Damon's P.O.V
The archives.
Our pack's history was all here, shoved into books of all shapes and sizes with varying ages for any curious enough to explore them. There were also the books that almost every pack had, books that held all the secrets and interworkings of our species throughout their pages. Amongst those, there were the generic specie's history books that most wolves studied as pups and forgot soon after.
The archives were organised by year and species through an unnecessarily complex system, littered throughout various spaces of the pack library and easy to miss amongst the millions of books collected here. Most wolves relied on a worker to locate the materials they were looking for, but I didn't bother looking for one as I lead Will through the library.
I knew all parts of this place better than most. Dad had made sure of that, only waiting until I'd uttered my first syllables to give me a personal tour of his favourite place throughout all the pack lands.
We all spent many days and nights here when we were growing up, whether by choice or by force, no pack members knew the library like the Heils and Calderons.
"I wish I could see it all," Will starts mindlessly, mouth agape as he scanned the beautiful space with those stunning eyes, "but from what I can make out, this place is magnificent."
"You just won yourself a lifetime's supply of brownie points with dad," I reply making him smile a little as he gained enough control of his mouth to close it.
We'd agreed to spend the day in the archives, starting the journey of learning as much as we could about human-werewolf mates. There was no doubt a shitload of information to get through, only a fraction of which would be here and actually relevant to us, but making a start was what was important.
I'd offered to come alone, gather as many books as my arms could carry and bring them back to the suite for the two of us to study together in the comfort of our own space. Not because I gave a damn about the eyes that tracked us curiously, but because I knew Will would and I didn't want him to panic with a space I knew to always be occupied by other wolves.
But Will surprised both me and Theo when he said that he, in fact, wanted to come with me, and not only get the books but read them in the library itself.
"You can't babysit me every day, I know you have other things to do beyond seeing your family. So I need to get used to this place so I'm not having a break down every time I step out the door."
That had been Will's quick and confident response when I asked him about the sudden change. It had only served to make me even more shocked but it also filled my chest with complete awe and pride at how strong he really was.
I knew how it scared him being here, his heart rate spiked every time we left the suite and didn't ever completely settle back to its usual pace until we returned. But despite all his fears and even with his past experiences that had developed this heavy sense of mistrust he carried, he was trying and that was one of the bravest things I'd ever witnessed.
"If I want to keep you, which I do and will, then I have to get as comfortable with your home as I am with you." He'd continued with a smile so pure it hurt to have it directed my way. "I hope you realise how much I love you, I'm voluntarily leaving my bed for you."
I look down at Will now, his wide eyes taking in as much of his surroundings as he could, too enamoured to take note of all the people scattered around the large library. They were looking at the both of us, some wearing the same stunned look Hagen had when he first saw us together.
But most eyes were on Will.
Here was a little human who was by now known as my mate, walking with me in the middle of our pack with a look of childish innocence plastered all over his face. They were taking in the person who would be there future Luna... or perhaps Alpha, he'd decide whichever title he prefered.
If he chooses the role - Theo inputs, his words a cruel reminder to my mind that had been running much further ahead than where we were currently at.
I think, with time, he will - I reply while trying to pump some form of confidence into my words. He was made to do it, just as I was.
That doesn't mean he will take the path set out for him - Theo replies gently as if to soften a blow that hurt anyway. I'm not saying he'll reject the role of Luna, I'm just reminding you that it is a possibility. One that you should prepare yourself for if it comes.
Okay - I reply despite how my body ached at the thought of Will walking away from the pack like that.
Yet I knew Theo was right, I was getting ahead of myself, especially when I wasn't even alpha yet and had no desire of broaching that subject area with my parents anytime soon.
I had a plan, a simple plan. Fix things with my family, help Will get used to and hopefully grow to love the supernatural world and hate the human one and then worry about the big A-job.
"Here we are," I say as I slow beneath the section of works that held most human-related materials. We both look up at the towering aisles that were packed with books, a tired groan pulling from Will while I frown at them all. "This will have most of the books on your stupid species."
"You have to get over the fact that I'm human," Will replies humourlessly before he looks back to the books. "All these books are about human and werewolf mates?"
"No, it'll contain different subjects but it's mostly about the war and times before," I reply looking down just in time to find a frown forming on Will's face. "Not World War 2 or 1 or any of the wars in your history books actually. There was a Great War between mainly werewolves and humans, ran on for decades before other species stepped in and helped end it while bleaching the history books completely of its presence."
"Wait...." Will says while blinking rapidly. " wait, wait.........what?"
"They say there wasn't a winner, but we all know the wolves one," I say with a proud smile he ignores.
"You're telling me there was a huge war between two species and one of the species involved, humans, don't even know about it?" Will asks completely bewildered, his nose crinkling in a cute manner that made me want to kiss it, but I control myself.
"Pretty much, yeah,"
"How is that even possible?" Will asks with clear interest, his blue eyes practically sparkling as he looks at me. "To erase an entire war, surely some people remembered and didn't just forget about it one day?"
"The elves were the ones who stepped in, they're pretty powerful in their own right so erasing some memories here and there probably wasn't even hard for them," I reply thoughtfully, I'd read on the war multiple times but how the elves actually erased a whole war from existence was never in the history pages. "That was the first time they played a hand in species affairs that didn't concern them and the last."
Will narrows his eyes with suspicion as he takes in my words, that brain of his taking it all in before popping out another question.
"How do you know that was the last time?" He asks in a gentle whisper as if speaking any louder would summon an elf here. "Or the first for that matter? If they can erase memories so easily, books, articles and all photographs just like that, on such a large scale too - what's to say they didn't do it before and to werewolves too?"
My eyebrows pull together as I digest his words and the doors that they opened if they were true. New realities and forgotten past ones come into play making my brain buzz too loud for me so I quickly shut the doors close.
"They didn't," I reply but that look doesn't leave his face.
"How do you know for sure?" He presses making my brain hurt.
"Stop that," I say shaking my head and he laughs. "We came here to look for things about us not to create shit conspiracy theories."
"You're just mad I could be right and you didn't think about it first," He shoots back before he sticks his tongue out. "And I don't know shit about this war but I think it's safe to say that humans won it since we're not the ones hiding our entire existence."
With that Will takes a step forward and trails his fingers against the binds of the books he could reach, examining the first set of books directly in front of us while leaving me to contemplate the nonsense he'd managed to fabricate in only a few minutes.
I decide not to respond.
Instead, I step into place beside him and begin to look for any and all books that could possibly be helpful to us.
We develop a hefty stack, not willing to overlook anything, and make a few trips back and forth to an empty table, tucked away in the back of the pack library.
"Do you want me to scan through the books and read out the important parts for you or read it all aloud?" I ask Will while pulling out his chair for him.
His response falters on his tongue as he sits down with a big grin on his face.
I watch amused and enraptured as his cheeks and ears heat up quickly while I push his chair in.
"Scan it and read out the important parts, it'll be quicker." He replies as I slip into my own seat beside him.
When I look at him, I immediately frown at the gap between our seats, the distance too wide for my liking.
You're actually whipped for life - Theo comments with an amused chuckle that has me rolling my eyes.
"What?" Will asks carefully, with a frown of his own rapidly forming.
Instead of replying, I reach down and grip the edge of his seat before tugging it towards me. With our seats practically glued together and Will's warmth brushing me in the best way, I smile at him.
"You're such a big baby," Will teases while leaning forward to give me a kiss. Sparks ripple through me while I hum my appreciation just before he pulls away. "But I love you anyway."
Unable to resist, I kiss him again. I'd meant for it to be a brief, quick one but my heart ached at the thought of pulling away so I kiss him harder.
Will's hum of surprise at the feel of my tongue slipping between his lips easily turns into a moan the moment his meets mine. With fingers circling his small waist I pull him into me as my canines descend and my chest burns with the need to have more of him.
A disgruntled mix between a moan and a whimper slips from me as he runs his tongue up the length of each of my canines before pulling away.
"We're in a library," Will says slightly breathless, a small smile on his lips as he looks up at me with a gentle hand on my chest and. "Let's get to doing what we came here for."
"Fine," I mumble, pulling myself away from his beautiful warmth to look at the first book.
I skim the title with my eyes before opening the thick book. Will leans forward, wrapping his hands around my arm before he rests his head on my shoulder.
"Comfortable?" I tease.
"Very," He replies. "Now start reading."
Needing no further instructions, I listen to my mate and dive into the old book. The pages weren't worn, tainted or stained, but they did speak of an age that came before our time.
It wasn't long before I was turning pages, quickly slipping into that wistful state that only existed with reading.
That perfect feeling of sinking into the pages before me while letting everything else around me fade to nothing but a silent noise.
All while I immerse myself into the ink on the several pages of paper which teamed up with my imagination to create a picture in my mind.
I always liked reading.
From the moment dad stopped reading them aloud for me and taught me how to contact a story for myself, it became a favourite of mine.
But then, I'd stopped and I went on without that feeling.
It wasn't until recently, when I was in that little town with nothing but me, my thoughts and Will, that I'd revisited what it was like to read.
It was just as perfect as I remembered.
"Humans who become part of a pack, whether by mating or other means, can engage in a partial shift." I read out when my eyes snag on a line of interest four pages deep. "This is limited to the ability to develop canines and talons. With the bite of the alpha, this shift can take place."
I look to Will with wide eyes, the new information sparking wonder in my chest while Will simply looks up at me with a look of disinterest.
"At the moment, I don't think that's something I want." He says honestly, blinking a few times before continuing. "You said that shit hurt right? Yeah, unnecessary pain is not the one for me. I'm happy to stick as a counterproductive member of my shitty species, thanks."
"That wasn't what you were saying when I told you I couldn't make you a werewolf," I reply with a smile that morphs into a chuckle when his expression drops with the reminder.
Will was a happy, interested student the entire time I taught him about my species and my world in the confines of our apartments.
That was until I told him that it was impossible for him to be a werewolf.
His interest to learn about the supernatural remained, though slightly dwindled, while his enthusiasm almost died out completely.
"And I think the pain is a small price to pay for something that you can use to protect yourself." I continue, voicing the first thoughts that came to my mind. "We all learn to fight in that form, and so can you."
"I mean, that's true," Will says slowly as he thinks on it. "But you already know how I feel about those talons of yours and I'll probably poke a hole in my tongue with canines."
"Will,"
"What? It's true," He replies lifting his head to look at me properly. "And can you actually imagine what I'd look like with my own pair of canines."
My brain doesn't waste any time slowly patching together an image of Will as he was now, looking at me with blue eyes I adored and all his attention.
Only with the slight adjustment of his lips parted slightly to adjust to the canines that could be there.
My cock pulses with interest at the image before thickening when I'm provided with a new image of with a naked, canined Will straddling me...riding me...
I swallow before replying, not daring to reach down and adjust myself. "I-I don't think it would look bad."
Will's eyes narrow suspiciously as he looks at me, a single eyebrow-raising when I swallow again.
Understanding comes too quickly and Will begins to laugh, loudly.
"I think you'd like it a little too much," Will replies through his laughter. "You literal dirty dog."
I pull my arm free of his hold when he begins laughing again, stuck somewhere between embarrassed and content with his laughter.
I could only thank Goddess he couldn't see my semi.
You did not just say that... - Theo comments sounding horrified.
No! No! Fuck, not like that! - I argue desperately. I meant that he hadn't actually seen it.
....sure.
"Okay I'm done teasing," Will says completely oblivious to the words I'd just shared with Theo. "Let's leave it in a maybe box for now." He continues before kissing my cheek and reattaching himself to me. "Keep reading."
Happy to stray from the topic, I dive back into the pages of the book before us, finding little else of interest beyond general information about humans who were integrated into packs and some of the effects that could have. Little of which seriously applied to Will, he wouldn't have to be concerned with the topic of finding a rank or climbing them, he already had one waiting for him.
"Human lives are known to extend when mated, but only as long as their partner," I read out from the fifth book that was much smaller than the rest but seemed to have the most relevant information to our situation. "They can not live a day past their mate. So when I go out, so do you." I finish with a grin and Will snorts.
"Sounds about right," He whispers while snuggling in a little closer, we'd shifted to a position where he was tucked into my side, my left arm around him keeping him close. "I wouldn't want to go out any other way, just try not to die too early. I'm not really trying to die at thirty."
"I'll do my best," I reply before reading on. "Mated humans carry the scent of their partner to all other wolves but their mates themselves. Instead of mixing scents like with a usual pair of werewolves, the human only carries their mate scent. However, reports show that their original scent remains that same to their mate only."
"So when we 'mate', everyone is just going to recognise me as you by their noses?" Will asks after a few silent seconds pass by.
"I guess," I reply unsurely, it sounded perfect to me but also like it could make things unnecessarily confusing in the future. "It could be both good and bad."
"How bad?"
"Well, underlying our scents are our ranks and I'm an alpha wolf," I explain as simply as I can. "Other wolves will react with respect mostly, but it could bring trouble with other alphas and rogues who see it as a challenge to them."
Will doesn't say anything in response, only hums gently before giving me a little poke that I'd come to realise as the signal to keep reading.
I continue the cycle of reading the many pages as quickly as I can, only stopping to share things of interest with my mate. When we approached our sixth book with the late afternoon sun illuminating our private, little corner and a soft yawn escapes my mate, I close the book deciding we'd done more than enough for today.
"Tired?" Will asks through another yawn as I pull him into my lap.
"Yeah," I reply while I hold his sleepy face in both my hands. "I think we've learned enough for today."
"Me too," Will replies while he leans into my touch, his body curling into mine while his eyes fluttered shut. "We can take a nap and then get up for dinner, do you want me to make something or do you want to eat with your family?"
"Depends, what would you make?" I ask and Will's skin tightens just a little under my fingers as he thinks, eyes still closed as he let himself get lost in my touch.
I never tired of touching him. Especially since I knew just how special it was to be able to share this with him, not only as mates but because it was a sign of trust between us. Will didn't trust easy and to know that he trusted me, to be reminded of his unwavering trust every day by just being able to feel his smooth skin against mine was something I would never be able to take for granted.
"I can do chicken alfredo," He offers after a moment or two, opening one of those stunning blue eyes to catch my reaction. "I'll even make that creamy, garlic sauce you like." A smile pulls at the ends of Will's lips before he even finishes his sentence, my pending reaction letting him know how much I loved that idea.
"Fuck yes," I reply with more of a moan than a groan and Will's smile grows as he releases a small giggle.
"And you're sure you're okay with not eating with your family again?" He asks carefully, offering like he always did, to give me space to spend time with them.
"I'm sure," I reply, thumbing his cheek gently as I stayed a willing prisoner under his gaze. "We've eaten with them every day this week, one night with us would be nice... like when we first met."
Will's gaze turns reminiscent then as we both relive our earlier days together, where we'd spend our evenings talking and cooking. Getting to know one another with nothing or no one to disturb us, judge us or dismantle what we were building. With the eyes of one of our pets on us and one of Will's favourite records playing in the background, it was literal perfection bottled in time.
"Sometimes I miss that little town," Will reveals sounding a little sad. "Of course I'm happy for you, that you're slowly fixing things with your family and your home... but sometimes I miss just having you all to myself in that apartment where I got to learn every little thing about you one step at a time."
I knew exactly what Will meant, felt that little tug in my chest when I thought about the life we'd created together in those five months. That life that seemed like a dream looking back at it from the real world, it was perfect and simple, and I could never thank Goddess enough for giving me that platform to fall in love with the man before me.
"I do too," I reply truthfully as that small tug pulls at my chest once more.
Soaking in the harmonious warmth of our earlier days, we don't say anything else for a few minutes. We just fill the space with one another, Will tucking himself into my chest, his head against my neck while I breathed in his presence.
Quietly, we relive the dream we found in our darkest times.
With time, we pull apart and gather the books we hadn't covered today, putting back the ones we'd made our way through and any too heavy for us to carry back to the suite.
We make our way out the library side by side, with light hearts and small smiles.
My heart thumps just a little harder when my eyes catch sight of the lanterns alining the length of the road leading back to the suite. I look with pride and thankfulness at the natural light that my dad had implemented throughout the pack, just as they'd promised.
Makeshift poles were constructed of tree vines and adorned with flowers by earth witches, leading us to a small, ball of fire that burned continuously as some spell directed. To wolf eyes, it was like a little light bulb in the sky, but to human eyes', it was as bright as a street light.
Will held his tears the first time he saw them, held them in his eyes all the way to our suite before he let them fall and broke down in my arms.
He still didn't know how to react to acts of kindness from people he didn't know, still felt guilty for thinking there was a trick to follow but still couldn't hide how much it meant to him to receive a form of care from another.
He just needed a little time, time and love and one day all his bruises would heal.
As we step out the elevator, my steps falter when I lay eyes on Levi standing directly outside the suite door as if about to knock. He freezes when our eyes meet, small bags constructed of clear guilt and nerves dragging the black oculi down slightly.
I freeze as well, not sure how to act or what to say with him standing here without the rest of the family. We hadn't gotten anyone on one time together since Will and I returned to the pack, and that had been done purposefully since I'd been avoiding all his attempts to talk.
It wasn't that I didn't want to speak to him or planned to ignore him forever, I was just scared to.
"Levi?" Will guesses unsurely, filling the silence with a nervous giggle.
"Yeah, it's me," He replies quickly making Will's body relax a little. "I came to see if I could speak to Damon."
"Oh," Will says and I feel his eyes on me for a second before he looks back to Levi.
"Can we talk for a bit Damon?" Levi asks, his voice sounding both shy and mindful. "I can make it short if you're busy," He says, his eyes trailing down to the stacks of books in our hands before climbing back to mine, "but I really do need to speak to you."
I nod before I can conjure up an excuse of some kind.
"Okay. Yeah, um sure," I manage before I turn slightly to face Will who was panting gently, the stack of books in his hands clearly a bit more than what his body signed up for. "You good to start dinner on your own? I can take Sassy with us, she'll need to walk."
"Yeah that's fine," Will replies with that one smile that told me he'd be waiting for me when we were done, no matter the outcome.
Unlocking the door, we set down our books and Will leashes an excited Sassy before coming over to me. Her excitement immediately plummets the way it always did when he handed over the leash to me and she gave me a distinct look that said that my presence and existence brought her nothing but misery.
"Love you," Will whispers before pressing onto the ends of his toes to give me a kiss.
"I love you too," I reply against his lips before pulling away.
With a miserable dog and an overrun heart, I make my way out of the suite to face Levi.
This would be fine... it had to be.
----------------------
I love Will so much, he's just so... perfect.
Thoughts????????????
What did we think of the new info about human-wolf mates??? Any questions, I can answer them in the books maybe.
Let me know what you're thinking in the comments and vote up if you enjoyed.
Hope you like the next part.
