Chapter 8

Just as Lucy entered through the door in the middle of nowhere, it shut behind her, causing her to jump slightly. Well, guess there's no going back now, she thought. She took a deep breath and walked through the hall of what appeared to be a very posh mansion. It looked like one of those fancy mansions rich people in England lived in, in and around the suburbs because those kinds of houses in the middle of London? Hell no.

She found a staircase in front of her as she slowly made her way upstairs. Her throat was a little dry, no doubt from the fear. It was a long climb for an invisible house in the middle of nowhere.

Invisible people? Mansions? Book of spells? Oh wait, this is Narnia, this is a regular Tuesday for me. Lucy thought and chuckled to herself, which quickly disappeared when her voice reverberated off the walls of an eerily empty mansion. She gulped as she continued to climb the stairs. Finally she reached the top and found a long hallway, so long, she couldn't quite make out the end of it.

I'd imagine those dumb invisible creatures didn't want to come here cause of all the walking. I mean I don't blame them. Lucy wondered to herself. She walked down the long hallway, finding a doorway to another room at the end. There was a podium in the middle of the room, and the room was dimly illuminated. It had an ominous feel to it for some reason, as Lucy felt her nerves creep in as she walked through the doorway. The sides of the room appeared to have bookshelves, and ornate engravings on the walls, as well as detailed designs on the floors. She came closer to the podium, where she found a large book with jumbled gold letters on them. There was a scroll on the side of the book, which she tried to unclasp, to no avail. An engraving of an angel blew some air through its horn at the corner, which Lucy took note of. She then blew on the letters on the book which then rearranged themselves to form coherent words.

'The Book of Incantations'. Lucy smiled as the letters came together, some drawings forming on the cover in the process. She unclasped the book and perused the pages, finding multiple spells. Her eyes fell upon a spell to create snow. Piquing her interest, her eyes scanned the two black pages, 4 lines written in white ink at the corner of the first page. Curiosity got the best of her as she began to read the spell.

'With these words, your tongue must sew, for all around there to be snow.' She read. Her eyes travelled to the next page where she found something small and white falling on the black page. Lucy's eyes widened when she realised what it was as it melted into the page.

Snow.

She looked up and found snow falling from the ceiling, as the ground below her was full of snow, almost like a wintry scene in London. Lucy smiled brightly as she realised the spell actually worked, as she looked around the snow covered room.

Damn so this works? Wait, why am I surprised? Lucy squinted as she talked to herself.

She turned around to get a better look at the room, blinking as snow fell on her eyelids. She turned back to the book, to see it covered in snow. She took a deep breath and blew the snow off, causing all the pages to rapidly turn by themselves.

Okayyy what is happening? I didn't do anything. Lucy thought.

Just as the pages kept turning, quickly and loudly, she slammed her hand on one of the pages, causing the turning to stop. Immediately, the snow disappeared, and she was back in the dimly lit room of the mansion. She didn't seem to notice the green mist that was edging out from under the pages of the book. Lucy looked around the room, warily. A troubled look was on her face, as she turned back to the book. She observed the two pages, squinting in the process. The page on the left had a picture of an ornate mirror, with words written on it in calligraphy. The page on the right had a similar mirror-like structure, with a picture of a woman inside it.

'An infallible spell, to make you she. The beauty you've always wanted to be.' Lucy read, as her eyes travelled to the next page. The picture of the woman in the mirror faded away, as it became a mirror. Lucy found her reflection changing into that of Susan. She looked surprised as she wondered what Susan was doing there.

'Susan! What's going...' Lucy trailed off. '...on?'

She realised it was her own reflection, that she was Susan.

Lucy touched the side of her face, to try and ensure that it was her reflection.

'I'm beautiful.' She breathed, feeling happy and excited. The smile suddenly left her face, as she walked away towards a mirror at the side of the room, to make sure this wasn't a dream. Seeing her old reflection deflated her. She walked back towards the book, and found the mirror in it fading back to the picture of the woman.

'No! Wait.' Lucy yelled, as she slammed her hand on the page. She looked at the top of the page where similar words to the spell were written.

'Make me she, whom I'd agree...' She trailed off, as she gently tore the page out. Just as she did, the pages turned again at a rapid pace, but this time, a loud roar was also heard. Lucy jumped back at the sight, just as someone called her name.

'Lucy! Lucy..' The voice was familiar, and there was a hint of disappointment.

'Aslan? Aslan!' Lucy called out, just as the rustling of pages stopped. She hid the torn page inside her shirt, as she perused the words on the pages.

'The spell to make the unseen, seen.'

***********

Caspian and Raina led the charge, as they looked for Lucy. Edmund was distracted by Raina's screams from earlier, as he lost himself in thought. At one point, Raina turned around, confused at the sight.

'Earth to Ed?' She asked, as Edmund shook himself. He was viewing Raina in a completely different light, as he felt some frustration and anger bubble in him. He kept a straight face.

'Sorry sorry, just a little dazed.' He explained. Raina could sense the tenseness in his jaw as he spoke, and she realised he wasn't being honest. She didn't have time to question it.

'Alright..' She replied, her voice a little unsure. She caught up with Caspian some paces ahead, leaving Edmund wondering what was going on with her. He couldn't get those thoughts out of his head. He blindly believed everything she told him, and now he wondered if it was a mistake and if she was hiding something.

Raina and Caspian looked around, as did the rest of the crew. Edmund caught up with them, as they observed the vast grasslands with rolling hills in the distance. The sky was light, signalling that it was the early hours of the morning. The landscape was bland, nothing stuck out. Raina walked further ahead, and kept her hand on the hilt of her sword. She looked down and noted something glinting in the early morning sun. The edge was golden, with a lion's head, and Raina's eyes widened as she realised what it was. She quickly ran over and picked up the object. Her suspicions were confirmed.

'Guys?' She called out, warily, as Caspian and Edmund came up next to her.

'Lucy's dagger.' Edmund breathed as he took it from Raina's hands, looking over it. His eyebrows were creased in worry, as Caspian observed the lands.

All of a sudden, Raina felt a strange sensation in her left hand. She lifted it up to see the pearl in her mother's ring glowing with a red light. She felt the same sensation she felt the first time in Narnia, when she saved Trumpkin.

It was a warning that danger is close by.

Just then Raina noticed spears hovering in the air some distance away, ready to strike the crew. With great effort she summoned her power, her palms glowed with the blue light.

'EVERYONE TAKE COVER!' She screamed, just as the spears whizzed at them. The crew took to the ground, as Raina threw up a glowing shield, which created a ringing noise, keeping the crew out of the line of fire. The spears banged against the shield, and they fell to the ground. The shield fizzled moments later, as Raina heaved from exhaustion. Her chest began to burn, as her head pounded. She somehow steadied herself, and unsheathed her swords, levelling it in front of her, as did Edmund and Caspian and the rest of the crew.

'Blimey, they got the Goddess with them too??' A voice spoke out of thin air. Raina looked around frantically trying to figure out where the voice came from.

'Who are you?!' She yelled, as she stumbled forward. She was the supreme ruler of Narnia, under Aslan, and it was her duty to be on the frontlines. Caspian and Edmund stood by her side.

'Stop right there or perish!' A deep voice boomed. All the crew members had their swords brandished, when suddenly some invisible force knocked their swords to the ground and appeared to be hitting them as well. They were being manhandled by some invisible creatures from the looks of it. Raina noticed Caspian and Edmund being thrown around, just as she felt someone grab her hair.

'Hey!' She screeched as she was lifted into the air, her roots singing with pain. Maniacal laughter filled the air as she thrashed about.

'This is the Goddess of Narnia? She's puny..' A voice spoke again. Raina's vision flashed red, as did another Royal's, whose brown eyes seemed to darken with anger. Raina decided she'd had enough, as she summoned her power again, her eyes turning blue, and freed herself by slamming her glowing palms against whatever or whoever was holding her.

'Talk about me like that and I will bury you so deep, no one will ever know you existed!' She seethed.

Her body began to glow, as she threw bouts of power at the invisible creatures, trying to push them away. She smiled, satisfied once she heard some yelps of agony and pain, as the thumps of footsteps went further away. Caspian was still on the ground as Edmund scrambled to his feet, sword in hand. Raina's palms kept glowing, even as she heaved from exhaustion, and her breaths were more like wheezing.

'What sort of creatures are you?!' Caspian asked, looking around, frantically.

'Big ones!' A deep voice spoke.

'With the head of a tiger, and the body of a..'

'Different tiger!'

The air suddenly rippled, as some creatures were coming into being. Raina squinted as she noted the creatures were the exact opposite of what they described themselves to be. So many insults were formulating in her head. The glow in her palms dissipated as her vision went blurry for several moments. She felt blood run down her nose, as her vision swam in and out of focus. She was losing a grip on herself, just as Edmund wrapped an arm around her waist to steady her, eyes widening at the sight of her bloody nose.

'You don't want to mess with us!' One of the weird creatures spoke. They were the size of dwarves, fashioning the long beards, except they only had one massive leg, hence the large footprints.

'Or what?' Edmund taunted.

'Or I'll claw you to death!' One of the creatures spoke, now completely visible. Two of these one-legged creatures hoisted another above them. The ones on top hefted long, thick sticks and spears.

'I'll ram my tuffs right through you!'

'And I'll gnash you, with my teeth!'

'And I'll bite you with my fangs! Argh!'

The creatures threw out all sorts of threats. However, no one seemed to be afraid, it was quite an amusing sight. Raina being Raina, despite her bleeding nose, pounding head and all-round exhaustion, was about to fire off a witty remark when Edmund beat her to it.

'You mean squash us? With your fat bellies?' Edmund joked, as Caspian stood up and held in a snort, as did the rest of the crew.

'Yes! Yes!' The creatures dumbly agreed, but stopped when they realised what he said. Raina, still exhausted, rounded on Edmund.

'Had to step on my moment there, didn't you?' She huffed. Edmund gave her an innocent look and shrugged.

'You take opportunities as they present themselves.'
