Chapter 4

The sun was setting by the time the Dawn Treader approached the Lone Islands. Caspian observed it by looking through his telescope.

'The Lone Islands. The port of Narrowhaven.' Drinian stated.

'Strange.' Caspian said. 'Not a Narnian Flag in sight.'

'But the Lone Islands have always been Narnia's.' Edmund argued, as he took the telescope from Caspian, observing the islands himself. It looked abandoned. Raina came up next to him.

'Seems suspicious.' Drinian warned.

'I say we prepare a landing party. Drinian?' Edmund proposed. Drinian looked down.

'Forgive me, your majesty, but the chain of command starts with King Caspian and Queen Raina on this ship.' Drinian stated, bashfully. Raina looked surprised.

'Right.' Edmund replied.

'Uh..why me?' She asked, confused. Caspian turned to her.

'You're High Queen of Narnia. You have supreme authority over Narnia as the direct descendent of Aslan. Also you're kind of a Goddess.' Caspian mused. Raina's eyes widened slightly before flitting over to Edmund. She and him had the same thought.

'Let's check it out. Drinian?' Raina turned to Edmund first, who nodded and gave her a grateful smile. She then turned to Caspian, who nodded. He turned to Drinian.

'We'll use longboats. Drinian, pick some men, and come ashore.' Caspian ordered as Drinian nodded.

'Aye, Tavros?' Drinian turned to the minotaur. He nodded and turned to the crew.

'Man the longboats! Furl the sails, and prepare to drop anchor!' Tavros boomed as the crew busied themselves.

Soon, Raina, Caspian, Edmund, Lucy, Reepicheep and surprisingly, Eustace were in one boat, along with some more men, as they rowed to the shore. Reepicheep piped up.

'Onward! The thrill of the unknown lies ahead.' He said, joyfully as the boat came to a stop at the shore.

'Couldn't this wait until morning?' Eustace grumbled.

'There's no honour in turning away from adventure, lad.' Reepicheep replied, as Eustace scowled.

Caspian and Edmund got off first, the former hefting a crossbow over his shoulder while the latter kept his hand on the hilt of his sword. Raina and Lucy got off soon after. Raina suddenly tripped and was about to go sprawling on the rocky land, had it not been for Edmund catching her by her waist, securely. She met his eyes and took a shaky breath.

'Th-thanks.' She mumbled as she steadied herself.

'Anytime.' Edmund replied, smiling bashfully. Someone gagged, as Raina and Edmund turned to see Eustace on the boat, a disgusted look on his face. Raina looked at him, pointedly. His demeanour changed soon after. Edmund eyed Raina, curiously.

'I've never been able to shut him up.' He confessed. Raina chuckled.

'Listen.' Lucy began. 'Where is everyone?' Her hand going to her long dagger.

Meanwhile Eustace struggled to get off the boat, as Reepicheep intercepted him.

'Come on, jellylegs.' He joked and reached a hand out to Eustace, as he scowled.

'I'm capable of doing it myself.' He responded, angrily, just as he went sprawling on the rocky ground, yelping in the process. Reepicheep sighed and rolled his eyes.
This caught the royals' attention as they threw annoyed glances his way.

'And you're certain he's related by blood?' Caspian asked.

'I was just going to ask that myself.' Raina commented.

The silence was deafening. Not a single sound was heard. Some seagulls flew by, just as a loud sound of a bell was heard, catching everyone off-guard. Raina and Edmund hurriedly unsheathed their swords, Lucy unsheathed her dagger while Caspian levelled his crossbow at the bell tower where the sound may have come from.

'Reepicheep..' Caspian began. 'Stay with Drinian's men and secure the place. We'll head on. If we don't come back by dawn, send a party.' Caspian stated.

'Yes, your majesty.' Reepicheep responded and scurried away. Raina and Caspian walked forward, Edmund and Lucy trailing behind, and even further back, Eustace scuttled along.

The land was completely uninhabited. The silence sent shivers down Raina's spine, as she unsheathed both her swords. They walked through an abandoned town, not a single human in sight. It looked like a picture out of a dystopian novel. Caspian's eyes fell upon a large double doored entrance to the bell tower, the place where the loud sound was heard from earlier. He turned to Raina, Lucy and Edmund and gestured to the tower. They nodded and slowly approached. No one seemed to notice Eustace break away from the group, and peep inside a house through a crack in the shutters. He observed a family of 4, huddled together in fear from the looks of it. He pulled away and turned to the others who were some distance away from him.

'Yeah looks like nobody's in,' Eustace hurriedly spoke. 'Do you think we should head back?' His voice seemed to tremble.

Raina and Edmund exchanged glances, while Caspian and Lucy observed the haughty boy, now trembling like a leaf.

'Do you want to come here and guard..' Edmund proposed, unsure. 'Something?'

'Ah yes!' Eustace responded, as he bounded over. 'Good idea cousin. Very...logical.' He agreed.

Just before they headed in, Caspian walked over to Eustace, holding out one of his daggers, which the latter took, timidly.

'I've got it, I've got it. Don't worry!' Eustace tried to sound reassuring to the others, when it appeared he was trying to reassure himself. Raina observed him warily.

'Stay close to the door. Keep your eyes out. Don't hesitate to call for help.' Raina said to him, in a kind, reassuring tone. Eustace seemed to relax at that. He nodded, gratefully.

The 4 of them head inside the tower, warily keeping an eye out. It was dark, except for some stray rays of light coming in through open crevices. Statues lined the walls. There appeared to be ropes? Hanging from the ceiling, with bells attached to them. Just as they observed the tower, Eustace called out again.

'I-I'm ready to go when you are!'

Edmund shook his head, dismissively, as he turned his torch on to get a better look. Raina and Lucy walked forward, and found a large book open. Caspian and Edmund joined them. There were names written on it, with numbers next to them. Some names were crossed out.

'Who are these people?' Raina asked.

'Why have their names been crossed out?' Edmund asked, finishing Raina's thought.

'It looks like some sort of..fee?' Lucy proposed, unsure. Something dawned on Caspian.

'Slave traders.' He realised.

Suddenly bells went off again, startling the four royals. Battle cries were heard, just as men slid down the ropes they saw earlier. Raina sprung into action, unsheathing her swords, as Caspian aimed his crossbow at the ropes, and cutting them causing the men to hurtle to the ground. Raina took on three men, Edmund fought off two, and Lucy unsheathed her long dagger as two men came at her. Just then a shrill scream was heard, causing everyone to turn to the direction of the sound. Raina's eyes fell upon Eustace being held at knifepoint by a man, as the door behind them thud shut.

'Unless you want to hear this one squeal like a girl again..' The bloke began in a cocky tone, forcing Eustace forward. 'I'd say you should drop your weapons.'

'Like a girl?!' Eustace asked, incredulously.

'Now!' The man yelled, pressing the dagger to Eustace's neck.

Lucy angrily dropped her dagger to the ground, followed by Caspian who raised his arms in surrender. Edmund followed as well, throwing an angry look at his cousin.

'Eustace.' He spoke through gritted teeth.

Raina still clutched her swords. The disgusting bloke turned his gaze to her, somewhat shocked.

'Would you like this one's blood to paint the ground?' He said, ominously. Eustace paled even more than one thought possible.

Raina smiled.

'Oh, you wouldn't dare.'

With more effort than before, Raina's eyes turned blue as her palms began to glow. The man paled.

'Wh-what h-how-'

Blue light surrounded the man, throwing him away from Eustace, into the wall. The rest of the men came at Raina, collectively. She used her power to create a shockwave that knocked them off their feet. They scrambled to get up. Raina was breathing heavily, as the power left.

'Here's what you're going to do-' Raina couldn't finish her thought when Edmund yelled.

'RAINA LOOK OUT!'

'Wha-' Just as Raina turned around, a burly man with terrifying green eyes, and an evil smirk, used a long iron rod and slammed it against Raina's head.

'RAINA!' Edmund screamed as he rushed forward, but was intercepted by the slave traders.

Raina stumbled as vision blurred as her head pounded. She placed her hand on it, and found it to be covered with blood. Her eyes widened. She wasn't supposed to bleed.

'What- what is..' She couldn't complete her sentence as the world went black.

Raina awoke to the sounds of hollering and cheering the next day. Her head was pounding as her vision flared red. She groaned as the pain throbbed in her head, as she clutched it, and felt it swollen.

'Urgh..' She groaned.

'Raina. Raina!' Lucy whispered, concerned. As Raina opened her eyes, she realised her hands were bound in chains. Her eyes widened at the sight as she tried to get out of them.

'What the hell..' She whispered. Lucy gave a worried look.

'What's going on?' Raina asked, as she noted Eustace next to Lucy, along with some fauns and other humans bound in chains.

'Well uh..the short story is, after one of those blokes knocked you out, Ed and Caspian were thrown in the dungeons, and you, me and Eustace are being 'sold' to slave traders.' Lucy explained, as Raina stared at her.

'Right.'

Suddenly three burly men approached the group, and roughly grabbed Lucy, Raina and Eustace.

'Come on, fresh meat.' One of them said, holding Lucy's arm tightly.

'Let us GO!' Raina yelled, just when one of the men slapped her across the face.

'RAINA!' Lucy and Eustace yelled. Raina whimpered as she tried to touch her cheek. The man grabbed her chin, as Raina cringed when his disgusting breath hit her face.

'Knock it off, bitch.' He hissed, as he pushed her forward. Raina was on the verge of tears. She tried to summon her powers again, but was too exhausted.

The man who knocked Raina out the day before sat on a throne of sorts, overseeing the market. The same man that held Eustace at knifepoint stood next to a small raised platform, eyeing the three teenagers with a sadistic grin. He went for Lucy and pushed her roughly onto the platform.

'Alright, bring in your bids for this lovely little lady!' He booked as he grazed her cheek. Lucy looked utterly disgusted.

'I bid 60!'

'I bid 80!'

'100 for the little lady!'

The bids came from middle aged men, all of whom looked like the kind of men in the 'stay away from strangers' posters.

'120!' Another man yelled.

'150!'

The auctioneer observed the crowd for any more bids.

'Any more bids?' He called out. When he got no response, he approached the man who made the bid for 150, who paid him. Another man placed a card attached to a string around Lucy's neck, that read 'sold'. She was then gruffly taken off the platform and made to stand on the sidelines. A man then grabbed Raina and began to drag her to the platform.

'Hands off or I'll break them!' She seethed. The man who grabbed her simply laughed.

'Ooh feisty. Come on, lads, time for a break from them oldie wives back home! How much for this little sexy beast?' The auctioneer boomed as bids began rolling in, Raina looking utterly nauseous.

'150!'

'I bid 180!'

'250!'

'Oohs' were heard throughout the crowd.

'Any more bids? No? Sold!' The man addressed the crowd as a similar card was placed around Raina's neck. She was also made to stand next to Lucy. Eustace was placed on the platform next.

'And now for this fine specimen! Who'll kick off the bidding!' The auctioneer called out. No one made any bids.

'Come on now, he may not look like much but uh..' The auctioneer grabbed Eustace's arm. 'He's strong.'

'He's strong alright.' Someone in the crowd spoke. 'Smells like the rear end of a minotaur!' He joked as laughs were heard throughout the crowd. Eustace looked mortified.

'That is an outrageous lie! I won the school hygiene award, two years running!' Eustace defended. The continued to laugh as the auctioneer gave an amused look to the boy, before turning to the crowd.

'Come on, someone make a bid!' He whined. In the meantime, Edmund and Caspian were being brought out of the dungeons. Raina's eyes fell upon Edmund, as the latter's eyes widened in relief, but soon contorted, noticing her head injury.

'I'll take them off your hands.' Someone in the crowd spoke, walking forward. His face was covered by a cloth. Raina's eyes lit up, as she turned to Lucy and smirked. Lucy mirrored her expression.

'Get ready.' Raina whispered as Lucy nodded.

'I'll take them off all of your hands!' He yelled, as Drinian ripped the cloth away, Reepicheep perched on his shoulder. More men in the crowd followed, revealing the crew of the Dawn Treader.

'For Narnia!' Reepicheep yelled, as the others repeated his cry, and a brawl thus ensued.

'Guards! GUARDS! Move yourselves!' The slave traders yelled.

Raina quickly shut her eyes, and summoned her power with great effort. Her palms began to glow, as she directed the power to Lucy, Eustace and her own chains. They became brittle and broke away. Once the power left, Raina wheezed.

'Raina, take cover. You shouldn't fight like this.' Lucy spoke hurriedly.

'I'm fine.' Raina maintained. Lucy began to fight off some traders with makeshift weapons like boxes and crates, while Reepicheep fought alongside her with his sword.

Raina found Edmund and Caspian trying to fight off the traders, their hands still bound in chains. She took a deep breath and jumped up high to meet them. Their eyes widened at the sight.

'Hi guys. Need help?' She said sweetly, as her eyes and palms glowed and their chains crumbled. Edmund gave Raina a grateful smile.

'Thanks!' He called out, as Caspian punched one of the traders in the face, knocking him out cold. Raina turned to him.

'So you have been training?' She mused, as Caspian rolled his eyes.

'Shut up.'

Raina laughed and flew back down, finding two swords on the ground, and 4 men rushing at her.

The first two men swung their swords at her head, which she ducked to avoid, as she slashed her swords at their thighs, making them fall to the ground, screaming and unable to get up. The other two struck from either side, as Raina parried their attacks. Both of them struck high, as Raina swerved low, and their swords clashed together. In that split second she twisted the swords out of their grip, and slashed their chests. Raina was breathing heavily, not noticing the the man from earlier coming behind her, and grabbing her in a chokehold and lifted her up, as her legs dangled. She let out a surprised gasp, as the man squeezed her trachea.

'Let. Me. GO!' She screamed as she elbowed the man repeatedly in the chest. He didn't seem to flinch.

'Puny little witch.' He growled. Raina's vision throbbed red. Her hand fell upon a dagger in the inside of the man's coat, as she quickly grabbed it, and stabbed him in the side. His grip loosened as she elbowed him again, pushing him off her. She finally turned to him, fear gripping her as he dropped to the ground, bleeding out.

The Narnians overpowered the slave traders, as cheers were sounded throughout the land. Edmund and Caspian met up with Lucy, exchanging embraces, relieved.

'Are you alright?' Edmund asked, checking his sister for injuries.

'I'm fine, but I can't find Raina.' Lucy said, worriedly. Edmund's face hardened.

'She has to be here somewhere..' Caspian assured as he looked around. Edmund noticed Raina on the ground some distance away.

'Raina!' He yelled as he ran over to her. He dropped to the ground, and wrapped his arms around her, tightly, steadying her as he stood her up.

'Are you alright?' He asked, concerned. She met his gaze, as Edmund looked taken aback by the fear in her eyes.

'Yes yes, I'm fine.' She assured him, but her words didn't reach her eyes.

*********

Everyone cheered for the royals who walked down the road, the ones who saved them from the slave traders. Edmund and Caspian were ahead as Lucy and Raina trailed some distance behind.

'Your majesties! Your majesties!' Someone yelled as Raina felt a hand on her shoulder, as she turned around to see a middle aged man with curly hair and simple attire.

Drinian intercepted him, and kept him at a distance from the Queen as Edmund and Caspian's hands went to the hilts of their swords.

'My wife was taken just this morning!' He said, worriedly, when a little girl came running up to him.

'Daddy!' She yelled, helplessly. Raina's heart tugged at the sight.

'It's alright, Drinian.' Caspian reassured. Edmund stood next to Raina, protectively.

'I beg you, take me with you.' The man pleaded as his daughter cried.

'I want to come!'

'No Gael, stay with your aunt.' He said.

'I'm Rhince, a fine sailor. Been on the seas my whole life!' He exclaimed, as he turned to Raina.

'Your Majesty, I beg you..' He pleaded, tears sparkling in his eyes. Raina took his hands.

'Absolutely sir. Please.' She reassured, as the man relaxed.

'Thank you.'

'But Daddy..' Gael begged, as the man bent down to her level.

'Have I ever not come back?' He hugged her tightly. 'Now be good.'

He left as a woman put an arm around her, pulling her away. Raina felt her throat tighten.

'Hey, you okay?' Edmund asked, an arm around her waist. She looked surprised at the action.

'I'll be fine.'

As they walked towards the port, a voice was heard some distance away.

'My King! My King!'

Raina and Caspian turned to the source of the voice, finding it to come from an elderly man, with a long grey beard, a sword in his hands.

'That's Lord Bern, he's one of the seven.' Caspian whispered as Raina nodded.

'This was given to me by your father. I hid it safely in a cave all these years.' He spoke to Caspian.

'That's an old Narnian sword.' Edmund pointed out.

'It's from your Golden Age.' Lord Bern concurred. 'There are seven such swords. Gifts from Aslan to protect Narnia. Your father entrusted them to us.' He explained.

'Here, take it. And may it protect you.' Lord Bern held the sword out to Caspian, who took it, as cheers were heard throughout the crowd that had gathered.

'My Queen..' Lord Bern turned to Raina. She looked startled.

'Y-yes?'

'I must warn you. The prophecy of old is upon us.' The man spoke in a low voice. Raina squinted.

'Prophecy?' Edmund asked.

'This prophecy was written during Narnia's creation. So old, and ancient, almost forgotten. But, we the Lords have not forgotten.' He said in a haunted voice.

'The Umbra Regem rises in silence, the Goddess, fallen, the spectrum of light and shadow hence, a final battle ensues, a Goddess till her end or the end.' The man recited. Caspian's eyes widened.

'I heard my father speak of this once, when I was a boy. He was a believer but he never believed in this. Said it was too far-fetched.' Caspian chimed in.

'The Umbra Regem?' Raina asked, inquisitively.

'Believed to be Narnia's greatest most powerful evil. It is Latin for the 'Shadow King'. If drawings can be taken as fact, he is a creature of shadow and lightning.' Lord Bern replied. Raina's blood ran cold as she recalled dreams she had of a similar creature.

'The Goddess fallen? Is that supposed to be Raina?' Lucy asked.

'She is the Goddess of Narnia. According to legend, the Goddess's will is the strongest thing to exist in Narnia. 'Fallen' could mean she no longer has control.' Lord Bern explained. He noticed the side of Raina's forehead bleeding and gasped.

'The Goddess cannot bleed, unless given an ancient poison...' Lord Bern breathed, worriedly as all eyes fell upon Raina. The puzzle pieces clicked in, Raina's struggles to summon her power ever since she arrived, the truth became clear as the colour drained from Raina's face.

Busted.
