Ten: Watch Your Back

The next day, I woke up with the same amount of pain in my joints, but I still thought nothing of it, thinking that maybe I had been writing too much and that I should give them a break from working on the chapters that I had been working on for different stories. My father had asked me repeatedly if my joints were still aching, and I would keep telling him that I was okay. But deep inside, I was starting to have a feeling that I wasn't.

I tried to push the joint pain out of my mind for the day as I walked to first period with Klaus, who was still upset after Fiona cheated on him. Instead of him having that sweet smile, he looked so gloomy, and it looked like he was severely depressed. We all noticed it, and a part of me started to feel bad for telling him. During Geometry, Klaus didn't answer a single question Mrs. Bass called out. I looked over to Veronica, and I could see her writing a note. She glanced over at me for a second before continuing to write. When she was done, she passed it to Violet, who passed the note to me. "Ms. Denouement, are you passing a note?" Mrs. Bass asked. I looked up and saw her cold eyes locked onto mine. "No, Mrs. Bass, I was passing Violet an extra piece of paper," I lied.

Mrs. Bass slowly nodded her head and turned around, and continued writing on the board. A small breath of relief escaped my lips, and I quickly opened the note to see what Veronica had written inside.

Is Klaus okay? He seems really depressed. - Veronica

I looked up at Veronica, and I slowly nodded and passed her back the note, keeping an eye out for Mrs. Bass. Violet opened the note, and she looked over at me, then wrote something on the piece of paper and handed it back to me.

I knew something was wrong with him. He told me about Fiona, but I didn't expect him to be this upset. -Violet

We continued passing the note between the three of us, and I hoped that he didn't think we were passing notes about him. But, he kept staring down at his paper. Tears were forming in his eyes. When the bell rang, he ran out of the classroom, and I tried to follow him, but I lost him in a sea of students. I tried to push through the crowd to follow him, but people kept colliding with me from different directions, knocking me all over the place. I fell to the ground when one person bumped into me hard, scattering my papers all over the floor.

"Woah, you okay?" A familiar voice asked. I looked up to see Quigley was bent down in front of me, helping me pick up my papers. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just not used to big crowds like this," I answered, trying to stand up. I felt Quigley take my hand in his, and he lifted me off the ground, handing back my papers. My eyes met Quigley's, and I could feel my cheeks begin to turn a bright pink, but I was trying my best to hide it. "Thank you, Quigley," I smiled. He smiled at me before walking down the hall. I headed to my locker to grab my textbook for next period, but when I opened the locker door, a note flew out and landed on the ground.

What is this? I bent down to pick it up, groaning slightly as my joints in my legs began to ache as well. My eyes widened as I read the note.

Big mistake to blackmail Fiona. Now, your reputation will be tarnished by the end of the school year.

You're being watched.

So, you should watch your back.
