One: The New Girl
This is where my story begins...
It was the first day of my sophomore year, and my first day as a student at Denouement High. I was homeschooled for the majority of my life, because my mother, Kit was too afraid to release me out into the real world, and she didn't like to be alone all day, so I ended up being homeschooled. When I was done with my classes, my mother would take me to Denouement High where I would help my father run small errands, like dropping off papers in classrooms, helping in the library, and other small things.
It was fun being in homeschool, but then I started to wonder what it would be like to attend Denouement High as a student. When I asked my mother at dinner one night, she was very hesitant, and it took quite a while to convince her that I was ready to venture into the unknown. But, eventually, my father and I were able to convince her to let me go to school. Besides, she had my little sister Beatrice to keep her company.
"Dusk, are you sure you don't want to wear regular clothes to school?" Father asked as I straightened out my dark green jacket. My father gave me the choice to not wear a school uniform if I didn't want to. But, I didn't want to seem like a rulebreaker to everyone so I decided to wear the green and black uniform everyone wore...
"I'll be alright father, besides I think the uniform looks cute," I answered. He walked over to the rectangular mirror in my room and smiled at me. "You look so much like your mother in that uniform," he said. He said that a lot, but in my opinion, I looked more like him, it was my sister who looked more like my mother, even though she was only two.
"Okay, say goodbye to your mom and sister and then we can go," He said after kissing my cheek. I grabbed my backpack from the small corner in my room, it was nothing special, just a black faux leather backpack with the crest of Denouement High attached to it. Mother was in the dining room feeding small spoonful's of applesauce to Beatrice. "Have a good day guys, Dusk can I talk to you for a second?" Mother asked not taking her gaze away from Beatrice.
"I'll be in the car," Father whispered. I took a seat next to Beatrice's high chair, and I started to worry that I was in trouble. "I'm not in trouble am I?" I asked. "No, I just wanted to tell you that, it's not too late to change your mind, you can stay in homeschool if you want," she answered. "It's okay Mom, I want to make some friends, go to a few parties, and go to homecoming," I said. Beatrice let out a small coo as she looked over at me and gave me that build smile that I loved so much.
"Okay, I guess I can let you go," she sighed. I gave her a big hug and we stayed that way for a little while, then I heard a honk coming from my father's car. "You should probably go, have fun at school today sweetheart," Mother smiled. I gave her and Beatrice a quick kiss on the cheek, and I ran outside and quickly got into the car.
"Let me guess, she was trying to convince you to change your mind?" he asked. "Yeah, but I told her not to worry," I smiled. We pulled out of the driveway and soon we arrived at the front of Denouement High. "Okay, so we'll head to my office, get your schedule, and you will be good to go," Father said as we got out of the car.
As we walked through the marble halls of Denouement High, I saw people whispering and staring at me, like they never knew that I was the headmaster's daughter. "Okay, I picked out some of your classes, ones that I know you would enjoy taking," Father said when we arrived in his office. He looked through one of the file drawers and pulled out a file with my name on it.
He handed me a small piece of white paper, and I saw that it was my schedule...
1st period: History with Mr. Jacques Snicket
2nd period: Geometry with Ms. Bass
3rd period: Chemistry with Mrs. Quagmire
4th period: Lunch
5th period: English II with Ms. Scheiska
6th period: Drama with Count Olaf
7th period: Creative Writing with Mrs. Anwhistle
I was surprised to see that my history teacher was my Uncle Jacques. I had no idea that he even worked at the school. "Oh, before you go, I want you to know that that the guidance counselor, Mr. Gustav, will be doing afternoon check-ins with you, so if you get called to the counselor's office, just know that you're not in any trouble," Father explained.
"Okay, I'll try to remember that I'll see you after school, father," I smiled. We hugged each other lightly, and I walked out of the office and to my locker to get ready for History class.
