Chapter Twenty-four
"The humanoid...", Damian began, looking for an introduction, "they make up the majority of the preternatural on Earth."
"Yeah, but what are they?"
Barely resisting the urge to slam Tim's head in to the wall, Damian clenched his jaw, "I was getting on to that.
"The humanoid often appear exteriorly akin to humans- hence the name- but hold some form of power or enhanced skill. Humanoid beings possess the same, or higher intellectual aptitude as humans."
Adan added, "Regarding visible differences, the humanoid sometimes have different teeth and nails- mostly common with 'dark' creatures-,", he smirked at the term 'dark', "but the main differences are usually down to skin, hair and eye colour, like us.", he gestured towards himself, Raven and Damian.
Barry scratched his head, "Uh, how is Robin not human-looking?"
Bruce perked up at the mention of Damian, interested to know as much as he could about the true nature of his son.
Running a hand errantly through his hair, Damian said, "Only my eyes are inherited from my mo-the maternal side,", he corrected himself, ignoring the pang of longing on his chest, "hence, the difference lies there.
"My eye colour is not one found in humans, although there is the colour green, this shade is exclusive to the realm of Hell."
To their bemused expressions, Raven stepped in, "The stark contrast in tone from a dark jade to near chartreuse is particular to Hell. As a matter of fact, only to the northern region once ruled by your,", her eyes shot to Damian's, "ancestors. I can only account to seeing one other pair like it in my entire life."
Realising what she had confessed, Raven shut her lips tight. Damian knew who the other pair of eyes belonged to, he knew all too well, but know wasn't the time to open that Pandora's box of not-so-secrets.
Standing besides Damian's father, Clarke nodded his head encouragingly, indicating that Robin should continue where he was. Meeting Superman's gaze, which was warm with paternal affection, Damian lifted the corners of his lips in a half-smile.
Before he could resume his explanation, Donna asked, "So, just what are you?"
Realising how that question sounded, she corrected, "No-I didn't mean like that!", at this the Wondergirl received many chuckles from most of the Leaguers. "I was asking-um- if Adyn is a full demon, I'm an Amazon, Raven is half-demon, so what does that make you?"
Red faced by the end, Donna was perfectly happy to hide behind Jaime's shoulder, knowing fully well that she had botched the question.
All too aware of the inquisitive eyes on him, Damian was sure to keep an unaffected air. Never let it be said that the son of Batman would allow his discomfort to be shown.
Not wanting to acknowledge Raven's concerned aura, Damian answered, "As you know, The ancestors from my moth- maternal side,", he corrected again, "are from Hell, which would make me a half demon."
Bruce's eyes widened, shooting to the girl besides his son in shock. But Damian hadn't finished.
"Yet, due to the thousands of years on Earth, the demonic powers of the future generations decreased- not too severely for my bloodline, only for those that frequently mixed demon with human blood. Since there are only, if the records are correct, four accounts of inter-species partnerships throughout those thousands of years, my lineage is the purest of any part demon. In simpler terms, I have the same status as a half-demon, but with less power in terms of magic."
"He calls that simple?", Jon muttered under his breath, flicking a strand of dark hair from his eyes.
A few guffaws broke out, yet many of those present took a moment to debate the gravity of the situation.
Bruce had always know that there was so much more to Thalia and Ra's than was made out- so, so much more- yet to finally come to a clear cut answer was... hard.
Damian wasn't like other people his age, that much was evident from the second Batman met him: tall for a ten-year old, cocky and brash, not in the sense that he spoke before thinking (no, not in the least) everything that left his mouth was a calculated strike aimed at the weakest points in the addressee's countenance. The way Damian had acted was very much a scheme of his, impeccably designed to leave a lasting mark on whomever the mark ought to be left upon.
It was never a matter of 'Damian is arrogant and entitled' but rather that Damian knew his capabilities and had a clear view of 'mine to myself, and to you yours'. A handful at any rate.
But never prideful.
On that moment, in the middle of an awkward information-giving meeting with numerous heroes, listening to never-heard-before truths, Bruce found it in himself to reflect on the character of his son.
Damian had been commandeering, cold and harsh, but never prideful.
Of course, his haughty attitude and chilling demeanour could present such an idea, but that simple wasn't the case.
There was too much behind it to label 'hubris' and say no more. Bruce merely wished to know what. Not wished-no-needed to know.
Bruce knew everything about Robin, and much about the Heir to the Demon, but he knew little beyond character traits of Damian.
And it was killing him inside.
Emotions masked as they usually were- though not to Raven the empath, of course- Bruce regarded his son once more.
The boy had grown, about 5'10 now, it was hardly surprising considering his and... Damian's mother's height- if one were to do all the calculations, the estimation would be made that Damian would reach around 6'4 by adulthood.
An impressive stature, he would no doubt hold: he was in no way bulky, but lean and sharp.
A few years back, Damian had looked just like the ten year old Bruce, jarringly so, yet now there was a slight difference in his features, a thinning of the bridge of his nose, a higher definition of his cheekbones, eyes more piercing than upturned.
All these changes, Bruce could note in a second, as he did: it was no strenuous task for a master detective. Despite his skill, the Batman was unable to detect any... abnormality in his son, nor any conflicted feelings.
"The main threat to humans,", Damian said, "comes from the humanoid."
"They are the largest population of preternatural on this Earth- and in this realm.", Raven added.
Not at all disgruntled by her intermission, Damian cohesively continued, "Beings such as warlocks, mages, witches (the main magical practitioners) work together to protect human life."
Cue sarcastic coughs and snickers from the three demons.
"Self-righteous bastards.", Raven grumbled earning her an outraged protest from Kori.
"Raven! Do not use language that is bad- what kind of role model are you being for Jon and Donna?", she chided like a mother to the eldest sibling.
"Ha!", Damian laughed at her, earning him a slap on the arm.
Arguing in her favour Adyn tried, "But its true!"
The others beheld this scene with much amusement. Of course, being the tomatoes that they were, Jon and Donna (of for Pete's sake I'm using Jonna)- Jonna had turned bright red, leaving Clarke and Diana curiously amused. And Damian being Damian, he was poking fun at Raven- which she didn't stand for- leading to banter that left Jaime practically squealing. And somehow, Tim managed to find himself caught up in the light squabble between Damian and Raven, leaving him seconds way from a chokehold- courtesy of his adoptive brother. All of which Stephanie filmed for her own amusement to use when it was 3 am and she couldn't give a shit.
To stop the chaos that had emerged out of the blue, Wonderwoman commanded, in a manner fitting of a warrior demigoddess of legend, "Quiet."
Well said.
Damian smirked.
He would do that sometimes, just smirk evilly. It was unnerving. No one ever knew what it meant- so of course, Dick made sure to have a baton in hand, prepared for all circumstances.
"Raven, please continue.", Diana said, shooting Robin a befuddled glance out of the corner of her eye.
Being the piss-take that he was, Damian commented,"Oh yes, please do.", drawling with his lips curled.
Smiling, yet internally flipping him the bird, Raven addressed those assembled in the Hall of Justice, "As I was saying, some of the humanoid aim to *cough* protect human life from the 'dark', others frankly do not."
"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.", Dick flamboyantly proclaimed, receiving looks shouting 'just stop, please'.
Raven accepted Nightwing's mumbled apology begrudgingly(not that many could not the begrudging tone over her usual unaffectedness), "As I was saying, others do not. The primary species of humanoid preternatural that do pose a threat to humans are the Children of the Night."
"Huh? What's that?"
Before any of the three could respond to Hal (Adyn and Damian had let Raven lead for too long), J'onn spoke.
"Wait, Children of the Night?", they nodded at him, "That's odd, I read a book a while ago with that term- it was fiction. Would that make them-"
"You read fiction?", Barry asked, eyes wide, not realising that he had stopped a ground-breaking revelation half way through.
Sighing, the Martian Manhunter roller his eyes, "That is irrelevant.", turning to the three demons he finished softly, "Would that make the Children of the Night...vampires?"
Wincing at the poor, human terminology, Damian dismissed the uproar, waiting for it to quieten down before confirming with Adyn and Raven that he should take the lead on this one.
Taking another second for the others to realise that he was waiting for quiet, Damian finally answered, "Well...something along those lines."
