Serve One
Volleyball:
Two teams rally a ball back and forth over a net that divides the court in half.
The ball must not be dropped nor may it be held during play.
A game where three volleys are connected into one attack.
"Go, go, Power Rangers!" Satoru sings, jumping out of the garage onto the pavement. His white shirt is scruffily untucked, his black blazer open. You look down to your own new uniform, the black blazer uncomfortable on your shoulders and red bow constricting.
"Have you got your lunch?" You question as you sling your school bag over your shoulder, kicking the stand up.
"Er, yeah. Big brother has everything under control." Satoru grins, giving you a thumbs up.
"And big bro is still singing about Power Rangers." You point out, jutting your chin towards the garage door. Satoru sighs dreamily as he closes it, the shutter closing automatically.
"You called me big brother." He places his hand over his heart, then sits himself down on his seat. "Can't wait till school actually starts. We're going to take and break hearts." He chuckles darkly.
"Sure." You said slowly, placing your foot on the pedals, wanting to get away from your creepy brother.
"But if anyone makes passes at you, then they're dead. Only I can approve of your boyfriend. I must meet and beat 'em before you do anything." Satoru punches his fist into his palm, nodding to himself. Your scrunch up your face at your idiot brother and start riding off. "O-Oi! Wait up!" He calls, following.
"You are so contradicting yourself." You shake your head with a sigh.
"Big words confuse me, and you know this." Satoru purses his lips.
"Everything big confuses you." You smirk as you pedal faster, cycling down the clear paths. He grins, keeping his pace as you both pedal quickly to school.
"You're shorter!" He laughs.
"By five centimetres!" You shout hotly.
Why does he always have to remind you?
You shake your head, slowing down at the traffic light. You are both quiet for a while until something comes to mind.
"What class are you in again?" You ask. You remember him telling, but you had better things to do. A manga was just updated, and he expected you to pick him over One Punch Man?
"1! And you're in 4!" He huffs indignity. "I can't believe it, separating us like that. Now I won't get to see you."
"I know, right? I won't get referred to as Satoru's sister by my classmates." You grin gleefully.
That is one of the things you hate about Satoru being the extrovert he is. It's always Satoru and (F/n), not (F/n) and Satoru. It would be better if they left you alone, leaving you to melt into the background. You'd just rather the reason you are ignored is that you don't stand out, not because your brother soaks up the spotlight. You sigh as you stand on your bike. As you and brother race up a hill, you see a flash of red pass your vision, then when your bikes zoom down the mountain at full speed, and everything's just a blur. You soon catch up to the other cyclist.
"Hi! I'm Hinata Shouyo!" He shouts, staring at your brother. You look over, eyebrow cocked. "You're going to Karasuno, aren't you? So am I! First year class 1! What class are you in?" He seems to ask this in one breath. But sadly, not to you.
"I'm (S/n) Satoru! Class 1! Let's be friends!" Satoru shouts happily with a gleaming smile to the peppy ginger. You stay silent through the entire ordeal. Your brother is so weird.
Who would just ask someone to be friends? How does he know this boy is alright to hang with? What if he was in the bad crowd? Just because he looked like a happy ball of sunshine doesn't mean he is nice. What if-
"-And that's (F/n)! Isn't she pretty?" Your brother quips. You scowl at Satoru, then look past him to greet his new friend in a civil manner and say no more. But instead, Hinata is staring at you with a red face. From his intense stare your face flushes and you look away as your hair continues to wave in the wind.
Hinata is bewildered by his new friend's friend. A (e/c) eyed beauty riding to his left and he didn't even notice! The sun is shining down on her skin, giving it a healthy glow and her locks are flowing in the wind. Everything seems to be in slow motion as their gaze lock for a moment before she studies back on the road ahead.
"Hi, Class 4, nice to meet you." You take a quick glance at him again and berate yourself before looking at the wall ahead. "(L/n) (F/n)."
You furrow your brows in thought. This boy, Hinata, looks very familiar. His perky attitude from when he spoke to your brother is stuck somewhere in your mind.
Hinata Shouyo? That sounds so familiar.
"Hinata? You didn't answer my question." Satoru furrows his brow in confusion. Everything resumed back to normal time again as Hinata breaks into a blush.
"S-she's is pretty!" He squeaks. Satoru's features darken, a menacing smile falling on his features.
"Don't go gettin' feelings for her." He said eerily. Hinata squeaks.
"No!" He shouts, straightening up. Then he slumps and attempts to whisper. "So, is (F/n)-chan your girlfriend?" Your face falls as your lip sets into a firm line, plus the cringe internally. He called a stranger by their first name. Who even does that? It was so... personal.
"No, he's my twin brother." You answer for your brother who seems to pale at the question.
"Twins! I've never met twins before! That's so cool to have a twin!" Hinata makes a strange noise as Satoru and you laugh.
"It's fun-" "-but it can be annoying!" You finish with a smile. Hinata gawks.
"Wow! So cool!" Hinata's eyes gleam.
"It's a-" "-twin thing." Both of you smirk. Hinata keeps on making noises. He seems easily entertained. The three of you soon arrive at school and lock up your bikes. You all must go to your class, and from there you would be led to the hall for the ceremony.
"Bye, Sat." You wave, gripping your bag strap as you begin to walk in the opposite direction of him.
"You're not coming with us?" Hinata asks, his eyes staring into yours. Why is this kid's stare so soul-sucking?
"She's in a different class." Satoru answers for you as he walks down the hall with Hinata.
"Oh, wait!" Hinata yells, you look back at him, eyebrow rose in query. Instead of approaching you, he runs to the bike rack and grabs something from his chain. "I forgot the key." You laugh softly at this, nose scrunching in confusion.
A forgetful child too. He's gonna be a great friend for Satoru.
"See you guys later." You wiggle your fingers, a smile breaking out on your face. Then as they turned back, you hunched your figure, trying to hide in the crowd of students.
So, they're walking to one, which means I'm three classes down from that.
You begin to panic about where you are heading. Then as you pass an open door, you spot your friends by the window. You slowly enter your class, checking to see if anyone caught you almost walking pass, and see students hanging around in various groups around the room. You shyly push a strand of hair behind your ear, trying to blend in and not be seen.
"(F/n)-chan! Over here!" Yuri shouts, inviting you over. You shuffle over, head and eyes down, as people stare over from your friend's shouts, watching you in curiosity. Each ask about their holidays and discuss your mornings. That soon dies down to one thing.
"Tall boys are always good looking."
"Who?" You ask, perking up.
"The blond tall boy over there." Yuri points. "I can't believe you didn't notice him already." Your eyes wonder over to beside the door. A gangly boy stood beside the open door, short hair and a sour expression on his face as he stares at his phone screen. His brunet friend stands next to him, playing with his fingers.
"Being that tall could be complicated." You say, looking back at your friends.
"Only you could think of something like that." One of your friends laugh.
"But it would." You insist, laughing. "Like kissing him, you'd have to crane your head —Painful. And then imagine how many doors he can't fit through. They're both pains in the neck, literally." You think aloud, making hand jesters. They laugh as they look over at the tall blond. The boy looks up, clicking the top of his phone and pockets it. His gaze flickers over each of you, scowling sourly, before rolling his eyes and saying something to his friend beside him. You chuckle into your fist, the girl's laughter contagious. The brunet boy next to him stares over once his friend finishes, nodding to whatever the tallboy had said. You tilt your head, his soft features catching your eye. His hair brushes the bottom of his ears and freckles dotted his face. You hum through your nose, the corner of your lip turning up.
Defiantly an uke.
(You have a very dirty mind reader-chan!)
"Tsukki, people are looking at you." Yamaguchi points out as a group of girls look over.
"And?" Tsukishima questions, giving the girls a quick peek. He watches pensively at the newest member of the group. When you entered the room your friend altered the entire class of your presents and now you stand with them, chatting animatedly. When you look over, Tsukishima furrows his brow. Your (e/c) eyes look at him briefly before flickering to Yamaguchi. The brunet stiffens under your gaze. Yamaguchi sucks in a breath under her stare. Tsukishima smirks down at his freckled friend. Tadashi sees his smug gaze and grows nervous.
"So," Tadashi licks his lips, "You're popular with the girls in our class."
"For once, one seemed to like you," Tsukishima replies casually.
"N-no, she was just looking at me." Yamaguchi splutters.
"And you weren't looking back?" Tsukishima pesters.
"S-she's pretty but I don't like her!" Yamaguchi defends. A smug look appears on Tsukishima's face as Yamaguchi changes the subject quickly.
"(F/n)-chan, your face is red." You laugh nervously.
"It's nothing." You say shyly, flapping a hand.
"Oh, do you like the blond," Yuri smirks.
"Oh God, yes!" You roll your eyes. "Upon laying my eyes on the, my heart stammers and my mind is taken by the blond pretentious prick by the door. Oh, how I love blonds, he consumes my every waking thought and sets my loi- "
"Okay! I get it." Yuri huffs, shoulders sagging. The teacher enters the class and greets everyone with a smile. You wait patiently for your seat to be assigned, becoming more nervous as your friends disappear one by one. It got to the second back row and you finally get given your seat. It is behind the freckled boy. You sit awkwardly as you grip the end of your sleeves in your palms. None of your friends are near you so you will be lonely. Or you could just pay attention to class.
What an excellent way to start the school year.
Tsukishima plops down in his seat once the teacher calls his name. He dumps his bag by his desk, not bothering to hang it from the hook. He looks around, checking out his new seatmates. His gaze flickers up in front, checking the words on the board and stretches out his legs. His foot brushes the chair in front and his gaze flickers to the person in front. It's you. A thud on the back of your chair distracts you, your nose twitching in annoyance at the pressure. You peer behind you whilst the teacher faces the board, trying to find the owner of the pesky feet. Tsukishima watches as you cross your ankles, trying to turn to take a look at him. Your hair brushes over the back of your chair, and he wonders if he could be just that extra bit more annoying and push it with his foot. Tsukishima perks a brow and a smirk crawls to his lips. He stretches his legs further, foot pressing the gap on the back of the chair to hold his legs up, the sole of his shoe brushes the back of your blazer.
You sigh as you walk out the stuffy assembly hall. The vice-principle made a long speech as students whispered among themselves about his toupee. You must admit it is funny, and when you caught a glimpse of your brother sniggering with Hinata, your smile grew much bigger. Who knew that could make you so light on your feet. But now it is time to get through the corridors on corridors of death.
The senpais are out and ready to beg.
A Senpai stands at every turn trying to coax students into a random club they are an advocate for. You wanted to avoid the burling hallways, so you take the long way around. You could meet everyone outside your class, maybe greet friends from middle school or even make new friends. When you're halfway around the school building, tennis courts to your left, you remember. Today is a half-day. The rest of the day is meant to be spent finding a club or finding your lessons. You sigh and your head lolls forward. You will be alone as all your friends search for a club to join. You sluggishly walk to the back entrance, passing one of the four school gyms that is disconnected to the buildings. But you stammer back, two fast bodies brushing past yours in a hurry. You turn to see, stood at the threshold of the gym door, Hinata and Satoru. You blink owlishly and get ready to walk back inside the main building when you suddenly hear loud shouts that clasps your curiosity.
"M-my name is Hinata Shouyo. You probably don't remember the team you beat in the first match!" Hinata shouts. You furrow your brows in confusion and lean to look around Hinata, only to see a familiar figure.
"I remember you very well." Kageyama states, already in the gym uniform with his sleeves pulled back to his elbows.
"What? You wanna fight?"
"You were lousy!" Kageyama insults Hinata.
"D-don't make fun of me. Sure, we got slaughtered by you guys. Next time, I won't lose!" Hinata pledges.
"You do realize that you can't play against him if you go to the same school." Satoru voices your thoughts. Hinata blinks owlishly before shouting something random, but Satoru and you ignore him.
"Hi Kageyama, nice to see you again." Satoru sends a cheeky salute rocking back onto his heels.
"Hello." Kageyama stares at him through pensive eyes.
"You know him?!" Hinata asks in disbelief, looking at Satoru as if he had personally offended him.
"Yeah." Satoru shoves his hands into his trouser pockets. "He visits my family's shop. He's a member too." Satoru tilts his head and gives a closed eye smile.
"Your family has a shop? I didn't know that!" Hinata marvels.
"Nothing big." Satoru waves him off with a grin. "But Hinata's right, shouldn't you be at a strong school?" Satoru ask Kageyama. Kageyama turns his head away.
"The strongest school in the prefecture... Rejected me." Hinata and Satoru stare at him and you quickly cover your mouth to stop your snickers.
"You didn't make it?" Hinata asks. "Even though you're the King of the Court?" Kageyama clicks his tongue, and you instantly stop laughing.
"Don't-" Kageyama glares at him "-call me that!"
"Hello (S/n)-san." A voice greets from behind you, making you freeze.
"Hi, Suga-Senpai." You turn around sheepishly with pink tinting your cheeks. In comparison to some, you didn't have to look that high when speaking with Sugawara Koushi. He has a slender frame, and insists that his hair is platinum blond even when everyone knows it is grey. Thick eyebrows frame his round face, a beauty mark under his left brow eyes. He stands tall with a cheeky grin, a hand placed on his hip.
"Aw! You look even cuter in this uniform!" Tanaka slaps his hands on his cheeks, his blazer thrown on his shoulder slipping off. He tilts his shaved head, the second year looking more intimidating with the buzz cut. "Why aren't you wearing a skirt?"
"O-oh... um, I don't wear skirts." You answer awkwardly as Tanaka seems to zero-in on your legs.
"Are you here to become part of the club?" Daichi asks with a grin, crossing his broad arms over his chest. He is the tallest of the trio here, and has a broad bulky frame that can never be mistaken for chub. You shake your head quickly. "Really? I thought because (S/n) was, you'd be sure to join."
"Ah, no. Besides this is a boy's club. I'm sure there's no space for girls." You say offhandedly, trying your hardest not to make eye contact without seeming rude.
"We have a space for assistant manager. I'm sure Shimizu would love to have you help her." Sugawara gives a closed-eyed smile. You run your hand through your hair and avert your eyes.
"I'll think about it... But, can I still wait inside for Satoru to finish?" You ask, looking up through your lashes.
"Sure. Stay as long as you like." Daichi pats your shoulder, walking past.
"Thank you." You bow before making your way in. You look around for the guy that bridged that gap between you and rest of the volleyball team. He helped Satoru with volleyball back in middle school and took you to the school a few times last year to scope out the club. He'd even been over a couple times! But you couldn't spot him. You make eye contact with Satoru and he tilts his head at you, to which you reply with a shoulder shrug and make your way over to the stage area. You sit on the raised boards and place down your bag, hands lying idle on the edge of the stage.
"That guy's totally cocky." Tanaka complains.
"Don't try and intimidate him." Sugawara said.
"I-I wouldn't do something like that." Tanaka stutters.
"Hello." Kageyama greets, his face removed from all agitation he had when speaking to Hinata.
"Hiya!" Satoru smiles. Tanaka tilts his head back and bears his teeth.
"Hey, hey, hey. Who said you guys could-" then Daichi pulls him back by the collar.
"You're Kageyama?" Daichi asks as he approaches the boys.
"Osu." Kageyama nods. You ignore the conversation and the bright idiotic smile Satoru has plastered on his face, and watch Hinata. You squint your eyes at him as he starts to walk side-to-side like a crab. You stifle a giggle in your hand From your perfect view you can see Hinata walk around the back of them, knowing exactly what he is thinking.
Kageyama-san is taller.
You think in surprise. You knew the boy is tall, but never realised he was taller than your senpai's. But then again, your other senpai's were taller than Kageyama. That's why it surprised you so much.
But the Senpai's are thicker? Broader than Kageyama-San. They've probably got big muscles compared to Kageyama-san's too.
"Osu!" Hinata shouts. You clamp your hand over your mouth, softening your breath, and keep the camera up.
"How tall are you?" Daichi asks, straight up ignoring Hinata.
He totally blanked Hinata! This is hilarious!
You continue to try and hide your laughter as Hinata becomes more and more dejected.
"Hello!" Hinata shouts again, grabbing everyone attention.
"Huh? Oh! You!" Tanaka points at Hinata. "Shorty #1!" The two 3rd Years look at Hinata in shock. Daichi looks at the papers in his hand.
"So, the other application here, Hinata, is... you?" Daichi's eyes flicker between the sheet to Hinata. "I'm a little surprised... I see." Daichi nods then looks at all three of them. "So, you three are here at Karasuno." Hinata tilts his head in confusion.
"We saw your match last year." Sugawara adds, looking between Kageyama and Hinata.
"You're way short and sucked bad, but you've got guts." Tanaka leans forward.
"Thanks!" Hinata shouts. Sugawara chuckles, shaking his head.
"Your jumps were awesome, too." Sugawara compliments.
"But you haven't grown much since." Tanaka grins as he holds up his hand to Hinata's height, measuring Hinata against himself. Hinata clenches his fists, lips pursed.
"I may be little, but I can jump! I'll be Karasuno's ace!" Hinata shouts. You sigh, tilting your head as you bring your knee up, propping your chin on it.
"Hey, hey. The newbie says he's gonna be the ace?" Tanaka's face shadows. "You've got some nerve."
"It's good to be ambitious, right?" Sugawara smiles.
"I'll do my best." Hinata beams. You smile softly.
Aw, look at Sunshine.
"If you want to be the ace, I hope you've improved," Kageyama tells him. "If you goof around, you'll waste another three years." Kageyama and Hinata have a staredown.
"Why must you say that, Kageyama?" Daichi questions in a dreary tone.
"I played with all my might." Hinata shouts.
And they're getting interesting again. What is this? A sports anime?
"But don't tell me everything I've done is a waste!" The two 1st years glower at each other.
"Guys... You know, you're not enemies anymore." Daichi begins. "Volleyball is about teamwork--"
"I'll challenge you." You laugh at that, staring in disbelief.
I'm so happy I've recorded this. They interrupted Daichi, so all hell is going to break loose.
"Challenge me to what?" Kageyama asks. An amused grin is plastered across your face. Hinata and Kageyama continue to argue as Daichi stands still, in shock from being interrupted.
"Shoosh! Stop talking!" Satoru whisper/shouts as he waves his hands around in panic.
"Volleyball, what else?" Hinata shouts. Satoru slowly walks away from them, backing up to the stage.
"Daichi's gonna kill them." Satoru whispers through clenched teeth. You stifle laughter.
"What's all the commotion, volleyball club?" A voice asks.
"Yikes. The VP!" Tanaka whisper/shouts.
"Vice Principle!" Sugawara corrects him in a hushed tone.
"Vice Principle!" Tanaka repeats. The Vice Principle walks over to the group of boys as you watch anxiously.
"You better not be arguing." The dean tells them.
"Of course not, just a friendly rivalry. Right?" Daichi asks the boys.
"This Dean likes to make trouble, so keep it down." Tanaka warns the first years.
"How much you wanna bet this goes downhill?" You whisper, leaning forwards and putting your elbow on your brother's shoulder.
"Energy drink if they get stopped." Satoru puts his fist out.
"(Favourite drink) if it hits someone." You smirk. Satoru nods to himself and you hit the top of his fist with your own. You and your brother had a sad sense of humour. You watch calmly as the idiotic duo start their game.
"Is he a 1st-year student?" The dean asks. But you pay no attention to him as Kageyama gets ready to hit the ball.
A jump serve? He didn't do them in middle school. He must've improved.
Your eyes follow the ball to Hinata. He jumps out the way, and you scowl.
"Aw, it didn't hit Hinata." Satoru pouts.
"You're lovely." You comment dryly.
"What? Why? If his face gets messed up, you won't be interested in him." Satoru whines in defence.
"I wouldn't care if his face was messed up." You scowl.
"So, you do like him?" Satoru asks wearily.
"Shut up." You scoff. "I don't like him. I spend my every waking moment thinking of him."
"But we only met him today?"
"One more!" Hinata instructs, getting back in the position to receive.
"Hey. Enough is enough!" Daichi shouts.
"They don't listen to their captain. This could be a problem." The dean comments drily. You scowl at him.
He's lovely, isn't he? I bet the guy's never played volleyball.
You watch Kageyama do another jump serve, and Hinata swiftly moves to receive the ball.
"He's got fast reflexes. He's right in front-" Sugawara starts, but he spoke to soon. Hinata hits the ball up into his own face. It bounces off into the dean's cheek, making his wig fly off and onto Daichi's head. Everyone is silent as they watch for the dean's next move.
"He was wearing a wig?" Kageyama asks incredulously, eyelids fluttering.
"You just noticed?" Hinata laugh. "Everyone at the entrance ceremony could tell."
"I mean, seriously, it's a different shade to the rest of his hair." Satoru snickers.
"You guys! Shut up!" Tanaka laughs as he holds his hand over his mouth. You grin widely, your body shaking with kept in giggles.
Oh my god! This is priceless!
"Tanaka, you shut up too." Sugawara scolds.
"Sawamura-kun, I'd like a word with you." The dean and Daichi leave the gym and stand outside as you and Satoru burst out laughing.
"Did you see his face?!" Satoru laughs, clutching his stomach.
"Nice call on the hair!" You praise, clamping your hand over your mouth as your shoulders shake.
"You two! Be quiet!" Tanaka cackles.
