Gimmick
"Oh my god Yerin is that you?" Yunji whisper-shouted when she opened the door.
I put a finger to where my mouth was underneath my black mask to shush her and quickly stepped into her apartment, closing the door behind me.
I quickly showed her my face before pulling the mask back up. "Yunji, hi."
"Yerin!" My best friend that I haven't seen for so long stared at me with wide eyes.
I took the liberty to go and sit down on her sofa. "Aren't you going to welcome your best friend after not seeing her for so long?"
She didn't run to hug me like she used to. Instead she carefully came to sit by my side. "Are you... Are you really the Busan Killer?"
I scoffed, "Of course not."
She seemed to have been relieved by those words. "Then why would the police think you are?"
"I have no clue." I shrugged.
She hesitated, then asked, "Are you going to turn yourself in?"
I sighed, "I don't want to go to jail."
"I don't want to see you in jail for something you haven't done either," Yunji said. Suddenly she seemed to have made up her mind. "Do you have a place to hide? Do you want to hide here?"
I chuckled at how much Yunji was being herself right now; the girl who would do anything for her friends. That's why I became friends with her back in our University days. She was kind and came to talk to me when I was being a bit of a loner on the first few days.
I shook my head, "No, I have a plan. I just came here to see you... for what might be the last time." I glance at my wrist watch, "It's time."
"Wait what-"
I interrupted her by hugging her suddenly, squeezing the life out of the thin girl. I then abruptly stood up and walked back out the door. I could hear Yunji running out after me but I kept on jogging down the stairs. I bursted out of the building into the busy urban area where Yunji lived.
I slowly walked to the center of life, and took a deep breath to calm myself. I was scared, I didn't want to do this. But I had to. I then removed my mask.
Straightway, I could see people doing double-takes when they walked past me. More and more people started crowding a distance from me, some of them on their phone, presumably calling the police to see if they could get the millions won bounty. The rest had their phones pointed at me, taking picture of the most wanted criminal in the country for later showing off to friends of how close they came to me.
Not even after a few minutes, sirens blared in the background and a few police cars drove up to a distance from me. Ten or so police jumped out of the cars. Two of them urged the crowd to step back from the dangerous killer while the rest surrounded and pointed their guns at me.
"Hands up!" The police with the highest rank out of them shouted over the excited murmuring of the crowd.
I dropped the mask and slowly raised my hands to show I wasn't about to do anything rash. When the police in charge was sure that I wasn't hiding anything up my sleeve, he nodded and immediately the policewoman behind my back grabbed my arm, twisted them down, and cuffed them. She rudely pushed me against a police car, creating a loud bang of my body colliding with the metal. She started searching for any concealed weapons on me.
I drifted into thoughts as she was running a hand over me. How did my life ever come to this, being arrested on the charge of serial murder and all that. I guess it all started in that one alleyway when I first met Jimin... Or maybe that day when Minjun beat me in public, which Jimin happened to see. When I first half-willingly went with Jimin, I never thought things would turn out this way. However, true to his words, my life seemed to be way less miserable ever since he came into it, even though I was now involved all these powerful people's schemes. I did not regret falling in love with Jimin.
When the police finished checking she pulled me back up then pushed my head down to get me into the back of the vehicle. The door was slammed shut and she got into the front seat to drive.
Out of the window, I saw Yunji staring at this in shock. She looked like she was about to cry. I was whisked away to a police station and manhandled into a dark room with only one contrastingly bright table light above the wooden table in the middle. The police pushed me into the chair and left the room, closing the door behind her.
My eyes found their way to a familiar face.
"Hello, Miss Song Yerin," Investigator Yun said as he stood up, hand clasping behind his back.
"Investigator Yun," I said.
"I'm glad you remember me. Would you happen to also remember the last time we had a chat, when you lied so blatantly to my face?"
"I wasn't lying," I said, keeping my voice as calm as possible.
He huffed, "No need to put on a farce anymore, Song Yerin. You are the Busan Killer and we have evidence."
"What evidence?" I said, "Whatever you have is stupid because I'm not the Busan Killer."
"Where is Hwang Minjun?" Investigator Yun ignored my questioning and said, "Did you kill him to prevent him from talking?"
"No, I didn't kill him." That was the truth. Jimin killed him. "I don't even know where he is."
I could see his eyes roaming over my body language to see if there were any signs that I was lying. I controlled my breathing and sat naturally, careful not to fidget.
"So we are playing the long game, huh?" He suddenly slammed his hands in the wooden table between us which scared the hell out of me, and shouted, "Tell me the truth!"
"It is the truth!" I yelled back, I could feel my calm farce slipping away and I was beginning to get scared. I had never been in these situations before as I had always been a 'good citizen'.
"A rather convenient truth for you isn't it!?" He retaliated.
"I don't know what more you want me to say," I replied as I forced myself to be calm, "this is the truth."
"Why did you suddenly stop going to all your jobs after Hwang Minjun's incident happened?"
"Because I didn't need to anymore. I have a new boyfriend and he pays for my things."
He huffed. "Who is this new boyfriend?"
"His name is Jeon Jungkook."
"And where does he work?"
"He works as a manager in Blaze," I said, referring to the surface company of FIRE.
"In Blaze? Not a good person then is he." It seemed that Investigator Yun knew about Blaze's tie to the FIRE gang.
"No, I'd say he is a pretty good person." I replied with a shrug.
"What about the apartment that you were kicked out of for not paying rent?"
"I went to live with Jungkook in his apartment."
"Yes, about that apartment. The police raided it a few days ago, and they saw that your things were gone. Where are you living now?"
"We were invited to live in the Boss of Blaze, Min Yoongi's house," I said.
"Min Yoongi, the leader of FIRE? You are in with the gang as well?"
I tilted my head innocently, "FIRE? Isn't that a gang in Busan?"
"Don't pretend to be stupid with me!" Investigator Yun yelled. It seemed my act was getting under his nerve.
"No, seriously, all I know is that Jungkook did well in the company so he was invited to stay in his boss' house for a while along with me. I don't know about that...FIRE gang, whatever they do."
I could see him gritting his jaw, breathing hard to try to calm his temper. I had to hold back a smirk seeing how well I was doing with this stupid act.
"Alright, Song Yerin, let me ask you soemthing else. Why did you get arrested on purpose today?"
"Because I'm not the Busan Killer," I explained, "So I thought turning myself in would help with the investigation in the true identity of the Busan Killer."
Before he could speak, another police bursted into the room and started saying something hushly into Investiagtor Yun's ear. I could see his eyes widening as he listened and his eyes turned to glance at me in surprise.
"Arg!" He punched his own palm in frustration, and whipped his head towards me. "I'll speak to you tomorrow." And with that, he was out do the room like a gust of wind.
I finally allowed myself a small victory smile as I knew that Yoongi's plan was working.
