The Betrayal

Betrayal. It hurts.

It was just another day in second or third grade. I was excited to go and play with my best friend, Devin. See, beforehand, I never had any friends. Until a new kid moved here, to Texas.

The teacher had us interact with one another, seeing as how she noticed I was always lonely, my nose stuck in a book.

We had gotten along really well, we both liked to play video games, we liked practically the same stuff. I hoped that maybe... Just maybe... That me and him could be friends for a long time.

But today... Today shattered that.

Recess came, and we all walked down to the playground. Running across the concrete in my white tennis shoes, it being April, the weather was nice. I had gotten to the wood chips and the playground equipment and saw Devin, talking to some boys. A smile came across my face, wanting to play cops and robbers. He turned around and saw me, the boys watching.

And that's when I saw it. A mix of anger and hurt was on his face.

What could've happened? Did they do something to cause this? He walked up to me, and shoved me. The teachers were too busy watching the kids on the field to see what he did.

"You. Why did you tell everyone that we were dating?"

My light pale blue eyes blinked. Dating? At the time, I was too young to actually date anyone. There were a few girls dating the boys, but that was it. "Devin, what're you talking about? I would never-"

"I don't wanna hear it. I thought you were the type of girl that would never spread any rumors. Sean and the others told me the whole entire rumor." At that point, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Sadness was visible on my face. What came next...

It hurt me.

"Stay away from me. Don't ever come over to my apartment EVER again. We are no longer friends." With that, he pushed me down, as we were close to the concrete. My body hit the ground, hard, my head hitting the concrete, pain searing through it. The teachers didn't notice though.

I got up, sitting on the concrete, holding my head, and began to cry. I didn't care who saw me at that point. The tears didn't stop. I heard faint laughing, as I knew it was the boys that fed my former best friend that lie.

From that day forward, he ignored me, stayed away from me, and we quickly fell apart. Whenever I tried to talk to him, he didn't even acknowledge me.

I knew from that moment on one thing:

Loneliness is my true best friend.
