Chapter Seven

"Wait a second...did you say Deadly Sin?", J'onn J'onzz (Martian Manhunter) said, interrupting Adyn.

"As in, the Seven Deadly Sins?", Hal added.

The two demons present shared a look of exasperation- having faced the question all too many times.

"Yes,", Adyn replied impatiently, "the seven sins refer to the children of Trigon: myself representing Wrath and the other five being Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Greed and Sloth."

Raven continued, "And I portray the sin Pride. Although, because the concept of the Sins is an ancient one, we aren't the original vices. It is too complicated to explain briefly."

That ended the topic promptly, encouraging Adyn to resume talking.

"As you would know, Lord Trigon was defeated, leaving Hell without it's King. However, Trigon had named Raven as his successor. Meaning that she is the rightful ruler of our people."A fire burned bright in his eyes, battling against the flames in Raven's.

Those present took in the information given, many with a grain of salt and others with mouths agape, Damian in particular, was highly attentive. It was crucial for him to understand the circumstances of the occurrences, though he knew most of what was being told already. Specifically, he took note of the evident clash between Raven and Adyn.

"But I couldn't take the throne.", she pressed, as if attempting to convince her half-brother.

In a calmer tone she resumed the story he had begun, "So, I put my elder brother, Kadaar, in my place as Regent because I knew he could be trusted. Through him I could oversee the kingdom without having to leave this realm."

Adyn picked up, "The people were warned against uprisings and our Father's close followers had been dismissed as soon as they showed any signs of resistance. For a long while, there were no issues,", a glazed look reached his ruby orbs and he sighed wistfully, "the people...they just wanted the peace. They were grateful not to be under the control of a tyrant!"

The passion in his voice struck a chord in Damian's heart. Damn if he didn't know what Adyn meant. Damn if he didn't understand what Adyn was to speak of. History always repeated itself. Damn if he didn't know what was coming.

Adyn stared intently at Damian.

"Then they came. I don't know how they breached our defences but it was with inside help. They razed the inner city to the ground and broke in to the castle,", Raven inhaled sharply at his words, "and...they...they killed Kadaar." His voice broke with emotion.

Raven's head was unclear, her feelings contrasting between fury and heartbreak. And...something else. A feeling towards Damian that she couldn't stop. A terribly negative one.

Those were her people. Her responsibility.

Shakily, she asked, "W-what about the children? Kadaar's ch-children? And Adina?"

He shook his head and her heart fell from her chest. In its place, a constricting dread.

Out of her brothers, only Kadaar, Adyn and Tavor ever showed her kindness.

Kadaar was dead.

His children and wife were dead.

Her family and her people had died.

How had Adyn even sat through the last few hours without showing his anguish? How could he bare the pain? How did he not feel as much of a monster as Raven did? How did she not feel the death of her people? Her skin was too tight. Her tainted, bloodstained, filthy demon skin.

She was disgusted at herself.

As was Damian.

"Who,", Starfire's voice was soft, "Who did it?"

They followed his gaze to where it was trained on the boy with desolation in his eyes. In his emerald eyes.

"His kind."

The outbreak of questions after that statement were drowned out by Batman's commanding tone.

"What do you mean 'his kind'?"

His threatening, protective tone didn't go unmissed. Yet it wasn't Adyn, or even Raven, that answered him, it was Damian. Focusing on his father with shame reflecting in his irises, he began to speak, each sentence, a shock to those in the room. And each syllable seeming to alter their perception of him, forever.

"I...there is much you don't know, Father.", his voice grew bolder, "about the League. You may have been trained by my Grandfather, but he and Mother did not tell you everything."

Bruce's expression was unreadable, "What do you mean? The League of Assassins-"

Damian cut him off, "Grandfather kept the deepest secrets of the League away from you. Those confidentialities would have been disclosed  if you were to become his successor, however, that simply wasn't the case."

He drew a deep breath, as the others -most certainly his father- awaited further clarification on the subject. Raven understood the gravity that his next words would hold, as did Adyn. The three had full comprehension of the dealings of Damian's people and theirs: it was a necessity as they were Demonic Royalty. To understand the communications from either side was crucial. And for Damian to be revealing the true nature of the League...that would be equivalent to treason.

If it weren't for his status.

The green-eyed Robin exhaled, running a hand through his unruly black tresses, leaning against the wall, "Within the League, is a division known only to those within it. They are the descendants of the original League of Assassins. Those ancestors were not from this realm,", his gaze drifted to Raven's for a second before surveying the rest of the room's inhabitants, "they were demons of Hell."

He was met with a stunned silence, so pressed on, wishing to end the subject as soon as possible.

"Hell was not always a unified under one ruler, in one kingdom. There was once a division: two kingdoms with equal power over their lands. That of the Ad-Djinn and-"

"the Al-Ghul.", Raven and Adyn finished in unison.

As the room erupted in noise, Bruce stayed silent. Mulling over what he had just heard. It was too soon, too shocking. His teacher, had kept many secrets. The woman he once loved, had kept so many secrets. His own son had kept too many secrets. Batman wished to remove his cowl and curse to the heavens about the injustice; but he couldn't. He had to remain outwardly collected whilst he was raging fire inwardly.

And Jason...he couldn't quite understand the feeling he was experiencing. After he was resurrected by the Lazarus pit (following his fight with the Joker) he had always been...different. It wasn't merely the fact that his healing and combat abilities had increased: there was an energy within him. A pulsating energy.

Once Damian had walked through that door, it sped faster and stronger than normal; when Raven walked in, even more so; but when the other demon, Adyn, entered, for a moment he was sure a heart attack was on the way. Having spent a few hours in their company, however, the crude and fairly rude Red Hood had found that the sensation had dulled considerably.

The energy increase when Damian entered made so much sense now.

"Hold up a second,", Cyborg projected, "Can you explain a bit further? I think it's safe to say we're all a little confused."

Victor shot Batman an uneasy look (just like most of those present). Bruce Wayne was unpredictable.

Damian nodded mutely but before he could proceed, Raven had begun speaking.

"There was a great enmity between the kingdoms. Both wanted power. As usually happens in a struggle for dominance, war broke out. Both sides used all at their disposal, everything from foot soldiers and archers to mercenaries and sorcerers."

"Thousands died.", Adyn's voice was grim, "But eventually, by removing the game-changers from the other side, my fore-fathers won the battle. Hence, banishing the Royal Family and council of the Kingdom of Al-Ghul and taking the people as slaves."

"And from there?", Jon asked, intrigued.

"They were stripped of their magic and were to be sent to the remote, uninhabitable  wastelands of Hell.", Damian answered. "Alas, the draining of the magic (from the few that possessed it) was performed incorrectly, meaning that my ancestors were able to create a portal, one transporting them to the point in the layer between realms that was the weakest and the nearest to Hell- Earth, the Arabian Peninsula.

"For more than a thousand years, little contact occurred between the two people, neither of whom had forgotten the other. The Al-Ghul's land prospered and it's people expanded, the demonic blood mixing with that of humans, turning to a feared force of the Middle East. Quintessentially, a secret nation. Then the direct descendant of the original King Lazar ascended to the 'throne', assuming the role of a supreme, unquestioned leader. He had the ambitions to bring forth a society that infiltrated every aspect of the modern world, as the ruler of the people, and one with their respect, his ambitions for what would be The League of Assassins, proved fruitful."

"Ra's Al-Ghul.", Batman muttered, brows furrowed.

Diana raised a brow, "The Demon's Head?"

The three speakers dipped their heads.

"I don't get it.", Wondergirl unfolded her arms, voicing the opinions of many present, "If they've both got their own Kingdoms away from each other, why'd the demons attack?"

Adyn shook his head, "Ra's Al-Ghul had been 'on the throne' for hundreds of years- until four years ago. As soon as The League of Assassins was properly established, he made it his priority to contact the new ruler of Hell, Trigon: the only contact the two peoples had made before was the random rebel demon group, or so, trying to get a hit on the League."

"We don't know the specifics,", Raven said, "but ties were made. Albeit unsteady ones. Mostly founded on weapons dealings, marriages etcetera- the standard diplomatic exchanges. Of course, that didn't last.", bitterness seeped in to her tone.

"As the bond between the two nations began to strengthen, a large force of Hell-demons broke through the realm barriers and in to the Demon Head's territory: their numbers were well over two hundred. But they weren't ordinary people, they were warriors and mercenaries.", Adyn said.

"Grandfather had received no warning of the attack, hence, the Assassins were unsuspecting: only realising the threat as it fell upon them. Both sides battled viciously, with numerous casualties and deaths on both ends, however, after a lengthy period of time, Grandfather and his followers emerged victorious.

"The mere fact that the insignia of Lord Trigon was present on the demons' garments made plain that the ruler of Hell was behind the attack. Thus terminating the stable relationship once held by the two. Henceforth, all communication, save that of violence, threats and the occasional kidnapping, was severed...or so was the assumption.", Damian concluded.

And was met by the undiluted quiet of cogs turning.

Koriand'r finally addressed the room, "This is a most troubling history."

"Yeah."

"I'll say."

"Okay, hold up a sec, this is way too much to take in.", Barry raised a hand to his head dramatically, "So...the people that attacked you,", he gestured rapidly in Adyn's direction , "are your, ", he pointed at Raven, "people, who were rebelling. And the ones with them were your, ", he pointed his other finger at Damian, "people who are supposed to hate them because they used to be like them but aren't anymore because of war and stuff which should mean that you two hate him but you don't for some reason and...I...I don't get it!", he finished in defeat, wringing his hands.

Hal, Jon and Dick shared lost looks with the Flash.

"Well shit.", Red Hood chuckled.

Nice Jason...real nice.

So, uh, that was quite something. This was pretty much the chapter of revelations with some major detail in to the history of demons but DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT WHAT DC HAS WRITTEN ABOUT DEMONIC HISTORY, IT IS JUST ME TAKING ARTISTIC LICENSE AS AN AUTHOR. Oh, and don't worry about the whole 'kingdoms' thing, the story isn't going to be 'knights in armour', but it just makes sense as we go on in the story if Hell is more refined rather than just a wasteland of fire. IT WILL MAKE SENSE!

On a majorly happy and lovely note THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR 700+ VIEWS!!! I swear, I write this every chapter, but that's because the views keep increasing so much every freaking time I update! Genuinely thank you. Also, THANK FOR THE COMMENTS AND VOTES!!! Really, I love you all for making my day with your votes and warming my heart with your comments. It is great to know that so many people have read my work, but it is even greater to hear your feedback. And if you have any suggestions, I will try to use them (especially for fluff!!! :3)!

Thank you!!!
