Demons

You watched the blood drop off of the tip of your dagger -- almost mesmerized by it.

The adrenaline rush was over, seeing as how you had successfully completed your mission: killing an entire dark guild which was involved in human trafficking.

You just finished off the guildmaster in the most severe way. His arms and legs were sliced clean off, and so was his head for that matter, and there was a hole in the center of his chest from where you viciously shoved your hand through him. Thus, there was blood not only on your blade, but it coated your hand as well.

You thought it was best to give the most highest ranked member of this guild the most excruciating death.

Seemed reasonable.

"Well, that's the last of 'em." The deep voice came from your left, snapping you out of your mesmerized state. The voice belonged to none other than your partner in crime Terrell, your animal companion.

Terrell is not an exceed like Happy, Carla, Lily, etc. In fact, he's not even a cat. On the contrary, Terrell is a gray wolf. Although, he is similar to exceeds, Pantherlily in particular, in that he is quite small in casual form, but he also has a battle form.

His battle form, in terms of physique, is nearly identical to an exceed's form. The difference would be in features respective to the animal.

His casual form, however, is that of a normal gray wolf that one would find in the wild, but he is small enough so that you can carry him in your arms.

You first met Terrell when you were a child. It is thanks to your meeting with him that you discovered your magic.

Something which will be explained later.

"Good. Let's get out of here." You replied, "This place is starting to smell."

Following your words, you and Terrell left the dark guild. It was not until the next day, however, that members from Fairy Tail showed up -- tasked with defeating the dark guild and putting an end to their human trafficking. You can imagine how horrified they were to discover the scene that you left behind.

And thus, Fairy Tail was determined to figure out who could commit such an atrocity and put a stop to their, presumably evil, plans.

Five months later, your mission and Fairy Tail's mission intertwined, and you met some of them for the first time.

Needless to say, they changed your life.

"I can't believe you're getting married before me!" Evergreen pouted.

"I can." You scoffed, "You and Elfman still haven't made your relationship official even though we all know you guys have feelings for each other."

"It's complicated." She insisted.

"That's what they all say." You retorted, "Do you want to end up like Erza? Knowing you can be with him, but never addressing the elephant in the room?"

The said wizard nearly choked on the cake she was eating. "I told you it's complicated!" She grumbled.

"See?" You said, referring to the Erza and Jellal "complication."

"Complicated love aside, I can't believe you and Laxus are getting married!" Mira chimed in, just as bubbly as ever. "You two are going to have the most adorable children! I just know it!"

"Woah there!" You stopped her babbling, "Don't speak that over my life! One step at a time."

"I suppose you're right." She sighed.

You and other girls from the guild met to discuss plans for your wedding. However, it was mainly them telling you what they were planning because you had no idea what you were doing.

After spending three hours talking about the wedding, you were mentally exhausted and completely done for the day, so you decided to go home and take a well-deserved nap.

What you were not expecting was to be confronted by an old friend.

"Hello, (Y/N)."

________________________

You have been missing for twenty-four hours.

A note was left behind, addressed to Terrell. The wolf knew exactly who it was from, and he also knew that, because of who it was, you were in extreme danger.

Of course, Laxus and the other team of wizards that Makarov assembled (i.e., the Thunder Legion, Natsu, Mira, Erza, Gray, Gajeel, Lucy, and Wendy) wanted to know who abducted you and why.

At first, Terrell wouldn't say anything but "follow me." However, the closer they got to their destination, he knew that the wizards needed to know what they were getting themselves into.

Thus, and explanation was in order.

"Listen carefully because I'm not repeating myself." Terrell instructed as he kept running, "The guy who took (Y/N), his name is Matthew Kirkland. (Y/N) and I call him Matt. Anyway, we were good friends -- a team even -- back when we were assassins. We belonged to the same assassin guild. If there's one thing I know about Matt, it's that he's an angry and vengeful man. And he's angry at (Y/N) for betraying him."

"How did (Y/N) betray him?" Erza asked.

"By joining Fairy Tail."

~Flashback~

"Don't tell me you're letting these fairies persuade you." Matt said, "C'mon! We're cleaning up the world one killing at a time."

There was a brief silence as you dwelled on your thoughts about the Fairy Tail wizards that you managed to escape from earlier.

"There was this guy." You began, "He said that people slip into darkness when they have no light to guide them. All people need is that special someone who will bring them light. Then he told me I could join Fairy Tail."

"Join Fairy Tail? After everything we've been through together? Are you freakin' kidding me!?" You could hear the agitation and anger in his voice. "What is this all of a sudden? When I saw you this morning, you practically had sparkles in your eyes about your job. And now you want to throw away all your hard work and our relationship because of some unrealistic philosophy!"

"I didn't say we couldn't be friends anymore." You mumbled, "You could come t-"

"Like I'd ever join that crappy guild! (Y/N), do you hear yourself right now? You love killing just as much as I do. I can see it in your eyes when we work together. It's why we're so good together. Don't be swayed by those who don't understand us."

"But-"

"They're lying to you. How are we the bad guys -- the evil ones? We don't kill innocent people, we kill people with a track record. We kill human traffickers, slave traders, and terrorists. We kill people who commit the darkest crimes in this world because the Magic Council takes up too much of our taxpayer money by locking these criminals in prison. We save the world effort and money by outing these sickos. Those idiot fairies don't understand."

Despite hearing Matt's words, all you could think about was how that blond lightning wizard from earlier was willing to lose a hand in an attempt to stop you from killing your target, a complete stranger to him (but you successfully killed the target in the end, and Laxus not only broke his hand but damaged the nerves there).

There was something powerful about his action that has bothered you ever since. Thus, here you are discussing it with Matt (and Terrell who is quietly listening).

"Then what are they Matt? Extremists? Because one of those wizards, an innocent man, jumped right in front of my dagger, sacrificing his hand, for those 'unrealistic philosophies'."

"People believe in all kinds of things, (Y/N). So, yes, there are several extremists who will do the unthinkable to follow the logic of their ideals." Matt looked at you with a serious expression. His body was becoming noticeably untensed. "Listen, (Y/N). We've been together since the very beginning. We promised each other that we would never abandon each other like we were once abandoned. So, I'm tellin' you now, don't let complete strangers control you into making the biggest mistake of your life. You belong here as an assassin. You belong here . . . with me."

Perhaps Matt was right. No, you knew he was right. You did enjoy your killings -- every single minute of it. Maybe it was because Fairy Tail was the first group of people to challenge your way of life, that you began questioning and feeling guilty.

Matt has always been there for you, so you could never abandon him.

But you did.

Everything fell apart when you reencountered Fairy Tail about a month later. They were persistent and wouldn't give up until you changed your ways. They wanted to make sure you didn't kill this time. And while you still did complete your mission, you killed one of those wizards in the process because that same lightning wizard jumped in front of your attack.

An innocent man was on the verge of death right in front of your eyes. You vowed never to kill an innocent person -- that was your philosophy. And yet you disobeyed. You had no right to call yourself an assassin.

You fled the scene.

If only you had known about a dragon slayer's healing magic which saved the man from certain death.

Nevertheless, you were distraught over what you did. You couldn't get over the fact that you killed someone innocent who didn't deserve to die.

You had to get away.

So, you and Terrell left the assassin guild -- leaving Matt a note behind, telling him that you had to go.

You watched over Fairy Tail from afar, discovering that the lightning wizard was alive. You were relieved. And you had to repay him.

So you joined Fairy Tail.

And you were not the only one watching someone from afar.

~End of Flashback~

"That's not betrayal!" Natsu argued.

"It is when it's sudden -- when you promised to stay by someone's side but then turn around and abandon them." Terrell countered, "Think about it from Matt's perspective. (Y/N) was all he had. He wasn't interested in anyone else."

"Did this Matt, by chance, like (Y/N)?" Lucy asked, "Like, you know, have feelings for her?"

"I think so." The wolf replied, "I mean, it seemed pretty obvious to me."

"Wait, so (Y/N) and Matt were dating!?" Evergreen shrieked.

"Didn't say that." Terrell answered, "(Y/N) saw the relationship as a friendship, but Matt always wanted more. He just never directly said it."

"I'm tired of talking about this guy." Laxus grumbled, "He's the enemy. That's all I need to know, so can we move on?"

"Someone's jealous." Bickslow teased.

"Jealous! Jealous!" His dolls repeated.

"Shut up, Bickslow."

"We're here." Terrell said, coming to a stop. The wizards stopped as well, looking ahead at a cottage. "This is where (Y/N) and I use to live, and this is also where we'd hang out with Matt."

"So the time's come for a beating!" Natsu grinned, his fists ablaze. "I'm all fired up!"

To be continued in Part 2 . . .
