Serve Three
"-where those hot guys are!" The girls in your group squeal.
"Huh?" You stare at them in confusion. You told them about the volleyball club and they simply squeal with glee. Girls are so hard to understand.
"There's that guy with silver hair, he's so cute. And then a guy with massive muscles!" One of your friends start to drawl. You laugh nervously.
"I never realized they were so good looking." You reply awkwardly. These thoughts never crossed your mind before.
Of course Daichi-Senpai has great muscles and Suga-Senpai it very pretty. But they're my brother's friends. I can't fangirl about them.
"What club have you joined?" Yuri asks.
"Haven't really thought about it." You shrug as you start packing away your things from your previous lesson.
"I'm in the photography club! Now I can take pictures of boys with an excuse!" She grins. You laugh awkwardly. Your friend would always be on another planet. You question each and every one of their sanity and wonder why you still stay. But then again they were the only ones that would understand your shipping of dudes and your happy moments.
"They're both Third years. Daichi-Senpai has the big muscles and Suga-senpai is the other one. They're nice guys." You comment as you pick up your bag. The girls giggle childishly as Yuri watches you.
"You going to your brother?" She asks. You nod slowly. "Tell him I said hi." You nod again and walk out towards the gym. You spot Hinata, Sugawara and Satoru in the courtyard. Satoru was throwing the ball up and down, hitting it with his palms, and Sugawara was throwing the ball for Hinata to retrieve.
"Satoru!" You call with a smile, waving your hand around.
"(F/n)!" Satoru grins as he runs up to you, hastily taking his lunch box from your hands and plopping down on the grass nearby.
"Have you two had your lunches yet?" You ask, tilting your head at the boys that continue to play.
"We've eaten already!" Hinata calls as he slams his inner arms into the ball, sending it back to Sugawara.
"How long have they been at this?" You ask, sipping your straw as you watch the ball go back and forth.
"Since ten minutes ago." Satoru said blankly.
"Lunch only started fifteen minutes ago." You watch them in concern. Satoru shrugs.
"They'll be fine." And he munches on his rice, getting it everywhere. As you cringe at your brother sloppy manners. Sugawara and Hinata start to talk once Hinata drops the ball and it came rolling over to you.
"Hinata, drop your waist, and hit it like you're sending it right back in the direction it came from." Sugawara demonstrates, moving his own body.
"Yes." Hinata calls. You pick up the ball and throw it to Sugawara without a word as he thanks you, and you nod in return. Hinata became stiff when he sees you watching, so you send him a small smile. He blushes and looks away.
"Here goes." Sugawara hits it, and Hinata returns it back the way Sugawara demonstrated. "Hey Hinata, do you want me to toss for you starting today?"
"Really? You will?" Hinata asks, excited by the question as he grabs the ball.
"I'm the official setter of Karasuno, you know. You want to practice spiking, right?"
"Oh, yes. I love spiking." Hinata grins. He thrashes his arm around in the air. "It feels great when it works, and it's awesome!" Sugawara laugh.
"Sounds like you got some spiking memories." Sugawara smiles.
"Hinata's so excited." Satoru whispers to you.
"Well, he's passionate about being an ace, isn't he?" You rhetorically ask.
"I know, but he just gets me so pumped."
"Yeah, I guess he does. He could probably get me pumped up for Volleyball." You grin.
"You like to play anything as long as your decent. And that's everything." Satoru points out.
"No, I'm not. I can name lots of things I'm bad at." You pout.
"You don't play properly when I see you. What? You don't like squatting and sticking your butt out? Or is the effort too much?" Satoru looks kinda snide as he says this, and you can't decide if you should agree with him or be annoyed.
"Volleyball is just a weird game. I don't enjoy it anymore." You chew on a rice ball, watching Hinata's contagious smile.
"Like I said, I'm a setter. I'll toss for you." Sugawara reassures. Hinata 'ah's at Sugawara, instantly brightening his spirit, but then purses his lips and squints his eyes.
"But if you tossed for me... I'd kinda feel like I've lost." Hinata grumbles. Sugawara sighs before asking a question.
"Hinata, why do you insist on getting in Kageyama's face? Personally, I try to avoid confronting guys who are stronger than me."
"If a big guy picked a fight with me, would you help?" Satoru asks.
"That's what you're getting from that?" You sweat drop. "If I were there, you wouldn't have gotten into the fight in the first place."
"Yeah, you've always been good at stopping conflicts. Perhaps you could sort out Kageyama and Shouyo." Satoru smiles.
"First name bass already? Impressive." You grin.
"I'm not like you. I don't use everyone's last name and -San, and then become friends with them and move onto just the last name. It takes too long." Satoru waves his hand at you. You roll your eyes.
"It's called being polite."
"But you don't care what people call you. You're always get given the most ridiculous nicknames." Satoru said. You shrug.
"Don't really care what people call me." You catch something from the corner of your gaze, and see a silhouette by the vending machine. You lean forward and squint at the figure. You think it's Kageyama. What's he doing loitering over there?
"I don't want to lose anymore." Hinata announces.
"I see." Sugawara nods. "So, in other words, Kageyama is the best player in your grade level, as far as you know." Sugawara points out.
"Y-yes..." Hinata grips the ball.
"But wouldn't that make the best combo?" You ask out loud. Both boys look to you and you blush in embarrassment. You didn't mean to say that so loud.
"What?" Hinata asks, tilting his head.
"I-I mean, he was your most formidable opponent, so he can now be your most formidable ally." You stammer, smiling sheepishly.
"You took the words right out of my mouth, (S/n)-san." Sugawara smiles.
"Ah, sorry Suga-Senpai." You grin gingerly. Sugawara shakes his head slightly as Hinata scrunches up his face.
"Shouyo, you look constipated." Satoru points out. You giggle, slapping your brothers arm.
"Don't say that."
"Alright." Sugawara claps. "Let's do some receiving."
"Alright." Hinata nods.

"Do you need me to do anything, Daichi-senpai?" You ask as they finish stretching.
"You could become assistant manager?" He asks, a grin on his face. You shake your head.
"I can't, I'm not suited for it. I'm sure there's someone better than me that can fill that place." You admit, rubbing your arm. Daichi rubs his chin in thought.
"I would make you assistant coach, but we don't have a coach." He thinks aloud. You perk up at this.
"Karasuno doesn't?" You inquire.
"No, not since Ukai-sensei left." Daichi sighs.
"Oh... Okay." You're surprised. Then which adult is in charge of the club? They can't give that sort of responcibility to even a third year, can they?
"Are you planning on staying today, too? The other members should be coming in today."
"No, I'm just here to tell Sat some things. I'll only be a couple minutes then I'll get outta your way."
"Don't worry. You are never in the way." Daichi's honesty causes you to flush, avoiding eye contact with him.
"Thank you..."
"There's my hoe!" Satoru yells, sprinting over to you.
"(L/n)." Daichi warns, looking down at him. You both chuckle nervously. Daichi then departs and you pull out your phone, looking to Satoru.
"Mother said that you don't need to be back till six. but when you pass the story, you should get some milk. And check what's on offer." You draft a text to Satoru too so he has it written down.
"Why can't you do that? Surely if you're back first she'll get it quicker."
"Because the stuff on clearance won't be renewed until after I get home. Plus you'll get first picks." You huff. "Just make sure to get green milk. Mother is worrying over stupid stuff recently and doesn't want to get blue milk anymore." You twist your lip and send the text off.
"Yeah, yeah. Can do." Satoru pulls his bag off from his shoulder. "Take my lunchbox so I have more room in my bag." You take it from him without a word, hearing Daichi shout for everyone's attention. You widen your eyes. It's those two boys from your class. You shuffle further behind Satoru, eyeing them up. They're the first years that Daichi was talking about. Ugh.
"I'm gonna get going." You mutter.
"Check on Hinata for me?"
"Huh?"
"Go see what he's going. See if he can head back with me."
"Oh, gotcha. Will do." You send him a thumbs up before leaving. You step lightly, keeping your head down.
"See you tomorrow (L/n)-chan?" Sugawara asks. You perk up, mouth partly open. You turn to him, standing beside Daichi. But between you guys are your classmates.
"oh, erm... Sure. I don't see why not." Your eyes dart between them all. "Bye!"
"Bye!" The boys chorus back as you speedwalk to the door, sliding the metal closed. You sigh, then hit your forehead.
"Why am I running? It's not like they're scary or anything!" You huff, berating yourself. "But then again I've never even talked to either of them, and they're in my class! Be more sociable, (F/n)." You scold. "Now, if I was a blackberry and a ball of sunshine, where would I be?" You ponder, before making your way towards the football field. Surely enough, when you rounded the corner you spot Kageyama and Hinata practising.
"Hinata-San, Kageyama-San." You wave, running over to the two. Kageyama gives you a blank stare and Hinata gives you a smile.
"What are you doing here?" Kageyama asks.
"Don't speak to (S/n)-chan like that!" Hinata shouts. You laugh under your breath.
"Satoru wanted me to see when you'd be leaving. He wants to ride home with you." You direct to Hinata. The gnger thinks, furrowing his brow then looks to Kageyama.
"I'm going to practise for as long as I can!" Hinata straightens up, a determined gleams in his eyes.
"Well, he'll be leaving when the club finishes." You look down at your phone. Kageyama glances at you before hitting the ball towards Hinata.
"(S/n)-chan, don't you have a club to go to?" Hinata asks, but keeps his eye on the ball.
"No, I'm not joining one." You reply.
"You could join the volleyball club!" Hinata shouts excitedly, missing the ball.
"Concentrate!" Kageyama shouts.
"Sorry, Kageyama-San." You apologise, using your feet to kick the ball over to him. He clicks his tongue in reply, but doesn't say anything.
"Thanks for the invite Hinata, but I'm not so sure. I'd be cool, but Satoru is there. I can't follow him around forever." You admit, letting out a long breath. Kageyama tosses the ball, but Hinata sends it off in another direction. He lets out an agitated breath and stomps towards the tree.
"I said take it easy when we practise outside." Hinata shouts, climbing up the tree.
"All you have to do is receive properly." Kageyama points a stick at Hinata, then jumps and tries to knock the ball out.
"Whatever, King." Hinata grumbles.
"Hey." Kageyama glares. Hinata covers his mouth and squints his eyes.
"Shouldn't you guys be practising, not bickering?" You jut a brow. Kageyama clicks his tongue. Hinata jumps down from the tree and frowns at Kageyama. You shake your head at the two.
Will they ever get along? Perhaps... I could try making them get along. But then Satoru will give me the "I told you you could do it" and rub it in everyone's face of how cool his sister is and just make me embarrassed. Or what if I fail? I'll do what I normally do and say I wasn't trying. Yeah, then I don't look like I'm trying too hard to help. Don't want them thinking I'm some helper for them, do I?'
You look at Kageyama's retreating form and then over to Hinata, and you shake your head and laugh lightly.
"Hinata, stop with the nicknames. I can hear your thoughts from here." You joke, an amused grin on your face. Hinata waves his hands around.
"You can?! The wind-wind thing!" He panics. You try to stifle your laughter by placing your hand over your mouth, but it couldn't stop it from burst out.
"Hey, get back to practicing." Kageyama scolds. You roll your eyes, but smile nonetheless. You spot a bench nearby. It's nice out right now, and you could finish your homework. And keep on top of these two.
"I wonder what our first year opponents are like. They'll be better than playing against our Senpai's." Hinata points out.
"Who cares what they're like? There's no choice for me but to win." Kageyama points the volleyball at Hinata.
"That's what I was going to say." Hinata points back.
"Then stop bickering and get back to practicing." You comment. Kageyama clicks his tongue at you, again.
"Don't click your tongue." Hinata frowns as he gets into position. "Let's do this!" Kageyama hits the ball and it whacks Hinata in the face, knocking him backwards. You flinch at the sound. God, you could feel that resination.
"Hey, you don't receive with your face." Kageyama scowls. You turn to see Hinata still on the floor, and you lower your notebook.
"Hey!" You shout, running over to the ginger. "Are you alright? Your nose is all scuffed up." Hinata sits up on his elbows, squinting at you. You lean forward slightly, concern evident on your face. Hinata's face explodes into red as you panic.
"I-I'm fine!" He shouts.
"But your nose is messed up." You tilt your head in concern.
"If he can't service a ball to the face, then he can't ever become an Ace." Kageyama grunts. Your brow twitches in annoyance as you stand up, giving your hand to Hinata.
"You'll be fine." You sigh, then send a look to Kageyama over your shoulder and smirk. "And Kageyama-San is right, if you can't handle a ball to the face then you can never become an ace." But then you furrow a brow at Kageyama. "But it also isn't mandatory. Kageyama, you should lighten up on him. I know Tooru gave you a hard time, but that doesn't mean you should treat others like this."
"Huh?" Hinata looks between you both confused. You raise a brow at Hinata, confused about him reaction.
"She used to visit our middle school."
"You knew Kageyama before here?! I thought you only knew him from your family shop."
"No, I was friends with his teammates. So I'd visit often." You then give Kageyama the side eye. He scrunches up his face at you. "Karasuno isn't Yukigaoka. The team isn't that well hearsed in volleyball. It's not what it used to be."
"I know."
"Then cut Hinata some slack." You bite back, crossing your arms over your chest. God, you didn't ever really think much of Kageyama, but he's starting to annoy you. He's so rude to Hinata. He can't have such high expectations of everyone and then be so harsh when they don't meet up to what he wants. "I'm going home."

"Sat, hurry up." You whine. You were hungry, and he decided he'd waste your precious time and stare at Daichi.
"Yes, yes. I'm just watching Daichi." He scowls at you.
"But he's just putting away equipment!"
"Daichi has his own way of being amazing."
"Stop with your man crush! Don't you think you have enough of them already!?" You swat his head, getting agitated with him.
"I don't have lots of them!" He retorts.
"Yes, you do. Nishi, Tanaka, Suga-Senpai, Daichi-Senpai and Tooru! That's too many!"
"I'm making up for all the ones you lack." He replies bitterly, crossing his arms.
"Because I don't see the point in establishing a relationship in high school when I know it's not going to last, now hurry up. Hinata might have left by now." You push his back towards the door.
"So you like Shouyo, eh?" Satoru mutter darkly, clicking his joints in his hands.
"How did you get that from what I said?!" You ask in exasperation. "I'm leaving your butt behind. I'm hungry." You storm away, leaving him to quickly pick up his stuff. You wait at the bottom of the clubroom stairs, leaning against the side of the building. being hunry made you lose your patience quicker. Satoru forgot to pick up his lunchbox so you had to share yours. Hangry. It made you hangry that he always expected you to pick up his slack.
"(S/n)-chan, can I ask you something quickly?" You spin on your foot to see Sugawara. You approach him, grabbing the strap of your bag with a curious look. "You knew Kageyama in middle school, right?"
"Not closely, but I'd see him often. Why?" You tilt your head.
"Do you think Kageyama has mellowed out since middle school?" He asks. You think for a moment, lowering your head.
"Kageyama..." You sigh. "Well, on everyone else he seems alright with. Like, he used to get aggressive with his teammates. I've only seen him be like that with Hinata nowdays." You think it over some more. "But it seems like a different type of short-temperedness? Like, he snap at everyone. But now it seems more like hes stewing..." You wonder off. You feel bad now. You were a bit too harsh on him yesterday. But it pissed you off! He can't treat peoples like that! A sour expression takes over your face. "Why?"
"When he was in junior high, he had unwavering confidence. Like he was an unprecedented phenomenon or something. So I wanted to ask someone that knew him back then." He explains with a smile.
"Oh, okay." You blink. You look behind you to see Satoru trudging towards you, so you send your senpai's a quick salute before running.
"Hey!" Satoru shouts, running behind you. "Don't run! I'm tired!"
"Should'a thought about that when you made me wait!" You shout over your shoulder.
