-Jacob Luis-
Jacob POV-
A scrawny—oh. Wait. I should probably introduce myself. Well, I'm Jacob Luis and today I was at Indego High School for the 'Demigod Shadowing' program.
It lasted two days, and you got to follow around a demigod. Very few people were chosen, and I was one of them.
So that leads us to were we are now, a scrawny Latino looking boy was walking towards me. I had one thought on my mind: this couldn't possibly be the demigod. Much less one of the savors of the world.
Yes, I know the demigod I was shadowing was one of the savors.
As I said, he was walking towards me, and now he's in front of me.
"You must be Jacob." He said.
"You are?" I asked.
"Leo Valdez, son of Hephaestus." The boy—Leo—said.
I laughed, "You couldn't possibly have saved the world."
"Your right," He said thoughtfully, "I only blew her up, sending her into eternal sleep."
"Your lying." I said.
No one else was around us, so I didn't really care what I said.
Apparently neither did he.
He lifted up his hand, and something amazing happened.
It caught on fire.
And Leo wasn't burning.
I was about ready to freak out, so I guess Leo thought it was enough and extinguished the flame.
His hand hadn't shown any signs to having been on fire not only 2 seconds ago.
"Listen," Leo said, "I don't really care if you believe me. But, I do care about what you say. You saw nothing, you heard nothing. Got it? I'm not a demigod, and your just a random teen shadowing me because you might end up going here."
"Got it." I said, with a little fear in my voice.
Leo seemed satisfied, "Good. Let's go."
Leo and I excited the empty hallway, and I followed him to his first class.
As I followed him, I studied him. He was wearing a white shirt, cargo pants, and a tool belt.
Tool belt?
Why would he need a tool belt?
Whatever, I'll figure that out later.
He had brown, curly hair, running shoes, and had grease smeared on his shirt, pants, face, hair, shoes, and—well you get the point.
He looked like he fixed a car, then decided he should probably go to school right away without cleaning up.
It was disgusting.
Despite being so small though, you could see obvious muscles, defined arms, and strong hands. You could tell he worked out. He looked like he could do a lot of damage, but was stuck in a puny body that could only get him so far.
We made it to the class in no time, and we were obviously late.
As soon as we opened the door, heads turned to us.
"Late again Leo? And who's your friend?" The teacher asked.
"He's shadowing me today, he's deciding if he'll come here next year." Leo said.
"It's awfully early to be shadowing." The teacher said suspiciously.
"He has an odd family." Leo replied, looking for a seat but only finding two in the front.
He started walking towards the seats, and I followed. He obviously did not want to sit there.
As soon as he sat down, the teacher started talking again and Leo started tinkering with things in his tool belt.
When the teacher saw Leo, she sighed.
"That's the fifth time this week Leo."
"I can't keep my hands still. You know that, so why keep bringing it up?" Leo said.
Some of the students snickered, but the teacher just glared at him.
"That's your final warning." She said after a moment.
"Get out your assignments please." She said.
I looked at Leo, but he didn't seem to have one.
When the teacher saw this, she was far from pleased. (I wonder if Leo can pull out homework from his tool belt, and have it done without doing any of the work...that would be cool)
"Were is your assignment Leo?" She asked.
This teacher obviously didn't like Leo, and she wasn't afraid to show it.
"I couldn't read it and my tutor was to busy helping her boyfriend study to help me." Leo said.
"No excuses, detention after school. And your little buddy can come to." The teacher decided.
The bell rang soon, and it was time to go.
Leo got up and sighed, "Mrs. Frayer hates me." He explained.
"I could tell." I said.
"Is that really why you didn't do your homework?" I asked.
"Ya, English is hard for me to read. Greek is easier, and my tutor—Annabeth—had to help her boyfriend study so he can catch up on last time."
"Why would he need to catch up?" I asked as we excited the classroom.
"Hera took him for a semester and put him to sleep, then we had a war, which he played a big roll in, so he had to miss even more school. Annabeth was lucky. She knows just about everything so it didn't take long for her to catch up. But with most of us being ADHD and dyslexic, it makes things harder." Leo said.
"Why are most of you ADHD and dyslexic?" I asked.
"The ADHD is our battle reflexes kicking in, so we can't sit still—I have it pretty bad—and most of us have dyslexia because our brain is hardwired for Greek—or Latin in the Romans case—not English." He said.
"Are you Greek or Roman?" I asked.
Leo rolled his eyes, "Greek, my dads Hephaestus. Now come on, I don't want to be late for Science to."
With that said, I followed Leo the the next class.
This one was a little better, the teacher seemed to like Leo more then the other one—though not by much—and she wasn't as loud.
So far, I've learned that demigods have semi-normal lives. Except for the wars, monsters, and,you know, everything that makes them a demigod.
After science, I asked a question that had been on my mind for a while.
"If your part god, why do you have to go to school? Can't the gods teach you?"
Leo rolled his eyes again, "We still have to learn. And the gods are busy. They also don't care about us that much, we're there pawns that do there dirty work. We don't see them very much anyway. Most of the time, a demigod will see there parent at most one time during there lifetime—which isn't very long—unless your Percy."
"Why does Percy get to see his parent more then others?" I asked.
"I'm pretty sure Percy saw his dad at least once every year he had a quest, which so far has been around 6 times, which is a lot more then most people can say." Leo said.
"Is Percy the most important demigod?"
"You could say that. After all he did save the world a couple times, go to the underworld a few times, and you can't forget the time he fell into Tartarus, the worst place in the underworld, and home of the monsters, for his girlfriend." Leo said sarcastically.
"Oh." I said, suddenly with a lot more respect for demigods and this Percy guy.
"Come on, it's Work Shop time." Leo said.
I followed Leo to the workshop classroom, and things were already looking better for Leo then the other classes.
The teacher was smiling, and his eyes seemed to brighten when Leo came in.
Leo had a smile on his face, and we sat down in the front row.
"As you know, this class doesn't really count much towards your overall GPA. But, that doesn't mean I don't expect your best." The teacher said, "So, with that said, we are ready to start a new project. Impress me, make something you love."
Then the teacher turned to me, as if just noticing I was here and said, "Oh you can build whatever you want today, it doesn't really matter but you have to be doing something." Then turning back to the class he said, "You may get started.
Not knowing what to do, I took a pice of graph paper that was in a pile on Leo's desk, and started sketching badly with a pencil I found on the desk.
I ended up messing up completely, and needed to fix some things.
So, I picked up an eraser that was also on the desk, but before I could do anything, I was scared to death.
"Mr. Luis did I say you could use that eraser?!" The teacher yelled, a furious look on his face.
I was shocked out of my mind, and did something stupid.
"N—no sir?"
"I gave you a chance to partake in this class, and you disrespect me! The last Jacub I had in this class was just like you!"
"Hey!" Some random student said—who I'm guessing is named Jacub.
"Be quiet Jacub! The teachers warned me about you Jacub!" He said, turning back to me. "I don't know if you know this or not, but I'm the authority here! You will not disrespect me! Go to the principals office!"
By this point, I was scared out of my mind.
What did I do?!
Why do they have erasers on the desk of we can't use them?!
"I d-don't know where it is sir..."
"To bad!" He yelled, "Now get out of my classroom!"
I shaky got out of my seat, and walked towards the door. But just before I stepped outside, he decided to say one more thing. Or rather, yell.
"And Jacub!?"
"Y-yes sir?"
In a matter of seconds, his face turned from furious to the happy person he was at the beginning of class.
"I'm joking."
I sighed in relief, but was really annoyed by his sick humor.
The class started laughing, and I walked back to my desk. I guess it would have been really funny if I wasn't the one being yelled at.
"Don't sweat it man," Leo said, "He does it to all the new kids."
The rest of the class passed by quick, and by the end all I had managed to do was draw a terrible design for a basketball hoop were as Leo had finished his project, and made a small dragon that can be changed like a rubric cube into a block.
The next 'subject' was lunch, and I was interested to see who Leo hung out with.
"Didn't you say you died earlier?" I asked, while we were walking to the cafeteria.
"Yup." He said, popping the p.
"Then how are you here?"
"Medicine." Leo said.
"Was it painful?" I asked.
"Not really, but getting punched by dozens of people really hurt. Someone hit so hard, they broke a couple fingers when I was trying to block it."
"Huh?" I asked, completely confused.
He shrugged it off, and we got in line for food.
Once we got the food, I followed Leo to a table with two kids at it. There was a girl with long black hair and blue eyes with glasses, and a guy with blue hair and brown eyes.
"Who's he?" The girl asked as we sat down. Leo was sitting across me, and next to the guy, and I was siting next to the girl.
"Jacub, he's shadowing me for two days." Leo said.
"That weird, why 2?" The guy asked.
"His parents are out of town for 2 days, and his school is out for the next day, so his parents sent him here." Leo said, lying calmly.
They didn't seem to convinced, but dropped it anyway.
"Well, I'm Jessica and this is James, nice to meet you Jacub." Jessica said.
"You to." I said.
"Guess where I'm going this summer?" Jessica asked James and Leo.
"Where?" Leo asked.
"Greece! And my parents said I can invite you two!"
"Are you serious?! I'm in!" James said.
They both looked at Leo, waiting for an answer.
"I...can't." He said.
"Why not?" Jessica asked, disappointed.
"I'm going to a summer camp." He finally said, after a pause.
"All summer?" James asked.
"Yes."
"Can't you take a little off?" Jessica asked.
He shook his head, saying no.
"Come on, summer camp or Greece? This is a once in a life time chance." James said.
"I thought you've already been." I said.
Jessica and James looked really confused, and Leo glared at me.
"Who told you that?" He asked, his eyes telling me to play along.
I shrugged and said, "I don't know, you just seem like the Greece kind of guy."
The other two once again weren't convinced, but dropped it.
"Can we face time or something?" James asked.
"I don't have a phone." Leo said.
"Is it just me or are you trying to avoid us?" Jessica said.
"It's not like that guys!" Leo said.
"How are we supposed to know? For the past 2 years we've been friends, you've disappeared every summer, you don't keep in touch, you don't let us meet your other friends or come over to your house, and the only time you talk to us is at school!" Jessica said.
"I...you wouldn't understand." Leo said.
Jessica looked mad, and James looked afraid.
"Wait...you have someone shadowing you for two days, you don't have a device, you disappear during the summer, and I think you were in Greece when you missed a lot of school." James said.
"And?" Leo asked.
"Your a demigo—" Leo quickly covered his mouth before he could finish saying it.
"Don't finish that sentence, you never know who could hear you." Leo said.
Jessica's eyes widened, "So, you are?"
"No..." Leo said.
"Then why—"
"Of course he is!" I said.
Leo glared me, and the other two looked excited.
"What were you doing in Greece?" James asked.
"I was...killing things." Leo said, "I don't really want to talk about it. Besides, it's almost time for class. Don't tell anyone about this conversation."
"We won't." They said.
"Swear it on the river Styx."
They looked amazed and said, "I swear on the river Styx I won't say anything about this conversation unless you say I can."
"Good." Leo nodded. Then, his mood changing from serous to humerus in a matter of seconds he said, "So who's ready for gym class?"
One things for sure: gym class here sucks. At my school, it's fun and we have an awesome teacher. Here...well, let's just say they do there job well.
We spent the entire time running laps and doing warmups. If you couldn't keep up, more for you! Let's just say I was only a little bit shocked when Leo kept up with the cross country runners.
When I asked him about it, he scoffed and said: "I'm a demigod. Keep up."
After gym, we changed and headed to our next class. It was boring to say the least.
But the mood shifted at the end of the day and there was a pepasembly.
"What's it about?" I asked.
"Probably something stupid." Leo said.
"Can I asked you something?" James asked, who was walking with us along with Jessica.
"Depends. I might answer, might not."
"Who's you parent?" He asked.
Leo rolled his eyes and said, "My mom died in a fire that I accidentally set thanks to a certain goddess I'm not going to mention."
We all stiffened a little bit, thinking about the few demigods that probably went through things like that.
"I hope a lot of demigods don't go through that." James said, "But you know that's not what I meant."
Leo shrugged, "One of my friends had a drunk for a mom and was given to the wolfs, another was used then died, but was later brought back, another had an abusive step father and thought his mom died when she was kidnapped by Hades, another's mom was killed by Zeus then his sister died to, another ones parent hated her so she ran away at 7, another's mom was killed in battle, need I go on? And to answer your question, he's Hephaestus."
We were all shocked into silence, and that's how it stayed until we made it to some empty seats in the gym.
"Today we will be congratulating the Basketball, Cheerleading, and Swim teams for there performance in the tournaments last weekend." The principal said.
"The Basketball team got 4th place, the Cheerleaders did wonderful in there showcase, and the Swimming team got 3rd. Now I'd like to have the coach of the swim team to come up here and say a few words."
What I'm guessing is the Swim Coach came up and took the microphone from the principals hand.
"We may not have gotten 2nd, but that's okay. And first place, well, no ones beating Goode anytime soon. I'm happy with how we did, and I can already see improvement in all of the swimmers. And so, I'd like to congratulate them all. When I call your name, please stand."
I tooned out after that. But, when he finished the names, something happened.
"Give a round of applause for the Swim—"
Suddenly, one of the windows broke and something came flying through it. And arrow landed at the feet of the Coach, and everyone looked scared out of there minds.
"Duck and cover!" One of the teachers yelled.
Leo rolled his eyes and stood up. "Relax!" He yelled, "It's just a note!"
"I hope." I heard him mumble.
He started climbing down from the bleachers, and the teachers looked to scared to stop him.
"Go back to your seat!" The principal said.
Leo ignored him and yanked the arrow from the ground. There was something tied to it, so he took it off and unfolded it.
As he read it, his hair set on fire and the whole school started freaking out.
He tucked the note and the arrow in his tool belt (How they fit, I will never know) and started running to the door, but people blocked him.
"Your hairs on fire!" Someone said.
"It is? Opps." Leo said, patting the fire out in his hair.
That just caused them to freak out envelope more.
"Shut up!" Leo yelled. "I'm just a demigod, and I've got somewhere to be! So let me go!"
The people parted, and Leo ran out of the room.
What just happened?
Suddenly, he ran back into the room.
"Jessica and James, meet me at the cafe in three days after school." He said, then ran back out.
