ch 3 : MIXED SIGNALS
Chapter 3: Mixed Signals
The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm orange glow over the quiet streets. Lily and Phil strolled side by side, their laughter still hanging in the air from a shared joke. The remnants of their ice cream dripped down their fingers as they reached the end of the block.
Phil glanced at her, a shy smile creeping across his face, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. “I’ll, uh, see you around?”
Lily smiled back, though her mind was already wandering. “Yeah, see you,” she replied softly, turning on her heel and heading down the street. As she walked, her thoughts swirled. Was this really a date? It didn’t feel like one. He’s just a friend. Right?
Lily turned the corner, her thoughts still racing, when she spotted Becca leaning casually against a lamppost, her grin wide and knowing, almost predatory. Becca had a way of making everything seem like a game.
“Well, well, well,” Becca chimed, pushing off the post with a playful glint in her eyes. “How was your date?”
Lily frowned, shaking her head. “It wasn’t a date. We just had ice cream.”
Becca raised an eyebrow, her smile unwavering. “Just ice cream? Come on, Lily. You’re seriously going with that?”
Lily rolled her eyes, trying to shrug off Becca’s teasing. “Yes, Becca. It wasn’t anything like that. He’s nice, but… I don’t think he’s into me.”
Stepping closer, Becca’s voice dropped, laced with a mischievous sincerity. “Phil told me he likes you.”
Lily’s heart stumbled, her breath catching. Phil? Liking me? She blinked, her cheeks warming as she forced herself to look away. “I… I don’t think so,” she replied, her voice quieter, tinged with uncertainty. “We barely know each other.”
Becca’s grin widened, amusement dancing in her eyes. “That’s not what he thinks. Guys don’t just ask girls for ice cream for nothing. Especially not Phil.”
Lily chewed the inside of her cheek, her steps slowing as Becca’s words sank in. Could it be true? She hadn’t even considered the possibility. He was sweet, but she had been careful not to overthink it. Was she wrong?
As Becca turned away from Lily, a cold smile spread across her face, masking her deeper intentions. She had been orchestrating this encounter, fueling Phil's interest in Lily. Memories of her own past flashed through Becca's mind—times when she felt ignored and overlooked. She had sworn to prevent Phil from experiencing the same heartache she had endured.
With a flick of her hair, Becca walked off into the evening crowd, leaving Lily standing on the sidewalk, her mind spinning with possibilities. The cool evening air did little to ease her sudden rush of thoughts. Phil likes me? Could that be why he asked me out? Her mind replayed their conversation, searching for clues she might have missed.

Phil, on the other hand, was practically buzzing as he made his way back home. A grin spread across his face, and his hands, still sticky from ice cream, barely registered. Was that a date? He chuckled, reliving their laughter in his mind.
Halfway down the street, he spotted Nick leaning casually against a lamppost, but his easy-going smile held a flicker of seriousness beneath the surface.
“Oi, Phil! How’d it go?” Nick called, straightening up.
Phil broke into a wider grin. “It was great, man! I think it might’ve turned into a date,” he laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. “We had ice cream, and… I got her number.”
Nick’s eyes lit up with genuine happiness, but a hint of concern shadowed his expression. “That’s awesome! Look at you, stepping up. Did you ask her if she’s seeing anyone?”
Phil’s grin faltered slightly. “Yeah, I did… She said it’s complicated.”
Nick’s eyebrows rose, surprise flickering across his face. “Complicated, huh? Sounds like there’s a chance for you. You should definitely go for it.”
Phil nodded, though doubt crept into his mind. “Yeah, that’s what I thought.” But before he could dwell on it, Nick’s expression shifted to something more serious.
“Look, Phil,” Nick started, his voice dropping lower, “there’s something you should know.”
Phil's heart skipped a beat, his grin fading. “What’s up?”
Nick glanced around, checking if anyone was listening, before leaning in closer. “Becca told me that Lily… well, she’s got a boyfriend.”
The words hit Phil like a bucket of cold water. Confusion rippled through him. “Wait—what? A boyfriend? But… she said it was complicated.”
Nick sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah, apparently the guy cheated on her. They broke up, but it’s messy. Becca said Lily’s still kind of hung up on him.”
Phil frowned, piecing it all together. “But… if that’s true, then why would she say it’s complicated?”
Nick shrugged, unease clear in his eyes. “According to Becca, Lily’s into you. Maybe she’s trying to move on.”
Phil’s heart lifted slightly at the idea, excitement battling confusion. “So… that’s good for me, right? I mean, if she’s into me…”
Nick forced a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Yeah, it could be good. But doesn’t it seem like it’s all happening kind of fast? I just don’t want you to get hurt, man. Becca’s been… weird about this whole thing.”
Phil paused, excitement tempered by Nick’s warning. He appreciated his friend’s concern, but the thought of Lily liking him was hard to ignore. “Nah, don’t worry about it. We’ll figure it out.”
He clapped Nick on the shoulder, though Nick’s smile remained cautious. They continued walking toward their houses, Phil’s thoughts bouncing between Lily’s shy smiles and Nick’s cautionary words.
Yet, beneath Phil’s excitement, a nagging doubt flickered. What if he was stepping into a situation that was more complicated than he realized?
As they reached their neighborhood, Nick couldn’t shake the feeling in his gut. Becca’s cryptic smile when she talked about Lily’s past stuck with him, and no matter how happy Phil seemed, something about this whole situation felt off. He just hoped Phil wouldn’t get caught in the middle of whatever mess was brewing.
Nick glanced back down the street, watching Becca as she stood with a satisfied smirk, her eyes glinting with unspoken intentions. What exactly was she up to?
