Thirteen: The Study Date
For the rest of the day, I couldn't stop thinking about Quigley talking about meeting up to study in the library. I was hoping that Father would be okay with me hanging out with a boy. He was a good parent, but there was a part of him that wanted to protect my sister and me at all costs. So, I was worried about that. I stood outside my father's door, preparing the words that I was going to say, and I walked into the office and stopped at his desk.
"Hey sweetie, do you need something?" he asked, looking up from one of his files. I let out a small breath of relief and opened my mouth. The words came flooding out like water from an open floodgate. "Father, I was wondering if it would be okay for me to go to the library and help someone study?" I asked. "Sure, that's totally fine. Who's the student?" Wow, I didn't expect him to say that.
"His name is Quigley Quagmire. We're going to be studying for Uncle Jacques History test," I answered, slightly twirling my left hand behind my back as my joints began to ache once again. "Oh, one of the triplets, he's a good student, average grades. Nice of you to help him out," He smiled. "Okay, well, I'm going to help him out," I said before I left the office. I walked down two hallways and came to a stop in front of the dark oak doors of the library.
When I entered the library, I immediately spotted Quigley sitting down at one of the desks, reading through a large book. I sat my stuff on the ground next to me and took a seat a few feet away from him. "Oh, hey. I was starting to think that you weren't coming," Quigley said when he finally noticed my presence. "I was talking to my father. He said it was okay," I explained as I pulled out my textbook from my bag. "So, what chapter are you having the test on?"
"Chapter Three, The Fall of the Roman Empire," he answered. First period didn't take the Chapter Three test yet, so we still had another week to study before we had to take the test. So, not only was I preparing myself for the test early, but I was also hanging out with Quigley away from his friends and siblings. Quigley pulled out a piece of paper from his folder and passed it to me. It was some of the sample questions from the test.
"Okay, first question. What year did the Roman Empire fall?" I asked. "That's easy, 1453," Quigley answered. He was right, and I had a feeling that this was going to be easy for both of us. Sure enough, fifteen questions later, we had finished reviewing the sheet. "Well then, I think you're going to do great on the test," I smiled, putting my textbook back into my bag. "This was fun. Thanks for helping me out," Quigley smiled. I let out a small chuckled as my eyes locked onto his.
"No problem, always happy to help!" I smiled. As I was about to leave the library, I felt someone grab my hand, causing me to look back at Quigley. "I forgot to tell you something," he said. He opened his folder and handed me a fancy piece of paper. It had a picture of Quigley, his siblings, and his parents, all dressed up in different costumes. "I'm having a Halloween party at my house in two weeks, and I wanted to invite you," he said as he handed me the lavender paper.
"That's so cool. I'll check with my parents to see if I can come, and I'll let you know," I smiled. "Oh, and you can show your friends the flyer so they could come to if they want," he said. I nodded before walking out that door and down the hall, staring down at the flyer and smiling as I saw Quigley wearing a nice suit like something out of The Great Gatsby.
