Chapter 1
Annabeth's POV
Stealthily, I crept in the shadows of the obsidian-colored cave walls. Yet another quest, I thought unhappily. Chiron had sent me on a "small" quest to Chicago because apparently Grover reported that there were a few monster sightings and possibly some demigods. Plus, Grover couldn't come because he was "going to Yosemite National Park to make sure the other nymphs were okay". I sighed. Two days in hiding and exactly zero monsters in sight. What was the point of this quest anyways? Suddenly, I heard a small, but brave-sounding voice from behind me.
"Who are you?" the voice said. I whirled around. Surely I wasn't that careless to let someone follow me without even noticing. I sized up the girl in front of me. She was petite, with long blond hair and black clothes. Despite her small frame, I could tell by looking into her eyes that she would be a powerful opponent in battle.
"I'm-" I started to respond, but then stopped myself. I couldn't give away my identity. This girl could be a monster in disguise.
"Who are you?" I questioned her back. It's best to seem confident in these kinds of situations.
"I'm not answering your question until you answer mine," she retorted. Feisty, I thought to myself. I clenched my jaw.
"Fine," I said, grudgingly. "I'm Annabeth."
"I'm Tris," she replied, and reached out her arm to shake my hand. It surprised me that she would introduce herself so easily. Pushing aside my shock, I shook her hand with a firm grip.
"Annabeth. Huh. That's an interesting name. Are you from Amity?" she asked.
"What?" I said. What's Amity? I've spent all of last week studying the map of Chicago, and nowhere did it say the word, Amity, on it.
"Amity, you know, the faction for friendliness," she said like it was obvious. I thought hard, without letting Tris know that I didn't know what Amity was. A faction is like a group - maybe Amity is a gang? No, it can't be. She said Amity is the faction for friendliness. Gangs are nowhere near friendly. Then maybe Amity is a section of a city. Before I could tell Tris that I wasn't from Amity, I was interrupted by yet another unknown voice.
"Tris, are you there? You're late for lunch!" a deep, masculine voice shouted.
"Oh, that's Tobias!" Tris exclaimed, and I think there was the slightest hint of a blush creeping up her pale cheeks. "I'm here! And I found someone who I think is from Amity!"
"Amity?" the now named male asked, appearing into my sight. "What would an Amity be doing in the Dauntless compound?" I could now see that Tobias was pretty attractive., although not really my type. He was tall, with short brown hair, and was just about as muscular as Percy.
"Come on, let's talk about this later. I brought lunch for you. Let's go to my dormitory," Tris said, touching Tobias's arm lightly. That sign of affection implied that Tris and Tobias were dating, and it made my heart ache for Percy. Oh why did Chiron make me go on this quest alone?
