2 - Getting the Team Together
Ludovit knew that he'd never get far if everyone on The Isle knew he was the heir to an empire of darkness and evil. The Isle was a place of lawlessness, but few would dare approach a demon.
Thankfully, Maleficent's descendants had a good grip on the place, forming The Order of the Raven. They watched over The Isle, agents of karma who kept even the most hardened criminals awake at night. They were less of a police force and more of a mafia.
He could do black magic* without attracting suspicion and would easily blend in. So long as the leader of The Order, Malignant, great-granddaughter of the dark fairy sorceress Maleficent, suspected nothing. He didn't really interact with other Order members, sticking to parts of The Isle they were rarely seen, like the port.
The Order didn't really care for the port, but would occasionally send a member of The Order to keep watch. Most there had no time for magicians unless they were hired, but leaving them unsupervised would be disastrous.
He took the form of a light-brown skinned, lanky teenager with black eyes and hair, dressed himself like a Victorian gentleman in mourning, hid his ukrainian accent with a british one, and took the name "Diablerie". The perfect cover.
Diablerie walked into a fish and chips shop, wanting to get a good impression of the area and an excuse to eat fish and chips. When he entered, he saw a teenage girl with dark brown skin and blue braided hair delicately carrying several glass beer mugs. And it wasn't even noon.
"Need some help, barmaid?"
The girl shot him a dirty look. "If you're going to flirt, at least learn my name!"
Diablerie saw that the girl's apron was embroidered with a name: Uma.
"Uma...Fantastic name!"
Uma rolled her eyes and walked away. Too many guys had flirted with her before.
Diablerie took a seat, and found himself sitting next to the most infamous cat burglar in all of the Isle. Richard De Vil, the great-grandson of the cruelest and craziest heiress ever.
He had his platinum blonde hair spiked upward, a large build, a bronzed complexion, and wore a leopard fur and leather coat, tall, heavy boots, and baggy pants. Despite
what he'd like you to think, he was just barely sixteen.
"New to this part of town?"
Diablerie nodded. "You must be Richard De Vil."
"Call me Wildcat, please. Richard's my dad.
Did ya' hear about the new king's plan to get kids from here over to some fancy prep school in Auradon?"
Diablerie's eyes lit up. This would make the plan a lot easier.
"No, but I have trouble keeping up with current events."
He looked around to see if anyone was eavesdropping. Nobody was, but he performed a spell to mute the sound where they sat.
Wildcat was astonished. "You really are Order!"
"Quite right!
Now, listen, and listen close.
I've got a plan to get the Fairy Godmother's wand and use it to break the barrier of this place. We just have to get into this program in Auradon."
"Easier said than done. Only three kids from here are allowed in, and there's no way in hell it'll be me."
"That can be arranged. Surely someone as intelligent and handsome as you deserves a chance."
"Thank you, but I don't think that I will."
"You will. I need someone who knows how to steal valuables without being noticed for my plan. Of course, if you think there's someone else who can do it-"
Wildcat banged the table. "I'm in!"
Diablerie smiled. "Good. Is there anyone you'd like to bring along?"
Wildcat brought him to a church in the middle of the Isle. It was grand and magnificent.
"I never saw you as a man of faith, Wildcat."
"I'm not. I just like one of the nuns here, Zelie*."
Diablerie found it silly. "Really? Of all the beautiful women on the island, you picked a nun as the object of your affection?"
Wildcat got defensive. "If you saw her, you would understand."
Diablerie couldn't enter the church, not with him being a demon. "You get her, and we'll talk with her."
"Great!"
Wildcat soon returned with a nun with black hair and mahogany skin. Her hair was kind of covered, but only at the top. Her hair was exceptionally long, too. She at least dressed fairly conservatively.
"Great, now a member of the Order wants me now! Is there some demon out there who wants to tempt me, too?"
Diablerie chuckled. "You're not really my type."
Zelie glared at him. "Fine then, would you care to introduce yourself?"
"My name is Diablerie." He reached out to shake her hand, but Zelie seemed disgusted by his touch.
"Zelie Frollo. Don't touch me, please."
Diablerie knelt down to Zelie's level. "Fine, then.
How would you like to help free this island from its barrier?"
Zelie's mood went from uptight to hopeful. "There's nothing more that I'd like to do!"
"Great! If you help us out, you'll get a chance to do that."
Zelie's mood was dampened. "But only the Fairy Godmother can do that. Wait..."
"It's for a good cause, Zelie. I'm sure you're aware of how the ends justify the means, yes?"
Zelie considered Diablerie's words for a moment. "I understand, and I need to get out of this dirty place. There's nothing here but gypsies, tramps, and thieves. But I am not getting my hands dirty. Understand?"
Diablerie nodded. "Yes, I do."
That night, Diablerie went over to the recruiter's office who was just closing up shop.
"Good evening."
The recruiter gave him a sideways glance. "You're too late.
I've already chosen which three are worthy and I'm just about to send the message to Auradon."
"Really?" Diablerie touched the stranger's shoulder, and a surge of magical energy went through them both and his eyes began to glow. "I think that you should change that list to Diablerie, Richard De Vil, and Zelie Frollo."
The recruiter was now completely under Diablerie's influence. "But of course, I'll get right to it."
Morning came, and so did a limo, floating over the sea. A crowd formed, and three teenage girls were extremely giddy at the sight of it. A herald stepped out of the car.
"Would Zelie Frollo, Diablerie, and Richard De Vil step out from the crowd?"
The three teenage girls' spirits were dampened. They really thought they'd be the ones to get out of the ghetto.
Diablerie felt a pang of guilt seeing them like this, but stepped into the limo anyway.
Diablerie felt out of place in the clean, pristine, and royal interior. It reminded him of the fact that he was taking advantage of the young king's generosity to serve his father.
Wildcat found that there were drawers full of snacks, and Zelie got to eating the chocolate.
Diablerie was taken aback. "Zelie? It's not even noon."
"You're Order. You can't judge me."
"Fine, fine, I won't."
There was silence. Wildcat made an attempt to lockpick a certain drawer, but Diablerie told him to stop.
Prince Ben and his girlfriend, Princess Audrey, waited with excitement to meet the new students. Well, Ben was excited, Audrey was nervous.
They were surprised to see a tall sorcerer, a large punk kid, and a nun step out of the limo.
King Ben remembered something. "Right, right, there was a last-minute change, wasn't there?"
Diablerie chuckled "Yes, there was. But does it matter?"
