Chapter 17: Mnemba Island
Less than a mile. The whole island's circumference around and diameter across was less than a mile.
If my thirst returned over the next few days, which I knew it was going to, I was going to be screwed. If I had guessed correctly, at this rate I was needing to feed every two days. I'd have to swim back to the mainland and hunt there... and what was on offer? Pigs? Goats? I had to turn to taking away people's livestock, their livelihoods just so that I wouldn't eat them. God only knew how I was going to hide swimming back to the mainland from Jake. Maybe I'd just have to wear him out enough so that he was knocked out for the whole night. That was definitely possible.
I had kept my promise and hadn't pushed him away. We had returned to how we were before the bloodlust started. When I returned to the cottage after my midnight 'snack', I washed myself briefly and climbed back into bed with Jake. Immediately his arms wrapped around me tightly and he breathed me in before burying his face in my hair. I then realised that my own personal secret was safe.
The next morning started as not just the tenth day of our honeymoon but the first day of our luxury private island getaway. From the local Ngorongoro Crater airfield we flew three hours to Zanzibar - the mainland where I would get my blood source from - and then from there, a twenty minute boat ride to the true barefoot haven that was Mnemba Island.
Like scattered diamonds, the sun bounced off of the ripples that the waves left behind. As the boat approached the shoreline the waves broke, the tips frothing as they rolled towards the white sand, lapping at the beach before slinking back again as another wave took its place.
The engine of the boat stilled as we rocked over the waves a few metres away from the exposed sand. It was the purest, whitest sand I had ever seen; the beach stretched around the whole circumference of the island. About one hundred yards back from the waters edge began the small tropical forest that took over the centre of the island, and embedded within the tree line were ten cabins, with a large beach restaurant facing the sea.
I didn't know which cabin was ours, but they all looked extremely beautiful, settling in with the picturesque location perfectly. With walls and windows draped in white linens, and wide window-like shutters in place of doors. The doors were open, displaying the pristine four post bed that was also draped in white linens in the centre of the room, with a small corridor going further back into the cabin - an area my eyes couldn't reach. Outside each cabin there was a small lounge area with a fire pit and a table with two chairs. Romantic nights in were going to be a must.
As we were told that our luggage would be taken to our cabins separately to us, a small gate was opened just to the left of the front of the boat. It was too shallow for the boat to go inland any further so we had to step off the boat into the foot and a half of blue water that flowed around us.
Jake stood first, the boat swaying lightly under his weight as walked towards the gate. One of the crew offered him a hand as the jump was about three foot down until his feet would touch the sand under the waves. Politely, although I knew he was being a show off, Jake declined the help and somewhat gracefully jumped over the edge of the boat, using his hand as leverage on the side of the boat so he wouldn't make too much of a splash.
"Mrs Black?" The crew member called after looking down at Jake with approval. As I stood, I pushed my sunglasses back to sit on top of my head, tucked my phone into my bra and hiked my maxi skirt up and tucked the extra material into the waistband to stop the majority of it getting wet.
The crew member raised his eyebrows at me and sent me a mischievous wink. I gave him a tight smile as I walked towards him and winced slightly as Jake growled lowly from down beside the boat. The waves gently hitting the side of the boat dulled his threat.
"Jake, it's okay." I said so quietly only he could hear. People were going to look, people were always going to look. Part of being a vampire was looking irresistible to lure prey in, I was no Rosalie but I did like how I looked, there was no harm in that. Don't get me wrong, I saw how girls looked at Jake, too.
The crew member offered his hand to me which I declined as well, looking to Jake instead who was waiting patiently for me, his arms outstretched ready to take hold of me and lower me into the water. I heard the crew member scoff under his breath as Jake's hands touched my waist, as that electric pulse shot through my body I didn't give the crew member a second thought as Jake lowered me into the water. My hands slid over his shoulders as my toes touched the smooth sand under the waves. "Much better." He grinned at me before placing a sweet, meaningful kiss against my forehead.
Our two other honeymoon couples followed suit, wanting to be as romantic as Jake and I, they ignored the crew member and the husbands helped to lift their wives from the boat and into the sea. Upon the shore waiting for us were a small team of representatives, the three of them holding a tray carrying flutes of champagne for us. We waded through the water towards them and once our feet hit the dry sand our introduction began.
We were taken towards what the employees called 'Headquarters', there we would be given our room keys and a pack of the information about the small island and what it had to offer. This ranged from dining experiences to activities that we could take part in throughout the day.
The small tour only lasted about forty minutes, and by the time we were shown to our cabin it was just after midday. We were given time to settle, Jake booked us in for a meal at the island's restaurant, and we spent the rest of the afternoon lounging about on the beach and swimming in the sea and snorkelling. The water was a little cold, but nothing compared to back home. Once you got used to it you were completely fine.
Whilst getting ready for our very romantic evening, in our true honeymoon style we got distracted with each other, making us a little late as always. Graciously Jake carried me across the sand of the beach until we reached the path that ran along the back of the cabins. For a small island the noises of the tiny tropical forest were amazing, such a contrast from home and the plains of the mainland.
Jake and I walked hand in hand, greeted with beaming smiles from the other guests and the waitstaff. When we were shown to our table by the maître d', I couldn't take my eyes off of the view. With the faint sounds of the kitchen dulled by the calm rolling waves, I could have called this paradise... until some waitress' ogling ruined it for me.
"That waitress hasn't stopped looking at you since we sat down." I groaned as I watched her stare at the side of Jake's face. Her thoughts were bugging me too, this was a honeymoon destination, what did she think was going to happen?
"Well, I'm only looking at you." Jake smiled at me as he lifted his glass to take a sip of wine.
"Sweet... but no." I grimaced as I side eyed her once more. This time she was talking to one of her colleagues, giggling like a school girl as they now both ogled him.
"Urgh, just look at those arms." She moaned as she leant against the counter at the bar. "What I'd give to have those wrapped around me, look he even has a tattoo!"
"Carly, they're on a honeymoon." The nice waitress so kindly reminded her. At least someone had a functioning brain.
"I wonder how big he is, I mean look at the size of him, it has to be massive, right?" This Carly mused, sighing contently to herself. "I bet he knows how to treat a woman right. His wife doesn't look scary, bet I could take her." She finished with a laugh.
"You're unbelievable." The other waitress scoffed as she rolled her eyes.
Suddenly I saw red. I wasn't sure if it was my new bloodlust or if I was just a protective and possessive wife but right now I had to shut her up. I pushed myself out from beneath my table, the chair scraping against the wooden floor.
"Ari, don't!" Jake warned, his hand grabbing mine in a flash to restrain me.
My eyes flashed back to him, I could feel my glare instantly soften as I looked at his face. "But she's-" I began but Jake squeezed my hand a little tighter.
"I have to deal with comments like that about you everyday." He explained as the waitress approached us, her notepad ready as she licked her lips and swayed towards us. I couldn't help the growl that escaped my lips as Jake continued talking me down. "Just ignore her."
I gritted my teeth with anger, and Jake winced at the sound of my teeth scraping against one another as I tucked myself and the chair back under the table. "Hi, my name is Carly, I'll be your waitress for the evening, what can I get you?" She smirked, staring only at Jake, her body facing him more more so than me.
"My husband and I would both like the chicken." I interrupted her eye flirting with my flat tone. She turned towards me, her face trying not to give away how annoyed she was with me. "That's all." I smiled at her all too sweetly but kept my eyes cold, letting her know not to fuck with me.
"If you say so." She grunted under her breath, giving us a tight lipped smile before she turned on her heel and made her way back towards the kitchen and bar.
"You didn't have to be so... I don't wanna say rude but..." Jake started to laugh but suddenly stopped when he saw the grimace on my face. "Baby, come on."
"She was eye fucking you. Right in front of me. She's still doing it now." I snapped, growling lowly as I fought to get up out of my chair and give her a piece of my mind.
"You're so feisty recently, what's gotten into you?" He snickered as he grasped my hand across the table and began to rub his thumb over the skin on the back of my hand.
Immediately I simmered down and took a long deep breath through my nose. Maybe the blood was amplifying my moods just a little... I needed to keep that under control. "I'm fine. Just possessive over my husband."
Jake laughed lightly, a gorgeous smile taking over his lips, the sparkle reaching his eyes. "Now you know how I feel about you."
"Sorry." I smiled meekly at him, it must be a pain having to ignore people's comments about your partner all the time.
Our evening continued with less ferocity from myself after the rude waitress decided to stop serving our table because I had been 'unkind' to her when she took our order. Our food was exquisite and eating on the beach and listening to the waves was almost dreamlike until someone on the table next to us ordered a seafood platter.
Instantly my stomach swirled as the smell wafted across the space between our two tables. I had never really been one for fish but it just smelt wrong. I tried to only breathe through my mouth concentrating on not breathing it in but I could taste in the air. My stomach churned again and I felt the warmth leave my face. "Ari, are you okay?" Jake reached his warm hand across the table and clasped my newly clammy one, I brushed him off as I felt the sickness beginning to rise in my stomach.
"Erm, yep." I kept my words and voice clipped as I tried not to breathe. "Bathroom break." I stood up abruptly from my chair as Jake looked at me with deep concern, preparing to stand too. "Could you just order me a water?" He nodded mutely as I made a dash the restaurant restrooms.
I burst through the door and locked myself in a stall as I prepared myself for the disgusting task of throwing up. In my vampire life I had only ever thrown up once before, and that was when I overexerted myself when I trained with Carlisle nearly five years ago now, since when had smells made me want to puke?
Cautiously, I took in a breath of air and sighed with relief and fell back against the stall door, leaning against it when I realised the fishy smell hadn't made its way into the bathroom. After a few deep breaths my stomach settled itself, I stood on shaky legs, staring at the tiled floor. What the fuck was that?
I straightened myself out and unlocked the stall door and made my way over to the sinks to wash up. As I stared at my reflection, literally watching the colour return to my cheeks, the bathroom door swung open again and the woman who had been sat at the table next to Jake and I came running in. She didn't even have time to lock herself in a stall before she threw up the contents of her stomach into the toilet. I held my breath again as I washed my hands and got out of there as fast as I could, I didn't need my stomach turning again.
The only conclusion that I could come up with was that I could smell that the seafood was off, the poor woman retching in the bathroom was a victim of that as well. My heightened senses must have just informed me a lot quicker than her stomach had.
As I left the bathroom my ears pricked up to the sound of Jake's and the disrespectful waitress' voices. "I'd like to apologise again, sir, for the inconvenience." She batted her eyelashes at him and I scowled. For some reason, instead of marching over there, my feet kept me in my place. Maybe I just wanted to see how Jake would handle the situation...
"It's fine." Jake began and my breath hitched as I squeezed my hands into fists. "Don't worry about it." He waved her off with his free hand and gave her a tight lipped smile.
"Are you sure? Is there nothing else I can do for you, sir?" She reached forward and briefly placed her hand on his bicep. Was this actually happening... in what world was a person confident enough to do that to someone on their honeymoon. "Erm... I know this little place-"
My stare burned through her skull and then suddenly the vein pulsating just above her collar bone began to call to me. The venom in pooled in my mouth a snarl began to build up in my chest. There was not one ounce of guilt or regret within me. I wanted her gone and I wanted her gone now, I lurched forward ready to spring.
"No, and please don't touch me." Jake said firmly and he shrugged off her touch and stood to his full height. "I'm pretty sure there are rules about staff fraternising with the guests, especially at a honeymoon destination, so if you talk to me like that again I'll get you fired and I'll make sure I take my complaint high enough so that no restaurant or hotel take you into their employment again! Do I make myself clear?"
Immediately I straightened myself up and swallowed the venom back down. The girl shrunk away from Jake and nodded quickly before spinning on her heel, her face crimson. Jake's eyes then fell on me, his own face showing burning rage, the air around him quivering slightly... no wonder the waitress ran as fast as she did.
"Hey, you okay, baby?" Jake asked me as I returned to my seat, a chilled glass of water now at my place next to my wine glass.
"Yeah... erm?" I glanced to my left to see that the seafood platter had been removed and the male companion of the woman being ill in the bathroom was gone as well. "Where'd the guy go? What was that?" I asked, my second question referencing what happened with the waitress and how he handled it.
"I need more than just a 'yeah', Ari." Jake said with a little more seriousness than concern to his voice, completely ignoring my second question.
"Well I need more than you ignoring my question." I laughed lightly as I settled back in my chair. "You went all Cullen on her."
Jake's eyes widened at the comparison. "No I didn't." He said stubbornly.
"Yes you did! I can totally imagine hearing those same exact words coming out of Alice's mouth." I taunted as I settled back into my chair and took another sip of the chilled water.
"Oh shut up!" He grumbled as he threw his linen napkin at my face. "How are you feeling anyway?" Likewise whenever he felt concerned for me his face softened considerably as the words left his lips.
"The seafood... the smell, it made me feel sick. I wasn't, but I was close to it." I explained as I brought the water up to my lips to take another small sip. "I'm fine now the smell is gone. The poor woman in the bathroom isn't having much fun though."
Jake grimaced. "He's back there throwing up as well. I got a waft of the smell after you rushed back there." He said jabbing his thumb back towards the restrooms.
"Yeah, sorry, I don't know what came over me. It just smelt really bad." I laughed a little awkwardly as I took another sip of the water. I felt better, a lot better, almost normal again despite slight churning of my stomach.
"Thank god we had already eaten. That smell has put me off food for a while... well for the next hour at least." Jake joked as he stood from his seat. "Shall we go back to the suite, get away from all these... smells." He offered me his hand as I finished the last of the water.
"Yes please." I took his hand and scooted out of my chair.

"How would you feel about a midnight swim?" Jake asked, a mischievous grin on his face, as he laid down beside me on the daybed that was just outside the front of our cabin.
I had been lying in the darkness, staring up at the stars and listening to the waves as I tried to soothe my unsettled stomach. I had never been one for fishy foods but the smell of that platter nearly made me hurl my own dinner back up. After lying down for an hour or so the sickness dulled.
"What if someone sees us?" I remarked, rolling onto my side to prop myself up on my elbow.
"The other cabins are one hundred and fifty metres away in each direction, and in the darkness they won't see. Besides, there's a couple out in the sea on the other side of the island, I can hear them." Jake laughed. I concentrated slightly and then relaxed my hearing instantly when moans reached my eardrums. I quickly unfocused my hearing.
With my free hand I reached out and cupped Jake's cheek, caressing the warm skin with my thumb. "Fine." I smiled at him as I sat up. "But you have to catch me first." My words were left behind me as sprung up from the day bed and darted towards the sea.
"Hey!" Jake whirled after me as I reached behind my back for the zipper of my dress, my feet sinking in the soft sand as I turned to face him. Jake stopped dead in his tracks as I shimmied the dress down my body, revealing the intricate, lace lingerie that I was wearing underneath. "Wow."
"Do you like it?" I asked him, giving him a twirl. Jake didn't say a word, instead he sprung forward and reached for my body, placing his hands on the back of my thighs to lift me up into his arms. As I wrapped my legs around his waist he turned and started back towards the cabin. "I thought we were swimming?" I asked, adding a false tone of innocence and sadness.
"Later." He grunted as he stepped back onto the wooden porch that was the entrance of our cabin. "I want you moaning my name first."

The rest of our honeymoon continued blissfully. I only needed to feed again once and that trip to the mainland was quicker than I expected. I ended up feeding on two farm pigs, I made sure to leave some money in a small zip-locked bag for the owner, I know it wouldn't make up for it, but I gave them $200 in cash... that was all that I had on me, hopefully that would've made up for the selfish crime I committed.
We spent our days, snorkelling, windsurfing, scuba diving and paddle boarding. We spent our nights dining under the stars, love making into the early hours and taking midnight swims.
Despite the new hiccup that life had thrown at me, this vacation had been the most amazing two weeks. Jake and I had been able to just be ourselves and not have to worry about a single thing from our lives back home. Time away from all that stress; being sterile, being alpha, my mother, the Volturi... I just knew that once we got home all that stuff was going to hit us like a brick wall.
I wondered if the Cullens knew about my new habit, that they hadn't called because Alice could see I was handling myself and they didn't want to disrupt us or make Jake worry. I knew that when we got back to our regular lives, I'd have to come clean to him about the blood. I couldn't sneak out of the house every other night for blood, that was just stupid and uncalled for.
I just hoped that he wouldn't take it badly or see me as any less me. He had struggled in the beginning, seeing me as part vampire, and I didn't want the blood to make things worse, to take him back to that mindset. I had faith, though, I trusted him to love me for me. Our vows 'In sickness and in health' had to play a part in this. Maybe Carlisle could help, and maybe this new addiction could be fixed.
Perhaps I should let Carlisle take a look at me first... just so I could have all the answers for Jake when I eventually tell him. Though, I didn't exactly know when that would be...
