Questions
I was just on my way home from work in the evening when suddenly a man in smart casual stopped me and held up an ID, "I'm from the police. Are you Miss Song Yerin?"
"Yes?" I answered, already having an idea what this was about.
"Please can you come with me to the police station, I have a couple questions for you regarding a man called Hwang Minjun."
My heart sank, but I pretended nothing was wrong. I nodded and followed him to the nearby police station. He showed me into a room with a triangular desk, a man already sitting at the desk, and another man in police uniform standing by the side.
"Please sit, Miss Song." The man at he table gestures towards the empty chair opposite him.
I did as he said and sat down, surveying the room. It was obvious that this was a sound proof room, and I saw a CCTV at the corner of the room, recording everything that went on in here.
"Hello. I'm Investigator Yun, on the case of Hwang Minjun." He introduced himself. "Don't worry, this is not an interrogation, we are only asking for your cooperation on a few questions that we have. I believe that the man, Hwang Minjun, is your boyfriend, am I right?"
I nodded.
"Are you aware of what happened to him three days ago, on the 17th of January, at around 11pm?"
"I read about it in the papers." I said simply.
"But we have witness saying that you were seen fighting with him right before the time of the incident. Can you tell me what happened?"
What do I say? "Well, yes, I did have a fight with him that night in front of where I live. He wanted to...sleep with me, but I didn't. He insisted on it so I got really scared and started running away, into the alleyways nearby. I don't know what I was thinking but I did. And I think Minjun was chasing me."
"And then?" He inquired when I paused.
Should I tell the truth? Should I tell them about Jimin? "And then.... I don't really remember much because I was really scared. I remember running and running.... And after a while I realized he wasn't chasing me anymore."
"Is that so? What did you do after that?"
"I went back home." I said as convincingly as I could. There was no CCTV in my building since it was so old so this lie shouldn't be a problem.
He nodded, "One last thing: have you noticed any of yours or his friend acting strange lately, or are there any one that might have a reason to attempt to murder Hwang Minjun?"
I shook my head. He nodded once again, "Alright, this concludes the questions. Thank you for your cooperation. Have a good rest of the day."
I stood up along with him and I gave him a little farewell bow as I left the room. Did I do the right thing by hiding the truth? No, definitely not. But did I do the thing my heart told me to do? Yes, I did. But why did I want to defend Jimin, who evidently was the 'bad guy' and had been stalking me? My first reaction should have been run to the police and report him and his claims about being the Busan Killer. But why didn't I? And why did I once again defend him?
I was deep in thoughts about my life and the recent happenings on my way home. I wasn't paying much attention the surrounding when suddenly, I was grabbed from behind and pulled into a nearby alley, with a hand over my mouth.
I kicked and fought against my unknown captor until I heard him whisper, "Stop, it's me, Jimin."
I calmed down when I recognized that it was indeed Jimin there. He pressed us into the shadow stilly, and seemed to be attentively watching for something. There were some hurried footsteps, as if a person was frantically looking for a lost thing. The footsteps became more distanced a while after, and it wasn't before it disappeared entirely that Jimin finally released his hand from my mouth and his grasp on my waist.
"What's happening?" I asked as soon as he did.
"What did you say in there?" He asked looking straight into my eyes. "Tell me everything."
"What if I said I told them about you?" I asked daringly, just to see his reaction.
"Then I would kill you." He said emotionlessly.
"Whoa, that escalated quickly." I laughed coldly, "Don't worry, I didn't tell them anything about you."
"Thought so. You still need to tell me everything they asked and everything you said. But not here." He grabbed my hand and started dragging me somewhere.
"Why not? Where're we going?"
"The police don't trust you. They have someone following you." My eyes widened. Was I not convincing enough in what I said? "Come to my house, it's safe there." He said.
"But if I go to your house now won't they find out where you live?" I asked.
"No, we lost them just now. And this is a run down part of city so there aren't CCTVs. That's why I chose to live here."
We soon arrived at his apartment. Nothing has changed much since last time I was here.
"Sit," He patted the space next to him as he sat onto his sofa, "And tell me everything that happened in there."
I went and sat next to him, and started telling him everything that the investigator asked, and what I answered.
"Not bad, playing the 'I didn't see anything' card," Jimin commented as I retold it, "But obviously you didn't convince them enough."
I was actually slightly offended by that. "Hey, at least I didn't mention anything about you. I could have just told them about you and get this whole thing over and done with. But no! I had to defend you. You could have been arrested by now if it weren't for me!"
A smirk appeared on his face, "You really think they can that easily arrest me?"
He really annoys me, "Fine, maybe not. But my point is that I tried to help you, and I don't even fucking know why I did it!"
His leaned closer to me, and stroked my cheek with his thumb, "Yerin, do you really not know why you didn't sell me out?"
The retaliation died in my throat. Did I really not know? Or was I just trying to deny the fact that I wouldn't want to see Jimin arrested?
Seeing my silence, his smirk only grew wider, "So you do know."
...yes I did know. I realized that I held nothing against Jimin even thought he claimed to be a malevolent killer, because he was really my savior. He saved me from Minjun that night, saved me from the abusive relationship, and as he said, he was trying to save me from my miserable life. And one thing I could not put off any longer: I was undeniably attracted to him.
I broke myself out of my train of thought, and said, "Stop with your annoying rhetorical questions!"
"It's only annoying because I'm right." Jimin crawled forward on the sofa, causing me to fall onto my back, with him now looming over me.
He leaned even closer, until our noses were almost touching. He quickly glanced down to my quavering lips, licked his own, and unhesitatingly closed the gap.
At first I refuse to give into him, only letting him move on his own. But as he licked and bit my lips, my logical side lost control and my lips started moving along. He pried my mouth opened and wasted no time dominating it.
As if I had lost my mind, I kissed back and my arms automatically wrapped around his neck. The kiss was fiery, as if we couldn't get enough of each other. It wasn't before we were both out of breath that we pulled apart.
As soon as I realized what I've done, I pushed him away and sat up away from him. Why did I do that? Why did I kiss back? And why... did I enjoy that?
"Ah, Yerin," Jimin scooted over to wrap his arms around my waist from behind. I was so dazed that I didn't even resist. He buried his face into my neck and whispered, "Don't resist it."
I shivered as I felt his warm breath on my exposed neck. I took hold of his hands on my stomach and pulled them away, "Jimin, I need to go home."
He held me in that position for a few moments before letting go. "You should go to the shop of that man, Seongho, for a while before going home."
"Uncle Seongho's shop? Why?" I asked.
"Because the police would have someone watching where you live." He explained, "So they'd know that you went somewhere between leaving the police station to arriving home. Go to that man's shop so he can be a witness and excuse for where you were."
I nodded and stood up from the sofa. I walked towards the door and he trailed behind me. He unlocked the door for me and opened it. But just before I could walk out he whispered in my ears, "See you soon."
I didn't even want to think about what he meant as I scuttled out and off to Uncle Seongho's shop.
