Defenders (18)
“Violet!” I could hear Dex shout again, but he was the least of my worries right then.
I didn’t scream, because I knew that that would do no good. It wasn’t going to stop me from falling, so I just stayed silent as I panicked in my head. There had to be something I could do, right? There had to be something I could do to stop myself before I hit the ground!
The building I had fallen from was tall, so I had some time to think, but not much. The wind that was hitting my face was hurting my eyes, so I could barely keep them open.
This was how I was going to die. I didn’t think that this was the way I was going to go. After joining the DAU, I figured that was going to have something to do with my death, just like my parents’ deaths had been.
My parents. At least if I died now, I’d finally be with them again.
I closed my eyes and waited for the impact of the ground. I waited for my body to splatter against the pavement. But when the impact never came, and the wind stopped blowing past me, I cracked one eye open to see just what was going on.
I gasped when I saw what was happening. Instead of hitting the ground, I was floating about two inches above it. Before I could even really process what was going on, I then dropped and hit the ground, though this landing wasn’t fatal.
I just laid there on my stomach for a second. How had I survived that? How had I stopped myself from flying? What was going on?
I couldn’t see any of my teammates looking down at me as I rolled onto my back to look back up at the building I had fallen from. I was in shock. I didn’t know what I was supposed to do anymore.
Though I couldn’t see my teammates anymore, I could still hear them now that the wind was now longer blowing by my ears. At least, I could still hear Dex. Because he was shouting at the top of his lungs.
“I’ll fucking kill you!” he shouted, and I assumed he was directing this at Malicius. Leave it to Dex to still swear even when he thought his teammate was dead. “I’ll rip your throat out!”
Malicius laughed so loud that I could hear it from the pavement. “I’d like to see you try, tough guy!”
I needed to get back up there before someone did something stupid. Before someone actually turned up dead. But would I be able to get up there fast enough if I took the stairs, or even the elevator?
There was no way I’d get up there before someone got hurt that way. What was I going to do.
I finally pushed myself up off the ground, my legs a little wobbly. I ran my hand through my hair, trying to think of what I was supposed to do. I didn’t really have very much time to think.
I remembered how I had floated over the ground. How had I done that? I didn’t know. But if I could do that, maybe I could do even more…
I jumped up, but dropped right back down to the ground. I tried again, but had the same result. Closing my eyes and concentrating really hard, I jumped up one last time, but this time didn’t hit the ground. When I opened my eyes, I gasped to see that I was in the air.
And then this caused me to land right back on the ground again.
I didn’t have time for this. Concentrating once again, I floated up off the ground. I was flying. I was actually flying!
Without even thinking twice, I immediately took off toward the roof. I didn’t stop concentrating on what I was doing, because I did not want to fall from that height again.
When I finally got back onto the roof, I was almost expecting the sight I was met with. Aiden’s hands were on fire, shooting it at Malicius as he used his rocks to shield himself. He then used his other hand to throw rocks at Anthony, who easily dodged it with his super speed.
Kristie shifted into a wolf and bit down on Malicius’s ankle. He only rolled his eyes at her and kicked her off, seeming completely unaffected by it.
Dex was trying to get to Malicius, but Lynx wouldn’t let him by her. She looked very amused over how furious he was, and I felt bad, considering I was right there. I was fine.
“Hey!” I shouted, making sure I was now floating over the roof just in case I lost concentration once again. Everyone on the roof turned toward me in shock.
“How did you survive that?” Lynx shrieked, looking outraged that I hadn’t fell to my death.
I looked behind me at the distance I had fell before looking back at her. “I don’t know,” I answered honestly.
Malicius’s eyes went wide when he saw me hovering above the ground. “You can fly?”
I shrugged. “I guess.”
Even my teammates looked shocked as they watched me, and I landed back onto the roof. Kristie looked overjoyed that I was alive. Aiden looked jealous over the fact that I had a new power. Anthony looked relieved that I hadn’t died. Dex looked like he wanted to hug me, but he didn’t.
“We have a fight to finish.” My hands balled into fists as I got into a fighting stance. “You can’t expect me to just let you throw me off the roof without coming back for some type of revenge, can you?”
Malicius smirked. “Why, this should be fun.”
I only smirked back at him. I wasn’t going to let them win this time. I wasn’t going to let any of my teammates get hurt, and I wasn’t going to get hurt this time either. This time, things were going to be different.
Forgetting about the buttons, I ripped my janitor’s uniform right off and let it drop to the ground. My teammates followed in my footsteps so we were now in our regular clothes.
Aiden went right back to Malicius, who only laughed as he jumped up onto one of his rock platforms. Kristie shifted into a hawk and swooped up, trying to claw at his face, but Malicius was able to easily block her with his arm.
“Well, I guess Malicius gets that set of lovebirds and I get this love triangle,” Lynx smirked evilly, and I felt by hands ball into fists at my side. “Oh, how fun this will be!”
I couldn’t help but disagree. But I had already been able to tell early on that Lynx and I had two completely different definitions of fun.
“Anthony!” we heard Aiden call out from the other side of the roof, and we turned to see him badly dodging rocks being thrown by Malicius. “Come here and help us!”
Anthony looked at me, but I urged him away. Aiden obviously needed help and Kristie didn’t do much to help him.
Lynx cackled when Anthony sped off to the other side of the roof. “Looks like you get Dex then.”
I smirked at her. “And you don’t.”
She seemed taken aback, like she hadn’t expected me to say this to her. This only caused my smirk to grow even more. Obviously, she didn’t like the fact that Dex wasn’t as interested in her as she was in him.
“You little brat!” she shouted, jumping right at me from her crouching position. I raised my hand to try to throw her away from me, but before I could even try to do anything, someone else was interfering and tackling her away from me.
“Dex!” I cried out, not expecting this from him.
He was wrestling Lynx on the ground now, and she seemed angrier than she did amused. They rolled around; sometimes Dex was on top, and then it was Lynx. It didn’t stop until Dex was finally back on top, pinning her wrists down above her head.
She smirked at him, though I could tell that she was pissed. “Now how did you know this was my favorite position, bad boy?”
Dex scowled down at her. “Let’s just say I had a feeling.”
Lynx tried to break Dex’s grip on her wrists, but he was too strong for her. Her claws couldn’t reach him, and he wasn’t about to get off her anytime soon. She was stuck underneath him; not that she really minded that, I was sure.
“Violet!” Kristie suddenly shrieked from her spot across the roof from me. “Watch out!”
I turned to see what she was yelling about, and gasped when I saw one of Malicius’s boulders coming right at me. I screamed, falling to the floor when the rock knocked me in the side instead of jumping out of the way.
Dex forgot about Lynx underneath him and turned toward me. “Violet!”
She used his distraction as an opportunity to kick him off, and he went flying backwards. She laughed, winking at him before spinning around and running off toward my other teammates, who were still busy fighting Malicius.
I thought Dex was going to go after her, but he made a beeline to me instead. My hands were gripping my side, which was bleeding and hurt like hell.
“Are you okay?” he asked as he crouched down beside me. He reached out for my wound, and this caused me to wince at his touch. The rock had torn through my shirt so the skin and the gash was exposed.
Dex reached out and picked up one of our discarded janitor’s uniforms. He pressed it against my wound, and I hissed, trying to push him away from me, but he was too strong.
“You’ve got to keep it on there, Violet,” he told me, though he seemed to not like the fact that he was hurting me. “You’ve got to stop the bleeding.”
That was true, but that didn’t mean it hurt any less. I remembered how our kind was supposed to heal quickly, and how I supposedly healed even faster, so all I could do was hope that that time would come soon.
“It’s not that bad of a wound,” Dex was now telling me as he removed the cloth to examine it. “It’s not life threatening. With our quickened healing, I’m sure it’ll be gone soon. But I don’t want to take any chances.”
I shook my head, trying to sit up. “I want to go fight,” I told him.
He pushed me back down. “I know, but that’s just too bad. I’m not going to let you fight and get even more hurt.”
This wasn’t fair. Just because I had gotten hurt didn’t mean I couldn’t fight anymore. I just had to get back up on my feet and I was sure I’d be fine again. I just had to get up.
“Come on, Dex!” I could hear Lynx cackle from the other side of the roof, making me cringe. “Leave your girlfriend and come join the fight! We’ll deal with her later!”
Dex didn’t even acknowledge her, and this seemed to annoy her greatly. Obviously, she wanted Dex’s attention and didn’t like that it was on me. So she was going to do whatever she could to get it back on her.
“Mal!” she shouted, grabbing Malicius’s attention from my other teammates. “Forget about these brats! The important ones are over there!”
“The important ones?” her partner snorted, rolling his eyes. “The boy is only important because you’re attracted to him and the girl’s only important because he’s attracted to her.”
Dex shook his head. “Shut up!”
Lynx and Malicius ignored him. “There are other reasons why the girl is important, Malicius,” Lynx spat at the older man, and this seemed to remind him. “Her boyfriend being hot has nothing to do with it… mostly.”
I forced myself into a sitting position, swatting Dex’s hand away when he tried to push me back down. His big hand felt warm as it continued to hold the cloth against my side, but I had to ignore the strange feeling in my stomach as I focused on our enemy.
I was important. For some reason, I was important. And I wanted to find out why.
I pushed myself up off the ground, ignoring the pain in my side and Dex’s protests. He stayed by my side, his large hand still holding the cloth. He wasn’t going to let me go. He wasn’t going to let me fall.
“What are you talking about?” I demanded, stumbling just a little but forcing myself to straighten up. It felt better when I didn’t slouch. “Just why am I so important?”
Lynx smirked at me. “Well, we don’t know if you’re important. We just think you are.”
And for some reason, that was even scarier.
Malicius smirked as he looked at me. “She’s a very pretty girl, isn’t she?”
Lynx rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. “I guess.”
“But not as pretty as her teammate,” the older man continued now with a shrug, and I bit down on the inside of my lip. Of course he had to bring up the fact that Kristie was prettier than me. Everyone had to bring that up.
I looked at my redheaded teammate, who was waiting to shift into whatever she needed to shift into whenever she had to. Even with all the fighting she had done, her hair was still perfect and she looked like she hadn’t even broken a sweat. I envied her so much.
Malicius seemed to notice that this bothered me. “Oh! Is someone jealous of their beautiful teammate?”
I felt my wrist suddenly flick, and Malicius went flying backwards, landing on a few strewn boxes that were on the roof along with us. I hadn’t meant to do that, and even if I had, I wouldn’t have meant to send him that far back, but since I still didn’t have that great of control over my powers, I didn’t really care very much.
“You’re strong.” Lynx almost looked impressed as she watched her partner push himself up out of the pile of now flattened boxes. “But you’re unintentionally strong. You don’t have control over your powers, and that’s why you don’t use them very often. That’s why you stick to physical violence.”
She could figure that out just by one flick of my wrist?
“So what if I can’t control my powers very well?” I snapped, becoming very defensive. Everyone on that roof had perfect control over their powers, and there I was, blowing things up and making things go flying. “Telekinesis is harder than it looks.”
“You’re right. But maybe you can’t control them because you’re not aware of just how powerful your powers really are,” Lynx seemed to think out loud, and I stayed silent on the ground. “That would make a lot of sense, wouldn’t it?”
Malicius had now made his way back over to us. My teammates laid in wait for them to do something threatening. He only straightened on the cuffs of his sleeves and said, “That was impressive.”
I made a face. “Thanks.”
Suddenly, something came shooting out of the shadows on the other side of the roof and struck Malicius right in the arm. “Argh!” he shouted, grabbing onto his arm and nearly collapsing onto the ground. “What the hell was that?”
Lynx was immediately by his side, checking his wound. “It’s a…” she started, her eyebrows furrowing as she pulled the weapon out of his arm. “It’s an icicle?”
It might have just been frozen water, but it did great damage to Malicius’s arm. Blood was now dripping down from the wound on his bicep, and I knew he would no longer be able to fight. Had we won?
Lynx seemed to be thinking the exact same thing I was. She turned toward me and snarled. “This isn’t over!” she snapped before grabbing Malicius by his good arm and taking off away from us. None of us tried to stop them.
My side ached. I needed to sit down. If I didn’t soon, I was going to collapse.
“Hey, whoever threw the icicle!” Aiden now called out. “Come on out!”
I expected Nay to come out from the shadows, Hank along with her, so I was surprised when it was actually Lena who stepped out instead. She looked very impressed with herself.
“You all seem really surprised that it was me,” she smirked, crossing her arms over her chest smugly. “Have you forgotten what my power is already?”
I hadn’t forgotten. I just didn’t expect her to be here, that was all.
“What are you doing here?” I asked her.
She shrugged uncaringly. “I followed you guys here.”
Of course she did. I shouldn’t have been surprised. It was the middle of summer, so she had nothing else to do. Especially since she apparently didn’t have any friends to hang out with.
“Why?” Anthony questioned now.
Lena rolled her eyes, like the answer should have been obvious. Like Anthony was the stupidest person on the planet. That was kind of funny to think about. “I wanted to hang out with Violet,” she answered simply, and I couldn’t help but feel a little simple. “You guys were leaving when I got to the DAU, so I decided to follow you here.”
“So you were watching the fight the entire time but didn’t decide to jump in?” Aiden snapped at her, and he seemed to be the only one that was angry about this. “Thanks a lot!”
This pissed Lena off. “I’m the one that got them to go away, you know!” she shouted back at him, and I let out a sigh. She really was the female version of Dex sometimes. “You could at least thank me for that, you asshole!”
She had a mouth like Dex, too. Maybe that was why they worked out so well together.
“I’m not going to thank the girl who let us fight for an hour before she decided to join in!” Aiden yelled, his hands balled into fists at his side.
Lena really couldn’t have cared less. “It was entertaining!” she snapped, but it really wasn’t for her defense.
Aiden looked outraged. “We could have died!”
I hated this. I hated all the fighting. We had just gotten out of one fight, and now we had to get into another? I leaned into Dex, whose hand immediately went back to my cloth-covered wound while his other arm wrapped around my waist to support me. Lena noticed this but ignored it.
“I stopped it, didn’t I?” She was getting angrier and angrier with every word being said. “I’m the one that got rid of them!”
“Not soon enough!” he now growled. “Violet got hurt!”
“It’s not like that’s my fault!”
“It might as well be—”
“Alright, stop it!” I finally shouted, fed up with their arguing. I pushed away from Dex and straightened myself up to look intimidating. I didn't think it really worked. “It wasn’t anyone’s fault that I got hurt! Just drop it!”
Lena huffed. “Whatever. Let’s go, Violet.”
“Violet’s not going anywhere,” a new voice now said, and now Nay stepped out of the darkness, her arms crossed over her chest, her blonde hair in a braid over her shoulder. Hank stepped out behind her. “She’s not going anywhere until her wound is healed.”
Lena rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on,” she scoffed. “She’s going to heal in like, what, ten minutes?”
I didn’t think it was going to happen that quickly, but I couldn’t have been sure. I already felt better than I had five minutes before, but I didn’t say this. I honestly didn’t want to hang out with her right then.
Nay did not look amused in the slightest. “Don’t be so sure about that, Lena. She’s now allowed out until we know she’s one hundred perfect, completely healed.”
Lena let out a groan. “You’re all so uncool!” she complained, but the composed herself and turned toward Dex with a small smirk. “How about you? Do you want to go out with me and have some fun?”
For some reason, I felt my stomach twist. I did not want Dex going out with Lena. I didn’t want him around her when I wasn’t there. I didn’t know where they’d go, what they’d do… and it bothered me.
I felt dizzy. I didn’t know if it was because I had lost some blood or because I was just so done with the day. My side ached. I swayed a little bit. I wanted to go back to the DAU.
Dex looked at Lena, and then at me. I didn’t exactly know what kind of facial expression I was making, but Dex’s eyes softened when he looked at me.
“Sorry,” he apologized, walking right by her and back to me. He offered me his arm, and I leaned against him. “But I’m needed here.”
Lena didn’t exactly look angry, but she was definitely surprised. Dex said nothing more to her before turning away with me and leading me toward the door. I didn’t know if I was supposed to say anything, so I didn’t.
We took the elevator. Everyone else took the stairs.
