Just A Dance

A/N: I know that this has practically been done to death, but the idea popped into my head and I kind of had to write it. So, here's my take on the ending scene of D3, where Audrey drags Harry into dancing with her. Complete with Harry and Audrey friendship, a bit of Huma, and complete destruction of Haudrey subtext from that scene (sorry... But not really).
OR
In which Audrey realizes that she should be proud of herself even if Ben doesn't love her.
There's also a few background relationships if you squint. Hope you enjoy!

Requested by: No one

Audrey finds herself smiling wider than she has in a long time as she spins around, locking eyes with the hook-handed pirate she'd dragged into a dance. She feels her face heat up a bit under his intense gaze, so much different than-

No. No. Can't let my brain go there. Not again.

Determined to cast those thoughts from her mind, she just dances harder, picking up the speed of her feet, adding superfluous spins, and practically dipping herself, much to the surprise of her dance partner.

"Pretty good there, princess," he comments as they continue to dance along with everyone else who's just having fun.

"Thanks," she says breathlessly, still a little winded, "You're not so terrible yourself."

"Why thank you," he grins, and Audrey can't help but smile back as her heart does a little gymnastic routine.

Audrey knows she isn't in love with him. Heck, she's never been in love with anyone. She doesn't even know this random pirate she just met today, after attempting to kill him. But she can't deny the fact that it's kind of nice to be dancing with a handsome boy. Who's not a prince. She grins.

Look at me now, Grammy.

A pirate instead of a prince. A villain kid, no less. Who isn't Ben.

Shit.

Audrey winces, cursing herself for her mistake, because even at the thought of his name, she can't help but look over Harry's shoulder and see him. Dancing with Mal. Staring into each other's eyes, grinning like idiots, pressed against each other-

Audrey turns away sharply, disgust written all over her features. Almost immediately, an enormous ball of guilt settles on her stomach, making her feel almost nauseous with the weight of it.

She saved my life.

She ruined it first. She never apologized.

She makes Ben happy.

She stole him from you.

He wasn't mine!

But she spelled him, didn't she? She doesn't deserve someone who she constantly manipulates-

So what if she doesn't deserve him! As if I do?

Audrey shoves her deepest, most jealous thoughts into the darkest corner of her mind.

That's what led to all of this. Wallowing in self pity. Letting your anger consume you. It can never happen again.

"You alright there?" Harry asks.

Audrey's head snaps up. She'd almost forgotten that she's dancing with someone. Supposed to be having fun. It only takes a second for her to put up her defenses again, quick to throw on another smile, "Of course."

As if to prove her point, she lets out a laugh of delight and spins around again, but Harry isn't having it. He narrows his eyes at her, and sighs, "Listen, you don't have to tell me what's bothering you if you don't want to, but at least don't lie to me about being fine."

She blinks, almost impressed with his ability to see right through her. Even Ben could never read her that easily.

Second time. Second time, you idiot!

Audrey takes a sharp breath, spinning both her and Harry behind the far wall.

"What exactly are you doing?" Harry asks, confused but not suspicious. In fact, he seems to be amused. Audrey bites her lip. She feels kind of bad for wanting to use Harry to get over all of her boyfriend problems, but she assumes that the relentless flirt won't care if she's not in it for the long haul.

Take a risk. Just take a breath and go for it.
And she does. She leans in close, closes her eyes, tilts her head to the left, and purses her lips. She sets it up exactly how she was taught a True Love's Kiss should be. But this was not a True Love's Kiss. Far from it, in fact. Because before Audrey can even make the connection, she feels a sharp smack across her cheek.
She stumbles backward, more surprised than hurt.

"You slapped me?" Audrey exclaims indignantly.

Harry huffs, rolling his eyes at her outburst, "Yeah. What did you expect just trying to kiss me like that?"

"You hit girls?" Audrey demands, trying to get her moral high ground back.

"I'll hit anyone who deserves it. I don't discriminate," he scoffs, "Do you only hit guys here?"

"What, no," Audrey shakes her head, "That's not what I meant-"

She feels her face get warm, the embarrassment of the situation finally catching up to her.

Audrey, you absolute moron!

She groans, stumbling over her words, "Oh, gods. I'm- Oh, jeez, I'm so sorry. You just- it seemed like you were interested, I shouldn't have assumed, I'm so sorry-"

Harry just chuckles, "It's alright, I guess. You Auradon people sure are strange. You seem to think one lingering glance is a declaration of true love."

Audrey's face flames even more at that, and she mutters, "I've completely embarrassed myself, haven't I?"

Harry shrugs, and for some reason Audrey feels the need to defend herself, "I mean, you were flirting with like, everyone. It's not like you're taken... Or anything..."

At the sound of footsteps behind her, Audrey turns to a sight that makes her heart skip a beat. She's read this situation very, very wrong. Because a certain sea witch is now standing in front of her, looking very displeased.

"Hey there, darling," Harry greets Uma with a smile.

"What's going on over here? There was a lot of yelling," she responds, focusing her gaze on Harry.

Audrey's voice catches in her throat as she attempts to stutter out an explanation, "I- I just- he didn't do anything, it was all me-"

"Woah there, what exactly did you do?" Uma questions with narrowed eyes.

Thankfully, before Audrey can progress into a full-on panic attack, Harry cuts in for her, "No big deal. She thought I was interested in her, but I ain't."

Audrey, unable to form coherent words at this point, just nods. Uma seems confused, but just shrugs and starts walking away.

"Save me a dance?" Harry calls after her.

She turns over her shoulder to respond, "We'll see!"

He grins and starts to go after her, but Audrey stops him with a hand on his arm.

"I just feel like I need to apologize again," she says remorsefully, "I mean, I really should have realized you and Uma were-"

Audrey almost laughs when she sees Harry's response to that, "No, no. Me and Uma aren't-"

Unable to help herself, Audrey presses a hand to her mouth to stifle her giggle. She understands now.

He could read her because he felt the same way she did. She doesn't know how she missed the way his eyes shine with longing when directed at the daughter of Ursula. The exact way hers do when she looks at Ben.

She can't stop herself from letting out a snort, much to her own horror. But this is just too funny.

He's trying so hard to hide it, the poor thing.
Audrey chuckles as Harry stares at her with pure confusion on his face. She grins.

A little matchmaking. Exactly what I need to get my mind off things. This is something I'm good at.

Now looking a bit more annoyed, Harry demands, "What are you laughing at so hard?"

Audrey finally manages to regain control of herself, "Sorry. It's just funny how bad you are at hiding it."

He looks remarkably like a deer caught in headlights for a person who constantly wears racoon-style eyeliner, "Hiding what?"

Audrey rolls her eyes, "You love her. It's obvious. I was just too caught up in my own shit to realize it."

It takes her a second to realize what the pirate looks so surprised about, "Yeah, I swear."

She leans in and whispers, "Just don't tell my grandmother."

Harry chuckles slightly and replies, "You know, I like you a lot more than I thought I was going to."

"I'll take that as a compliment," she shrugs, looking out to all the other people dancing.

"You should," he agrees, "I already respected you just for threatening Mal and her precious Auradon."

Almost subconsciously, Audrey looks to the purple-haired dragon, who is now talking with Adam and Belle.

"She saved my life," Audrey argues.

He chuckles, "Ruined it first."

She does a double take at that, stunned at the near replication of her thoughts earlier.

"Damn. You are good at reading people, aren't you?"

"Better than most people give me credit for," he sighs, "She really is a bitch, isn't she?"

Watching as Mal brushes past some of the new villain kids walking up to her in favor of dancing with her new fiance, Audrey just stays silent. She glances at the other people around her. Evie is dancing with Dizzy and Celia- Well, dancing is a generous term. It's more like they're hopping around in circles and laughing a lot.

Doug and Chad are in the middle of their exceedingly long handshake. Audrey rolls her eyes. They made that thing up when they are seven, and still do it at almost any chance.
Jane and Lonnie are talking with some new VKs, and Lonnie looks as though she's trying to convince Jane to dance with her.

Once her eyes pass over Uma dancing with Gil, Carlos, and Jay, Audrey turns sharply back to Harry, "What are you still standing here for?"

"What do you mean?"

She gestures over to the sea witch, "Uma. She's over there, you're over here. She said if you wanted a dance, you'd have to work for it."

"When did she say that?"

Audrey shrugs, "The subtext was there. Now, get out of here!"

"What about you?"

She scoffs, "What about me? I'll be fine. I do have friends, you know. Me, Doug, and Chad have been friends for like 10 years, I was one of the first people to talk to Lonnie when she transferred here, me and Jane have known each other since we were in diapers, and Ben-"

Her voice cracks at that last name, but she smiles again, "Point is, I'll be fine. If anyone knows how lucky you are to love someone who loves you back, it's me."

"Are you sure about that?"

She rolls her eyes, "Pretty sure, yeah. Listen, if you're too much of a coward to do it for yourself, then do it because I can't."

"That doesn't make sense-"

"Just go already!"

Audrey softly shoves him forward and smiles as he walks up to Uma.

"Hey."

Audrey startles at the small voice to her right. She looks down to see one of the new VKs smiling up at her.

"Hi there," Audrey greets hesitantly.

"Hi," the kid smiles back with a face full of missing teeth, "You're Audrey, right?"

"That's me."

"I wanted to thank you."

Audrey does a double take at that. What on Earth could this child want to thank her for? She stutters slightly, "Uh... What for, sweetie?"

"For stealing the scepter and attacking Auradon," the kid smiles as Audrey winces, "Without you, the stupid Queen never would have realized that taking down the barrier made her look better."

Audrey has to cover her mouth with her hand to keep from bursting into laughter at that.

After a few seconds, she mostly regains her composure and laughs only a little when replying, "That's not very nice."

The child shrugs, "She's not very nice. She wasn't nice to me earlier. You're much nicer than she is."

"Well, thank you," Audrey grins, then pauses, "Do you have any family here?"

"Yeah," the kid nods, "My big brother and sister. I should probably find them. It was nice talking to you, Audrey!"

The kid grins and waves before darting off back into the crowd. Audrey smiles and waves back before sighing contentedly, eyes skimming over the dancers. Her smile widens at the sight of Harry and Uma dancing and laughing.

"Well, I did one thing right today," she thinks happily before her gaze travels to the Isle, "Maybe two."

Audrey chuckles to herself before finally allowing herself to admit, "She really is a bitch."
