Sixteen: Falling Apart
A few weeks after The Quagmire's Halloween party, things between Quigley and me had been different. Every time we saw each other, we just looked down at the ground as we walked past. I started to regret playing Spin the bottle. If I hadn't joined that game, maybe Quigley and I would be able to talk to each other normally like we used to. "I should've never joined that game," I said to Veronica when we met each other in the auditorium for our daily catchup.
"I know, you've been saying that for a few days. Not to be rude or anything," Veronica said as she took a sip from her water bottle. She pulled out her homework from her backpack and started working on a chemistry sheet. "So, you never told me. How did that date with Klaus go?" I asked, breaking the awkward silence. Veronica looked up from her paper, and her cheeks started to turn a bright pink, a small smile also forming on her face.
"Um," She chuckled. I could tell by the look on her face the date went really well. But she was too overwhelmed with feelings of love for Klaus to tell me about it. "That's nice! Are you guys a thing now?" I asked, eagerly wanting to know. The small smiled turned into a grin within a few seconds, and she started nodding her head like a moving bobblehead. "Oh my god! I'm so happy for you!" I said, embracing her tightly in my arms. I had a feeling that once Klaus found out it was Veronica who gave him the letter, he would be shocked to know it was a friend instead of a random girl in school.
"He told me that he had a feeling it was me who sent the letter," She explained, still smiling. "That's adorable! I'm so happy you guys are going out! I knew you would be the cutest couple in school!" I said. "Who is Veronica going out with?" A voice asked. Veronica and I looked up to see her stepfather staring at the two of us with his arms folded in front of his chest. "Oh, um, nobody," I retraced, hoping that he didn't hear about us talking about Klaus.
"Don't lie to me. Veronica, tell me who you are going out with?" Her stepfather demanded. "It's Klaus Baudelaire," she answered softly. I had a feeling that he was going to get even angrier with her, but surprisingly he just nodded and went back into his office without another word. "Do you think he's okay with it?" I whispered. "I hope so. He's always been sensitive to the topic of dating ever since my mom and him got divorced," she sighed.
I placed an arm around her back gave her a side hug. "I'm sure he'll be okay with it. He's probably just scared that you're growing up too fast," I said. "Maybe," she whispered.
After we hung out for a little while longer, I went to my father's office to see if he was ready for us to go home. He gave me a few things to do while he finished a few files. One of the things was dropping off a box of VHS tapes in the photography room. I was confused at first, but I didn't question my father and just went to the room. The moment I opened the door, I felt a sharp pain in my hands and legs, and I let out a small groan and dropped the box of tapes onto the ground.
I was so confused. Why is this happening to me? I had been going through the pain for so many months, and now it was becoming worse. The aches in my joints felt like I was becoming numb in every part of my body. I tried to lift my hand and twist it, but the pain got worse, and I collapsed onto the ground, curled up in a little ball, trying to hold back tears. "Dusk, are you okay?" A voice asked. I looked up, and I saw Veronica was standing in the middle of the hallway.
"Veronica, what are you still doing here?" I asked, trying to stand up, but I couldn't get my feet to move. "I'm just going to the bathroom, but now I'm becoming concerned about you," she said, walking towards me and sitting down on the ground next to me. "It hurts. Everything hurts," I groaned in pain. She looked confused, and I tried to talk to her and tell her about the aches that I started having at the beginning of the school year.
"Dusk, why didn't you tell me sooner?" she asked once I had finished explaining myself. "I was scared, and I didn't want you to think of me as a burden," I sobbed. "I could never think of you as a burden. Your one of my best friends, and I care about you," She said, placing a reassuring hand on the small of my back. We sat there on that floor for a few more minutes until the pain subsided, and I was able to get up and walk around again. "You need to tell your father about this. The longer you wait to get help, the more pain you'll be in," Veronica said before she disappeared down the hall and into the girl's bathroom.
