CHAPTER 36

I went up to my room and slammed the door just as I heard Max being walked up the stairs by someone. I heard footsteps right outside my door, walking past to the next room. Out of all of the rooms, the one right next to mine. Why was Demi doing this? What did I do to make her hate me so much? I dug my face into the pillow and shut my eyes.

I was back in the lab. This time I alone in the room. No mutants, no evil woman, just me. There was more glass surrounding the room than last time. It was like I was a pet snake in a glass square cage. Then I heard through the speakers, "Alexandra Steine. Subject 35Q" The voice sounded robotic and very practiced. I tried to get out of the chair I sat in but as usual I was strapped in. The room was bright and I all I could see through the glass was the lit up hallway. Max wasn't there this time, and I was wondering if he could see what I was seeing. I noticed the high ceiling, something I hadn't noticed before, and above me was a small glass room, with a group of men in protective suits, watching me. What were they doing? And that's when I felt the staggering pain. Not only in the dream, but I was sure I felt it in real life. Max's voice was immediately heard in my head, "Alex?"

I woke up.

My head had stopped throbbing. I got up and walked to the door, opening it and stepping out. I cautiously tried to look into Max's room through the small crack in the wall. He was sitting on the bed, clenching his head. And then I heard him say, to himself "Oh, Alex, what have I dragged you into?".

I went downstairs, where I was greeted by an unwelcoming face, "Ugh, you again. Bek is looking for you"

I walked into Bek's office. He was by the window, his back to me. "You wanted to see me?" I asked,

"I've heard you and Max are familiar with each other,"

"Yeah, he saved my life"

"Did he?

"I had gotten shot and he took me in and helped me get better," I say avoiding eye contact,

"What is your relationship with Mr Wilde?"

"Relationship?" I asked, "There is no relationship. He just helped me recover, that's it"

"Hm," He said turning away from the window and motioning towards his desk, "Thank you. You may join the others now"

I walked out. I was nervous, and he could see that. Everyone was in the hall. As soon as I entered the room I was hit with the incredible smell of food. So much of it. I looked around at the tabled that bordered the walls.

"Where did you get all of this from?" I asked Logan, who was serving himself half a baked potato. Since when did potatoes grow?

"We looted this from the District 7 raid,"

I eyed the food. They didn't look like normal food, they all had a weird characteristic. The beets were a light pink, the apples were orange, which is ironic, and the large foul that lay on the centre table was enormous.

"What's wrong with it?" I said, my eyes still on the strange bird,

"It's artificial, it's all made in their labs"

Wow, they were doing good. Not bad for a shitty president.
