10 ~ Snakes & Basilisks

Harry's POV

Hermione was chatting with Annabeth somewhere, so Ron and I walked to dinner ourselves. I saw Fred and George laughing and talking to a Slytherin girl, who I recognized as Drew.

Ron stomped over.

Drew spied him and said calmly, "Hey Weasley."

Then Ron pulled the twins away from her, "She's a Slytherin!" he hissed at them.

Drew must have heard, "Excuse me?" she crossed her arms and scowled at him, "I can't talk to them because I'm a Slytherin?"

"Yeah!" Ron shot back, "All Slytherins are evil!" he said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

She snarled, "Not all Slytherins are as bad as you think Weasley. Is Professor Snape evil? I admit he's not very friendly, but he is on our side, Harry proved it. The Slytherin House stands for the cunning and ambitious, not the evil and the cruel."

"Er...Ron, she's not that bad you know," Fred said.

"I saw you punch a third-year Gryffindor!" I said.

"And what does that prove? I've seen Hermione punch Malfoy."

"She had a good reason! He called her a Mudblood!"

"Potter," she hissed, "I had a good reason too you know. I know I get annoyed and angry easily, Leo's told me that plenty of times, but I never hurt the innocent. You think I punched that kid just because I like torturing little kids? Well you're wrong, I punched him because he was doing what you two are doing now! Accusing me of being evil just because I'm a Slytherin!"

"Back up a minute," Ron protested. "You—"

"This is why my Slytherin friends don't like you Gryffindors, you judge people so fast. You already think my friends are Death Eaters, and that Nico is somehow Voldemort's son! If a first year girl and another first year girl started talking at Diagon Alley, she would think that she's really cool huh? Then they start to be good friends. Then when one gets sorted into Slytherin, and the other gets sorted into Gryffindor, the Gryffindor automatically hates her!" the way she said it, it sounded like that Slytherin girl was her. "She didn't even come to apologize, just completely ignored me!" Yup, it was her. "One time I came up to her and asked if we could still be friends. She just glared at me and said, 'Slytherins and Gryffindors can't be friends' "

"Um...I think we should go," George said nervously, then the Weasley twins scurried away.

"But, if she was friends with you," I said, "everyone would say that you don't deserve to be friends with her, or that she don't deserve you. Slytherins and Gryffindors would hate you."

"Did you know, at first Percy and Annabeth were supposed to hate each other? Their parents have been worst enemies since forever. And two cabins at Camp Wizardry were enemies for centuries. They were always competing and arguing about who were the better fighters. It was Annabeth's and Clarisse's cabin. Then when Alice and Mark got together, both cabins hated them, then gradually they started to accept it. And most Slytherins already hate me! Like Malfoy, he keeps trying to threaten me with his father. Like his father can do anything! He doesn't have 'direct connections to Cornelius Fudge himself' anymore!"

"But my family are—"

"Blood traitors?" Drew finished for him, "Mine are too! Did you know that? I'm in the Slytherin House, so nobody suspects that my family are blood traitors, not even that Malfoy jerk."

"She must be lying..." Ron said.

"And now you're accusing me of lying! I used to live with Muggles! And Nico is not Voldemort's son, I'm sure of that. I know Leo. He doesn't lie. Unless, you know, he has a trick up his sleeve or something."

"How could you possibly know him? You guys just met at Hogwarts!"

"You really think that? We knew each other for two years in Canada!" well that explains her faint American accent.

"You have to be lying!" Ron said.

"Do you want a knuckle sandwich?" she screeched. She uncrossed her arms, and they fell to her side, her fists were clenched.

"A what?"

Before I could explain to Ron what a knuckle sandwich was, Leo came out of nowhere. Or skipped out of nowhere.

"Hey Drew! Did you finish your DADA homework?" he asked. (It's a code for "Did you prank some Slytherins?")

What? He just randomly skipped out of nowhere to ask Drew whether she finished her homework?

"Yep," she stopped scowling and held out her hand.

Leo shoved a spiral notebook and a quill into her hand. He was in a very good mood.

"What's that white spring thing?" Ron whispered to me.

"Muggle parchment."

"It looks heavy."

"That's because there's a lot of it, and you can keep them all in one small book."

"Oh."

I couldn't see what she did, but it looked like she drew four lines on it. Maybe crossing out some names?

Leo glanced at it and squealed, "Only four more to go!"

"I have something planned at seven at the Astronomy Tower, it's gonna be epic!" he dragged Drew away and kept talking and talking.

"I'm trying to do something here!" Drew screeched at him.

"You can do it later!" he said cheerfully. "Right now, you must listen."

Drew shot one more evil look at us before she turned around and followed Leo. Then she reached into Leo's back pocket and pulled a small white ball out. She tossed it behind her and it exploded at our feet. The front of us were completely covered with white powder. A lot of it shot up my nose. We tried cleaning it up magically, but the Weasley twins must have done something so that it couldn't be cleaned by magic. For some reason, only the floor cleaned up.

We hurried to the showers to clean up, trying not to be seen.

When we finally got to dinner, Hermione came up to us, "Where were you? Why do you have white stuff on your faces?"

When we finished explaining, she said, "You just accused her of lying and being evil when she didn't do anything?"

"You wouldn't have done the same thing?" Ron asked.

"I would think the same thing, but I wouldn't say it out loud. But...I guess I don't blame you, I guess we all judged Slytherins badly. Some Slytherins anyway."

I noticed that again, Nico and Thalia were completely ignoring each other. Nico had even switched places with Leo so that he wasn't facing her.

Suddenly Dumbledore stood up and walked to the podium thing. Everyone quieted down and looked at Dumbledore.

"I would like to make an announcement. Professor Snape has brought to my attention, that many of his Slytherins are being pranked. He would like to know who are responsible for the incidents." Dumbledore looked very serious, but there was a twinkle in his eyes, and a tiny smile on his lips, like he thought it was funny. "If you are responsible or have any information, please visit Professor Snape or myself."

Leo's POV

Oh man, we are so busted, this is worse than getting in trouble at Camp Half-Blood. Even if we don't turn ourselves in, Snape would still think it was us, he might use Leglimency, Connor won't always be there to poke him in the eyes. And the punishments would be even worse.

I think we should turn ourselves in. Then we get someone else to drink the Polyjuice potion, like Thalia, Percy, or Lou, to drink the Polyjuice Potion. They'll lure Malfoy out and make him do the Incendio Charm. Then someone else will set the common room on fire. Since we'll be at Snape's office at the time, he wouldn't think it was us who framed Malfoy. Yes! Good plan. I told it to Nico, the Stolls, Fred, and George.

I think we might need Drew's help for this. I'll have to ask her later, even if she didn't look very excited to see me earlier.

Dumbledore continued, "We are also going to have a dance to celebrate another year at Hogwarts. The ball will be on Sunday." (I have no idea what day it is in this story right now. I'm too lazy to check so let's just say it's Friday)

People started whispering excitedly and yelling across the room.

"There will also be a trip to Hogsmeade tomorrow."

Then there were lots of cheers and yelling.

"What's Hogsmeade?" I asked Nico.

He shrugged.

"Hey Annabeth-"

"It's a village they go to, it's like a field trip. Hogsmeade has lots of different shops."

"Oh," I said.

Nobody had left the Great Hall yet, good. This was a good time. I said, "Okay people, let's roll."

Percy, Thalia, and Lou left the Great Hall.

I went to the Slytherin table and calmly said, "Hey Drew."

"Hi," she said, then she nudged her friend Eliza Skull sitting next to her.

They both got up and we went out of the Great Hall, followed by Travis, Connor, Fred, Nico, and George.

We knocked on Snape's office. I had "accidentally" let Malfoy, Goyle, and Nott know the Gryffindor common room password, which is livergrowth. Thalia and Percy were supposed to have a fake conversation about Malfoy leaving the Gryffindor common room in front of a teacher after they set the fire and return to their normal selves.. We made sure they knew that it shouldn't be Professor Lupin, Dumbledore, Chiron (obviously), or Professor McGonagall, because they might think they're lying.

When the door creaked open, Snape sneered, "What are you doing here?"

"Um...we were the ones who pranked the Slytherins," I said. I felt like a wanted criminal turning myself in at a police station.

"I see," he sneered, "follow me," then he noticed Drew and Eliza, "what do you two need?"

"The same as them professor," Drew said.

Snape looked shocked that his own snakes would prank his other snakes. He quickly put his sneer back on, "Hm, all of you will have detention at my office at 7 o'clock for two weeks, except for the day of the dance. This is your first day, you are going to be cleaning the desks in my classroom. You two," he pointed at Drew and Eliza, "will wash the windows, no magic."

We went into the classroom. Snape sat at his desk and stared at us with his beady black eyes.

Drew and Eliza had the easy job, there were only four two-feet high windows.

I went to the desk closest to the window Eliza was cleaning. I thought that with Drew it would be more suspicious because I'm pretty sure Snape knows me and Drew are friends.

"Leo," Eliza whispered.

"Yeah?" I whispered back. The classroom was quiet, so I was sure Snape could hear us.

"You know, Malfoy was very mad about the prank you pulled on him. At dinner, he said he was going to get revenge."

"You're worried about that?"

"No! Of course not, just thought you should be warned, not like I care what happens to you."

I nodded, "Okay then."

After about 7 minutes, I sensed a fire starting somewhere upstairs. I managed not to giggle.

After that, Drew and Eliza had finished washing and left.

After another 5 minutes, Professor McGonagall came rushing in, "The Gryffindor common room has been vandalized! And a quarter of it has been burned!"

Vandalized too? Great thinking Lou :)

"What?" Snape stood and followed Professor McGonagall out the door.

Finally, after 10 minutes of madly scrubbing ink, dust, and scraping off ingredients stuck to the table, we were finished.

We ran to the dorm, yelled the password, and burst inside.

The fire was gone, but you could see burned armchairs, tables, curtains, parchment, bags, and quills. On the ceiling were the words "NICO DI ANGELO IS AN IDIOT" in black ink.

More students burst inside and gaped at the wreckage.

"Who would do such a thing?" someone asked.

"This is terrible!" someone else yelled.

"I'm not an idiot!" Nico shouted.

Connor and Travis ran to the corner, madly looked around and said, "Our prank stuff are gone!"

"Get out!" Professor McGonagall shouted, "It's dangerous to breathe in here, get out! We'll fix this!"

We reluctantly got out. Then Dumbledore came strolling up the stairs, looking grim.

After a minute, we could go back in, the writing on the ceiling was gone, everything was the same as before. I hope they think it's Malfoy!

Connor's POV

***Bedtime :D***

I lay down on my bunk staring up at the bed Travis was snoring on. For some reason, I felt like something was outside in the common room. Being a demigod I knew I should trust my senses.

I sneaked out and was about to open the door when Annabeth whispered, "Where are you going?" in that suspicious tone of hers.

"I can't sleep," I whispered back.

She shrugged and turned to the other side.

I crept down the stairs, and when the common room came into view I nearly screamed my head off.

There was a huge snake in the common room, like a meter in front of me. And like half it's body was still outside. It was the biggest snake I've ever seen. Which wasn't saying much, since I haven't really seen that many snakes, but dude, this thing is huge. It was completely black, and probably like 50 feet long and a meter wide. It's head didn't even look like a snake's, it looked more like a dragon's. And I could hear this weird drumming sound probably coming from this thing's stomach or something. I do not remember seeing this thing in my Greek Monsters textbook.

It stopped slithering in and fixed it's eyes on something. I looked, and saw Katie Gardner staring out the window, probably admiring the trees or the grass outside or something. Then I realized the drumming sound was comming from her fingers drumming the windowsill. I considered yelling at her to be quiet and draw the attention away from her, because I know a lot of monster's eyesight are bad, but this snake thing was only a meter away from her. Suddenly she stopped drumming, and her left hand crept toward her bracelet, her knife in disguise. Then her hand stopped and stayed in midair, like she couldn't move. The snake opened its mouth like it was going eat her. I charged, touched the two wings on my ring, and my sword appeared in my hands. I stabbed the snake thing hilt deep. Unfortunately, it didn't turn into dust, it reared, hissed, turned around, and retreated back out the Gryffindor common room. I managed to rip my sword out before it went out the door.

I ran to Katie, "You okay?"

When she didn't answer, I waved my hand in her face, thinking she was frozen with fear or something.

When she still didn't react, I poked her forehead, still nothing. Then I shook her, but instead of being shook around like a rag doll, she rocked back and forth on her feet. I tried to move her arm, but she felt like rock. Then I ran up the stairs screaming for help.

Annabeth burst out with her sword out before I could even get to the door.

"What?" she asked urgently.

"There was this huge snake down there like super super big then I stabbed it with my sword and it went out the door Katie's down there too but for some reason she's like hard as rock and won't move!"

She raced down the stairs. Then the door opened again, and Travis, Percy, Leo, Thalia, Frank, and Hazel came out, Travis shook me so fast everything was a blur, "What's wrong brother?"

I repeated what I said and we ran down the stairs. Some students were also coming down, and the rest of the demigods too.

Travis poked her nose, "It's like she was turned to stone by Medusa, but she still looks the same."

Harry and Hermione pushed their way to Katie.

"This is impossible, I thought I killed it!" Harry said.

"You did, the bones are still down there!" Hermione replied.

"Killed what?" Percy asked.

"The basilisk!"

"You mean those little-" Frank started, but Annabeth stomped on his foot.

"That big snake that kills people when you look at its eyes?" Annabeth asked.

"Yes!" Harry said, "It turned Hermione, Mrs. Norris, Justin, Colin, and Penelope Clearwater to stone, and it's after the Muggle-borns. But it's dead! I killed it!"

Travis backed away from her, "So she's dead?"

"Wait wait wait!" Percy said, "I'm confused here, does it turn people to stone or kill people?"

"Both," Hermione explained, "If you look at it directly, it kills you instantly, but if you look at it indirectly, like from a mirror or through a ghost, you get Petrified, which is getting turned to stone. Katie's not dead, or else she would be on the floor, she must have saw it in the reflection of the window."

"Ohh," Travis looked relieved.

"But it can't be the same one!" Harry said.

"Maybe it's another basilisk," Ginny suggested.

"It has to be," Hermione said, "but who would be crazy enough to keep a basilisk? Even Hagrid wouldn't do that."

"But she isn't even a muggle-born!" someone said.

"It can't be the same one as the one that kills muggle-borns, I guess this one's trying to kill everyone? Did anybody see the basilisk?"

I waved my hand in the air.

"Why did it leave?"

"Um..." I looked at Annabeth, wondering if I should tell the truth. She shrugged, so I said, "I stabbed it...with a sword."

She stared at me, "You stabbed the basilisk," she repeated.

"Yeah, why not?"

"You stabbed the bloody basilisk?" Ron exclaimed.

"Yes!" was it really this hard to understand?

"That's..." Hermiome hesitated, then must have decided to believe me, "brave. Where'd you get the sword?"

"Conjured it."

"Oh. Someone go get Dumbledore! And make sure you have a mirror with you!" she shouted at the crowd. A few people rushed off. "Where did you stab it?"

"The body, I think 4 meters from its head. And it wanted to eat her! It opened it's mouth but-"

"Wait, it wanted to eat her?"

"Yeah! It opened it's mouth."

"Maybe it only wanted to kill her by poisoning her with its fangs, because it's head won't fit in front of her? I don't think basilisks eat people."

Thalia and Leo came in, "Couldn't find that snake thing anywhere," Leo said.

Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall rushed in, and we repeated what we had said.

"Oh dear," Professor McGonagall said.

"We must warn the students," Dumbledore said gravely, "and nobody wander the halls alone! Nico and Annabeth, can I talk to you please?"

They nodded and went with Dumbledore.

Professor McGonagall said sternly, "Nobody comes out until it's time for breakfast!" Then she turned and closed the door.

We went back into our dormitories. A few minutes later, Nico and Annabeth came in.

"What were you guys talking about?" Percy asked.

"Dumbledore wanted to know whether it's possible that it's the same basilisk that Harry killed."

"And?" Percy asked.

"It's possible, when Thanatos went missing, the basilisk could have come back. And the Wizarding World's monsters are different from the Greek and Roman Monsters. If the same basilisk came back, Thanatos or my father wouldn't be able to take it back to...Tartarus, because they can't get too involved with the Wizarding World than they have to." Nico explained.

"It's still a monster, and most monsters hate demigods and want to eat us, so that's probably why it opened its mouth to eat Katie instead of just leaving after she was Petrified."
