Defenders (24)
I was still wearing that ridiculous purple dress, since I didn’t have enough time to change before Aiden barged in on Dex and me. So I was just sitting on one of the seats in the RV, uncomfortably crossing my legs as I waited to get to our destination, wherever that was.
Aiden continued to scowl at me from across the RV, and I was starting to get really sick of it. Honestly, I didn’t care if he was mad at me, but it really annoyed me that he had to continuously remind me how much he didn’t like me.
I shifted my legs, but this did not help me in this uncomfortable dress at all. I tried to move in my seat a little, but this did nothing as well. I was stuck being uncomfortable for the rest of the night until we saved Kristie.
I would have ripped the dress off right then and there, if it was socially acceptable. I was pretty sure Dex would have had a heart attack, too.
“Violet, I brought a change of clothes for you,” Nay suddenly informed me when she saw that I couldn’t take being in this dress much longer, and I let out a long sigh of relief. “They’re in the bathroom.”
I could have hugged her though I knew that wouldn’t have been the best idea. So I just pushed myself up out of my seat and made my may toward the bathroom door.
“Make sure you don’t watch her change, RV,” Hank laughed from his seat, and I made a face at the thought of anyone watching me change, even if it was just a car.
Dex did not seem to like this joke very much. “Yeah, don’t.”
I rolled my eyes and shut the bathroom door behind me, just to make sure that no one would peep at me at all. I then stripped out of the dress and changed into a very comfy t-shirt and pair of jeans.
When I opened the door, I was surprised to see that I was now face-to-face with Aiden, the scowl I was getting used to on his face. I took a step back and nearly tripped over nothing.
“Took you long enough,” he spat, shoving right by me and into the bathroom. “What, do you want me to piss myself?”
I rolled my eyes. “I wouldn’t mind it, to be completely honest.”
My hands were balled into fists at my sides. Aiden had been driving me crazy, and there was absolutely no reason for him to be treating me the way he was. We were going to save Kristie, weren’t we? It wasn’t like we had let her get kidnapped and then forgot about her.
About ten seconds after he entered the bathroom, we suddenly heard him shout. I jumped, since I hadn’t left my spot from in front of the door, and his shouting didn’t stop until I unclenched my hands.
When he opened the door and exited the bathroom, I had to slap a hand over my mouth to stop myself from bursting out into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. Aiden was completely soaked in the front from his knees and all the way up to his chest.
“What happened?” Nay asked him, sounding very uncaring, but I knew she only sounded this way because she wasn’t really surprised that something had gone wrong.
Aiden gave us a look that said we should have known what had happened to him, but he didn’t seem to realize that it wasn’t the most obvious thing in the world. When none of us responded, he explained.
“Water just started spurting out at me,” he growled, staring down at the wet clothes that stuck to his body, “and that includes my piss.”
Anthony was the first to laugh, and then it was followed by Hank, Dex, and me. Nay looked like she couldn’t believe she was surrounded by such idiots, though I could tell that she would have laughed if Aiden wasn’t right in front of her.
“You can control water, can’t you?” Dex asked, trying his hardest to keep his amused grin off of his face. “You couldn’t stop it from hitting you?”
“I can control water, not piss!”
“That’s still a liquid,” Nay informed him as if he didn’t know, not even looking up from the magazine that she was flipping through.
This only seemed to anger Aiden even more, and I bit down even harder on my lip to stop myself from laughing. “Most of the liquid in a toilet is water, too,” I couldn’t help but point out.
He now turned on me, which was something I was not expecting, so I nearly fell right over trying to take a step away from him. Dex stood up from his seat, but didn’t move any closer.
“This was all your doing,” he spat, pointing a finger right at my face. “You were the one that made the toilet attack me. This was all because of you.”
I was so surprised that he was accusing me that I couldn’t even defend myself right away. I just stood there, my mouth open as I tried to form the words, but nothing was coming out. I was pretty much a sitting duck.
“Aiden, leave her alone,” Anthony called out from his spot beside Dex, who was still standing and ready to come to my aid if I needed it. That was definitely a big possibility. “Even if she did do it, it wasn’t like she meant to. You know she can’t control her powers very well.”
“That’s right!” he continued, and finally backed off, though it was only slightly. “You can’t even control your damn powers! What are you even doing on this team, anyway? What are you even doing in the DAU? There’s no point in having someone who can’t control their powers! You’re useless!”
“Aiden!” Nay snapped now, causing everyone in the RV to jump when a chill suddenly blew by us. I hadn’t heard her raise her voice since the time she had caught us after we had snuck out with Lena. “Do not talk to Violet like that. She’s on this team because the Director put her on this team. She’s in the DAU because the Director put her in the DAU. The Director knows more than all of us, so obviously he saw something in Violet that made her needed by the DAU. And right now, you seem like the member of the team that shouldn’t be in the DAU.”
Aiden looked shocked by the fact that someone was not agreeing with him, and then also insulting him at the same time. He had been handed everything he’d ever wanted, and now that he wasn’t getting what he wanted, I wouldn’t have been surprised if he threw a fit.
I now dashed by him and toward Dex, who placed a hand on my shoulder, as if to make sure I was okay. We didn’t exchange any words, but he still made me feel better.
Surprisingly, Aiden backed off. He must have seen that there was no one on his side, so there was no point in continuing to fight. So he said nothing more and merely plopped down on one of the seats across from us.
“Oh, Aiden, that’s gross,” RV complained, and I had to bite the inside of my cheek to stop myself from laughing. “I would not like urine in my seats!”
“It’s mostly water, RV, so shut your trap,” was all Aiden said back as an argument, and all RV did was grumble something incoherent under his breath.
It was still a little strange that the RV could talk, and even stranger that one of my teammates had just had an argument with it. But whatever, I guess.
When the RV suddenly came to a stop, I got mixed emotions. I felt nervous, because I knew we were going to have to fight Malicius and Lynx. I felt happy, because now I didn’t have to deal with Aiden in a confined space. And then I was scared, because we were still going to have to fight Malicious and Lynx.
“We can’t drive move any farther in the RV or else Malicius and Lynx will know we’re close, so it’s time to get out now,” Nay informed us, though I didn’t like the sound of walking anywhere. “Hank and I will stay in here, but we’re just a call away if you need help.”
I understood why they were sending us out on our own, but that didn’t mean I liked it. I felt like we would have been able to get Kristie back a lot faster if they were with us, but we were going to have to get her ourselves.
We exited out of the RV into an empty, dark street. I immediately wanted to turn back, but I knew that I couldn’t. It was my fault that Kristie was gone, so I was going to have to go get her.
We walked through the cold streets, the only lights coming from the badly lit street lights. I really hoped we were close to where Kristie was, because I might have froze to death soon if we weren’t.
“It’s cold out tonight,” Anthony said, looking around as if he could see the cold around us. “I wish Hank and Nay would have told us what the weather was going to be like before we left.”
“Or before Aiden forced us out,” Dex muttered from beside us, though he really didn’t have any room to complain, since he was wearing a jacket.
I let out a breath and rubbed my hands up and down my arms. I was really glad I had changed out of that small dress, because it could have been much worse. “It really is cold out,” I agreed. I wouldn’t have been surprised if I could see my breath.
And much to my surprise, Dex began to shrug himself out of his jacket. I didn’t even know how I was supposed to react at first, since I didn’t think I’d ever be in this type of situation before now.
“No, Dex,” I denied with a shake of my head. “I’m fine; it’s okay.”
But he didn’t listen to me, and I was kind of glad that he didn’t, because now I was warm and Dex’s smell wafted around me as I pulled my arms through his sleeves. Alright, this wasn’t too bad.
This was supposed to be romantic, I knew. I had seen this in movies before, and it was always a cliché but sweet moment between the boy and the girl. They were supposed to look into each other’s eyes dreamily and then kiss. But I knew Dex and I were not going to do that, considering out two teammates were right beside us, and one of them was not very happy with me at this very moment because we were out in the cold, and it was very dark.
“This is all your fault,” Aiden snapped, and I couldn’t believe that he was actually starting with this again. Just because Hank and Nay weren’t with us anymore, he was going to start acting like a jerk again. “If it wasn’t for you, Kristie would still be here and we wouldn’t have to be out here in the cold.”
I was really getting fed up with everything he was saying to me. Yes, I shouldn’t have left Kristie alone in the club. That was my fault; of course it was. But I didn’t need to hear that from him over and over again. He was like a broken record.
“I don’t have to deal with this,” I snapped, taking a step back away from my teammates. “I’ll go find Kristie on my own.”
I shot up off the ground and into the air, getting high enough that none of them could grab me and pull me back done. I could hear Dex shout my name as I flew off, but I wasn’t about to stop and go back.
I had Kristie’s tracker on my phone; I could find her myself. I did not need Aiden and his constant complaining and whining. I was going to get Kristie back without him, and then he couldn’t yell at me anymore.
Though I barely knew how to fly, I seemed to be able to do it rather well when I didn’t think about it. I just continued to think about Aiden and Kristie, and I was able to stay up in the air. But when I suddenly heard screaming, I nearly fell right out of the sky.
It was a female that was screaming, and I immediately assumed it was Kristie. Without even a second thought, I swooped down toward the sound. Let’s see how Aiden reacted when he saw that I was the one that had saved Kristie.
But when I got to the ground, I was surprised to see that it was not Kristie who was screaming in the abandoned street, but a woman I had never seen before instead. She was on the ground, a much larger man on top of her, holding her down.
“Help me!” the woman shouted. She hadn’t seen me yet. “Someone, help me!”
“Hey!” I called out, which caused the woman to stop screaming and for her attacker to stop. They both looked up at me, the woman thankful and the man angry. “Get off of her and leave her alone!”
When the man saw that I was only a teenager girl, he didn’t seem so angry any longer. He obviously didn’t think that I was a threat. Oh, how he was wrong.
I immediately grew angry, and I didn’t really know why. I didn’t know if it was because of my jealousy of Kristie, Aiden being a jerk, the fact that this man thought he could just continue attacking this woman in front of me like I wasn’t even there, or all three, but I found myself lifting my hand up and throwing the man away from the defenseless woman.
He seemed surprised, but undeterred. He stood back up, but came toward me instead of the woman that was paralyzed with fear. I thought I would be afraid, but I was actually glad that he was coming toward me instead of the woman.
Raising my hand again, I threw the man against the wall that wasn’t too far away from us. But this was different from the other times I had thrown someone against a wall; this time, I was holding the man by his throat.
He was gasping and struggling, but I wasn’t about to stop. I was so angry, but this wasn’t even letting my anger out. I wanted to hurt him more, but then I didn’t want to hurt him. I wasn’t even aware of how I felt anymore, and it was a strange feeling.
People like this man disgusted me. Murderers, rapists, and anything of the sort. How could people intentionally hurt someone for no good reason? Why was someone allowed to take someone’s life, or innocence? Why did people hurt each other?
I then realized that I was hurting this man—killing him, even—but I couldn’t stop. I couldn’t drop my hand, or loosen the telekinetic grip I had on him. It just kept tightening… and tightening… and tightening…
“Violet, what are you doing?” I heard Nay suddenly shout, and she was now beside me and grabbing onto my arm. “Stop it, Violet! You’re going to kill him!”
But I didn’t stop. I wanted to, I tried, but I just couldn’t. I continued to choke him to the point where my hand began to shake, and then my arm. Nay just watched me in shock for a moment before grabbing onto my arm and yanking me out of my trance.
The man I had been strangling collapsed onto the ground. He was unconscious, but not dead. The woman he tried to harass, however, was looking at me like she was absolutely terrified. And I didn’t blame her, because I felt the same way.
“It’s a good thing Hank is on his way,” Nay sighed, slowly walking by me and toward the woman. “We really need to erase their memories, and quick. We also need to take this man to jail.”
Before the woman could run away after hearing that, Nay knocked the back of her head and she fell forward and right onto the ground, unconscious. I felt bad for her, since she had just been attacked, but I knew this was for her own good. She couldn't remember what she had just witnessed, and neither could this man.
But I wasn’t really paying any attention to this. I was still shaking, unable to believe that I had nearly killed that man. Sure, what he was trying to do was horrible, but I still… I still…
“Why…” I choked, staring down at my hands. “Why did I do that?”
Nay was giving me a look I couldn’t read, and it honestly really scared me. Because I could tell that she had no idea what she was supposed to tell me, and she was a little scared as well. And that only terrified me even more.
“Look at me,” she suddenly ordered, grabbing onto my shoulders and forcing me to face her. She looked me right in the eyes, and I felt my breath catch in my throat. She seemed to be looking for something, but was having difficulty because of the bad lighting. I didn’t breathe until she finally let go of me. “Alright. You’re okay.”
I didn’t feel okay. I felt the exact opposite.
"When I saw your tracker go in a opposite direction as the boys, I knew something must have happened between you all, so I followed you," Nay explained to me, though I was barely listening to her. "They're probably worried about you, so you should get back to them quickly. Also, I think they may have found Malicius and Lynx, so they're going to need your help."
I nodded, but still didn't feel right. I had absolutely no idea what was going on with me, and I was scared because Nay seemed to know but wasn’t going to tell me... What was going on, and how bad was it that she wasn't telling me?
