Delicious Aloysius

Delicious Aloysius (pronounced Aloe-icious)

Sister Aloysius

You were so delicious,

Cackling in your robes of black

Bringing all the colour back

To Macbeth and Lear

Yes, you did inspire fear.

By closed classroom door you would remain.

To touch the knob you would distain.

And as God-like sentry waited for,

A dumb-struck girl to do the chore.

Thus we gained entrance to your lair,

Unaware of magic lurking there.

Sister; you did make us wonder.

Opened windows to rain and thunder,

While resounding from the record player

Rose a booming thespian underlayer,

From which you said we'd cull the truth.

As we shivered cold and drenched; forsooth.

You insisted that we be aware

Of what Shakespeare's people had to bear.

To really understand, you said;

'Tis more than just what you have read.

Do deign to take their place in stead.'

Cognoscente that thoughts of boys,

Overrode all bard and language joys;

That our uniforms were merely flotsam;

You believed there might inspired thought come,

To the jelly of grey matter,

Neath all the vapid teenage chatter.

In Wimple, Habit and Rosary beads,

Like a raven dropping seeds

You hovered over suspect ground,

Hoping fertile brain cells would be found.

So if an essay brought a smile,

We knew it had been all worthwhile.

Yes, Sister Alysius,

You made Hamlet taste delicious.
