Serve Thirty One

"We're going to Tokyo," Satoru repeats to himself. You look at him, and as soon as he notices Sat frowns and moves away, going to chat with Nishinoya and Tanaka. You click your tongue as you look around. The team are cooling down after their practice and are spotted around the gym. Maybe you can kill time by filling up the water bottles. You waltz over to them, grabbing the carrier and looking around. There are three of the bottles missing, so you'd just collect them. An easy peasy job that wouldn't take up too much time, but would get you out the gym sooner. Number 10, 1, and 12. You look around, spotting Hinata first with Kageyama. They are meant to be putting the net down, but instead, they're arguing about it. You approach them leisurely, pulling your lip to the side. He's being loud with Kageyama, which is no surprise, but you can't see his bottle in sight.

"Hm, Hinata?" You quirk a brow. But he continues bickering with Kageyama. You wait, looking between them.

"Idiot!" Kageyama yells, and you wince, before sighing. They're loud as always. It would probably be quicker to find Hinata's bottle yourself rather than wait for them to be finished. You head towards where Kageyama and Hinata had dumped their jackets at the side of the gym. You bend down, picking up both jackets and folding them.

Huh, not here...

You look along both sides of the gym from there, furrowing your brow. You can't see it in sight.

"(F/n), are you looking for this?" Yamaguchi startles you, your eyes widening slightly before you look down at the black bottle in your field of vision. One is extended to you, the other held tight to his chest. Why does Yamaguchi have Hinata's water?

"Oh, thank you." You pop it into the carrier. "I was gonna fill the bottles for your walk home. Do you want me to go do yours?" You tilt your head, giving him a small smile.

"It's okay, I can do it!" Yamaguchi's eyebrows shoot up. You scrunch up your nose, giving an airy laugh in confusion.

"It's no worry, I'm doing the rest of them." You hold your hand out. You see the hesitation he has, so you give an offer. "We can go out together if you want."

"Ah, you shouldn't be so shameless, Hypo." Tsukshima smiles at you. You click your tongue. He's been on your tail for a while now, but at least with Tsukishima he's trying to get a reaction. Satoru is just being a prick.

"Try to hold back your jealousy, Moon. It's unbecoming of you." You roll your eyes dramatically, acting annoyed, but both your classmates can clearly see the grin on your face.

"That's a long word, are you sure you know what it means?" Tsukishima scrunches his face at you. "People with little brains like you shouldn't wear themselves down so quickly with strenuous activities like big words." You chuckle at that, snatching Yamaguchi's bottle from him as you roll your eyes again.

"Gucci, Imma get Daichi's bottle. You can wait by the door."

"But I can go--" His words die out on his tongue as you trot away quickly "--with you."

"Somethings wrong with her." Tsukishima comments. Yamaguchi looks up at him, wondering if Tsukishima was trying to harass you to see if you were still in earshot. But instead, he's surprised to see Tsukki watching you through squinted eyes. Yamaguchi blinks at that.

"That's just like you to notice, Tsukki." Yamaguchi joins him in his viewing. You have a quick conversation with Daichi, appearing impassive before thanking him for the bottle with a smile for good measure before jogging over to them both. Tsukishima thought it was weird. You still act reserved with the team. Satoru used to talk about you non-stop at the beginning, but now he's boiled down to snarky comments - and not Tsukishima's kind. It's more so jabs at you, especially nearby their upperclassmen. He observed the rest of the team. Ennoshita chats with you some times, and from what he knew you went to the same middle school as Nishinoya so he assumed you were good with him. Hinata never stopped pestering you and Kageyama is relaxed around you. The first term was close to ending and it still took you this long to be this comfortable. You were a pain.

"You two chill to follow?" You question, now cradling the carrier.

"What makes you think I'm helping you do chores?" Tsukishima questions. You stick your nose up at him.

"I just assumed as you like tailing Gucci so often, you'd find some way to weasel along." Your comment ticks Tsukki off, but he quickly turns his head away.

"I'll meet you in the clubroom." Tsukki struts past and leaves the gym. You snigger at that, before smiling at Yamaguchi.

"How's your day been, Gucci?" You readjust your hold on the bottles before heading out for the sinks.

"Well going to Tokyo is a surprise."

"Sure is."

"And so were you." Yamaguchi comments, before becoming flustered. "Earlier, with those notebooks. I can't believe you have been keeping track of everything." He chuckles nervously, rubbing his neck.

"Kiyoko helped me, I couldn't have done it without her." You add, reiterating yourself from before. "And it's to show you your progress and reflect on past matches. Basically, it's just to make you aware."

"But there's so much in them. It's impressive! I wish I had that much focus." Yamaguchi compliments you and is self-deprecating in one breath.

"They did take a while, but I didn't have much else to do." You shrug before settling the bottles on the floor. Yamaguchi bunches his brow.

"But it even has diagrams. Power, jump, technique, stamina: how did you measure all of that?" You give a sheepish smile at that.

"Well, I saw it like video game characters. Tooru and Iwa would play volleyball a lot when I was younger, so I understand the game and have basically been brought up around it. So, like--" you think for a moment unscrewing the bottles and dumping them in the large sports sink. Yamaguchi steps beside you and turns on the tap. "I wrote 3 for your jump, yeah?" Yamaguchi nods. "Hinata's would obviously be 5, and I would have put you as a 2, but as you're a tall player it adds to it. So, even though Hinata and Nishi are great players, height actually is an important factor." You start to fill the bottles back up and Yamaguchi follows your lead, hanging on your every word. "Don't get me wrong, they're great players, Nishi more so, but your height is mainly in your legs which means that when you jump, there's more power added to it and--whatever you probably know what I'm on about. I don't want to mansplain something to you." You blink quickly, trying to slow down. You laugh at yourself, looking at Yamaguchi.

"But I've only played an official match once. How did you know I was trying a float serve? Or my stamina?"

"Well, it was honestly more of a guess. An educated one." You smile at him. "One of my superpowers, y'know?"

"Huh?"

"Y'know, the think Yuri was on about... weren't you there?" You tilt your head at Yamaguchi. He thinks for a moment, dipping his head, before squinting.

"Vaguely, I think..." You laugh at that before loading the bottles into the carrier.  "So your superpower is guesses?"

"Um, well... I'd say it's more deductions if anything, but that sounds kinda--eh. It was Yuri who pointed it out, and Sat said it's more my luck, but I'd like to think that I'm just really good at getting the grips of people and what they're like... If that makes any sense."

"I get it." Yamaguchi smiles as he bends down, taking the carrier for you. You go to stop him, not wanting him to have to lug it up to the clubroom, but you pause. He chose to, and trying to stop him would create awkward tension again. "Tsukki is like that. He pointed out earlier that you didn't seem so good." He then looks at you owlishly, giving an awkward chuckle. "Not that we were saying anything bad about you, but Tsukki noticed it. And he's never wrong." You suck in through your teeth.

"I didn't mean for anyone to notice. Honestly, thought I did a good job at hiding it." Yamaguchi is taken back by your honesty.

"Oh, sorry for prying." He apologises. "You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." You are hesitant as you begin to ascend the metal stairs with him. You look timid, grabbing your arm as you look away from him. It's quiet for a moment, and Yamaguchi berates himself. And you were getting along fine just then! Why did he have to open his mouth and ruin it?!

"Is it okay if I talk to you about it?" Yamaguchi stumbles, his foot slipping off the step. Your arms reach out the grab him, hands resting on his back. You both take a deep breath. "Are you okay? Do you need help with the carrier?" You worry. You look up at Yamaguchi. He wasn't facing you, and it almost seemed as if he's hiding his face. You scrunch your brow as you lean to the side, only to catch his face breaking out into a blush.

"N-no, it's fine. You can talk about it with me!" He's borderline shouting right now, but you smile. It's endearing to see him embarrassed.

"Well... not to bitch or anything, but Sat has been giving me a hard time."

"What? Why?" Yamaguchi frowns, now looking at you. He stops at the top of the steps and waits for you to get beside him. You walk in toe very slowly, prolonging the short walk.

"We had an argument over the Tooru-date-thing. He didn't like it." You look down at your feet. "I don't know--well I can think of a million reasons why he doesn't like it, but I'm not sure. So I don't even know how to apologise when I've got no clue specifically what I'm apologising for." Yamaguchi thinks for a moment, stopping outside the clubroom. He feels something in his chest at finding out you haven't been on a date with the King, but mostly he feels conflicted.

"You could always ask him?" Yamaguchi offers meekly, raising his shoulder. You sigh.

"No, Sat would just get even more pissy." You finally look Yamaguchi in the eye. "You're a guy." Yamaguchi pulls a puzzled expression. He hopes that's a statement and not a question. "I know I'm his sister and all, but is there something I'm missing from a guys perspective? Like, something I wouldn't understand as I'm a girl?" Yamaguchi thinks for a moment. You seem genuinely troubled by this, and you've opened up about it to him of all people. He needed to help you.

"Well, maybe he doesn't want Oikawa to take you away? As you're both so close, he doesn't want to lose you anymore. Something like that, maybe?" He's unsure, but it's the best thing he can think of. "There could be something that you're missing. I don't know your brother that well, but there could be more to the picture." You nod solemnly.

"That's what I thought. But I can't think of what!" You stress. The door to the clubroom swings open and Tsukishima stands there dressed back in his school uniform with his bag already hung over his shoulder.

"Why are you not coming in?" He asks. "If you don't hurry up, I'll leave without you."

"Ah, yes Tsukki!" Yamaguchi jumps in the room, his tail between his legs. Your eyes follow the brunet into the room before Tsukishima blocks your view.

"Does our local pervert want to come in and watch?" Tsukishima smirks, leering down at you. You huff, rolling your eyes.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Moon Moon."

"Bye, Hypothesis Girl."

The Next Day

ApplePi: I hope they go well.

You chuckle at his short response.

Me: I've got a month yet, but thanks! Haven't you had Hinata message you yet??? He kept mentioning you yesterday

You stare at your phone for a while, but there's no sign of a reply so you pocket your phone. You're sat at the top of the hill, waiting for Daichi to send the boys up for their laps. Heart Break Hill seemed like an overkill for a name, but you guess if you had to run up and down it ten times you'd want to die. You spot Tanaka and Ennoshita first, making their way up. It seemed Daichi had paired them up pace-wise, so you hold your pen and timer. This would help with stamina and speed for the players.

Ah, I need to mention to Ukai about match reviews. We'll have plenty of those at that camp-thingy after exams.

"You're doing good, guys." You comment as Ennoshita and Tanaka bend forward, panting.

"We've only done one lap." Ennoshita gives a breathy laugh.

"Well, I got out of breath walking up this. Can't imagine running." You chuckle, before putting pen to paper.

"What do you got there?" Tanaka leans over you, hands on his hips. You lift your notebook to your chest, hiding it from his prying eyes.

"Just notes."

"You gonna share 'em?" Tanaka asks but takes your pout as a no. "Gah, why not? I'm not gonna steal them?"

"Even if you were to steal them, you still wouldn't pass your exams." Tsukishima comments, panting slightly.

"Whaddya say?!" Tanaka yells, tilting his head back. At least he's no longer interested in you. "Wanna say that agai--hey!" You perk up at the sound of Tanaka going from annoyed to concerned. He's shouting at Hinata and Kageyama, who proceeds to run straight past you all. "Where are you guys going?!" You give a sigh.

"Pretty sure we can let them go." Tsukishim doesn't sound as riled up as Tanaka. You look up at him. Now that you think about it, Yamaguchi said it was him that noticed your change in behaviour. You thought you did a pretty good job at concealing it, but then someone like him sees through it. It is mildly annoying, but you felt warm. He paid enough attention to you to know you're not happy. He probably even said something to Yamaguchi because he knows he'll say something and you'll open up to him. Tsukishima is surprisingly kind.

"Stop your staring. I already have enough fangirls, I don't need you to be one of all people." Ah, and there he goes provoking you.

"Don't say that to (S/n)-chan!"

"Oh, mother." You stack up the dinner plates, Satoru quickly departing for your bedroom. "There's something you'll need to sign soon for volleyball."

"You joined a team?" She sounds surprised, scrolling through some social media platform on her phone.

"Yeah, but we have something next month." You rinse the plates off and you tap your nails across the metal rim of the sink. "It's practise matches with some other schools. We'll be staying overnight. It's all school funded and stuff, so I don't know if you have to pay. I doubt it as Ukai didn't mention that."

"Ukai?" Your mother looks away from her phone, staring at the back of your head. "Isn't he the coach for the boy's team?"

"Yeah, I'm the assistant coach."

"No, you aren't going."
