Serve Twenty Two
"That camera is like your third arm now." Satoru rolls his eyes, popping another mint in his mouth.
"That it is." You pat your pocket were it sat securely. "I can't wait."
"Can't wait to see your brother sat on the bench?" He mutters under his breath, crossing his arms.
"Are you alright?" You question, turning to face him.
"The coach doesn't smell as bad anymore." He shuffles in his spot, sniffing. You roll your eyes as he evaded the question.
"Thats a mean thing to say about Ukai." You grin. He laughs, closing his eyes. You smile, watching as he sits comfortably between you and Hinata, his head leaning onto the back of the chair. Today is the first official match the team is playing. Today is the first time Karasuno is making a comeback, new and improved.
Well, not improved to say. Just a couple of additions. Karasuno has always been cool.
Satoru looks around, checking to see if anyone was looking over. The third years sat at the front with the adviser, the second years after that and the first years at the back. Kageyama and Hinata sat beside Satoru at the back, all four seats taken up. Satoru eyes you, biting in his lip.
"Yes?"
"Do you think we'll win?" He says quietly, raising a cautious brow. He chews his bottom lip, revealing how paranoid he truly is.
"The first match we might."
"How do you know that?" He questions quickly.
"I checked their schools website, if a team is any good, the school website will have a page dedicated to that sport to show off. They didn't have one so I'm assuming there's nothing really, y'know, no offence to them or anything, but dazzling about them." You scrunch up your face. He nods slowly, looking away before snapping back.
"Are we mentioned on the school website?" He panics again. You scowl at him, lips thinning. "...Oh."
"Sat, seriously, dumb question." You roll your eyes.
"And," his eyes flicker to the front of the bus, "the second match?" You look to you lap. Dateko. The team that basically all but killed Asahi's spirit for volleyball.
"Well... We'll see what happens when it comes to it." You hush, looking out the window. Satoru frowns, then turns towards Hinata and listens as he and Kageyama bicker. You mirror your twins expression. Now you feel crappy. But everyone knows of their iron wall, apparently impossible to break. And even if you win against Dateko, their is another team in Block A to beat. A game where you'd be torn apart if you had to choose. You phone buzzes, alerting you of a Snapchat. You quickly remove it, looking to see the name on your lock screen. You smile slightly, 'Oi Shit Face' apparently had sent you a picture. You open it up, laughing at the image and quickly screen-shot it. You send it to Gym Mum. At that, you remember to send a good luck message to Apple Pie, Vogue and the two you are currently chatting with. You get short replies almost instantly from three of them, except Oi Shit Face who seemed to be wanting to complain about their best friends grouchiness. You chuckle, spamming him back with a Bitmoji who shrugs.
The coach comes to a slow stop in the parking lot, you follow along after you brother, holding both your bags as he jumps off the coach, desperately gulping up fresh air. You chuckle, patting his back and ushering him away from the automatic doors so the others could leave too.
"Is everybody okay?" Daichi asks, looking to each player. He gets replies back, some more excited than others. You dig around in your bag, searching around as your feet bring you to Kiyoko.
"Hello, (F/n)-chan." She greets, stopping her conversation with Sugawara.
"Hi." You pull out the notebook. "I brought this for you, like you said." You hand it over to her. It was a plain black notebook with 'Karasuno' written in golden cursive.
"Thank you." She takes it gracefully.
"What's it for, (S/n)-San?" Suga raises a brow.
"Just notes." Kiyoko smiles softly, tucking it under her arm.
"Before you showed us the banner, I didn't realize you two were close." Sugawara admits.
"We are the only females on the team." You grin.
"Yes. The manager and assistant coach." He recalls, nodding.
"How have you been Suga-Senpai?"
"All the extra gym time has done me good." He chuckles, patting his bicep. You chuckle, rolling your eyes.
"I can tell."
"Let's get moving!" Ukai calls, ushering everyone away from the bus. You follow along, Satoru now chatting with Tanaka and Nishinoya. You look around, a phone in hand as you wait for it to vibrate.
"—not in the A Block." A voice catches your attention as you walk ahead.
"Let's see, this block..." you watch as a boy points at the board. Your interest peaks, quickly bringing up the camera on your phone. Taking a picture of this would be useful. You can keep track of Karasuno, Seijoh, Nekoma and the POWERHOUSE! with Vogue in it. You chuckle, flipping the camera to not see the horror of your face. "Tori... Torino?" Your lip curls up at the mispronunciation of Karasuno.
"I think that's 'Karasuno'." He turns to look at his friend. "They were strong once, not too long ago." You face falls, the word 'once' echoing.
"Oh, Yeah, but not anymore." Hearing them speak, you frown, lips bunching. "There's a saying about their team."
"What's that?"
"Fallen powerhouse." You scowl, tightening your grip on your phone. "Flightless ravens." You hear footsteps around you, so your head turns to see the team, all giving an defensive stance. His friend looks back, before his eyes widen and whispers to his friend. Tanaka moves forward, brushing past you.
"Flightless, you say?" He tilts his head forward. "Is that what you said?" The group moves again, towards the entrance, and Daichi moves forward and grabs the back of Tanaka's jacket.
"Come on. Let's go." Daichi furrows his brow before softening his face, bowing to the two and apologizing. Daichi drags him away, scolding the baldy. He lets go, moving forwards. Your lips tug down before approaching Tanaka, tugging on his sleeve. He looks down, at you, and blinks languidly.
"Thank you, Tanaka-Senpai." You smile, dropping your hand.
"N-no problem." He rubs the back of his neck. You begin walking, and he fastens his step and walks in place beside you. "How are you doing?"
"I'm doing good." You smile brightly. "Sat didn't puke and neither did Hinata. I'd say that's an improvement." He laughs.
"Yeah, I don't need to wash my shorts!" He grin, tugging at them.
"You don't wash your shorts?" You muse, raising a brow. He falters, letting the band give a sharp slap to his pelvis. He waves his hands, letting out a breathy laugh.
"Course. Of course. Smell them, they're clean." He stumbles over his words.
"I don't need to smell them." You laugh, shaking your head. "I'll take your word for it."
"(F/n)-chan!" A voice yells, arms open wide for you. You jump at the voice.
"Hello, Noya-kun." You say timidly, frightened by the shouting.
"Cute." You overhear. You tuck a stray strand of hair behind your ear, looking to the voice.
"Go say hi. I dare you." You see them, their eyes trained on... Kiyoko. You tense, eyes flickering around. Nishinoya and Tanaka's expressions darken, quickly rushing to Kiyoko's side and prancing around her, making a threatening stance. They do eight rounds of her body before she calmly lifts the notebook and clipboard and smacks the back of their heads. You giggle into your hand, stifling the laughter as the two clasp their hands in prayer.
"Assistant Coach, I need you here." Ukai calls at you, hand around his mouth whilst waving his own clipboard. You jog over, weaving in and out of the team till you're by his side.
"Yes?" You stand up straight, looking up tentatively.
"Do you remember what I told you?"
"Kiyoko is taking the plays of our team, I'm taking the plays of the opposing. With that we can try new stuff, fix up games and how to stop our team from being stopped. I'm going to remind Kageyama about not doing the freak duo and takes note of a superb coach so I know how to be just as amazing." You grin, cocking a brow at him.
"Well," Ukai crosses his arms over his chest. "Didn't know you knew how to throw a compliment."
"Yeah, right? I'll be keeping close eyes on Dateko's coach." You grin, then turn back to the team. The group approach the gymnasium doors, Hinata trotting ahead.
"This gym is huge!" He bounces, hair waving. He tilts his head back, quiet for a moment. You tilt you head at him, wondering what he is doing. "It smells like Air Salonpas..."
"It smells of pain reliving spray?" You question incredulously, eyebrows drawn together and lip turning up.
"All I smell is sweaty feet." Satoru chirps from beside you.
"No, that's just you." You eye him.
"Says the one who didn't shower last night."
"Sorry, but I don't sweat like there's no tomorrow, so I'm not rank enough to warrant a wash everyday." You let out a sharp breath. The team turns, looking to the side as another group approaches. You spot white and green, six tall members of Dateko. You shuffle back, moving behind Kageyama's taller frame. The tallest one, with bleach white hair and surprisingly no eyebrows languidly lifts his arm, a dead look on his face when he points to Azumane.
"You got a problem?" Nishinoya moves forward, hunching his back. But Asahi stops him, putting his arm out. You watch as Asahi and No-Brows have a stare down. Moments pass, the air tense. You see a male in the background perk up, rushing over in panic.
"Hey, hey, hey." He calls. "Stop that." He scolds the tall man, grabbing his arm. He looks to Daichi and Asahi and apologizes profoundly. He looks over his shoulder to a team mate who seemed not to care about the situation. "Futakuchi, help me out."
"Sure." Futakuchi closes his eyes, then apologizes unsympathetically. You let out a short laugh, amused by the situation. Dateko had a team mum and their own Tsukishima. "This guy targets our opponents Ace whenever he sees them." He explains whilst the Team Mum grunts in effort, still trying to remove the offending hand. With a struggle, they both move it down and pat his back, ushering him away form the team. Futakuchi looks back over his shoulder as No Eyebrows eyes the group. "So..." He continues, titling his head innocently. "You better be ready." Simultaneously, both their eyes fall upon you. You wanted to smile, laugh even, at how spot on you are about his personality, but their offending eyes make you shrivel back behind Kageyama, using his height and strong aura to block your own out.
"You guys are too rude!" The team mum scolds, still pushing No Eyebrows away. "Why must you always do that?" You release a chuckle at that. No Eyebrows does that every time he spots an Ace?
You look around the team, checking their facial expression to do a double take on Tanaka. He is sticking his tongue out at them. Sugawara looks to Daichi.
"That was a little jarring."
"Yeah." Daichi agrees breathlessly, still staring at the retreating backs of Dateko. Sugawara looks at Asahi, a smile on his face.
"I'm amazed that you stared back at him-" He flinches back as the life drains from Asahi, his pupils turning into pinheads. He sighs, his entire body deflating.
"Th-that was nerve-racking."
"Why are you such a wimp off the court?" Nishinoya furrows his brow.
"Are you all right?" Tanaka asks in a panic, seeing the blow knock more off his confidence.
"Hey, at least he held it until the end." You defend, smiling up at Asahi proudly.
"Yeah." Satoru nods. "That shows improvement." Asahi gives a nervous laugh, reaching up to hold the back of his head.
"Thank you..." He gives a forced smile. Your face falls, eyebrows scrunched.
"Sorry," Daichi shouts. You all look over to see a member of another team by his side. "I'll catch up with you guys in a minute." Karasuno, in unison, reply. You catch something barely and turn to see Kageyama whispering something to Hinata, the two now splitting from the group. You mentally nod in determination, remembering one of your tasks.
"Kageyama, Ukai wanted me to remind you not to do the freak toss." You tell him, approaching the two. He nods slowly, giving you a look to say 'I'm not an idiot'. "And Hinata, don't get angsty at him. You're not to do the toss unless you are close to losing the first game." You look at him. He gives a rigid nod. You give an apprehensive smile, uncomfortable with his sharp movements. "You all right there, Sunshine?"
"Yesh!" He squeaks, arms stick to his sides. You chuff, an eyebrow cocked.
"Yeah, you look like it. Do you want a mint?" You offer, popping off the cap. He shakes his head, denying. You look to Kageyama, shaking the pot at him. He blinks slowly before putting out his hand. You smile, tapping the box so one falls into his palm.
"... Thank you." He says softly before popping it in his mouth.
"Me too!" Satoru coos, putting an arm around your shoulder. You tip some into his palm and he throws them all into his mouth. You roll your eyes at him. Why couldn't he savour them?
And now he's straight up biting into them. What a savage.
Time passes, and Karasuno is settled in an alcove, Daichi finally returned to the group. Hinata is sat, body rigid as his hand's grip on his knees. Kageyama eyes him, not sure what to do.
"Hey." He gets no rise from Hinata. "Is your stomach upset again or something?"
"Tumbling with excitement!" Hinata shoots up, eyes bundling. This catches your attention, top lip curling up in confusion.
"What?" Kageyama questions, Face scrunching up in confusion.
"He said, "trembling with excitement"... I think." You move over, Sugawara, Nishinoya, Tanaka and Satoru coming over.
"No, he's just shaking with fear." Tanaka states. Nishinoya crouches down.
"I know." He informs, looking at Hinata. "You got intimidated by Dateko, didn't you?"
"O-of course not!" Hinata denies, face flushing.
"No need to be intimidated Hinata, you can do it." Satoru pats his back, grinning ear from ear.
"Focus on the first match, please." You ask, sweatdropping.
"Asahi"s cowardly too," Sugawara looks to the Ace, "but he doesn't seem nervous."
"Suga-Senpai, please don't be mean to him before a match..." you protest, shyly. Asahi looks over.
"I have a trick to calm my nerves." He gets up, looking to Hinata. "I try and remember the scariest experiences I've ever had. The scarier the better. Then I think to myself, 'whatever happens, it can never be as scary as that'. It puts me on an even keel." Hinata thinks for a second, bringing his hand to his chin.
"What's you're scariest moment?" Satoru asks, scrunching up his nose.
"Sat, don't ask him that." You scold.
"Hinata?" Sugawara asks worriedly, crouching down slightly. You turn back to see he is white. Shouyo's face does 180, a smile on his face as he closes his eyes. "Hey, Hinata." He panics. "What's the matter?" Nishinoya ignores it and looks up at Asahi.
"If you know how to calm your nerves, why did you get so devastated when we battled Dateko?" Asahi retracts at the question. Tanaka holds his hands up, face draining.
"There you go again, Noya-san! You're rubbing salt in his wound."
"Because I didn't have enough time to visualize." Asahi defends himself. "Visualizing requires time and concentration to be done properly."
"Sounds overcomplicated." Sugawara eyes him, unbelieving. You laugh, shaking your head.
"I understand what you mean, Asahi-Senpai." You attempt to comfort.
"All right," Daichi calls, getting everyone's attention. "Everybody ready? Let's be the first on the court."
"I'll be going then." You smile, nodding to Daichi.
"Watch us from above." Hinata grins, jumping in front.
"Of course." You smile back, holding your fist out. He laughs, fist bumping you before following after Daichi into the gymnasium. "Good luck!" You call out to them, waving. Kiyoko follows you up into the stands, holding the banner. You both tie it to the railing above Karasuno's court. The team watch for a moment, the two giant white feathers on the banner appearing as though they are falling.
"Thank you for the help, (F/n)-chan," Kiyoko says as she finishes off tying the knot.
"I should be saying that to you, Kiyoko-chan." You grin, stepping back. "I appreciate what you've done for this team, even when I wasn't here." She said. You hold your wrist, bashful, then you light up, grinning. "And you remember when we were talking about clubs, Yeah?"
"Yes." She smiles back, happy from your excitement.
"I know which club you were in during junior high."
"You did?" Kiyoko raises a brow, surprised.
"Yeah. You were a high jumper, so you were in the athletics club. Or something like that." You grin, tilting your head. She blinks in surprised.
"How did you know?"
"You have nice legs." You state bluntly, no altercations of a blank face before you give a smile. "And the way you move. You needed some sort of physical education background, and that's why you were recommended when you didn't have an extracurricular activity during your first year."
"How did you know I joined my first year?"
"Asahi-Senpai takes a long time to warm up to strangers, especially girls." You chuckle, eyes darting over to the team. "They seem to be getting ready. Coach will want you soon."
"Okay. Seen you soon." She smiles, beginning to walk away.
"Bye!" You smile, waving. You chuckle, eyes now scanning the team. You spot Kageyama and Hinata at the side of the court, looking up to the stands and shouting. You pull up your phone, taking a quick picture. You send it to Gym Mum. You watch as Hajime reaches into his pocket, checking his phone. He opens it and looks over in your direction. He scans the crowd, goes over you, and looks to your right. You sigh, propping an elbow on the railing and placing your chin in your palm. Raising the spare hand, you give a single wave.
Sometimes being a chameleon is exhausting, especially when you have to put physical effort into it.
