Sketch # 9

The morning sun cast a golden glow over the landscape as Nalani and Lena drove toward the beach, the warm rays already hinting at a perfect day ahead. Lena, as usual, was full of energy, her excitement palpable as she sang loudly and enthusiastically along to the radio. Nalani, sitting in the passenger seat, couldn't help but smile at her friend's antics.

"Now he's thinkin' 'bout me every night, oh. Is it that sweet? I guess so. Say you can't sleep, baby, I know. That's that me, espresso~," Lena sang along with Nalani staring at her brows furrowed, thinking that Lena is overdoing it.

"I kind of regret agreeing to this now," Nalani teased, her voice carrying a note of mock exasperation. "You've been singing the entire drive!"

Lena laughed, her laughter bright and infectious. "You love my singing, admit it! Besides, I know you don't mean it. You'd definitely cry if I stopped."

Nalani rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress a smile. "Maybe," she admitted. "But only because it would be eerily quiet."

They both laughed, the sound of their joy blending with the music and the hum of the car as they made their way to the beach. The coastal road unfurled before them, the sight of the sparkling ocean in the distance bringing a sense of anticipation and excitement.

Upon arriving at the beach, they wasted no time kicking off their shoes and running toward the water. The cool sand felt heavenly beneath their feet, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore was like music to their ears. They set up their spot, spreading out a large blanket and setting up an umbrella for shade. The beach was relatively quiet, with only a few families and couples scattered about, enjoying the peaceful morning.

Lena, ever the playful spirit, was the first to dash into the water, her laughter ringing out as she splashed into the waves. Nalani followed more slowly, savoring the feel of the sun on her skin and the gentle breeze in her hair. The water was cool and refreshing, and she waded in, joining Lena in the waves.

They spent hours swimming, splashing each other, and enjoying the simple pleasure of being by the sea. Nalani felt a sense of freedom and lightness she hadn't experienced in a long time. The burdens and worries that had weighed on her seemed to melt away in the face of Lena's infectious joy and the soothing rhythm of the ocean.

After a particularly energetic bout of splashing, Nalani took a break, lying on her towel under the shade of the umbrella. She watched Lena with a fond smile as her friend continued to frolic in the water, her energy seemingly boundless. As she relaxed, Nalani's eyes fell on the beach bag she had brought with her. Poking out from the top was a magazine—the same one that featured the exhibit in Paris she had been planning to attend.

Lena, noticing Nalani's gaze, walked back to the blanket and flopped down beside her, water dripping from her hair and body. "What's that you're looking at?" she asked, reaching for the magazine.

Nalani handed it to her, watching as Lena flipped through the pages. "It's about the exhibit in Paris. I'm planning to go."

Lena's eyes widened with surprise and excitement. "No way! I got an invite from a relative to go to the same exhibit. I wasn't really planning on going, but now that you're going, I have no reason to refuse, do I?"

Nalani's eyebrows raised in surprise. "Really? You're coming with me?"

"Absolutely!" Lena declared with a grin. "I mean, what's a trip to Paris without my best friend? Plus, it sounds like an amazing opportunity for both of us. You can find your inspiration, and I can... well, I can enjoy Paris and support you and maybe find some inspiration too."

Nalani's heart swelled with gratitude and affection for Lena. "Thanks, Lena. I'd love to have you there with me. It'll be like old times, but in a new place."

"Paris, here we come!" Lena cheered, holding up her drink in a toast. Nalani clinked her bottle against Lena's, feeling a wave of excitement wash over her. For the first time in a long while, the future seemed bright and full of possibilities. With her best friend by her side and a renewed sense of purpose, Nalani felt ready to take on the world, starting with the city of lights and the echoes of her mother's legacy.

As the day progressed, they continued to enjoy the beach, alternating between swimming, sunbathing, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. Nalani felt a deep sense of contentment, the kind that came from spending time with someone who understood her completely. Lena had always been her rock, her constant source of support and laughter, and today was no different.

At one point, they decided to take a walk along the shoreline, the water lapping at their feet as they strolled. The conversation flowed easily, touching on everything from their childhood memories to their dreams for the future.

"You know," Lena said, kicking at the water playfully, "I've always admired how you've managed to stay so strong through everything. Your mom's passing, your dad's condition... it's a lot to handle."

Nalani shrugged, a bittersweet smile on her lips. "I didn't always feel strong. There were times when I wanted to give up. But I think... I think my mom's paintings gave me something to hold on to. And having friends like you made all the difference."

Lena wrapped an arm around Nalani's shoulders, giving her a comforting squeeze. "Well, you're stuck with me, whether you like it or not. And we're going to make the most of this trip to Paris. Who knows what kind of inspiration you'll find there?"

Nalani nodded, feeling a surge of determination. "You're right. It's time to embrace the future and let go of the past. Paris is just the beginning."

They continued their walk, the conversation eventually drifting to lighter topics, their laughter mingling with the sound of the waves. By the time they returned to their spot on the beach, the sun was beginning its descent, casting a warm, golden hue over everything.

As the sky turned shades of pink and orange, they sat on their blanket, watching the sunset. Lena pulled out her phone and snapped a few pictures, capturing the beauty of the moment.

"Hey, let's take a selfie," Lena suggested, scooting closer to Nalani. "We need to document our pre-Paris adventure."

Nalani laughed and leaned in, and they took a series of silly and serious selfies, each one a testament to their friendship and the joy of the day. When they were done, Lena posted a few on social media with a caption that read, "Best day ever with my bestie! Paris, here we come!"

The sun dipped below the horizon, and the beach slowly emptied as people began to pack up and head home. Nalani and Lena lingered, enjoying the peacefulness of the evening. They eventually packed up their things and headed back to the car, their spirits high.

The drive back was filled with more singing and laughter, the bond between them stronger than ever. As they pulled into Nalani's driveway, Lena turned to her with a serious expression.

"You know, Nalani, I'm really proud of you. You've come a long way, and I can't wait to see what amazing things you'll do next."

Nalani felt a lump in her throat, touched by Lena's words. "Thanks, Lena. I couldn't have done it without you. You've had a hard time because of me too but thank you for always being there"

They hugged, a brief but heartfelt embrace, before heading inside. As Nalani got ready for bed that night, she couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of hope and excitement. The future was uncertain, but with friends like Lena and the promise of new adventures in Paris, she felt going all out and doing her best too.

Lying in bed, Nalani thought about the day, the laughter, and the shared moments of reflection. She knew that the journey ahead wouldn't be easy, but she was no longer afraid. Paris was just the beginning, and she was ready to embrace whatever inspiration and challenges awaited her there.
