THIRTY-SIX. take it all off and exist
THE SMELL of the freshly cut grass and breakfast made by the chefs your parents hired, because they can't cook for the life of them, is how Rory Brewer woke up that morning.
This felt like a fresh start. She felt absolutely free.
She had her family, friends, and boyfriend.
What could go wrong?
Rory slipped on her shoes as her naturally curly hair fell over her shoulders. She wore a dark blue Duke sweatshirt and grabbed her car keys as she stepped outside in the San Fernando Valley sun basked down on her tanned skin.
She felt refreshed, and she could drive herself to school again. It was Rory Brewer's time to shine and she be damned if she let anyone or anything ruin her senior year at West Valley.
She had big plans and even bigger goals.
She wanted to apply to Brown University and study Psychology and possibly join their gymnastics team, it was the closest thing they had to karate and she wanted to keep that spirit alive for as long as she could.
Her entire life had been based on two things. Modeling from her mother and karate from her father. She chose the path her father raised her on and learned it with ease. She was happy with it and wouldn't have it any other way.
Soon enough, Rory pulled into the school's parking lot and made her way inside. She instantly made her way over to the office just in time to see her boyfriend walking out of it.
She clasped her hands together as she approached him. This, if possible, would be Robby's first day at West Valley High School.
And with a small smile, Robby held the 'Welcome New Students' folder in his hands.
Rory smiled brightly as she drew closer to him and brought her boyfriend into her embrace. "I'm so glad you're here." She exclaimed.
Robby hugged her back. To him, Rory had been the only person to have his back from the beginning. Truly, the two of them met by fate, Rory tripping over a rock while skateboarding and having your future girlfriend literally fall into your arms was something that many people could say happened to them.
He was lucky to have her in his life, he wouldn't be the same person he was now without her.
But he had his fears and they were reasonable. Rory was smart, she was up there with Demetri and Eli. She was most likely going to get into her dream school while he was stuck at the Valley. He was going to college, but he hadn't told her that yet, all he'd told her was that he knew that he wasn't getting into an Ivy like she was.
They didn't want to worry about that at the moment, for now, everyone's mind was on the Sekai Taikai. This could and would change the lives of all who competed and it would be the main thing that Miyagi Fang/Do/Name to be Decided until the day of the tournament.
This was something that Rory could share with her father for the rest of her life. She wanted to make him proud.
That's all Rory ever wanted.
AT MIYAGI-DO, as Rory would now call it until stated otherwise, spun her bō staff in her hands as she waited for practice to start.
She wanted to do well in the Sekai Taikai. It was a televised event that millions would see and though Rory was no stranger to a camera, she knew this was different. She wanted to prove that she worked hard for what she got, not because of the Brewer name. She had something to prove. Something to fight for.
But before they could get into practicing, Hawk and Demetri called everyone to discuss something they had seemingly been talking about for a couple of weeks.
"It's been a long road, but we're finally all on the same side." Hawk spoke. "And as a reward? The toughest test any of us have ever had to face."
Demetri continued. "The Sekai Taikai is the most prestigious karate tournament in modern martial arts history. For over a century, fighters from across the globe have gathered every two years to compete for the title of World's Best."
"If the All Valley is March Madness, this is the Olympics," Hawk smiled. "plus the gladiator games and the Kumite from Bloodsport all rolled into one."
"If we win-" Demetri began, but Hawk was quickly to clear his throat. "Excuse me, when we win, the spoils will be life-changing."
"But it's gonna take all of our focus and all the wisdom our senseis have to offer." Hawk said.
"Yes, which is why we decided to take at least one thing off your plates. Coming up with our new dojo name." Demetri smiled.
"Yes!" Hawk exclaimed. "After some spirited brainstorming and ad hoc focus-grouping. and also a dojo-wide vote, we have a winner."
Hawk and Demetri turned to face the covered logo and pulled the sheet off of it to reveal the new dojo name and logo.
"Miyagi Fang Karate!" They smiled.
The group clapped and the senseis praised them for the name before splitting off once again before practice began.
"You think they like the name?" Robby muttered.
Rory looked up with a small smile. "Yeah, I think so. It has something of Mr. LaRusso's and something for your dad. It all works out."
"And you're sure that your dad didn't want anything with the Wasabi Warriors in the new name?" He asked.
Rory shook her head, her arms crossed over her chest. "With my Aunt Kim back in Seaford running the Wasabi Warriors dojo, I don't think my Dad wants to add anything in because of that. Plus Wasabi Miyagi-Fang was a little too much." She chuckled.
Robby chuckled softly before glancing over at Miguel who'd been speaking to Tory.
Ever since Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Fang... yeah, Miyagi-Fang joined as one, the two of them had been... distant. They weren't friends but they didn't hate each other, they were barely acquaintances.
Tory had beaten Rory up pretty badly not once, but twice, and somehow, Tory had gone to Rory when she needed help the most.
Now that they were officially on the same side, Robby and Miguel wanted to try and get the two to at least talk to each other.
"So, do you think you'll be able to hang out tonight?" He asked.
Rory nodded. "Yeah, sure. Just you and I?"
"Um, I was thinking we invite Miguel and Tory to come with us."
Rory furrowed her brows before looking over at Robby. "Me, you, Miguel... and Tory?"
Robby nodded as he looked down at his girlfriend. Her brows had been tightly knitted together as she held her arms over her chest.
"Look, I don't like to admit when someone has kicked my ass, but Tory has kicked my ass twice and the first time I was barely conscious for it." Rory said.
"Hey," Robby turned, his body facing Rory as she looked up at him. He gently took her hand and gave it a small squeeze. "we don't have to go if you don't want to. We can watch a movie at your place."
Rory sighed heavily and looked past Robby to see Miguel and Tory talking, most likely about hanging out tonight. She brushed her hair behind her ear before looking up at Robby once more.
"Fine," She muttered. "but only for an hour."
"That's fine." Robby nodded. "We can leave whenever you want."
Robby leaned down and gave Rory a soft kiss on her lips before pulling back and grinning at her.
"Thank you for trying."
Rory rolled her eyes and gently pushed Robby back.
"Yeah, whatever."
IT WAS awkward. Everything about this was awkward. It was interesting to think that Tory and Rory were close at some point and now they stood in the middle of Golf N' Stuff with their arms crossed over their chest as they watched Robby throw a punch at one of the various games.
"It's all in legs." Robby smiled.
"Yeah, well, congrats on your rather average leg strength, sir." Miguel teased.
Robby held his smile as he looked over at the two girls. They hadn't spoken to each other whatsoever.
"All right, who's next?" Robby asked.
"I'm good." Tory said quickly.
Rory turned her head to look over at Tory before looking over at Robby. She heavily sighed and shook her head.
"Me too."
"Okay." Miguel muttered. "What about the, uh, batting cages? I heard there's a new fast pitch."
Rory brushed her hair behind her ear. "Sure." She muttered and followed Robby towards the batting cages.
"And this was your idea?" Rory asked.
Tory and Miguel had been following a little further behind as Rory and Robby led the two of them to the batting cages.
"It was Miguel's idea." Robby answered. "He thought it might help you guys stop avoiding each other."
"I'm not avoiding her." Rory replied. "We aren't really friends. We just don't connect like we used to. Us being cool isn't going to happen by playing a couple of Wack-A-Mole games."
"Just give her a chance." Robby said. "I mean, things are gonna be different from now on, so..."
Robby suddenly stopped in his tracks and Rory followed his eyes. Over by Hoop Fever, stood Kenny.
"He's still not talking to you?" Rory asked.
Robby shook his head. "No. I've gotta give it another shot. He needs to know there's another way besides the shit Silver was feeding him. At least here, he can't send my calls to voicemail." He sighed as he looked over at the three. "I'm gonna be right back."
Miguel gathered the two girls and sat down with them at a table. He ordered an ice cream for them to share, but he'd been the only one enjoying the sweet treat.
"So, I mean, it's our senior year, right?" Miguel quipped. "College right around the corner. Kinda crazy."
Rory nodded. "Yeah, transferring in the middle of the year sucked, but I made better friends here than I ever did in Seaford. Now we're planning our futures between training every day. I want to go to Brown, but I think I need to look at other schools just in case, you know?" Rory smiled. "Heard you wanted to go to Stanford."
Miguel smiled, nodding his head. "Yeah, yeah. Fingers crossed." He turned his head to look at Tory. "What about you?"
Tory paused before answering. "It's kinda hard to get in anywhere when you spent almost a year on probation."
"Right." Miguel muttered. "Um..."
Silence quickly arose between the three of them but overall... it could've been way worse, no? Regardless, they didn't sit at the table much longer and found Robby standing by one of the rigged ticket games.
They watched as an older guy and Kenny walked away from him.
"You know that guy?" Miguel asked.
Robby turned. "It's Kenny's brother. Met in juvie. He told me to leave Kenny alone."
"Are you?" Rory asked.
"Do whatever you need to do." Tory said.
Miguel nodded. "We're there for you, man"
The three followed from a distance as they stood by the batting cages.
They watched as Robby made his way in to talk to Kenny and suddenly Kenny's brother pushed Robby back. Robby didn't want to fight he made that clear from the get-go and soon enough it was a two-on-one fight until Miguel stepped in and sideswiped his brother to the ground.
Soon enough, Kenny fell to the ground and to his left laid his baseball bat. He went to grab it, but Rory quickly placed her foot on it and looked down at the boy with furrowed brows.
"Are you serious?" She asked.
Kenny scrambled to his feet. "Out of my way, Brewer. I don't wanna hit a girl."
Tory chuckled, making her way into the batting cages. "That's sweet. You won't."
Kenny tried to move past the two, but Rory pushed him back. Both Rory and Tory tried to tell Kenny how Miyagi-Do would be beneficial to him and how it would be better than anything he went through Cobra Kai, but he wasn't having it.
Eventually, the two girls grabbed Kenny's wrist and he pulled with all his might, but it wasn't enough because he ended up on the floor once more and he once again scrambled to his feet, but this time, his brother stopped the fight from continuing.
With that, they left.
"Well," Robby sighed. "that could have gone better."
"Could have gone worse." Miguel smiled.
Rory sighed, looking over at Tory. "You've seemed to pick up Cobra Kai quickly."
Tory smiled. "Yeah, well, I fought you enough. I guess some of it must have rubbed off."
Though funny at the moment, it wouldn't be later.
RORY HAD made it home in one piece. She opened the front door with a sigh and placed her car keys in the bowl.
"Rory?"
She turned, seeing her father on the couch.
"How was the double date?" Jack asked.
Rory sighed and made her way over to the couch, sitting right next to her father as a random workout video played on the TV.
"It was fine." She answered, shrugging her shoulders. "It's not like we made up overnight, you know, but I think we'll be more... cordial with each other."
Jack nodded. "That's good. Did you talk about-"
"No." Rory answered, pulling her legs towards her chest. "I... I don't think I'm ready to talk about that with her."
It was mention in context. About the fight between them. But Rory wasn't ready to tell Tory how she felt about it, what it did to her. She didn't really talk about it to anyone. It severely damaged her.
Jack nodded. "Don't push yourself, Rory."
She gave her father a small smile. "I won't." She soon stood from the couch. "I should get ready for bed. Gotta long day ahead of me."
Jack smiled. "Goodnight."
Rory returned the same and waved her father goodnight as she rushed upstairs.
Things were looking up.
She wanted that to last.
