CHAPTER ELEVEN — tape 6, side a
✧
Now
I'm standing in front of Kenz's microwave, waiting impatiently for the perfect time to pull out the bag of popcorn, when my phone goes off. It's a text from Justin asking me where I am. I let him know that I'm at Kenzie's and watch the three dots appear and then vanish. Weird. I start to text him again, but the popping stops, so I quickly pull the popcorn out. The heat from the bag burns my fingers and I throw it onto the counter. "That was dramatic." Sage laughs, entering the room. She pulls down a bowl and hands it to me, as I'm nursing my 'wounds.' The popcorn goes into the bowl and it looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. She goes to mix in milk duds with the salty snack and I stop her.
"Nope." I shake my head. "Absolutely disgusting. That's like putting ketchup on your eggs. You just don't do it."
"This is coming from the girl who enjoys dipping her french fries in her frosty anytime we eat Wendy's" She argues.
"That is delicious. And when I first heard that it was a thing, I thought it was gross. But truly do not knock it until you try it." I state. "And there's more popcorn. So, if you want to mix the sweet and salty, do it in your own batch." And with that I exit the room, sitting down in the nest of pillows and blankets we arranged on the floor. Kenz scootches closer and takes a handful of popcorn, shoving it into her mouth. Abbie puts on the first movie of the night, 'When in Rome.' A romcom starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhmel. Talk about great casting. And the movie's not too bad. We start with a romcom and end with a horror movie. Probably a very backwards way of watching things, especially since Sage and Abbie hate scary movies. I can tolerate them, but Kenzie adores them. We all make sure that our phones are on silent and I make a mental note to check on Justin tomorrow morning. Abs and Sage pass out before the first movie ends, so Kenz and I jump right to the horror movie. It's more of a thriller because we decided on 'Scream.' We're about halfway through the movie, when there's a knock on the door. I offer to get it, mentioning that I wanted a refill on my beverage. I open the door, revealing Jessica standing there. "Hey, uh, are you okay?"
"I need to talk to someone and you seem to be the only one who hasn't completely screwed me over." She breathes. I glance behind me and find Kenzie with her eyes glued to the tv screen. I gesture for us to talk outside and we sit on the front steps. "How could he do this to me?" Tears start to fall from her eyes and I move to wrap an arm around her, as she lays her head on my shoulder.
"I don't know, Jess." I respond somberly. "I really don't know."
"How, uh, how am I supposed to do this?"
"You just do. It's not gonna be easy, but you're not doing it alone." I state, lifting her face to look her in the eyes. "I'm here. I'll always be here. Whether you want to talk or not talk. If you want to commit a few crimes, I'll join. Anyway that you want to handle this, we can. Just say the word and I kill him. For all of us."
"You're not capable of murder, Ang."
"No, but I have a few goons wrapped around my finger that might be." We both laugh and it's nice. I haven't seen Jess smile like that in a long time. I stand up and hold my hand out to her. "Come on. We can wake my sister and Sage up, then continue this girls night. A night to forget, even for a little bit." She takes my hand and I help her to her feet, as we enter the house. Mack glances over and waves at Jess, before looking right back at the tv. She's seen this movie over a dozen times, yet will not pull her eyes from it. I love her. Jess follows me back into the kitchen and I pull out a couple of soda's, handing one to the brunette. The two of us make our way to the rest of the girls and I wake up the others. "I think it's time that our honorary member becomes a permanent one. What do you guys think?"
"I think that can be arranged." Sage smiles and everyone else agrees. "Alright, it's unanimous. Jessica Davis, you're officially instated into the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants."
