Chapter 6: Jealousy
Mom had called us the day after I saw Bella at La Push, her trip had been extended as she had some major project going on at the moment, I think it was for some huge hotel development. She told us it would be two months at least. Apparently it could result in a promotion and I was proud of her, but it just meant I'd have to endure Jesse everyday for the next two months, if not longer.
There still hadn't been an apology, and I longed to have my obnoxious but sweet older brother back. Paul had been acting like a hot head too, losing his temper easily and having to go cool off a lot, not that I had seen him. I had just overheard Dad talking to Billy and Harry.
Apparently, Jared had been acting the same as well, even though I would only hang out with him if he was with the guys, I never really spoke to him. I always got a vibe from him as if he didn't like me. I always thought it was because I looked different compared to the rest of them. Even my sister looked more Quileute than me. He was stuck up like that. Always making comments when the kids from Forks came to the beaches to surf and hang out.
I prayed that Jake, Embry and Quil would not turn out like them. It would kill me if I lost them too. They are everything to me. I could never imagine them even having a temper close to what Jesse and Paul had developed.
I was staying at Jake's this weekend. Our dads had decided to go fishing suddenly and they felt that it was best for me to stay at Jacobs's, so he wasn't alone, but I knew that the real reason was to benefit me. It was so I wouldn't have to endure Jesse on my own without Dad. Tori was staying at Seth's.
Jacob's house was only a fifteen-minute walk from my house so there was no need for a car. It was a small and cosy wooden place with narrow windows, painted a dark red which made it look like a small barn. I arrived at about 7pm, Jake had text me before I left telling me he had already ordered the pizza.
"Hi Jake." I called out as I let myself in.
"Hey Blue, I'm in the den." He called back but his voice was muffled, it sounded like he had his mouth full. He didn't even wait for me to get started.
"How's it going Jacob? Hungry, are we?" I asked flopping down onto the couch beside him, turning so I could place my legs over his lap.
"I'm fine. How are you, Blue?" I liked my nickname; I liked being different. I felt more unique that way.
"Annoyed. I didn't tell you; Mom has to stay in Miami for another two months at least. That means I'm still stuck with Jesse." I pouted running my hands through my hair.
"Hey, don't worry about it. But on the bright side, it just means you're closer to me." He beamed and I rolled my eyes, snatching the pizza box out of his hands.
"Meh." I shrugged and he glared at me playfully, squeezing my knee causing me to jump away from him. "Don't do that you know I hate it." I said rubbing my knee over my jeans.
"Meh." He mimicked and I playfully slapped his shoulder. "So, what do you want to watch?" He asked as I placed my legs back on his lap, taking a big bite of the cheesy goodness.
We ended up watching Die Hard. Again. I swear whenever we are at his house we watch that film. Next time I'll kill him before I let him put it on again. As the end credits began to show he switched the TV off and turned to me, placing the empty pizza box on the coffee table in front of us. "I have to tell you something." He looked awkward and he was fidgeting as he looked at me.
"Jake, you don't have to be so shy; you can tell me anything." I placed my hand over his, smiling reassuringly.
My heart began to beat a little faster thinking about the possibility of him telling me what I've been longing to hear for the past two years. Though, that was a slim chance.
"I'm only telling you this because I trust you." He began smiling brightly at me as I nodded, waiting for him to continue. "I know she's only been back for a short while, and I've only been spending short amounts of time with her, but I think I'm starting to like-like Bella."
You hear that cracking sound? Yeah. That was my heart splitting in two.
I kept my face straight, my lips parted as I searched my brain for an answer. I mean seriously how was I supposed to answer that? How can I, a girl that's been falling for her best friend, tell him I'm happy that he's falling for another girl. My cousin to be exact.
"Wow. Err..." I was saved by the front doorbell ringing, and I quickly scrambled up from the couch to get it. "Hold that thought." I said to Jake holding a finger up as I all but ran to the door.
He wouldn't mind me answering the door of course, otherwise I wouldn't have jumped up like I did.
I could vaguely see the outline of a girl standing outside the door through the frosted glass. Her russet skin seemed to glow under the porch light. I furrowed my eyebrows wondering what girl would be knocking on Jake's door at this time.
I pulled on the door handle and was surprised to see someone I had completely forgot existed. The bright smile on her face instantly dropped when — and I'm just guessing here — I answered the door instead of Jake.
"Can I help you?" I asked sweetly, feigning my internal desire to rip her head off.
Millie. She was from the Makah tribe, but she went to the school on Rez and was in our grade year. She had the biggest crush on Jacob, not that I could blame her, but she always had this burning need to literally remove me from the picture. It got to the point when she threatened to have her two older brothers beat me up when we were fourteen but that backfired when they were faced with Jesse, Paul, Jared and Sam.
She was a bit on the easy side, no denying that. Just by her attire you could tell she came here for one thing only. I mean come on! Who wears booty shorts in March?
"Is Jacob here?" Her voice was high and squeaky, and I tried to hide the cringing on my face as her voice hurt my ears.
"Why?" I asked getting slightly on edge, I wanted to see if she'd admit her little plan or not.
"He asked me to come over." She said matter-of-factly, placing her hand on her hip whilst her free hand swooped her extension-laden hair over her shoulder.
"Erm no. I don't think he did." I mocked, I leant forward slightly, and I loved the advantage my height gave me. I was five feet eight, Millie was merely five foot if that.
"What makes you so sure?" She looked me up and down, obviously comparing us in her head.
"I'm staying here tonight." I said simply, changing my hold on the door, ready to swing it into her face. "Bye." I was full on ready to apply force to the door, but Jake's hand flew out and grabbed it stopping me. I scowled at him in annoyance.
"Oh, Millie! What are you doing here?" Jake said awkwardly, confused by her presence.
"Oh, Jakey! Hi!" Her voice went an octave higher as she greeted him, and tried to covertly pull her top lower to expose her push up bra enhanced cleavage. I scoffed and she scowled at me, she looked furious, nostrils flaring as she glared.
"I'll ask again, shall I?" Jake said sarcastically from beside me. "Why are you here?" He said it slower, hoping she would catch on with her stupidity, I could help but let a giggle escape.
"You asked me here remember." She tried to remain in control and keep up her confident façade as she reached out for his arm, but I intervened and stepped in from of him. No way she's touching him... she may be diseased.
"Will you calm down!" He whispered quickly into my ear, and I shrugged not taking my eyes off of her. She retracted her hand slowly before looking up at Jake's face again. He must be a whole foot taller than her. "I did not ask you here." Jake challenged her, and her face crumpled in panic.
"Well, I wanted to surprise you." She really did try to win him over, but she was failing miserably.
"Well..." I said mimicking her squeaky tone. "You're not wanted." I folded my arms across my chest as I stared her down. I had grown a lot in the past three years, I'm glad it intimidated her.
"I don't care about your opinion!" She snapped, her eyes then locking back onto Jake's face.
"Well, I do." Jake said coolly, wrapping arm around my waist and pulling me back into his body. My heart fluttered but I kept my face stern as I stared at her. "My girlfriend and I would like a night alone. Thank you." I thought I was going to combust as I watched Millie's mouth drop open, her wide eyes flicker between the two of us.
"W-What?" Was all she could muster before Jake pulled me back a few steps.
"Bye Millie." And he then done what I had planned to do all along and let the door slam in her face.
We watched her for a moment as she stayed put, most likely in shock and I couldn't help myself when my eyes caught the switch for the porch light. I leant forward slightly, still in Jake's hold and switched the light off, the view out the window of the door now completely black. Her frustrated screams filled the air, and then her retreating footsteps followed, her heels echoing along the pavement.
I turned myself in Jake's arms and then looked up at him, still in shock at her reaction. His face mirrored mine, and we stared at each other in silence for a few seconds until the laughs began to escape us. Could a girl really be that desperate?
Jake's booming laughter warmed my heart, and I squealed as he suddenly flung me over his shoulder and ran us back to the den. He flopped my body down and then hovered over me, our laughs dying down as we looked at each other. Our smiles slowly faded as we looked at one another, nervous butterflies stirred in my stomach as his face seemed to come closer to my own.
"Can you believe she actually bought it?" They were not the words I expected to come out of his mouth, and I tried my best to disguise the hurt I felt trying to break out over my features. I focused on the smile that had returned to his lips.
"I know." I sighed and he climbed off of me, sitting back in his seat on the other end of the sofa. "I hate her." I sat up scowling, she literally turned my stomach.
"Was someone jealous?" He teased and I felt the blush crawl up my neck.
"No!" I said all too quickly, grabbing a cushion and throwing it at his face. He would not see through me!
"Okay, okay. I was only joking." We sat silently for a moment, his smile taunting me as I scowled at the floor. Her face was still floating around my mind. "So anyway, Bella..." Hadn't I suffered enough tonight?
"Oh yeah... what did you want to say?" I faked interest. I didn't really wanna hear him talking about Bella all night, but I couldn't exactly get annoyed, he didn't know how I felt.
"I've only seen her twice, but she did seem really interested. And in the tribe stuff too." He was excited, he was practically beaming as I felt my heart sink into my stomach.
"I still can't believe you told her that stuff." I looked up at him, with slight annoyance and he caught on.
"What?" He protested pretending to be completely innocent. "We don't believe in it anyway." He shrugged, leaning towards the coffee table to grab his soda.
"Yes, I know that." He looked at me pointedly, showing a half smile of triumph. "But, if someone like our parents had heard you, you would be dead."
"Yeah, but they didn't." He grinned and I rolled my eyes at his childishness.
"That's not the point Jacob. If she tells someone she'll get you in trouble." I began as his face dropped proving me right. "She could mention it to her dad, and he could talk to Billy. Not that it matters with how close she's been with Edward recently. No doubt she'll have questions for him about it..." I wonder what they would say to her, because surely it must have been their ancestors that made the treaty with our own.
"Okay fine I get it, I screwed up." It was my turn to rub it in and smile triumphantly.
"See, I'm always right." I boasted and he took it upon himself to dramatically roll his eyes at me. "Rude!" I gasped and a smile broke out on his face.
"You want rude, I'll show you rude." I had a split second to stare at him in confusion before he lunged for me.
My screams filled the air as I jumped over the back of the sofa, my bare feet hitting the laminate with a light thud. I got to the end of the hallway without getting caught, but hesitation was my downfall as I couldn't decide what room to run into fast enough.
"Got ya!" My squeals filled the air as his hands gripped my waist, his fingertips digging into my ribs purposely to cause ticklish discomfort.
"You... Jacob Black... are pure... evil!" I got out between gasps for breath as he held me, and I tried to make myself into a ball shape on the floor so he couldn't get to my ribs.
"Yeah, but you love me for it." He laughed before nudging me with his foot, so I rolled onto my side, my makeshift ball shape unravelling.
"Sometimes. Most of the time you're just a pain that I can't escape." I breathed heavily as I lay sprawled across the floor, staring up at his beautiful face. I could never get bored of him.
"I know exactly how you feel." He smiled wickedly at me causing me to scowl.
"Rude!" I reminded him again but all we could do was fall into fits of laughter right there on his kitchen floor.
