CHAPTER FOUR — tape 2, side b
✧
Now
I awoke to a text from Clay telling me that he survived the night and vowing to never drink again. Which is total bullshit and something many teenagers say after their first hangover. On a very different note, I love Halloween. It's my favorite holiday, but if I had known two months ago what my life would look like when it came around, I wouldn't have agreed to the group costume idea. Abbie, Mack, Sage, and I are entering the costume contest as different Taylor Swift eras. I am 'You Belong With Me', Sage is the 'Fearless' gold tour dress, Mack is the 'Speak Now' purple dress, and Abbie is the '1989 World Tour' white crop top with a bright skirt. It's a damn good costume idea; okay, fine, you got me. It was my idea and I'm very proud of it. Miss Swift is this friend groups lord and savior. I just don't want to dress up and go to school let alone dress up at all this year. I'm not in the right headspace. But I digress, I get off my ass and do this for my friends. We get to school and see everyone's costumes and let's just say, I think we got this in the bag. The day goes by very quickly. It's a holiday, so again our teachers don't care and in most cases we either watch movies or do some stupid Halloween themed word search. And finally it's time for the costume contest. It's down to my group, Justin and Jessica as Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, whatever the hell Bryce, Dempsey, and Alex are, and some fortune teller costume. "Okay, Okay, ladies and gentlemen. I think we have a winner. Angie, Sage, Abbie, and Mack as Taylor Swift!" Courtney announces. Mack and Abbie are a little too excited that we won. Sage and I just laugh and high five. Jess gives me a thumbs up paired with what seems to be a genuine smile when we catch each other's eyes. Whereas Justin walks over to me.
"Congrats. It's definitely well deserved. You guys look great. You look great." He compliments.
"Thanks. You don't look too bad yourself." I regret it because he's with Jess and attempt to remove the foot from my mouth. "You and Jess, both look amazing." We both turn back to our respective parties and that's that. We won and school ended. I headed home and immediately changed into sweats, prepared to take a nap and then spend the rest of the night watching Hocus Pocus and a slew of horror movies, while handing out candy. But people suck and someone interrupts my movie set up by knocking on the door. It's too early for even preschoolers to be walking the neighborhood, so I'm at a loss for who it could be. Surprisingly, none other than Justin Foley was standing on my front step. Shit. I guess I did tell him whenever he needed me, I was here, but like come on. "Hey, come in. Are you okay?" I ask.
"Yeah, I'm good." I'm about to ask why he's here, but he answers that question. "Actually, no. I mean yes I'm fine, but I'm also not. Listen, what happened earlier at the contest-"
"Uh yeah, it was a weird exchange, but it's all good. We really don't need to talk about it." I try to avoid a conversation that's gonna get us into trouble.
"I think we do. Ang, I still have feelings for you. Okay, deep feelings. And I care about Jess, but I can't ignore this anymore." He confesses. Fuck. What the hell am I supposed to do now? "Evangeline? Hello, anyone there?" He waved his hand in front of my face.
"I really don't know what you want me to say, Justin." I half-lie. I know what I want to say, but I know that I can't say it. His face drops and I can see anger and frustration fill his eyes. Well, this is gonna be a good time.
"You don't know what to say? Well, what the fuck do you want to say?" He snaps. Here we go.
"I'm not going to be the reason you leave Jess. I won't tell you to end your relationship. No matter what I feel." I tell him.
"What do you feel? I'm not doing this shit, Ang. Just tell me. Stop thinking about everyone else's feelings for once. Be selfish. You owe yourself that much." Justin pushes. I'm looking at my shoes like they're the most interesting things in the world. Justin grabs my chin and makes me look at him. "What do you want?" He asks a question I'm unfamiliar with. Having a twin sister who's naturally more likable than you isn't exactly a cake walk. Especially, when Justin's right I care about other people's feelings more than my own, I can't help it.
"You." Dumb bitch. Why did I just say that? I step away from him. "Fuck. I didn't say that. You heard nothing, You're gonna leave and go back to your girlfriend and we're gonna forget that this conversation ever happened." Justin stands there, smiling at me. I want to punch that stupid, beautiful smile of his off his stupid face. "I mean it, Foley. Go." He doesn't move.
"No." He starts walking towards me. "I'm not going anywhere until you hear me say it."
"Justin." I warn.
"You need to hear it. Once. So shut your cute, stubborn ass up and let me finish." Justin cradles my face and pauses, just looking at me, "I love you. I always have." My eyes dart back and forth from his deep blue eyes to his slightly chapped lips.
"Fuck it." I put my hands on the back of his neck and smash our lips together. Justin's hand slowly made its way into my hair. I pull away, before things escalate any further. My eyes remain closed, unable to open them for a moment. As I opened them, they met Justin's and the biggest smile broke onto my face. I wrap my arms around his neck and rest my head in the crook of it. We stay like that for a while. Enjoying being in one another's arms. I hear the front door handle jiggle. Abbie. I pull away quickly and hop on the couch pressing play. "Hey, while you're up, can you grab me a soda?" I ask Justin; who just caught onto what I was doing.
"Yeah, sure. Hey, Abs." Justin greets before going to the kitchen. She waves and darts upstairs. He comes out of the kitchen with two sodas and chips in hand. "Where'd she go?" I just point to the stairs and press play on Hocus Pocus. My legs are draped over his thighs and his hands rest on my knees. He. Has. A. Girlfriend. God, I am such a dumbass. We watch a few horror movies and I order a pizza. "You mind if I spend the night? I can go back to Bryce's, I just figured it'd be easier." He asks.
"Of course you can spend the night. But until you figure out the Jessica situation, this is the only time it'll happen and you're sleeping in the guest room." He rolls his eyes.
"HaHa. Very funny." He looks at my face, which is expressionless. "Oh, you're serious. Well, okay then." We continue switching off who hands out candy to trick or treaters, eat pizza, and watch movies until we both crash on the couch. So much for the guest room comment. I'm awoken to the sound of my phone going off an excessive amount. Mine's not the only one going off a lot, Justin's is blowing up as well.
"Holy shit." I say looking at the picture Clay sent to just about the entire school. Justin had woken and is now looking at his phone too. I send a quick text to our "Batman."
Nicely done, Clay :))
"Fucking Clay. You're so done. You're so fucking done." he says to mainly himself. I ignore it and put my phone back down and start to fall back asleep. "Goodnight, dork."
I mumble slightly, "Who the fuck you calling a dork, bitch." He laughs and kisses my forehead. After that I was out.
