Chapter 6: Steve

"Are we there yet?" I groaned from behind Marx. We had been on the move for four days almost. And there was nothing around us to look at but oak trees that all looked the same.

"Almost there Zannie." Marx looked up from his map and over his shoulder at me.

"You said that the last few times I asked." I half wined.

"Which was just a few minutes ago." Marx said. My feet were sore and fought every step to lift off the ground. My legs wanted to collapse underneath me but I made them hold out just a little longer. Buddy was practically dragging himself behind me. 'Almost there. Almost there. Almost there.' I repeated in my head to keep myself going. Marx was showing signs of being tired but was too determined to give into his tiredness. Admirable if you ask me. And for some reason Marx still hadn't told me where we were going or what we were doing. I just hoped it was some magical sword that could kill Herobrine in one swing, and hopefully let the wielder fly. My legs were so tired that I wished so badly that I could fly.

"Are we there now?" I asked with a little groan.

"For the last time, not yet." Marx answered sounding a little agitated. Then Marx looked down at the map with an unsure look. "It should be right here.." He mumbled quietly. But I heard him.

"Wait, are you saying we are LOST?!" My eyes widened as I began looking around frantically for something other than trees.

"No, I don't think so. The dot is right here, how come I don't see him?" Marx questioned no one.

"What are you two troublemakers looking for?" The voice of a young lady shot up suddenly. It sounded casual but still made me and Marx jump in fright. We looked towards the source of the voice and saw a girl with brown hair, brown eyes, a blueish grey shirt and dark grey pants, leaning up against a tree looking at us.

"Who are you?!" I asked the girl. She only looked a little older than us. Maybe sixteen or seventeen.

"I dunno. Why don't you answer that one for me?" She returned the question. Marx just scratched his head and I stared blankly. "...Good enough. Follow me." She said as she turned around and started walking away.

"W- where are you going?" Marx asked.

"You guys came to see Steve right? Well, he is this way." She spoke over her shoulder.

"Is that why we came here?" I asked my friend.

"Yeah. Crystal said he is the only one who can help." Marx answered. At least I finally knew why we had walked so far. So the two of us quickly ran to catch up with the older girl.

"So what are your guys' names?" She asked.

"I am Marx, and this is Zannie. What is yours?" Marx was the one kind enough to answer for me.

"The name's Evelyn. Steve's granddaughter." She answered.

"Woah! Really?!" I piped up in excitement. "I didn't even Know Steve had a family."

"Yeah, I guess the idea is entertaining in a way.. I guess." Evelyn shrugged.

"So um, how are you not.. old?" Marx asked awkwardly.

"Like my grandpa, I have special capabilities like respawning and staying pretty young." She answered.

"So you like an old lady?" Marx asked. I punched his shoulder a little and scowled at him. "Ow, what?!" He asked, as if it wasn't obvious. Evelyn just chuckled a little.

"I guess.. Four hundred-eigjty-two isn't a normal age for everyone." She said. And mine and Marx's jaws dropped open. "I actually respawned just yesterday and finally got back here. I lost myself in a little tussle with a bunch of skeletons and let's just say I didn't exactly shine through all victorious and such. But I'll call a rematch once I get back."

"Wow, it must be cool being able to respawn. Like no matter what happens, you will still be able to fight again." Marx said in awe.

"Ehh, not as glamorous as it sounds. It gets tiring living for so long. Ya know?" Evelyn looked at us. And we both just shook our heads slowly. "..Oh, yeah.. right. Well. At least Steve understands."

"And what about your parents?" I asked. Evelyn then spun around to face us but kept walking, backwards as if that were just as natural for her.

"And what about your parents?" She returned another question. I lowered my head, not wanting to make eye contact with her gaze. Those were the eyes that could interrogate someone easily.

"We are both orphans." Marx answered solemnly.

"Hhh, diddo. Both killed perminently by Herobrine." Evelyn then turned back around.

"Well, what have you been doing all these years?" I asked.

"Nothing much. Grandpa usually keeps me around the farm so I don't get myself into any trouble. He says I am the kind of quiet but daring, whatever that means." She rolled her eyes at the sky.

After several minutes we made it to a very small wooden house that looked like it was too small to hold even one bed. But when Evelyn opened the door she didn't even walk in. Instead she tore into the carpet right past the door, revealing a hidden trap-door. Then she opened it up and placed the torn carpet gently leaning over it so it would most likely fall back down over the hidden door to cover it up once closed.

"Steve's this way guys." Evelyn told us as she combed down and grabbed the ladder that descended into darkness.

"Are you sure there isn't another entrance?" I whimpered.

"No you big baby. It's a secret entrance for a reason. There are over twenty different exits, but only one entrance." Evelyn answered as she descended down, so her voice slowly faded. Marx was the first to follow, before me. I had to carry Buddy with one arm so he wouldn't be left outside. Slowly I followed Marx as he followed Evelyn, who hopefully wasn't just a spy trying to kill us or anything.

After a solid minute of climbing down there was strong torch light below and the little diagonal tunnel opened up into a massive space. It looked like the world above, but underground. Grass and trees, and even flowers spread across the landscape in the form of small hills and valleys. In the distance was what looked like a cluster of houses, much larger than the one hiding the secret entrance, probably two stories high and a few rooms inside. And a little gravel path stretch from those houses to the little hill we were on.

"This way. Steve is either mining or crafting. He hardly does anything else these days." Evelyn coaxed as she began walking down along the path. Me, Marx, and Buddy followed close behind. I wondered how someone could even live underground. It seemed impossible! Plants need the sun to grow, don't they?

"Actually, I think the plants just need light. Not specifficly torch light." Marx, answered my question? I just looked at him wide eyed.

"Hu, what was that little guy?" Evelyn looked over her shoulder at him.

"Didn't you hear Zannie ask about the plants?" He asked Evelyn as if he thought it were an obvious situation and that Evelyn was just deaf or something.

"Um, Marx, I didn't say anything. But I did think it." I said shyly.

     "Knew it!" Evelyn half grinned.

"You knew what?" Marx quickly turned to her.

"I could just tell, just by the look in your eyes, the posture, the ura, you're definitely a descendant of Herobrine." Evelyn smirked over her shoulder.

"Wh- how could you even tell?! I thought you said you just farmed or something." Marx looked at her wide eyed. Knowing she was an enemy to Herobrine, he knew she might plot to kill him or something.

"True. But that doesn't mean I haven't had to run away from MANY in my lifetime. This is actually the only base that has so far not been completely obliterated. It's actually one of the newest too, surprise surprise." Evelyn mumbled the last bit. Me and Marx didn't really know what to say. We were both trying to figure out what had just happened. Did he read my mind?!

After a few more silent moments the three of us arrived a the little cluster of two houses and a horse barn. On the other side of hem were a ton of fields with crops of all kinds. From potatoes to beetroots.

"Grandpa!" Evelyn shouted at the larger house to the right. There was no answer. "Huh, he must be mining then." Evelyn shrugged, then turned to where the mines bust have been.

"Wait!! Over here! Sorry, I wasn't able to answer right away!" A shout came from behind the house. Then a surprisingly young man ran out from behind it with several cracked egg shells on him, a rabbit clinging onto his feet, nibbling on his shoes, and a bat sitting on his head as if it thought itself a bird and the hair it's nest. It was certainly a sight to behold. The man looked almost exactly like you would expect Herobrine to look. Cyan shirt and a blueish purple shade of pants. But instead of glowing white eyes he had dark blue, almost purple pupils in his non glowing eyes.

"Grandpa!? What happened?!" Evelyn began cracking up laughing at the sight. The laugh feeling a little unnatural for her.

"Well, I heard the animals making a ruckus, so I went out to see what was up. Turns out they had gotten into my experimental potions." Steve explained as he wiped the egg guts off his shirt and shook the rabbit off his foot. Me and Marx laughed a little too, even though we didn't really know these people too well nor their place.

"Ahem! Anyway. This here is Marx and Zannie. They came to see you for some important reason or another." Evelyn changed he subject. Steve then looked at us as if he hadn't even noticed we were there before. He mostly looked at Marx warily but shot a serious glance at me too.

"And why is a normal citizen and descendant working together? Raised together maybe? Perhaps both orphans from the same orphanage?" Steve questioned as he examined us carefully.

"H- how do you know?!" Marx shot up in interest.

"Oh please! You live long enough and wisdom works almost as well, if not, better than reading minds. And judging by your age and looks I would say you're Andy and Ben's kid." Steve said.

"Wait really, you know my parents?! A- are they still alive?!" Marx pleaded, his eyes growing with innocence. Steve looked down with the boy and took a deep sigh.

"There is nothing I really can say about them.. Sorry." He shook his head in defeat. That just snuffed out any growing hope Marx had inside.

"Anyway! How about we finally figure out why you two came." Evelyn clasped her hands together with interest in her eyes.

Marx stepped half a step forwards to address the two, taking a moment to think about what to say first. Finally, he spoke. "There was a war.. I am not sure if you heard about it though.." By the looks on Steve and Evelyn's faces, they clearly had not. "Hundreds died.. including Crystal.." He waited a moment to let that sink in. Evelyn looked a little sad. It was clear that at most she had only seen her once or twize, maybe talked to her once, but Steve.. His was an entirely different look. It was almost impossible to guess what emotion was going on inside him, it was possibly more than one at the same time. He swayed on his feet and his eyes wandered into the blank voids of thought. Every motion was uneasy, yet he stood completely still. Scratch what I said about his emotions being almost impossible to read. They WERE impossible to read. He just stood as still as a statue in a hurricane can.

Finally, an almost impossible to hear whisper left his lips, "This is all my fault.."
