when piano notes begin to enter my ears, it went unnoticed to me until I snapped out of it. Hesitantly I followed the sound, only to come across a room that had double doors.
With ease I peeked inside, finding a figure sitting at the piano. My eyebrows briefly furrowed until the chords of the piano enchanted me into a haze. I was quiet, but my figure fell against the door once I stepped on the material of my dress.
Once I hit the ground the keys moving on the piano ended. I felt my face heat up in embarrassment as I struggled to get to my feet.
"I would help but the sight is just too enjoyable."
My actions came to an abrupt halt as his voice filled my ears. I bit my lip and looked over only to see the back of his head. Prince began to play the piano again but I didn't let that stop me from speaking.
"I wasn't expecting you to help anyway." I mumbled but someway somehow he managed to hear me and stopped playing in order to turn around. We seemed to have a stare down for what seems like minutes until I managed to get to my feet.
"Close the door." Prince ordered without a beat, still keeping eye contact with me. My lips parted at his request but my body stayed frozen until he lifted to his feet and advanced towards me with poise.
His outfit consisted of side-buttoned black pants and a strange black patterned jacket. It was nothing short of bizarre but he managed to effortlessly pull it off. His heels were high enough to where we remained at eye level, lips aligned, eyes aligned.
I grew nervous once Prince entered my personal space and snuck his hands around my back.
"Woah wait—"
He shushed me all the while and closed the door with his fingers. "Just closing the door." His sneaky smile however told me otherwise.
"What do you want?" I asked with a blank expression.
Prince rolled in his lips then briefly looked down at mine, "For you to hear me out before you say no." Immediately I have an idea on what he is referring to and scoffed before rolling my eyes. I barely was able to turn around and open the door before his hands grasped my wrist tightly causing me to wince.
"Let. Go." I growled with my teeth clenched. I couldn't comprehend why he didn't seem to understand the concept of no. Did he not understand the word? Or what the two letters put together meant? It had been weeks since he wanted me to be apart of what ever project that he was putting together and I denied it. It was irritating that he couldn't leave it alone.
Prince held down his grin, "Why? Scared I'll do somethin'?" I inhaled slowly and held within my desires once my breast slightly rubbed against his chest. I was suffocating. He was everywhere, his scent was all over me and I kicked myself for wanting it.
"I know you won't." I chided confidently.
Prince tilted his head, lifting a brow. "How can you be so sure?"
I swallowed hardly,"Because it would be really stupid of you to hurt the girl you apparently need and keep begging to join whatever you're planning." I had no idea if that's what he was thinking or not, but I could only take a guess and be confident in it enough to believe it. Judging by the stifled laugh that released from his nose, I could only assume that I was incorrect.
"Is that a challenge." He whispered causing his cool breath to brush against my lips. I remained calm and raised a pointed brow of my own.
"No," I let my lips extend into a smirk. "It's a fact." Having said that, I gave him and his plump lips one last look before darting out of the room and down the stairs. I struggled to shake off the feeling of a heat taking place between my thighs by pushing the dark strands of hair away from my face. The nerve of him, to back me into a corner, try to intimidate me and believe that I'll give in like a puppy.
I felt proud that I resisted the urges to just pull him towards me by his jacket and slant my lips hotly over his. I wouldn't be surprised if he entertained the idea of it, he seemed interested enough. But I had Darren, whom I considered leaving the party without. I only had the options of grabbing a drunken Brenda and jumping in the limo.
I knew it was time to call it a night.
