Unmasking

I looked back at my mum in shock. She seemed to not have noticed anything awry and just continued smiling at us, expecting us to introduce ourselves. I gave Jimin a look, and he seemed to have recognised Investigator Yun too.

"Hello," his unwelcoming voice dug into my mind like a blade. "Have I seen you two before?"

I was confused, but I didn't show it. Why did he say that? Did he genuinely forget about us? Or was he pretending?

"I don't know," I replied. I braved up and forced a smile. "You are my mum's friend?"

"Yes... We only met a while ago." He slowly strode towards me. He gave off a vibe that I did not like at all. It was as if he was a vulture, circling and observing his prey in the air.

"How did you meet my mum?" I asked as unsuspiciously as possible.

My mum smiled and spoke up, "Oh it's quite embarrassing. Mr Yun here is a private investigator. Basically, I was trying to find you after Bludhood ended, and Mr Yun offered to help."

I waited for my mum to continue speaking, to explain what she meant by him just 'offering to help', but it seemed she wasn't going to. I glanced at the man, and he wasn't surprised or confused when she mentioned Bludhood. That means he knew.

Investigator Yun spoke, "Miss Jung, I think the food is ready, why don't you have a look?"

"Oh of course." My mum hurried into a room which I assumed was the kitchen. Jimin and I were left alone with that dubious man.

"Now," he smiled, "why don't we have a chat? Let's get to know each other." He moved over a round dinner table by the side of the windows. I automatically held Jimin's hand, someone I found myself to be doing whenever I felt unsafe. It comforted me to know he was here, yet it scared me if this Investigator, or whoever was sending the notes, managed to find out and prove that Jimin was the Busan Killer, we might be separated forever.

Jimin knew my anxiousness, and he inconspicuously squeezed my hand in reassurance. We walked together to sit down opposite Yun.

"So what do you two do?" Yun asked.

Surely he must have known. I replied anyway, "I work in Blaze."

"Blaze? I heard that's a nice company to work for." He said.

Hearing him say that, I was becoming even more confused. Didn't he say he knew Blaze was actually just the surface company for FIRE?

He turned his head to Jimin's direction. "And you?"

"I work I Blaze too," Jimin said.

"A couple working in the same company? How cute."

"Dinner is ready!" My mum shouted from the kitchen.

Yun looked to the kitchen and said, "We should help then, shouldn't we?" He stood up and went into the kitchen. I stayed seated, unwilling to follow his condescending instruction.

He and mum came back out with bowls of rice and other side dishes. It was so creepy and unnatural to see Yun helping my mother prepare the meal.

They set out the food and we all picked up our chopsticks to start eating.

"I'm so happy to be having dinner with my daughter and her boyfriend! It's like a family dinner!" My mum made the comment as she put some food onto my bowl of rice.

Family? I subtly glanced at Yun. Don't tell me my mum has found another husband for herself already...

Yun swallowed some food and said, "I'm glad I was able to help a family reunite."

I spoke up, "So how did you know to offer my mum help anyway?"

"She just seemed like a lost woman to me, and I thought she needed help."

My mum smiled at Yun, "How kind of you!"

What the hell did that even mean? My mum 'seemed like a lost woman'? It only further added to the list of questions I had, but it didn't feel right to ask.

I needed to talk to Jimin right now, away from this man's prying ears. An idea came to me.

I pretended to reach across with my chopstick to pick up food from one of the dishes, and purposefully hit my elbow on my glass of water.

"Oh gosh!" I exclaimed as water spilled onto my lap, wetting the work skirt I was wearing. "Where's the bathroom?"

"Just that way," Yun pointed at a corridor to the side as he answered.

I looked at Jimin and it seemed he understood what I was trying to do. He stood up too and said, "I'll go help her."

I nodded and we went off to the bathroom together. As soon as he closed the door behind us, I whispered in a hushed voice, "What the hell is going on!?"

"Your mother," Jimin said, "What does she know?"

"I- I don't know how much she knows." I then remembered how Kim Namjoon didn't tell my mum information because she wasn't a proper member of Bludhood. "I don't think she's told much."

"That man, he was the person investigating the Busan Killer, wasn't he?"

I nodded. "He must know a lot... But what the fuck are they doing together?"

"He must be planning something," Jimin said.

"Then w-"

I was interrupted when the door to the bathroom was suddenly opened. The man in our discussion stood behind it.

He smiled. "You two were taking so long, I thought I would just check on you."

"Um yea, I'm fine." I grabbed some tissue in hurry and started wiping my skirt. Yun chuckled and went back away, leaving the door opened. We walked back to the dining table since we knew we couldn't talk in private anymore.

The rest of the meal was just awkward questioning from both me to Yun, and Yun to Jimin and I. That was probably the most uncomfortable meal I had ever had in my life, even more than the last few meals my parents and I had together before they officially got divorced.

When we finished eating, I wanted to leave quickly so I stood up in a hurry and linked hands with Jimin. "Thank you for the meal," I said politely, "I will be going n..."

I trailed off as I spotted something that seemed familiar. A black hat lay atop of some drawers to the side of the living room, just to the right of the door. My eyes narrowed slightly as I struggled to remember what was making me think that. Then I knew it.

It was the hat my follower wore.

My head snapped up only to be meet the gaze of Yun, who was watching me as I inspected the hat. He knew I knew.

I immediately flung the door of this apartment opened and dragged Jimin out as fast as I could, not even stopping to look back until we got in the car.

"What did you see?" Jimin asked as he kickstarted the engine.

"It was him," I blurted out while out of breath, "He was the one that sent the notes."
