Chapter 3
He looks so sure of himself as he walks. And I'd say, he has a perfectly good reason for that. After all, he knows what he's supposed to do. He knows his destiny, unlike me.
I suddenly see a pale light in the darkness of the forest, approaching Grandfather Lightning. I jump into a nearby tree, not wanting to be seen. The glow grows closer, closer, closer...
And my parents emerge from the trees, laughing as they fly. However, Mother abruptly falls back, hissing. Her glow disappears for a second, but as quickly as it left, it returned.
"Just a bit farther, darling!" Father calls out, pausing to let Mother catch up. Her eyes light up when she sees Grandfather Lighting, and she flies a bit faster.
"Ilma! Rowan!" Grandfather calls out, smiling broadly, but it fades when he sees the look in Mother's eyes.
"Did it happen again?" He asks softly, and both of my parents nod.
Father starts to murmur something, but I can't make it out. All I see is Grandfather giving an occasional nod, and Mother adding to the murmurs every now and then.
After a few minutes, however, Grandfather steps back. "Ready?" He asks, and my parents nod somewhat eagerly in reply.
Suddenly, a bright light splits the air. As Grandfather chants, Mother is lifted into the air. She looks so calm...Until she starts to scream.
I'm amazed that no one else hears it. I stay in the tree for the longest time, frozen in fear and shock. However, something in me comes to its senses, and I jump down.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" I scream, running in front of Grandfather Lighting. He stops his chanting, and the screams fade.
Father begins to walk towards me. "I suppose it's finally time for us to explain..."
Suddenly, a terrified look comes across Mother's face. "Run" she whispers, and Father begins to look equally nervous. In a flash, he unfurls his wings, picking me up and carrying me away. I try to protest, but I am too scared to speak.
As we fly, I hear Grandfather's voice. "Hold on for just a little longer, Ilma...Ilma? ILMA!"
With that, a low growl fills the air, accompanied by another scream. Mother gives one last cry of "RUN!" before the snarls cover her voice completely.
