Serve Two
"Those two are idiots." You state, watching as Daichi kicks them out with a blank stare.
"It's such a shame I'm friends with them." Satoru sighs, spinning the ball in his palm.
"I know, right? Your stupidness is being sucked in by them. Such a shame, and I thought I finally found friends that you wouldn't dirty." You keep your face straight, but your lips wobble with a grin.
"Wah! You're so mean to me!" Satoru wails, throwing his arms out to welcome you in a hug. You put your foot on his cheek, using the height of the stage you sat on as an advantage and push him away.
"Go practise." You grit your jaw as your brother forces his face harder. As a result, you push too harder, now planting both feet on his face. Then the asshole decides to move. You plummet forwards, no time to stop yourself as a loud bang resonates around the gym. You land face first on the floor. The gym is silent. The ball your brother held before falls to the floor, bouncing.
"I-I didn't mean to! I thought you'd stay on stage." Your brother's face pales as he stares at your still form.
"Not (S/n)-chan! You hurt (S/n)-chan!" Tanaka wails. You slowly rise from the floor, a dark aura around you as your bangs hang over your eyes. Your face is slightly red from the fall. You pick up the volleyball, your arm swinging loosely as your brother start to walk away, your form resembling a zombie. Satoru starts to sprint. Satoru screams as he runs, his arms out in front of him. Your eyes turn to slits as you bring your arm back, your dark aura growing as you fling your arm forwards, pushing it off with your fingers. The ball travels at a fast rate across the room, a noise following it as it makes a straight line to Satoru. It hits him in the face, making his body fall to the floor as he lays on his side. Whining in pain, he cradles his head as he rolls around. You snigger evilly as a creepy grin crosses your face at his fallen form.
(A/N- Oh reader-chan, what a sadist you are.)
You brush off your little 'accident' and pop back on the stage. You bring out your phone and check some apps as you suppress a grin. The boys' sweatdrop at your quick change in attitude as Satoru continues to complain about his face. You look over the top of your phone to see the rest of the team still staring at you, so you purse your lips and look away in embarrassment.
"I didn't know you had such a good aim." Sugawara said. You blink owlishly.
So that's what he's going to pick up from that?... Really?... Okay then.
"Yeah, a lifetime from living with that moron, it becomes mandatory." You smile sheepishly, shrugging at your brothers moping form. Sugawara chuckles at your saltiness and looks over to Daichi.
"The great (S/n)-chan has shown her perfect aim to us! We are blessed!" Tanaka marvels.
"Shouldn't you be practicing?" You tell him bluntly, ignoring his shouts. "Daichi-Senpai's gonna be mad." Tanaka is gone as quick as a flash. You shake your head and sign. Who knew you'd be stuck with idiots? Although it is amusing.
"Kiyoko-San, good to see you." Tanaka rushes to the door, a large dopey smile on his face. He holds his hand out in offering. "I'll get that for you."
"Never mind." She steps in. "I'll hold it myself."
"Kiyoko-San, you're beautiful as ever today!" Tanaka compliments. Kiyoko ignores him and walks straight past. "It turns me on when she ignores me!" Tanaka shouts as he shivers, holding himself.
"Weirdo." You mutter as you shake your head in shame. Couldn't you ask for a normal Senpai? Sugawara walks over and shuts the door quickly, a head of ginger pipping up outside the door.
"(S/n)-San!" Daichi shouts. You look over to the 3rd year in interest.
"Yes, Daichi-Senpai?" You reply, sliding off the stage.
"Could you umpire for us?" He asks with a smile on his face, holding up a ball.
"3 vs 3, right?" You ask, wiping your hands on your knees. Daichi nods as he throws the ball to you. You catch it and look at the captains of the 3 on 3 game. "Suga-Senpai. Daichi-Senpai. Ready?" You question as the boys stand at your sides, their arms tight against their sides. "Go!" You throw it in the air and watch as both boys reach to catch it. Daichi catches it and lands on the ground again. "Daichi-Senpai's team starts!" You announce.
"Good job everyone!" The team shouts. You walk over to your brother, handing him a water bottle.
"Did well today, Sat." You grin mockingly.
"My team lost." He mutters.
"Well, you need to keep those balls in the air. Nishi-kun would be ashamed if he could see how bad your receives are getting." You say in a baby voice, messing up his (h/c) locks.
"Captain!" Two voices chorus from outside. You flinch, the loud noise surprising you. Sugawara, Daichi and Tanaka open the door to see the idiotic duo outside. "Let us challenge you to a match. The two of us against you senpais." Tanaka laughs, holding his stomach as he watches the two. Your lip curls forwards in confusion, squinting as you try to watch them.
"Are these guys for real?" Tanaka laughs.
"Ah, the idiots have returned." You comment in monotone.
"Hinata's here!" Your brother whisper/shouts.
"One-two... We'll prove that we can cooperate as a team." Hinata and Kageyama shout.
"I heard them say 'one-two'..." Sugawara chuckles, looking at Daichi.
"I can't say I dislike these guys." Tanaka grins, crossing his arms over his chest.
"And what if you lose?" Daichi asks, crossing his arms over his chest.
"We'll endure any penalty," Kageyama said.
"Hmm..." Daichi hums.
I'd never say endure any penalty. You're just asking for the worst.
"Then now is the time. There are three other 1st Year applicants besides you guys. It'll be a 3 on 3 match against them. We always play this game every year, just to see what the new members are made of."
"But how does it become 3 on 3?" Hinata asks.
Good for you. You can do maths.
"Who's our other team member?" He continues.
"Tanaka. I want you to be on Hinata's side." Daichi instructs the second year.
"What? Me?" Tanaka perks up.
"You don't dislike them, right?" Daichi uses his words against him.
"That doesn't mean I want to play with them." Tanaka comments. You snigger quietly with your brother.
(Yes, you both have a sad sense of humour as well as a dark side. He's a slight Yandere and you're a sadist. What a lovely pair of twins, no?)
"I see." Daichi sighs sadly, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I thought you'd be the only one here who could discipline these troublemakers."
"Oh, well! I guess it can't be helped. I'll do it!" Tanaka announces. He jumps out the gym and pats Hinata's shoulder. "Aren't you glad?
"And if you lose the match, as long as we 3rd Years are here, Kageyama will never play setter." Daichi announces. You stare at him, surprised by the penalty.
"Isn't that a bit harsh?" You ask Satoru. He nods next to you.
"But then again it's only one year." Satoru rubs his neck, thinking aloud.
"That's three hundred and sixty-five days not being in the position you want to play. Imagine not being able to be a libero, Satoru?" You reason, feeling bad for Hinata and Kageyama. Satoru shrugs.
"I wouldn't care."
"That's because our team can't win with a self-centred setter." Daichi said. "A guy who banks on his skill, but loses." Kageyama clicks his tongue. "What's the matter? I'm not ejecting you from the club. You'd be good in other positions, too, wouldn't you?" Daichi pesters.
"I'm a setter!" Kageyama shouts back, his jaw set firmly.
"Then win." Daichi has a blank expression as he stares down at Kageyama. "You're here because you think you can win by yourself, right?"
"I-I'm here too!" Hinata speaks up.
"The game will be Saturday morning." Daichi announces, ignoring Hinata. Sugawara pulls Tanaka inside the gym and closes the door on the two.
"Are we being a little too hard on those guys?" Sugawara asks.
"That's true." Tanaka agrees. "You're stricter than usual, Daichi-San."
"Do you have some special reason in mind?" Sugawara asks.
"You guys saw their match last year. Kageyama had outstanding ability as a junior-high student... But his ability hasn't yielded any results. And he's self-centred, which means he'll repeat the same mistakes as in junior high. He'll get in the way of the team for sure." Daichi explains.
Yeah, Kageyama-san was terrible in middle school. I didn't see him much in my 3rd Year, but word got around about The King of The Court thing.
"But what's different from junior high... Is that Hinata's on the same team now with Kageyama."
"Hinata? Well, he's sort of a ball of athletic reflexes, but..." Tanaka tilts his head in confusion.
"Yeah. He's far removed from his true potential, but he has rare speed and reflexes, and his jump... He didn't get the chance to play with a setter in junior high. And Kageyama is seeking for a fast spiker who can hit his tosses. These guys are imperfect on their own... But put their abilities together... If we can utilise that combination." Daichi grins happily. "Karasuno will make explosive improvement." You furrow your brow in thought, watching your senpais sceptically.
"Do you think it'll happen?" Satoru asks you.
"I've seen Kageyama on court, and I've seen Hinata move around enough to see he's fast and a decent amount of stamina. If Karasuno can utilise them like Daichi-Senpai said, it would create an amazing duo." You nod to yourself. "Daichi-Senpai is amazing for coming up with that." You nod. Satoru hums in agreement as he pulls on his jacket. You watch everyone put things away except Tanaka, who stood by the window. He clears his throat.
"Oh, yes. Morning practise is a at 7:00 am tomorrow, right?"
His acting skills are pathetic.
"Of course, but why did you ask that all of a sudden?" Sugawara asks, smiling at Tanaka.
"Oh, uh, well... Was the V. P's wig undamaged?" Tanaka asks.
"Hey, stop talking about that!" Daichi scolds, putting away the net from the volley nets. You and Satoru snigger into your hands.
"Bye you guys!" Satoru waves as he exits the gym with you. The boys wave back with their own goodbyes.
"Bye (S/n), bye (S/n)-san." Sugawara waves. You smile to him and wave back.
"What was that?" Your brother mutters, scowling at Sugawara's back.
"Huh?" You ask, making your way over to the bike stand.
"Don't play dumb, he said bye to you. People normally don't pay any mind to you when I'm there." You scowl at your brother, clicking your tongue.
"Twat." You grumble, scowling at the bike stand.
"A-ah! I didn't mean it like that! You're just normally invisible!" Satoru defends, now sweating nervously.
"Hey, Satoru!" Hinata waves as he sits down on his bike. "Where's (S/n)-chan?" He asks, tilting his head.
"Bloody lovely." You grumble, rolling your eyes, as you unlock your bike. Hinata jumps at your appearance.
"How long have you been there?!" Hinata shouts, staring at you. Your face falls into a neutral expression as you look straight at Hinata.
"The whole time." You answer blankly, staring at him indifferently.
Why do I suddenly feel like APH Canada?
You sigh. "Let's just get home. I'm cold and need anime." You state as you start to peddle away from both males.
"Race you!" Satoru shouts, peddling past Hinata with a grin.
"I wasn't ready!" Hinata shouts as he races after Satoru. You shake your head with a sigh as they whizz past you. You watch the two with the same expression, like a mother watching her children. This year surely is going to be an entertaining one.
"Why is it so cold in the morning?" You complain, rubbing your hands up and down your arms.
"Don't whine. I want to practice." Satoru comments as he walks towards the gym.
"But why did I have to come?" You whine as you scowl at his back with a pout.
I was having fun when I was reading my manga this morning, but you had to ruin it with going out in the cold.
"It'll be fun." Satoru sings and he swings open the gymnasium doors.
"It better be." You grumble.
"Ah! The enemy is here!" Hinata shouts, pointing at Satoru.
"You're too loud, dumbass!" Kageyama shouts at Hinata.
"I wanted to get in extra practise." Satoru defends, standing at the threshold of the gym, preventing you from entering.
"You're still not meant to be here." Tanaka tells him.
"Neither are you." You point out, rubbing your red nose.
Now that I think about it, why does Satoru want extra practise? He's never really cared about that before. I mean, he's practised with Nishi when the guys offered, but... eh. Maybe I'm overthinking it.
"Oh! (S/n)-chan is here!" Tanaka shouts, marvelling at you.
"When did you get here?" Hinata asks, tilting his head. You sigh bitterly.
"When Satoru got here."
"Yeah! And if my precious (F/n) is allowed to stay then so am I! We're a package deal, ya' know!" Satoru points at them.
"I suppose." Tanaka grins sheepishly. It would be nice for it not to be a sausage fest.
"I'll help set out the net." You say as you approach the supply cupboard.
"You don't need to do that." Tanaka waves his hands at you.
"I want to." You shrug, opening the door.
"(S/n)-chan is so helpful!" Tanaka marvels.
I feel like only Tanaka and Sugawara appreciate my presence recently.
You push the volleyball holder out of the cupboard, moving it out of the way, and Satoru continues to push it out onto the court. Then you pick up the net and take it to the poles that Hinata and Tanaka are currently putting protectors around. You drop the net in the middle and take one end, taking it to the left side. You tie it up and feel a pull at the other end. You look over to see Kageyama.
"Oh, thanks Kageyama-San." You smile thankfully.
Because really, these nets are so high up it drains the blood from my arms.
"The quicker this is done, the quicker we can practise," Kageyama said bluntly.
Oh, so he wasn't being nice.
You smile, but an annoyed look rests in your eyes.
"Stretched yet?" Tanaka asks the boys as you walk over to the stage.
"Osu!" The boys shout. Kageyama starts practising with Tanaka on the other side of the net and Satoru practises with Hinata on the side closest to you. He has idle chatter with Hinata as you start with homework due today.
It's not like the teachers will even notice if I don't do it. But I might as well.
"Damn, I'm off to a bad start because of that Hinata." Kageyama complains. You sweatdrop as you look over to the black-haired setter.
"That's because you said you wanted to do it all by yourself." Hinata defends, pursing his lips at the taller male.
"I'd rather do it alone than with you." Kageyama shouts.
"That's the wrong attitude--" Hinata tries to defend.
"Hey, you didn't get up early just to fight!" Tanaka shouts, pointing at the two.
"Osu."
"Idiots." You and your brother mutter as you shake your head. You place down your pen and look at the two with a disappointed look.
"Kageyama-san," you begin, "don't blame Sunshine for your stubbornness. Hinata-san, ignore Blackberry." You shout at them as they continue to bicker. They both stop and look over to you. You, of course, have gone straight back to your work with your earphones in.
"Sunshine?"
"Blackberry?" Tanaka and Satoru couldn't help but burst out laughing at Hinata's and Kageyama's bewildered expressions.
"I should give you a fair warning. Daichi-san is usually gentle, but he's extremely scary when he gets angry. I mean extremely." Tanaka's face darkens.
"We know." The duo replies blankly. Yesterday is a reminder of that.
"It won't be good if he finds out about this morning practice. It won't be good for me. It's not that I'm scared or anything. Absolutely not. Absolutely not at all." Tanaka shakes his head.
"I'm pretty sure he was scared about you staying earlier." You mutter to Satoru. He nods hesitantly as he continues to receive the ball, not letting it hit the floor. To you it appears he is playing a game of keepie-uppie. The door suddenly slides open and in walks the silver haired setter.
"Morning practise, huh? I knew it." Sugawara smiles triumphantly.
"Suga-san."
"Hi." Sugawara grins.
"But why..."
"Because you were obviously weird yesterday. You're always barely on time, but you voluntarily asked to be in charge of opening the lock." Sugawara points out as Tanaka sweats nervously. You laugh through your nose and shake your head.
This is only my second day of going to the same school as Tanaka-kun and I already knew this. Though, I knew him before. Why did Nishi-kun show off an underclassman that doesn't do volleyball, I will never know.
"This is like secret training or something. It's kind of thrilling." Now that perks your interests.
"Secret training?" You repeat lowly to yourself, grinning.
Sounds fun.
